Polar Vortex, The Electric Grid And National Emergencies

Image (8) prayer-wont-solve-climate-change-150x150.jpg for post 4400

Let’s Talk About Real National Emergencies

Considering that our current administration and his party are putting huge emphasis on building an antiquated wall system on our southern border for a problem that is mostly fiction you would think that they may really throw some effort into a real problems with real life serious consequences. You would be wrong.

As we were going through the deep freeze the last couple of weeks, my mind kept returning to an article I wrote nearly two years ago concerning the possibility that Russians have been able to hack into our electric system. Imagine the havoc that Russians or some other enemy could wreak if they decided to hack into our electric systems with a temperature of -26 degrees F and a wind chill of -50 degrees F.

People would literally be freezing to death in their homes or dying in the fires they set trying to stay warm. Water pipes and sewage systems would be frozen and broken. Food would be frozen in a short time. The damage done in a short period of time would be among the greatest catastrophes we have ever faced.  A good, short analysis of what a cyber attack on the US electric system could lead to can be found here.

The cyber attacks I wrote about in that article took place in the spring of 2017, fully 2 years ago. Has our government done anything to make our system less vulnerable in the mean time? No. Maybe the fact that most experts point at Russia as the source of the hacking has made investigations and actions against the perpetrators a low priority in this administration.

The antiquated and highly vulnerable electric infrastructure is a national emergency winter or summer.

What else is a national emergency? How about a banking system that has consolidated itself into a few companies that are truly too big to fail? After citing a too consolidated banking system as one of the major factors in the Republican depression of 2008, we have done little to fix the problem, thanks to obstruction from Republican legislators. Thus the problem has only grown worse and leaves the American people.

Other national emergencies? How about gun violence that kills nearly 40,000 a year and injures more than 100,000. Every one of those deaths or injuries leaves behind a multitude of shattered relatives and friends. For those who are injured the rest of their lives could well be the stuff of your worst nightmares of pain and poverty.

How about some more national emergencies? The policy of separating the babies and children of those seeking refuge in the US at the border. This is a policy that would be at home in the Middle Ages, not in the modern world. These policies will come back to haunt us in the future.

Our aging population is yet another looming national emergency. There are other smaller emergencies, but there is one over riding national and global emergency that deserves our full attention and effort.

That is of course climate change. Anything made by man, no matter how technologically supreme, will not be able to stand the fury of nature on steroids fueled by the trapped heating caused by carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. We have been warned and warned and warned. The US in particular has ignored warnings while contributing the greatest amount to the problem.

So when our Dear Leader may once again threaten to lockout the government this coming Friday to get his worthless wall. His next move will be to declare his worthless wall a national emergency. Based on the few things listed above, a wall at the border is very unimportant by comparison.

Sunday Funday: Parkland Memorial Edition

Very sad to remember that a year ago this coming Thursday it will be a year since the massacre at Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS in Parkland, Florida. One good thing this week is that Democrats in control of the House  have convened the first hearings on gun reform to take place in eight years. While many folks cite the statistic that over 30,000 Americans lose their lives to guns every year, don’t forget that over 100,000 are injured by guns yearly. These are people whose lives are often shattered. Many end up on medicaid and some kind of government aid through no fault of their own.

Below is a video of one of the biggest jerks in the congress – no the country – Matt Gaetz of Florida who tried to hijack the gun reform hearing to try to blame all of America’s ills on immigrants. In the audience were two of the parents of students of MSDHS who died a year ago.

Even Dear Leader would have a hard time beating that jerkiness – whoops I forgot about his mockery of the disabled.

Iowa Courts Under Attack

Image (2) Iowa-Supreme-Court-2013-300x213.jpg for post 30313

Iowa’s courts are under attack, from a Governor and legislature who want to put politics front and center in the courtroom.

Will you help us fight back by clicking here to send a message to legislators?

Our courts have always been held up as an example of how to best prevent political influence when appointing judges. The merit based system has been in place for decades, but now there are two proposals in the legislature that would allow a political power grab on behalf of the Governor and legislature because they’ve disagreed with a few rulings. That’s not how independent courts are supposed to work.

It’s critical that we contact legislators, and tell them to oppose these proposals. Our friends at Justice Not Politics (see below) have a bipartisan coalition of Republicans and Democrats, all working together to preserve our courts.

Click here to help safeguard our courts from political influence. Tell the legislators on the House Judiciary Committee to oppose this dangerous proposal!

Thanks for all you do,

Matt Sinovic

Subject: Iowa courts are under attack

Friends,

Iowa’s fair and impartial courts are under attack. Will you help us fight back?

It is with grave concern that we write to sound the alarm at the actions of politicians at the Statehouse to politicize Iowa’s courts.

The judicial branch in Iowa has long served its citizens well and holds a much-deserved reputation for fairness and impartiality.

Two identical pieces of legislation are making there way through the legislative process that would greatly harm the well-tested and non-partisan process of choosing Iowa’s judges and justices.

The proposed legislation will insert politics directly into the process that is specifically intended to be non-partisan. The bill gives the governor and legislative leaders – all partisan officials – complete control over the judicial selection system. This is a power grab at the most extreme level by some in the legislature and will cause great harm to our independent judiciary.

Nothing is more important to the rights we hold dear than protecting the independence of our courts. Please follow this Action Alert right away to send a message to members of the House Judiciary Committee, where this bill will soon be voted on.

As always, we appreciate your advocacy on behalf of a fair and independent judiciary.

Thank you,

The Justice Not Politics Team

P.S. Our courts are under threat now more than ever. Please contact the legislature by clicking here today!

Editor’s note:

Couple a politicized judicial appointment system with voter suppression which is already happening in Iowa  and gerrymandering to favor one party over another (which we don’t currently have but I am sure is on the wish list someplace) and the judiciary is no longer the independent arbiter of justice that it is supposed to be.

Instead the judiciary becomes yet another part of the government where partisanship trumps truth. This is something every citizen should fear.

Please click on the links and send a message that a partisan judiciary is not the Iowa way.  The bill is HSB10.

Marijuana Prohibition Hurts Taxpayers And Everyday Iowans

Posted with permission from the Winter 2019 issue of  The Prairie Progressive, Iowa’s oldest progressive newsletter.

by Joe Bolkcom

Ten states now regulate marijuana like beer and liquor. In November, Michigan voters approved legal sales of marijuana to adults. The newly elected Governors of both Minnesota and Illinois want to do the same.

Iowa should follow their lead. Marijuana prohibition hasn’t worked and has hurt taxpayers and everyday Iowans.

Despite the best efforts of the criminal justice system to protect us from this overly exaggerated threat and the hundreds of millions spent on police, courts, jails, and prisons, Iowans are not safer or healthier.

By legalizing and regulating the sale of marijuana to Iowa adults, we can refocus our criminal justice system on serious crime and expand substance abuse treatment programs.  We can also capture our state’s share of the jobs, revenue, and commerce created by regulating marijuana like recreational alcohol.

It’s time to face facts. In Iowa, marijuana is available to about anyone that seeks it out. Iowans objectively know that it’s less toxic, less addictive, and less lethal than the recreational alcohol that is available at every HyVee, Casey’s, and Kum and Go.

Iowa’s continued criminalization of marijuana imposes a heavy burden on Iowa families in the form of lost jobs, legal bills, jail time, broken families, violence, and crime. Why should we keep spending millions and millions each year to arrest, prosecute, jail, and punish thousands of Iowans for possessing a substance less harmful than legal recreational alcohol?

I’m not naïve. As with the legalization of beer and liquor, marijuana legalization will bring its own set of challenges.

One major concern is the use of marijuana by teenagers. Like smoking cigarettes or drinking alcohol, using marijuana is bad for their health and social development. That’s why teen use of marijuana must be aggressively discouraged and prevented.

Other states have done this successfully. After moving from marijuana prohibition to marijuana regulation, government surveys indicate that teen marijuana use has not increased.

It is time for Iowans, and the Iowa Legislature, to take a hard, clear look at what Iowa’s marijuana prohibition has accomplished.

Despite marijuana prohibition, Iowa has a working underground market for marijuana. Just like with illegal alcohol in the 1930s, Iowa’s illegal underground marijuana market is profitable, unregulated, untaxed, and supplying its customers.

The enforcement of marijuana prohibition has been grossly unequal. Even though Black and White Iowans use marijuana at the same rate, Black Iowans are four times more likely to be arrested for marijuana possession. A law that cannot be equally enforced is blatantly unfair and erodes trust in our justice system.

Opioid epidemic! This headline, in various forms, has been splashed across the national news frequently in the last few years. Our nation indeed has serious problems with addiction to many kinds of opioids; fortunately, these problems are being treated as public health rather than criminal issues. It is fair to conclude that this smarter, more compassionate treatment of opioid abuse is related to demographics. Opioid abusers and addicts are more often white and middle or upper class. They are not four times more likely to be arrested for possession of opioids, as black Iowans are for possession of marijuana. Marijuana is also less likely than opioids to be linked to violent crime. A law that cannot be equally enforced is a bad law.

Early reports from states with legal marijuana show a decrease in opioid abuse.

The prohibition price tag is enormous. Over the decades Iowans have spent hundreds of millions on marijuana prohibition. In 2018, Iowa taxpayers paid $12 million to enforce 5,200 marijuana possession violations.

It’s time to end Iowa’s failed, unfair, costly history of marijuana prohibition.

We should replace Iowa’s criminal marijuana underground market with one that is well- regulated. Estimates project that state regulation and taxation of the legal sale of marijuana will create 4,000-7,000 new jobs across Iowa and generate between $40-$70 million in new state and local revenue.

Those new resources can help us respond with effective treatment for the abuse of marijuana, alcohol, other drugs, and tobacco. New revenue can also be used for urgently needed new investments in early, healthy childhood development and child care assistance.

As the Midwest moves forward to regulate marijuana use for adults, Iowans will need to decide if we will continue wasting money and destroying lives on failed prohibition, or if we will learn lessons from other states and capture our share of jobs, revenue, and commerce by regulating marijuana like recreational alcohol.

Royceann Porter Honored At State Capitol For Black History Month

Royceann Porter

Yesterday Royceann Porter, the first black person in Johnson county history to be  elected to a county-wide office was honored at the Capitol for Black History Month.

Mary Mascher tells us more about Royceann:

“In recognition of Black History Month it is my privilege to honor a very special Iowan, Royceann Porter. On Dec. 18th of last year Royceann made history, as the first African American to hold a county-wide office in Johnson County. She now serves as one of four women on our five-member Board of Supervisors.

During one of the League of Women Voters Forums before the election, Royceann said,

“As a black woman, I see our community through a different set of experiences than anyone who has ever been on the Johnson County Board of Supervisors. Some of the experiences are good and hopeful, and some are not. We are lucky to have people on the board who take equity and equality seriously. That is something I will do too.”

Royceann can be described in so many ways; wife, mother, friend, neighbor, volunteer, activist, and leader. As a community leader devoted to improving the lives of her neighbors, Royceann has been an advocate on a wide variety of issues including mental health services, affordable housing, veterans’ services, workers’ rights, and restorative justice.

Royceann holds a degree in social work from Kirkwood Community College and has served on the Iowa City Community Police Review Board. Most recently she served as a project organizer for the Teamsters Local 238. She has also served on The Coalition for Racial Justice, Juvenile Justice Youth Development Policy Board, The Iowa City Community School District’s Equity Committee, The African American Parents’ Group and the Martin Luther King Teachers’ Inservice Planning Committee.

We are all looking forward to Royceann’s leadership on the Board of Supervisors. Her community activism has prepared her for the challenges and responsibilities of being a good board member. I know she will work with others to improve the quality of life not only for minority residents but for all residents in Johnson County.

Ako [Rep. Ako Abdul-Samard] you will vouch for my statement that Royceann is one of the best Mac and Cheese chefs in the state.

Please join me in honoring, my friend, Royceann Porter.”

Des Moines, Iowa — Senator Joni Ernst’s constituents will pay her a visit at her office locations across the state on Wednesday, February 6 and call on her to vote ‘no’ on President Trump’s hand-picked Attorney General nominee, William Barr. Follow Grassley’s Radio Address

A BFIA reader submitted this note bringing our attention to Grassley’s radio address apparently broadcast from local stations in Conservativeland, Iowa. Click on the link below to listen to Grassley’s “Capitol Hill Report.”

###

Although I am no fan of Chuck Grassley, I try to catch all of his radio addresses, under the principle of knowing what the other side is doing. These radio interviews seem to always involve stations in “safe” country, with conservative interviewers. Today’s [Jan. 24] effort has Grassley stating that President Trump was sitting all alone in the White House since December 22, waiting for the Democrats to come and negotiate with him. Apparently, Pelosi’s and Schumer’s visit to the White House on January 9 for that purpose (and Trump’s tantrum) went unnoticed by Grassley.

Let’s Talk About Saving Some Serious Money, Joni!

And Quit Trying To Divert Our Attention From The Real Issues

If you haven’t read Trish Nelson’s take down of Joni Ernst’s latest attempt to distract Iowans with her little schtick called “Make ‘Em Squeal” it is definitely worth the few minutes it will take to read.

Ernst has been sending out these little missives for years. They are pretty much useless except to try to make her into some kind of hero of the taxpayer. Funny thing about that, while she talks about saving pennies she constantly votes to give away billions to the Republican donor class either through pork barrel projects or through massive tax cuts for the rich.

How much did Ernst help piss away during the Trump Government Employee Lockout by not confronting Mitch McConnell or the current president. Let’s not even mention the lives the Trump Lockout screwed up. And there is another one coming right down the pipe. Will Ernst do anything to stand up against the waste and foolishness next time or roll into a ball in the corner of her office? You can guess what I think.

Even a lowly comedian like Samantha Bee can easily see where we could save more than a few pennies. Sam’s analysis is a lot more thorough than Ernst and unlike Ernst’s little schtick, Sam Bee’s analysis is based on fact.

Know what? Maybe we could lure Sam Bee to live in Iowa and we could have her run for the senate. At least when we were laughing at Sam Bee it would be because she wanted us to laugh at her.

Plus we would know Sam would be serious and not just trying to distract us from a vote for a person to be Attorney General who wants to let Trump get away with treason – or a SCOTUS candidate who wants the same thing.

But Joni has hitched her Harley to Trump and she wants to hide it as much as she can. So little distractions like “Make ‘Em Squeal” divert our attention as the investigation of Russian sabotage of our elections creep ever closer to Trump himself.
