Mark Your Calendar for Stop Factory Farms Lobby Day

Meanwhile back in Iowa.. here is an action alert from Iowa Alliance for Responsible Agriculture:

With the legislative session right around the corner, we wanted to make sure you heard that the Stop Factory Farms Lobby Day is returning on January 25th, 2023 at the Capitol in Des Moines.

As you know, factory farms pose a grave threat to the health of Iowans, impacting our air and water quality and harming independent farmers and rural communities. Iowans have been voicing their opposition for years, supporting legislation for a moratorium on factory farms since 2018.

In 2023, the Iowa Alliance for Responsible Agriculture is once again introducing legislation for a moratorium. After all, we’re fighting for an Iowa whose future is full of thriving rural communities, clean water, and a food and farm system that works for all!

And with a new set of elected officials, we need your help to show state legislators just how much support this movement has!

RSVP Here

In preparation for the legislative session, we’ve also been holding meetings around the state to talk in depth about the history of factory farms, the harm they cause, and what we can do about it.

So far we’ve met in Grinnell and Iowa City, and we’re planning to keep the roadshows going, with the next one in Des Moines on January 14. But if you can’t make it to Des Moines, and missed the others, you can check out the recording from Iowa City here!

The legislative session starts January 9, so stay tuned for updates and ways to support the Moratorium bill this legislative session. But for now, we simply wish you a happy and healthy holiday season!

How To Be a Watchdog For Clean Water

Photo: CCI

Here is an important action alert from Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement (CCI):

Calling all factory farm pollution watchdogs!

Winter manure application limits start today!

If you live or work in Iowa communities near factory farms or the fields where they apply liquid manure, we need your help in making sure factory farm operators follow the rules to protect our water.

From December 21 to April 1, factory farms with 500 or more animal units (at least 1,250 hogs, 500 steers, or 357 mature dairy cows) cannot apply liquid manure on ground covered with an inch or more of snow or one-half inch of ice. Starting Feb. 1, liquid manure application on frozen ground is restricted.

That means Iowans like you play a critical role in protecting our water from factory farm polluters. They dump it, we drink it, we won’t stop until they clean it up!

If you see liquid manure being applied illegally, or if you see something that just doesn’t look right to you:

First: Take pictures!
Then: Call CCI 515-282-0484 or email caitlin@iowacci.org
And: Report the polluter to your DNR field office!

Clean water is a human right and together we can achieve it!

P.S. Want to make a donation to support our clean water work or renew your membership? Give here.

Center for Media and Democracy Launches ‘Insurrection Exposed’

The Center for Media and Democracy
has launched a helpful website, Insurrection Exposed.  It is organized into four categories – People, Groups, Subversion Efforts and Events, then sub-categories. Super user friendly,  you can click on “Subversion Efforts,” for example, and select “Fake Electors” from a drop down menu that takes you to a page where you can further select fake electors state by state. Or under “People” you can select “State Politicians” or “Federal Politicians” or “Donors” and more. Nice to have everything in one place! Check it out.

From CMD:

In response to the ongoing threat to American democracy, the Center for Media and Democracy (CMD) launched a new Insurrection Exposed website this week.

The website is designed to provide journalists, researchers, and citizen activists an easily accessible resource for identifying hundreds of the politicians, organizations, key players, and funders who have spread the myth of widespread voter fraud, embraced Trump’s lies, engaged in efforts to overturn the 2020 elections results, fanned the flames of insurrection, undermined the public’s confidence in free and fair elections during the midterms, and are still laying the groundwork to subvert future elections.

Insurrection Exposed will help readers, researchers, and writers keep track of who’s behind these assaults on democracy and, importantly, how they are related.

January 6th Committee Refers Criminal Charges To DOJ

It’s going to get complicated, so here are the four criminal statues the January 6th Committee is referring to the Department of Justice, for future reference. Might be a good idea to memorize them for conversations and discussion.

You can follow the January 6th Committee on Twitter.

“Our Committee had the opportunity last Spring to present much of our evidence to a federal judge… The judge concluded that both former President Donald Trump and John Eastman likely violated two federal criminal statutes.” –
@RepRaskin

“The first criminal statute we invoke for referral is Title 18 Section 1512(c). We believe that the evidence assembled throughout our hearings warrants a criminal referral of former President Donald J. Trump, John Eastman, and others for violations of this statute.

“Second, we believe that there is more than sufficient evidence to refer former President Donald J. Trump, John Eastman, and others for violating Title 18 Section 371.

“Third, we make a referral based on Title 18 Section 1001, which makes it unlawful to knowingly and willfully make materially false statements to the federal government.

“The fourth and final statute we invoke for referral is Title 18 Section 2383. This statute applies to anyone, who incites, assists, or engages in insurrection against the United States, and anyone who “gives aid or comfort” to an insurrection.

“We understand the gravity of each and every referral we are making today… just as we understand the magnitude of the crime against democracy we describe in our Report.

But we have gone where the facts and the law lead us, and inescapably they lead us here.”

How And Why The Media Fell For The Fake “Red Wave” Narrative

Simon Rosenberg and Tom Bonier discuss how and why the media fell for the fake “red wave” narrative. They also get into other topics related to the mid-term elections including polling, data, voting, why Dems should be more optimistic and 3 main components of a strategy for going forward and winning that activists need to know about.

More Good News From The Science Front

Last week I posted a list of some of the things that were good news during the last year.   Some were politically related, some were science related.

Right after I posted that story a couple of other stories came out that really jumped right to the top. 2022 has in many ways been a very good year. With their emphasis on pragmatism and an eye for uplifting people and democracies, I am fully expecting an even better year under Joe Biden and Kamala Harris next year.

Republicans will try to block any progress with their slight majority in the US House and who knows how many decades the Supreme Six will set us back. Still Biden and Harris are providing effective and progressive leadership this country needs today.

So here are the two stories that really jumped to the top of the heap at the end of the week last week. One you may have heard of, the other may be news to you since it happened in Britain.

Over in England a girl who had incurable T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia was treated with what is called base editing. Here is a bit of the story from the BBC:

A teenage girl’s incurable cancer has been cleared from her body in the first use of a revolutionary new type of medicine.

< skip>

So doctors at Great Ormond Street Hospital used “base editing” to perform a feat of biological engineering to build her a new living drug.

Six months later the cancer is undetectable, but Alyssa is still being monitored in case it comes back.

Alyssa, who is 13 and from Leicester, was diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukaemia in May last year.

This is truly incredible and a huge step forward. While the process is not brand new, it is only about 6 years old. Her very acute, uncurable cancer is now undetectable!

The other story has been blasted all over the US. Scientist at Lawrence Livermore Labs in California extracted more energy from a controlled fusion process than they entered in to the process to get the fusion going. I will turn the explanation over to the one and only Neil DeGrasse Tyson who explains things in a way that most of us can understand: (12 minutes)

And as a kicker, the laugh of the year from some overblown blowhard who was once our president. After teasing a “major announcement” on Wednesday Donald Trump floated a lead balloon on Thursday morning that he was selling “non fungible tokens” of himself in various cos-play poses set up as trading cards.

Many of his followers took it as evidence that he had finally gone round the bend. More likely the truth is that he is using this ploy as a way for some foreign bad guys to launder money. Trump is as sleazy as they come. Since the “cards” sold out within a day, one must be suspect of what the real purpose of these cards is.

I tend to agree with this poster on twitter:

adhdwonderwoman (my only acct here)

@adhdwonderwoman

He’s Not Selling Cards!

The $100 digital cards that not even his most devout boomer followers will be buying for themselves or their grandkids is a front! He is funneling foreign money in through the decentralized, unregulated NFT market. Really stop and think about it.

Sunday Funday: Last One Before Christmas Edition

Shelter Kitten gets all the presents (2 minutes):

Man, what a great gift idea a certain former president came up with for this year’s gift giving! An NFT of himself dressed up in kiddie playtime outfits. Only $100! Great for laundering money. Great way for that certain former president to avoid taxes. Another scam like all his other scams.

What do I want for Christmas? A certain former president locked up with the key accidentally lost. The cell should be under the Rocky Mountains in Colorado with no possibility of parole. And a warm cell for all those who helped him in his fraud.

I will throw in some seasonal and Christmas questions

A) Iowa gets top billing today. A police chief of what small Iowa town used his office to obtain machine guns for resale in his and a friend’s gun store?

B) What is an NFT anyway?

C) Monday will be must see TV as what House committee meets for the last time?

D) Just a bit later this morning the World Cup comes to an end as what two traditional powers meet in the final?

F) Why do people like snow men?

G) Due to a resurgence of covid, the White House is resuming what program?

H) After huge protests, China has relented on its harsh lockdown policies. As a result what major city is like a ghost town as residence as citizens self quarantine during a huge covid resurgence?

J) According to what popular Christmas song do “Strings of street lights, even stop lights blink a bright red and green”?

K) What Republican governor and presidential candidate is having vaccines investigated in his state because “vaccines cost lives”?

L) What leader of the US House had a portrait unveiled in the capitol Wednesday?

Yes, People Are Leaving Evangelical Churches Due To Politics

This is the time of year when Christian Churches put on their finery and make a great show of the connection between what their beliefs and the reason that people are so joyful and full of anticipation. But this year there seems to be a disruption in their universe. All is not right inside the halls of America’s churches as we come up to their most public of feasts.

Wednesday Brandon Flanery posted an analysis at baptistnews.com on what has become a a steady decline in Christianity in this country. Identification as a Christian in this country has gone from 90% of the population in 1972 to 64% in 2020. That is a significant change in just 50 years, so it is worth studying.

Flanery did some research and his findings were quite interesting. It is hard to boil his findings into small bits, but the major reason’s that former evangelicals give for reason revolved around the evangelical church commingling with politics that didn’t line up with the believers’ understanding of what their religion taught.

From the article:

When it comes to the moment people first began doubting their faith, LGBTQ acceptance is the most common reason, followed by the behavior of Christians, and then things not making sense on an intellectual level (an example of this would be: I couldn’t reconcile how there can be an all-powerful God and evil).

Yes, a good number of my respondents were queer, and not being accepted by their congregations was a critical motive for leaving. However, the majority of respondents were straight and cisgender, and they ultimately started doubting Christianity when they were told they couldn’t support their queer friends and family. Unable to rectify their love of LGBTQ people with the church, they chose LGBTQ acceptance. Some responses:

When it came to the final reason for leaving – the straw that broke the camel’s back so to speak – evangelical churches support of Donald Trump jumped up to the #3 spot:

Trump: The last straw:

To better understand why people are leaving, it’s important to look at the final reason, what the survey referred to as “the straw that broke the camel’s back.” While much of the data remains the same, it’s important to note that one reason moved from seventh place to third: politics.

For many respondents, politics is what finally motivated them to leave Christianity. Specifically, many referenced the election of Donald Trump and the support he received from the evangelical community. In fact, the name “Trump” was mentioned 81 times in the survey responses as a key reason someone left Christianity. For example, these were some respondents’ experiences:

In an analysis of the research done by Brandon Flanery, signalpress (couldn’t find the name of the author) lays it out in two simple paragraphs:

In Flannery’s research, he discovered that the inconsistency between what Jesus defined as “loving your neighbor” and how most churches treat people who are different, including LGBTQ persons, immigrants, women and women’s rights activists, and civil rights advocates (those criticized by the conservative religious right as “liberal, woke”) as the primary reasons why people are leaving churches and leaving the Christian faith altogether.  The term “politics” shows up in his research as one of those reasons, specifically the use of the Confederate flag as a racist symbol, and all of the baggage, including the racism and anti-Semitism, immoral worldliness and the manipulation of Christian faith and the scripture by Trumpism as a manipulation tool to get people to conform to ideals that have nothing to do with the gospel.

I find it specifically aggravating to see Christians insist that marrying their faith experience to Trumpism, based on the abortion issue alone, while ignoring the fact that Trump is not a Christian at all, but an adulterous, womanizing, sexist, racist, greedy opportunist who denies the conservative definition of “salvation by grace through faith in Christ” because he claims he has no need for repentance and has done nothing for which he must ask forgiveness.  That’s a faith of convenience and cultural acquiescence, not one defined by Biblical principle based on the gospel of Jesus Christ.  No wonder people are leaving that, there’s no substance there at all.  I left one of those churches myself.  Finding one that still sticks to the Christian gospel isn’t easy these days, and I understand why people just give up trying.

I bring this up not to be grave dancing during Christmas. I bring it up because one of Iowa’s far right Republican senators, Joni Ernst (make no doubt about it she is far right) was censured by six local Republican parties for her vote for the Respect of Marriage Act.

These local parties cited “[H]omosexuality clearly violates the Laws of Nature and of Nature’s God, the source of our rights,” the Des Moines County Republicans wrote in their censures.. This leaves little doubt that these censures were inspired by the far right mix of politics and religion that is in turn driving real people out of the door of the churches and causing them to reassess their politics.

For good measure the Des Moines County Republicans are also trying to find a primary candidate to oppose Mariannette Miller-Meeks.

The Founders were right to do all they could to decouple politics and religion. Now the biggest booster of this marriage opolitics and religion are seeing it backfire on them big time as religion continues to atrophy into irrelevance as it has done in Europe.

The Time Bomb Left by 45: Direct Contracting Entities (DCEs)

In this video Dr. Ana Malinow discusses DCEs. Very important video ( 15 minutes):

If there is one thing that makes Americans mad, it is being put into a situation without their consent and without any input. That pretty well describes America’s health care system for many Americans. America’s current health care is less a “system” and much more of a series of mazes without any real logical connections .

Ours is the only illogical system like it in the world. Most other nations have a logical flow for their health care systems that make it so that the health of the user is the main goal of the system. In the US it appears that the main goal of the system is the financial status of the financial firms that have a stake in our health care infrastructure. The care of the patient is not the utmost concern.

As Thom Hartmann has noted many times, the US is the only country where people can go bankrupt seeking medical care.

One of the shining stars in the medical system has been what is now known as the traditional Medicare system. People pay into it all their lives and when they reach a certain age they are covered by a national insurance that covers illnesses without any consideration for prior conditions. If a person stays in the system, that remains true until they die.

Over the years Medicare has been hacked away at by a bastardized child known as Medicare Advantage which is nothing more than private insurance in a deceptive wrapper. From congress members Mark Pocan and Rho Khanna comes this clarification and warning:

“The scheme is called Medicare Advantage. But in reality, so-called ‘Medicare Advantage’ is neither Medicare nor an advantage,” wrote the lawmakers, who earlier this year introduced legislation that, if passed, would ban private insurance plans from using the Medicare name.

“It’s actually just private insurance that uses the trusted Medicare name to trick seniors and people with disabilities into enrolling, then profits by denying coverage for necessary medical care,” Khanna and Pocan added. “It is long past time for Congress to end this scam and ensure that consumers get accurate information about their healthcare options.”

Before the end of the Trump presidency in 2021, Wall Street bankers added yet another twist to the bastardized system that is Medicare Advantage. That is an underhanded and deceptive way to get seniors who would in no way ever purposefully enroll into a Medicare Advantage program to be deceptively enrolled in one without their knowledge or consent.

This deceptive practice is through a loophole built into the system at the end of the Trump presidency known as Direct Contracting Entities or DCEs. The loophole works like this: If a Medicare patient has seen a physician who is part of a direct contracting entity in the past two years, that patient may be switched without their knowledge or consent to a Medicare Advantage coverage.

As noted here it has even happened to professionals who were fully aware of the situation:

The development represents a troubling new dimension in the fight by corporate interests to privatize Medicare, the federal health insurance program for people 65 or older. Medicare Advantage, which allows for-profit health insurers to offer privatized benefits through Medicare, already results in unexpected costs for routine procedures and wrongful denials of care. Private plans have cost Medicare an astonishing $143 billion since 2008, and are now driving some health insurers’ record profits.

The new Direct Contracting Entity (DCE) program similarly adds a private-sector third party between patients and Medicare services. Medicare allows these intermediary companies to offer unique benefits, like gym membership coverage. But as for-profit operations ranging from private insurers to publicly traded companies to private equity firms, these intermediaries are incentivized to limit the care that patients receive, especially when they are very sick.

While Medicare Advantage patients choose to sign up for private insurance plans, patients are being enrolled in these DCE health care plans without their informed consent. As Rep. Pramila Jayapal (D-Wash.) noted in a January op-ed, “Seniors in traditional Medicare may be ‘auto-aligned’ to a DCE if any primary care physician they’ve visited in the past two years is affiliated with that DCE. That means Medicare automatically searches two years of seniors’ claims history without their full consent to find any visits with a participating DCE provider as the basis for enrollment.”

Among those who unexpectedly found themselves caught up in one of these new DCE plans is Suzanne Gordon, a policy analyst based in Richmond, California. Gordon spent her entire professional career studying the U.S. health care system and advocating for Medicare for All. As a firm opponent of privatization in Medicare, she has never signed up for a for-profit Medicare Advantage plan.

I had called for these DCEs to be an issue in the recent election. But mine is a lonely voice when put up against a media that spends so much time on trivial issues and leaves real issues behind. I believe that real health care reform that creates a true Medicare for all system is something America wants and wants badly.

One of the Republicans chief weapons in the fight for real health care reform is the ignorance of the American consumer. There are only 2 years left before the next election and real health care reform in the manner of Medicare for all must be a top issue in that election.

How And Why Corporations Took Over Our Politics

Lewis Powell

Dave Bradley has been posting about the Lewis Powell Memo since at least 2010.   More recently, it has been getting increasing exposure and mentions on social media, a good thing.  Sheldon Whitehouse covered it in Speech 1 of his series The Scheme: The Powell Report.  Jen Senko gave it substantial time in her award winning documentary, The Brainwashing of My Dad about the purposeful rise of right wing media in the U.S. Bill Moyers was all over it in 2012. It was a turning point for democracy.

If you don’t know what the Powell Memo is, Robert Reich provides a decent explanation. But you still should read the actual memo linked here.
