Smirking Joni: Overturning The American Revolution

6 PM Friday evening – well it looks like Republicans voted to end the republic by putting one man above the law. As I explain below, Joni Ernst was the deciding vote. Republicans Mitt Romney and Susan Collins voted to keep the republic.  Funny how a party that so frequently talks of “freedom” and “liberty” was so quick to put one man above the law and thus putting an end to a 230 year experiment.

Smirking Joni Ernst jumps in on a an early Republican victory dance to remind people that she and her group of henchmen are not only about the business of undermining the constitution, they are also using the impeachment hearing to do all they can to use the publicity garnered by the impeachment hearings to do what Dear Leader is being impeached for: using the power of his office to go after a political rival Joe Biden.

In this tweet you can see that Ernst is fairly ebullient no doubt thinking she is the one putting a fork into Biden because he is done. This is not the purpose of the the impeachment hearing. The real purpose is whether the current president can ignore the dictates of the constitution and use the power of his office to blackmail help from a foreign government for his re-election using tax payer money.

You would never know that was what was going on. Based on her performance here it seems the purpose for the impeachment hearings were to smear Biden and undermine his challenge to Trump. And based on Ernst’s actions she believes she has been successful. Just watch the results on Monday at the Iowa caucuses.

How she will be able to tell she is successful is beyond me. Polls leading up to the Iowa caucuses have had four different leaders including Biden. No one candidate has a majority according to the polls. So I guess Ernst will be ready to claim the Republicans were able to use the impeachment hearings to stop Biden no matter what the outcome.

At one time a senator such as Joni Ernst would be quickly turned out in Iowa. Iowans at one time were recognized for their ability to cut through the BS and able to quickly recognize when they were being hornswaggled. That is not true anymore. Ernst’s act of working for party and donors before country at one time wouldn’t play here. Now it does play to some portion of Iowans when backed up by splashy TV ads and social media.

I am writing this on Thursday.  What Ernst and her Republican colleagues will be voting on probably Friday night will be an acquittal on impeachment charges. This in effect would be a statement that the checks and balances so carefully crafted in our constitution will no longer stand. When the senate abrogates their power to check the executive, checks and balances are gone. That will mean that one man will be above the law. That will mean that as Richard Nixon once tried to assert “If the president does it, it is legal.” That would include crimes.

For those who have ever read the Declaration of Independence will know that much of that document is taken up listing grievances of the subjects of an all powerful (that is ‘above the law’) King. Republicans should they do the expected will have restored an ‘above the law’ person in a country that went to war to end such a form of government. We called it the American Revolution. Republicans are now extremely close to overturning the core reason that our forebears fought their revolution for.

Ernst and comrades should understand that once one president is above the law and checks and balances are gone, that will be the precedent for all future presidents. Thus a President Biden or Sanders or Warren will preside under those rules. That is without checks and balances in a world where “if the the president does it, it is legal.”

Ernst and comrades should also remember that whatever documents are being hidden by the current president to cover up illegal acts will most likely be able to to be declassified and become public. A future president Elizabeth Warren has promised that will be one of her first acts in office.

Even if Republicans are able to forestall the release of documents, you can bet the good press will keep hammering to find what illegalities and conspiracies the Trump administration engaged in. My bet is that once Trump no longer is president his ability to demand loyalty will wane quickly, especially if the election is a huge rebuke. There must be a huge contingent of administration officials, aides and maybe even a few senators and representatives that will want to tell their story.

This is America. The truth usually has a way of seeing the light of day no matter what those in power try to cover it up.

One last thing on Ernst. When you are looking for which Republican was THE ONE whose vote made Donald Trump a man above the law you can point your finger at Joni Ernst. Any one of the Republicans that vote for Trump’s acquittal will be the vote that crossed the line for Trump. Thus Ernst’s vote will be the vote that nullifies what Washington, Adams, Jefferson and all the others fought for. That is not something I would be bragging about.

I hope at every stop on her vaunted 99 county tour this year there is someone at every stop to remind her of how her vote ended checks and balances.

Mike Franken Calls Out Joni Ernst On Caucus Comments

“Go along to get along is not an Iowa value”

Mike Franken’s official statement on Senator Joni Ernst’s comments on Biden, Iowa voters

Mike Franken, a retired three-star admiral, expressed his concern Tuesday over statements made by Senator Joni Ernst referencing Joe Biden and Iowa caucus goers.

Just after yesterday’s impeachment proceedings, Joni Ernst gleefully said that she was “interested to see how [impeachment]…influences Iowa caucus voters.” It seems Senator Ernst gave the game plan away.

Impeachment is serious business. It is not a whimsical political tool to influence elections. And I’m not only dismayed that Joni Ernst and Mitch McConnell seem so willing to use impeachment to undermine Joe Biden, I’m aghast that they trumpet it.

As the president stands trial and unfortunate history is being made, Iowa’s Joni Ernst doesn’t just lack impartiality, she lacks integrity. Go along to get along is not an Iowa value in matters of national import.

Six years ago, Iowans asked for a senator who would reflect the values of all Iowans and uphold the integrity of our nation’s military. Did Iowa get what they wanted? I’m thinking that we want a senator who serves Iowa’s wishes, and isn’t blindly obedient to Mitch McConnell nor fearful of Donald Trump.

It’s time for a sea change. Raised in rural Sioux County and having served this nation for a very long time, I won’t change like Joni has. .

Michael Franken (D-Sioux City) is a retired Vice Admiral running for the Democratic nomination for U.S. Senate in the upcoming June 2nd, 2020 primary.

How Does America Protect Itself From 24-7 Propaganda By The Billionaire Class?

Thom Hartmann

Thom Hartmann’s prescient broadcast from May, 2019. “The only power we have to block the president from breaking the law is impeachment. “How does America protect itself from 24-7 propaganda by the billionaire class? What is holding this all together? The thing that is holding it all together is Murdoch’s media empire – Fox News, the WSJ and the NYP – and right wing hate radio that follows their lead. Propaganda works.”   Listen to more from Thom about how it works.

Media’s Theft From The Commons

Newspapers

“Right-wing media have been laying the groundwork for Trump’s acquittal for half a century,” Nicole Hemmer wrote in the New York Times. “These tactics (i.e. minimize Trump’s transgressions and paint a picture of non-stop Democratic scandals) are not inventions of the Trump era. They are part of a decades-long strategy by the right to secure political power — a strategy originating in conservative media.”

For a student of history the story is not only about conservative mass media beginning in the mid-20th Century. It goes further back.

It’s been a few decades since I finished graduate school yet I remember we studied nineteenth century newspapers from the Old West in Kansas, Oklahoma, and the like. They were mainly gossip sheets in which people could and did say just about anything. Whatever was needed to engage locals and sell advertising, whether it was true or not. It is a part of human nature to want to hear gossip and the outrageous things that may or may not be going on in a community.

What’s different now is corporations have exploited this aspect of human nature to generate revenue. They’ve been successful at doing so. In a way, right wing media is yet another corporate theft from the commons.

One can’t make the argument that media has ever been without bias. Journalists, editors, and even historians have their implicit point of view which may or may not serve the truth or other human needs. I’m thinking here of the work of Howard Zinn, David Hackett Fischer, Clifford Geertz and others.

Joan Didion described it as well as anyone, “We tell ourselves stories in order to live.” What we hadn’t planned for was the malicious intent of people who would come to dominate news and information sources, and the role that would play in the stories we tell ourselves.

The first sign of trouble should have been when our favorite news personalities began to earn millions of dollars annually for what should have been a public service. That Sean Hannity earns $40 million per year is all one needs to know about FOX News. Even Walter Cronkite earned close to a million.

My media behavior toward this impeachment effort is similar to during the Nixon and Clinton proceedings. I tune it out. One exception though. While I’m still in bed, before I turn the light on, I pick up my phone and read Heather Cox Richardson’s daily letter. It’s about all that I can take. Is she biased? Of course. But my tolerance for the biases of Phillips Exeter Academy and Harvard where she was educated is a bit higher. Plus she feeds my confirmation bias.

Why Should Progressives Consider Eddie Mauro For U.S. Senate?

Eddie Mauro

When Eddie Mauro is campaigning around Iowa he considers the communities in which he finds himself.

“Every time I drive into a community I look at places where I say we help insure that,” Mauro said. “We help insure that restaurant; we help insure that daycare…”

As president and chief executive of UIG, a Des Moines-based insurance company he founded, Mauro and his team of 70 people provide property and casualty insurance to businesses in all 99 Iowa counties. He’s also one of five candidates for U.S. Senate in the June 2 Democratic primary election.

On Thursday, Jan. 16, Blog for Iowa interviewed Mauro at a coffee shop in Coralville. When I arrived he was standing at a table with his hands on his hips. He appeared to be stretching after sitting in his vehicle for a while. He had another stop in Waterloo after our interview so it would be a long day of campaigning. This post reflects a transcription of his responses to my questions.

In addition to running a successful insurance company, Mauro spent a lifetime in community organizing and activism. Mauro is a founding member of AMOS (A Midwest Organizing Strategy) which “seek(s) to channel individual action into a responsible and powerfully organized force for the common good,” according to the AMOS website. He also worked as a coach in a number of small Iowa towns.

BFIA: What does being a community organizer mean to you?

MAURO: I started doing service work back to (when) I was 14 years old. Catholic Worker in Des Moines was forming then. I started getting involved with the homeless at an early age and have been involved with the homeless community ever since. As a teacher we used to take kids out in the mornings. We would crawl under bridges, and abandoned buildings, or wooded areas, and we would serve the homeless. We had a Saturday program as well with the produce in the impoverished neighborhoods of Des Moines. I’m still doing homeless work.

BFIA: In terms of community service, what are you most proud of?

MAURO: Proud of?

BFIA: What do you look at and say, “boy this was really good.”

MAURO: I’m not proud of any of it. I feel good that God’s given me the wherewithal to step up and help. I do a project in Tanzania called Water Systems of Tanzania. I go over there usually a couple of times a year. It’s a phenomenal project. We created a non profit called the Purify Project. We have some water quality issues here in this country for sure. People are dying every day in Africa. So it’s a good project.

BFIA: Why are you running for U.S. Senate?

MAURO: There are a lot of reasons for running. Primarily that Iowans deserve a leader today to address the problems facing this country with the urgency and the courage that’s demanded in this moment in history. We don’t get that out of Joni Ernst. We have a United States Senate that is broken and under performing.

BFIA: How do you deal with Joni Ernst’s popularity? She was popular in 2014, she continues to be popular.

MAURO: First of all her popularity has been sliding as people are starting to sense that a lot of that was a ruse. She’s been doing a good job of talking, misleading, and conning, and tricking people. It’s starting to become evident that she hasn’t done anything meaningful for Iowans. In fact, she hasn’t even been a senator for Iowans, (but) a senator for special interests and big industry, for her buddies the Koch brothers who created her, who she’s fiercely loyal to. The people in the state deserve better than that. I don’t think she’s overly popular here. I think there’s a lot of holes in that popularity. We are going to talk about she’s voted to take health care away from Iowans five times.

BFIA: I’m seeing people who don’t care about that and are willing to set her voting record aside and say, “she’s our girl.” There’s a plain acceptance of her votes on issues.

MAURO: Those issues are real, Paul. To go out to people and say, ‘Yep, you really like her. Well why do you like her?’ Are you aware of what she’s done for the healthcare? Are you aware of what she’s done to women’s rights? Are you aware what she’s done to turn her back on vulnerable women who are domestic violence survivors? Are you aware of what she’s doing to our public schools, the future for our kids and our teachers? Are you aware of what she’s done for rural Iowa, of the lack of courage that she’s displayed when it comes to the renewable fuel standard, and how she’s cow-tied to the president?

It’s not enough to say all the bad things she did, you have to very well stand for something. So I’m out preaching what I think are strong progressive bona fides while I talk about what we can be doing in rural Iowa. What we can be doing on Main Streets and town squares that I do business with now for over twenty years. What we can do with rural farmers to really give them a strong P&L and balance sheet, something they are yearning for. While at the same time tackling climate change. So we’re going to go out and communicate that we deserve better and we can do better than what we’ve gotten out of Joni Ernst who has not been a senator for this state.

We go out and sell that message wide and far, we’re convinced our strategy shows us that we win this race by five to seven points.

~ Eddie Mauro’s campaign approached Blog for Iowa about an interview. We remain willing to interview other progressive candidates for statewide office.

Inequality: One Of This Election’s Big Issues

Eight days to caucus, right? Here is a brief look at what I consider to be the really overwhelming issues. Depending on your perspective, any one of these could be in your top spot:

  1. Climate Change – well it is all moot if the planet shakes us off like so many fleas, isn’t it? The climate may not be the immediate, in your face issue, but it surrounds us and is in everything. The Green New Deal may be the policy that comes out of the threat of climate change
  1. Honest elections with paper trails.  –  If we have no confidence in our system of election, then belief in the legitimacy of our government will soon spiral downward. The right has been doing all they can to undermine confidence in the elections and the legitimacy of the government since Ronald Reagan. The Help America Vote Act that spurred the purchase of thousands of voting machines with no way to check the validity of the vote left our systems open to hacking and other forms of attack. This must be fixed. Democrats in the US House made it their top priority when they took power in January of 2019. They passed a bill that Mitch McConnell has effectively killed in the Senate.
  1. Health Care  –  huge inequality still exists in our health care system and will continue to exist as long as profit is the main driver behind our health care system. Profit and health care should not be linked together. Theodore Roosevelt was the first president to try for a national health care system. Profit driven corporations and individuals have been able to stop national health care since then. Over 100 years is long enough. We have also seen that “incremental” steps are fairly ineffective. Universal health care needs to be a national policy, just like it is for all other so-called first world countries.
  1. Inequality  –  This is the one I want to spend some time on today since it doesn’t get the press that the other major issues do. With the near extinctions of America’s union movement, especially in the private sector, we have seen wages stagnate. As wages as wages have stagnated costs of essentials such as housing and education have skyrocketed.

Here our old friend Robert Reich has a short video on why the Millennial generation has no money: (4 minutes)

But the millennials are not the only group that is facing a huge inequality gap. Most of America is. The major reason for that inequality is low wages. Over at dailykos Wednesday night, Meteor Blades noted that:

At the Center for Economic and Policy Research, Dean Baker writes—This Is What Minimum Wage Would Be If It Kept Pace with Productivity:

Until 1968, the minimum wage not only kept pace with inflation, it rose in step with productivity growth. The logic is straightforward; we expect that wages in general will rise in step with productivity growth. For workers at the bottom to share in the overall improvement in society’s living standards, the minimum wage should also rise with productivity.

The distinction between inflation and productivity is an important one. If the minimum wage rises in step with inflation, we are effectively ensuring that it will allow minimum wage earners to buy the same amount of goods and services through time, protecting them against higher prices. However, if it rises with productivity that means that as workers are able to produce more goods and services per hour, on average, minimum wage earners will be able to buy more goods and services through time.

While the national minimum wage did rise roughly in step with productivity growth from its inception in 1938 until 1968, in the more than five decades since then, it has not even kept pace with inflation. However, if the minimum wage did rise in step with productivity growth since 1968 it would be over $24 an hour today, as shown in the Figure below.

trends in minimum wage

Meteor Blades then ends with an FDR quote that, like many FDR quotes, is still relevant today:

“In my Inaugural I laid down the simple proposition that nobody is going to starve in this country. It seems to me to be equally plain that no business which depends for existence on paying less than living wages to its workers has any right to continue in this country. By ‘business’ I mean the whole of commerce as well as the whole of industry; by workers I mean all workers, the white collar class as well as the men in overalls; and by living wages I mean more than a bare subsistence level-I mean the wages of decent living.”

He’s baaaack!

When our Dear Leader Chosen One, Mr. Stable Genius, decided to take out the Iranian General against all advice from nearly all his advisors, many people immediately thought “How will Iran respond? What will they attack to get even?” My first thought was “It is the middle of winter. I hope they don’t attack out electric grid.” Our electric grid is kind of old and rickety andthe software running the system is apparently hackable.Mid-winter would be a really bad time to find out the vulnerabilities hadn’t been fixed since the hack last year.

We could put some money toward bringing our infrastructure up to snuff, but the Stable Genius has a better idea – run up huge debts giving huge tax cuts to people who don’t need them. You have to wonder what kind of a stable produced such a genius. Donald J. Trump. The J is for Jenius (he said it I didn’t).

  1. What two NFL teams will be matched up in this year’s Super Bowl?
  1. Iowa Women’s Basketball Coach Lisa Bluder joined a small circle of Big Ten coaches with over 200 Big Ten wins. Ironically, who is the only other woman in that group?

Robert Reich Looks At The US Today

I have said many times before that Robert Reich is one of my go to people to get some solid perspective on the current situation. He not only explains the situation but usually offers a real way to counter the attacks that the right seems to rain on our society today.

Today I am posting two recent short videos reminding us that as bad as it looks, we have faced problems down before.

This first video reminds us that perhaps the worst or second worst SCOTUS decision was just ten years ago – Citizens United v. The FEC was handed down 10 years ago last week. That decision has ben a major contributor to our dramatically altered political landscape: (4 minutes)

In the second video, Professor Reich discusses Why He Is Still Hopeful:  (5 minutes)

Finally we have a long interview with Professor Reich done for Frontline’s airing of their episode “America’s Great Divide.”  (59 minutes)

Social Security And Medicare On The Block If Trump Wins In 2020

Image (2) Bernie-Sanders-on-the-election-300x150.png for post 27913

With the behemoth news story of the impeachment sucking up almost all the TV and radio air, there is very little other news getting out or getting a proper amount of air time. Hopefully, the story out of Davos, Switzerland that the current president thinks tackling entitlement spending (basically Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid) would be “easy.”

From The Washington Post:

Speaking with CNBC from the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Trump said tackling entitlement spending is “the easiest of all things” and seemed to suggest higher economic growth would make it simpler to cut spending on those programs. Those comments come amid a heated debate in the Democratic presidential primary over former vice president Joe Biden’s record on Social Security, just days before the Iowa caucuses.

“At the right time, we will take a look at that. You know, that’s actually the easiest of all things, if you look,” Trump said. He later added when asked about entitlements: “Well, we’re going — we’re going to look. We also have assets that we’ve never had. I mean, we’ve never had growth like this.”

A White House spokesman said in a statement that the president is not pushing “benefit cuts” but rather that the administration would aim to eliminate things such as “waste” and “fraud” in the programs.

“President Trump is keeping his commitment to the most vulnerable Americans especially those who depend on Medicare and Social Security,” the statement said. “His budgets have proposed more savings to mandatory programs than any President in history, including lowering drug costs, eliminating waste, fraud, and abuse, and getting people off welfare and back to work.”

While the rhetoric here seems to be very general and focused on ways to eliminate waste etc. you have to remember that in reality republican ideas on any social program almost always ends with the customers of the benefit losing much of the benefit while money that once went to the customers is redirected into the hands of rich business owners through some chicanery. Iowa’s Medicaid privatization is a prime example of how this happens. Overhead has grown from around 3% to well over 15% with that money now going to insurance companies and being taken from patient care.

If Trump and his minions take access to Social Security you can expect that strategy #1 will be to redirect funds into Wall Street investments. By doing that Wall Streeters and corporate big wigs will once again see their stocks balloon as stock prices soar. As they make a killing, you and I, who will be forced to keep our investments in for a long time will get screwed over big time. It has happened before.

Expect Medicare to become some form of “Medicare Advantage” which is simply another insurance plan that will cost like hell as you get older.

Medicaid will become what the Trump administration is already planning on trying out – a block grant program to the state. If the money runs out before the end of the year, so does the Medicaid recipients health care. Here are some of  the changes that may be going in to Medicaid not someday but possibly very, very soon:

1. If federal officials approve waivers to change Medicaid funding to block grants, it could be among the administration’s most controversial changes to the 55-year-old Medicaid program, according to the report.

2. Under current regulations, the federal government matches state Medicaid spending. A block grant program would mean a state would instead receive a capped lump sum of federal funding to use.

3. Block grants have already gained support from lawmakers in Tennessee, Alaska and Oklahoma, according to WSJ.

4. Proponents of the block grants argue they will give states more flexibility over how their program is funded, as well as free them from some federal requirements. Opponents argue the limited funds would lead to thousands of people losing Medicaid coverage, and question the legality of waiving federal funding under Medicaid.

5. The possible new guidance comes after CMS withdrew a proposed guidance on Medicaid block grants and per-capita cap programs from the White House Office of Management and Budget website in November 2019.

If a year from now we are living in a world of a re-elected Trump who has been given near-kingly powers by the Senate when the Senate refused to use their power to check the executive branch in the impeachment hearings, then Trump will do all he can to end entitlements with a stroke of his pen. Then it will be up to a court system that is a large majority appointed by Republican presidents to act as a check. I believe this session of the Supreme Court will show they are not willing to act as a check on the president.

The best check against an empowered Trump acting to end Social Security and Medicare is to vote him out of office. Like many I believe the vote against the Trump administration will be overwhelming, but as Josef Stalin was reputed to say “it is not who votes that counts it is who counts the votes that counts.” As we are seeing during the impeachment hearings Republicans are loathe to do anything about election cheating.

Whether it be interference from foreign countries, voter suppression, or the most dangerous of all, electronic voting machines with no paper trail backup that can be easily hacked the Republican Party has either created the situation or stood in the way of fixing it.

Until Republicans somehow are voted out of power the only real thing we can do is to vote and get others out to vote in overwhelming numbers. We have already seen how damaging Trump can be. His administration has run up massive debts with much of that money going to the wealthiest in the form of tax cuts. Meanwhile the poor have seen their food allowances cut to near nothing along with their access to medical care. Just think what a reelected Trump who has not been checked by our system could do.

Taking a wrecking ball to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid will only be the beginning. And the “checks and balances” of the constitution will have been rendered incapable of stopping him thanks to Republican Seante actions in the impeachment.
