Sunday Funday: Democracy? Who Cares? Edition

voting reforms unfair to Trump party

tip of the hat to EarlG at democraticunderground.com

As you can see, the Trump party just doesn’t care much for that idea of democracy. Look – it’s you guys that screw up their nice little set up with all those great emoluments. Of course we know that God appointed our Dear Leader just as Sarah Sanders told us last week. Dear Leader is doing God’s work which frequently happens to be the same as what Vladimir Putin wants.

But please don’t let the end of democracy bother your pretty little minds – today is Super Bowl Sunday. This one is named for Dear Leader. It is Super Bowl Lie, Lie, Lie, Lie! Some team is playing some other team someplace today! Cold Hamburgers will be served to the winner in the Oval Office some time. Best of luck to all the commercials!

Oy Vey! Another crazy week.

Trump Comes Out Strongly Against Intelligence

By Andy Borowitz

“I’ve listened to these people with so-called intelligence go on and on, and, quite frankly, it’s a waste of time,” the President said. “I know a lot more than people with intelligence do.”

Zach Wahls First Speech In The Iowa Senate

Zach Wahls is a young man with a lot of promise. His first speech on the Iowa State Senate floor Wednesday did nothing to dispel that notion.

Senator Wahls speaks of an encounter with homeless man in Iowa when the actual temperature lingers near -32 degrees. The man describes warming centers and places where he could sleep as not really fit to sleep in due to bugs and sanitation.

Senator Wahls then ends with some questions and observations he drew from this encounter.

Surely anyone who hears this speech will be thinking of many of the same questions – where are our priorities when there are people who are homeless must risk death during the extreme weather? How do we as a state justify huge tax cuts for those who have much when there are many among that can barely afford food or shelter?

Good start, Senator Wahls. Keep asking those questions that should make the comfortable uncomfortable. And please keep looking for solutions!

Joni Ernst Wins Own “Squeal” Award For Mocking Veterinary Science On Taxpayer Dime

As a graduate of Iowa State University, does Iowa’s junior senator really not understand the value of veterinary science? Does she really think veterinary science and animal health research is a joke?  You would think so if you read her monthly newsletter.

Joni Ernst’s “Make ’em Squeal” newsletter should win her own award for her flagrant, ignorant waste of taxpayer money.  We wonder who is writing her idiotic, shamefully misleading newsletter at the taxpayer’s expense.  We suspect it is the hand of a professional think tank or a professional writer of propaganda.  No way she has staff sitting around writing this clever, deceitful crap.  I was unable to determine if it is a template that other senators send, but guessing not.

The “Make ’em Squeal” newsletter always selects some cause that gets a million or so dollars in funding that they can package, mis-characterize, leave out the details and denigrate in such a way as to spark the ire of the Fox News crowd and make it seem like Joni is a watch dog of wasteful spending. It reads very much like right wing talk radio sounds.  I look at it regularly, but I don’t usually bother to check it out, as I presume most people don’t because who has the time to chase every conservative lie or distortion they put out there.  But this one caught my attention.

To illustrate, first I present the research at Ohio State University the newsletter is hitting.

Click to access nihms415820.pdf

Department of Veterinary Preventative Medicine, The Ohio State University

Feline interstitial cystitis (FIC) is a chronic pain syndrome of domestic cats. Cats with FIC have chronic, recurrent lower urinary tract signs (LUTS) and other comorbid disorders that are exacerbated by stressors. The aim of this study was to evaluate behavioral and physiological responses of healthy cats and cats diagnosed with FIC after exposure to a five day stressor.

Both the behavioral and physiological coping responses of cats must be better understood to ensure the well-being of cats kept in cages for various purposes. For example, animal housing for laboratories historically has been designed with practical and economical considerations in mind for human beings, often with inadequate consideration for the comfort of the animal or provision of opportunities to cope.

The aim of this study was to evaluate behavioral and physiological responses of healthy cats and cats diagnosed with FIC during a five day exposure to stressors. Physiologic parameters measured included serum cortisol concentrations, leukogram, and expression of the genes for the pro-inflammatory cytokines..

And this:

https://news.osu.edu/ohio-state-study-even-healthy-cats-act-sick-when-their-routine-is-disrupted/

Previous research has indicated that a diagnosis of interstitial cystitis, known as IC, in cats is strongly associated with a number of other health problems. The fact that healthy cats exhibit some of those same problems in the face of stress suggests that veterinary clinicians should consider cats’ environmental conditions during assessments for health problems, researchers say.

The researchers documented sickness behaviors in healthy cats and in cats with feline interstitial cystitis, a chronic illness characterized by recurring discomfort or pain in the bladder and often both an urgent and frequent need to urinate.

Ohio State’s Veterinary Medical Center was housing 12 healthy cats and 20 cats with IC, including those at risk of euthanasia because their previous owners were unable to tolerate their sickness behaviors, for a variety of other research efforts, many related to better understanding the chronic disease.

In contrast, here is how Joni Ernst characterized this research.  I give you the “Make ’em Squeal” newsletter, uncut, funded by YOU, the TAXPAYER.

###

Squeal Award: Pampering cats costs millions, fur real.

Beethoven probably didn’t have his furry feline in mind when he composed “Fur Elise,” but government-funded research has discovered that classical music can make even grumpy cats purr.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) supported ten different cat studies—funded from grants totaling $1.3 MILLION of your money—that concluded classical music has an effect on cat behaviors. For example, a study found that after playing classical music for cats every day, they were less likely to poop outside of the litter box or cough up hairballs.

Yes, that’s right. Ten studies, just like this one, funded by YOU, the TAXPAYER.

In one study, researchers observed and compared the behaviors of healthy and chronically ill cats in both pampered and “unpredictable situations.” Can we guess the results? Yep, a pampered cat shows fewer signs of sickness while the “unpredictable situations” caused the cats to freak out.

The cat’s meow: Cats that are pampered are less likely to cough up hairballs or poop outside the litter box.

And not to worry! NIH supported a much-needed follow-up study to see how cats reacted when the pampering included receiving daily toys, treats and “auditory enrichment,” specifically, the CD: The Best of Vivaldi. The conclusion? When the pampering ended, cats would refuse food, cough up hairballs or choose not to use the litter box.

In addition to these ten cat studies being pointless, they don’t comply with a law requiring disclosure of the cost to taxpayers for a federally funded project. That’s why I’m asking the Government Accountability Office (GAO) to find out why NIH studies are refusing to disclose the cost of these studies. We must ensure your hard-earned money isn’t being wasted on studies like this!

These cat studies are yet another example of taxpayer dollars being tossed around like a “ball of yarn.” For this reason, I’ve awarded this month’s meow, I mean squeal, award to the National Institutes of Health!

A Good Day To Talk About Climate Change

Almost as if he was taking orders from someone, the current president took the occasion of a polar vortex and record cold temps in the midwest to once more display his stupidity on climate change:

Donald J. Trump

✔

@realDonaldTrump

In the beautiful Midwest, windchill temperatures are reaching minus 60 degrees, the coldest ever recorded. In coming days, expected to get even colder. People can’t last outside even for minutes. What the hell is going on with Global Waming? Please come back fast, we need you!

190K

8:28 PM – Jan 28, 2019

Today is a perfect day to think and talk about climate change. We have just come through another bout of extreme weather. This was kind of a mild event compared to some of the other extreme weather events across the country over the past few years.

Wild fires in California were directly related to changes in weather patterns due to climate change. Record catastrophic hurricanes in the northeast, Houston and the Carolinas in the past few years. Historic flooding in the interior of the country.

Guess what? The US is not the only place that gets weather. Australia is starting their year out with record hot temperatures breaking records that have only been set in the past couple of years.  How does 121 degrees Fahrenheit sound?

My own daughter looked at me one day a couple of years ago and asked me a question that I was afraid she would ask one day? “What the hell were you guys thinking? Why did you ruin the climate? Why wasn’t anyone paying attention?”

Well it is a not an answer, but our attention was diverted to questions like war and peace and homelessness and inequality. We couldn’t see the forest for the trees. Now we are all paying for it. Our youngest generation will be paying most dearly. With that in mind, give a listen to young Greta Thurnberg of Sweden as she lets the wealthy gathered in Davos earlier this month have a piece of her mind: (6 minutes)

“I don’t want you to hope. I want you to panic as if your house is on fire, because it is!”

The young are becoming aware and they are mad. But they haven’t given up. Giving up is the very wrong thing to do. Fighting back against the causes of climate change with the ferocity that we waged World War 2. We have but a few years left to fight. One of the most promising ideas to come along is the Green New Deal as espoused by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: (2 minutes)

But what can you and I do? One of the very best things that every person can do is change their diet. The Guardian reports on warnings issued by the British medical journal the Lancet on how typical western diets are a big contributor to climate problems as well as health problems:

The distinguished medical journal The Lancet has issued not one but two apocalyptic warnings about our food in under a month. One of its special commissions reported earlier this month that civilisation itself was at risk from the effects of the current food system on both human health and the Earth’s ecosystems. This week comes the next instalment from another special Lancet commission which finds that pandemics of obesity and malnutrition are interacting with climate change in a feedback loop and represent an existential threat to humans and the planet. The modern western diet has become a highly damaging thing that needs a complete overhaul if we are to avoid potential ecological catastrophe. It concluded that we need to halve global meat consumption, and more than double the volume of whole grains, pulses, nuts, fruit and vegetables we eat.

Cue howls of indignation from big food and its cheerleaders, the libertarian right. Those nanny statists have gone nuts eating their own double dose of nuts! Cue cries of distress from champions of local, low-impact agriculture who include grass-fed animals, and their meat and manure, in their sustainable mix. These self-appointed experts don’t understand farming! Cue grim food wheels with only a quarter of a rasher of bacon or a fifth of an egg a day. Those miserabilist medics want us all to go vegan!

Yet the evidence that our diets are the largest cause of climate change and biodiversity loss is now overwhelming. The global food system is responsible for up to 30% of total greenhouse gas emissions, the livestock sector on its own accounting for about half of that total or 14.5%. The modern western way of eating is also making very large numbers of people fat and sick as other parts of the world adopt it. Diet-related diseases now cause roughly 11 million deaths a year as preventable cancers, heart disease and strokes, obesity and diabetes have spread along with our way of eating. More than 800 million people are estimated to be chronically undernourished, and 2 billion suffer from micronutrient deficiencies, yet at the same time 2 billion are overweight or obese. In poorer counties you can even find obesity and stunting within the same family as calorie-heavy but nutrient-light processed industrialised foods are adopted.

Much more at the link.

Here is a longer interview with Greta Thurnberg conducted by Amy Goodman on DemocracyNow. This video is 18 minutes.:

Why It Is Good To Think Before You Tweet

Last week, an eternity ago in political conversation, the internet was swept away by the video of a smirking teen and a native American veteran. Everyone was outraged but the story turned out to be not exactly what it seemed at first.  I will admit to (or brag about, depending on your perspective) that I really didn’t follow this story closely. I watched part of the video before losing interest.  I didn’t like, comment on it, or share it anywhere. I chided myself for not thoroughly informing myself about the story and its context and forming an opinion.  But as it turns out, maybe that was okay.

Today I stumbled across an article by Ephrat Livni at Quartz that suggests there is danger to the culture and to our  individual selves when we react to and automatically share and opine about everything that goes by.  Social media groupthink is impeding our individual ability to think independently. The author provides historical context for the wisdom of stepping back, observing, getting more information, and thinking, instead of taking immediate action (reaction). Livni suggests that we should be more like the flâneurs in 19th century Paris.

The boulevardier, or flâneur, was a French 19th-century literary type who wandered Paris with no particular purpose other than to be on the scene. Although flâneurs didn’t necessarily do anything visible to the naked eye, besides hanging around in parks and cafes, they watched what was happening, taking in the bustle of others and so developing a deeper understanding of city life and their changing times.

The author quotes a 2013 article in The Paris Review, where Bijan Stephen wrote of the flâneurs, observing that our virtual streets resemble the physical boulevards of days gone by.

The 19th-century German philosopher Walter Benjamin likened the flâneur to an urban investigator, within the city but detached from events, the quintessential modern artist citizen.

The author also quotes the writer Charles Baudelaire who illuminated the flâneur and the art of flânerie in his 1863 essay “The Painter of Modern Life“:

The crowd is his element, as the air is that of birds and water of fishes. His passion and his profession are to become one flesh with the crowd. For the perfect flâneur, for the passionate spectator, it is an immense joy to set up house in the heart of the multitude, amid the ebb and flow of movement, in the midst of the fugitive and the infinite. To be away from home and yet to feel oneself everywhere at home; to see the world, to be at the centre of the world, and yet to remain hidden from the world—impartial natures which the tongue can but clumsily define.

Livni:  “In other words, flânerie is a charmingly subversive act, a refusal to be swayed by the vagaries of the moment while committing to investigating the trends and events rather than ignoring them.”

And this:

“It’s possible that in stepping back and vowing to think before we tweet, we may discover that, upon reflection, we don’t really have any value to add.  If we’re all quiet and there’s nothing left to observe online, that either means we didn’t need social media after all, or that we’ve all taken to speaking only about what matters, and only when we know enough about it to opine. “

Ernst Divorce Records Raise Some Questions

joni-ernst-the-perfect-Koch-investment

Having read some articles on the divorce of Senator Ernst, I am left scratching my head. Surely many among us are scratching our noggins about one particular aspect of the divorce.

Senator Ernst in the petition stated that she was physically abused by her former husband. She describes herself as a survivor.

However, when the time came to vote for Brett Kavanaugh who was credibly accused of an attempted rape, Ernst ignored that and voted to approve Kavanaugh. That surely belies her claim of being a supporter of survivors of abuse. When she had a chance to strike a major blow for survivors of abuse and vote against Kavanaugh, she failed all survivors miserably.

Of course that was a big singular failure. Every day Ernst has an opportunity to stand up and call out serial abuser Donald Trump. Yet she has never said so much as “boo” against Trump and his legendary abuse of women. Trump’s past was known long before he ran for president. Still she interviewed to be his vice-president.

There have been a multitude of lawsuits by women against Trump claiming abuse, including some under age. While commenting on specific cases would be going a bit too far, the continued support for a man accused of this kind of abuse surely sends a message that is in direct opposition to “she will continue supporting survivors of abuse.”   https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/politics/2019/01/23/joni-ernst-divorce-husband-gail-affair-domestic-abuse-iowa-election-politics-us-army-senate-ia-trump/2654374002/

In addition her support for the president using federal employees as hostages to get his wall also seems to be in opposition to her supposed support of abuse victims.

Words are easy to say, Senator. They only really mean something when they are backed up with a consistent approach to such situations no matter who the players are and whether it may cost you some political capital. So far your support seems to rely more on your what is politically expedient for you.

I hope someday your actions match your rhetoric.

Sunday Funday: Air Traffic Controllers To The Rescue Edition

I do not know who gets the credit for bringing Dear Leader’s insane lockout of the country’s nearly one million government workers to an end, but I am willing to give credit to the one-two punch at the airport of the TSA checkers and the Air Traffic Controllers without whom the planes can’t fly. Thank you.

Oh – and of course Nancy Pelosi who proved that it is possible to say “NO” to Dear Leader and stick to it.

While I will admit we don’t know right now what broke the Asshole’s back, we certainly know who to blame this gawd-awful mess on. Dear Leader is 90% of the blame. He appears to believe that his job is to swagger around, make stupid comments and order us lesser humans to do his bidding. Don’t work that way in a democracy, Mr. Dear Leader Dude.

Also a big chunk of blame goes to a totally compliant Republican Party that fully two years into the Dear Leader term continues to do their job. What are we paying them for, anyway. Can’t wait until Joni (Shutdown) Ernst comes around asking for my vote. I have a few questions in return – like where in the hell were you when we needed someone to stand up for what is right? You sure won’t doing your job.

I could go on for pages, but you are eager to answer some questions, aren’t you?
