Joe Biden Experienced, Knowledgeable, Empathetic, and Ready to Lead

Joe Biden, Democratic Presidential Candidate, Experienced, Knowledgeable, Empathetic, and Ready to Lead

by Ralph Scharnau

The November 3rd U.S. election marks one of the most important in the nation’s history. Issues like the coronavirus, firearms violence, people struggling to meet living expenses, racial/ethnic inequality, environmental concerns, and a Supreme Court vacancy swirl around the various media platforms that voters confront daily.

With President Donald Trump as chief executive, the nation careens from crisis to crisis, leaving a trail of chaotic and incompetent actions and untruthful pronouncements. He bungled his response to the pandemic, even personally rejecting the advice of his own health advisors. Trump always puts himself first, cares little about statecraft, mocks opponents, and courts the flattery of dictators.

Democrat Joe Biden stands as the polar opposite of Trump. Biden, the Democrats’ consensus pick for president, has a long record of public service in the U.S. Senate
Biden regards the pandemic as an existential threat. He agrees with Fauci and other top infectious disease physicians that coping with Covid-19 requires mask-wearing, social distancing, and avoiding large crowds. Biden wants free virus testing for everybody.

Other parts of the Biden agenda include a variety of initiatives. Here is a sampling that ranges from climate to education.

On climate, Biden accepts the reality of climate change as affirmed by an overwhelming number of scientists. He has proposed a plan to invest in clean-green energy. He wants to end carbon emissions from U.S. power plants by 2035. He would rejoin the Paris Climate Accord.

On the economy, Biden supports raising the minimum wage to $15 an hour. He would make substantial investments in good paying and often union jobs on infrastructure projects. He also supports using wherever possible U.S.-made materials, services, research and technology.

On immigration, Biden would reverse Trump policies that separate children from their parents at the U.S.-Mexican border. He would end travel bans on those from several majority Muslim countries. And he would protect Dreamers from being deported and offering them a path to citizenship.

On criminal justice, he has proposed policies to reduce incarceration, address race, gender and income-based disparities, and help released prisoners to transition to civil society and find jobs.

On education, Biden has endorsed plans of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren. These include student loan debt forgiveness, expansion of tuition-free colleges, and universal preschool access.

Kamala Harris, Biden’s vice president selection, represents the rising number of people of color in the United States. She is the first black woman and the first Indian-American woman to be on a major party’s national ticket. “There is no vaccine for racism. We have to do the work,” she says.

Joe Biden would bring a steady, seasoned hand to the presidency in a dangerous and uncertain world. Biden knows how to heal, unify, and lead. He projects openness and respect. He sets aside self-interest, and cares for all American residents.

It’s time to heal and work to unite the country. It’s time to stem the spread of the coronavirus, rebuild the economy, honestly confront racial and economic inequality, boldly address climate change and reestablish the nation as a respected world leader.

To reach these goals, we need a president who will put the country ahead of personal and political self-interests. Joe Biden believes in legitimate science, cares about people of all economic and racial/ethnic backgrounds, and reaches across the political aisle to those who disagree with him.

Democrat Joe Biden, a hard-working, caring, knowledgeable, and empathetic leader, projects openness and respect. At this critical juncture in our history, the nation needs a leader with Biden’s credentials.

Will Iowa’s First Latina State Rep. Be Sara Huddleston In HD 11?

I am running for the Iowa House, District 11- which includes Buena Vista and Sac Counties.

In 2003 I was the first Latina elected to a city council in Iowa, serving three consecutive terms on the Storm Lake City Council.

During my time in office, I served as a member of the Lake Improvement Commission, which secured millions of dollars to continue dredging operations in Storm Lake. I also served as a member of the Board of Appeals for the City. Currently, I serve on the Judicial Magistrate Appointing Commission and the Storm Lake Municipal Airport Commission.

My service and record extend across Iowa. I was appointed by former Governor Tom Vilsack as a commissioner for Iowa’s Latino Affairs Commission under the Department of Human Rights. I also sat on the Iowa Empowerment Board and was a member of the Iowa State University Extension Board. In addition to my service in the community, I worked as a counselor for a domestic violence and sexual assault agency for fourteen years, and currently I work for a law firm in Storm Lake.

I am a strong advocate for women in politics. I believe that the participation of women in public office is essential to building and sustaining strong, vibrant democracies. Women’s political involvement leads to greater responsiveness to citizen needs and increases cooperation between party and ethnic lines.

Here’s what Art Cullen had to say about Sara’s candidacy in The Storm Lake Times

The best chance the state has for balance is for Democrats to recapture control of the House of Representatives. Reynolds has two more years in office, and the Senate might be out of reach. But just a few seats can flip the House, which would bring some sanity and stability back to the Statehouse.

That’s why you should vote for Sara Monroy Huddleston for the Iowa House. The Storm Lake Democrat is running for the second time against Rep. Gary Worthan, R-Storm Lake. Huddleston is a former 12-year member of the Storm Lake City Council. She would be the first Latina elected to the legislature. Huddleston is cheerful and friendly, and works hard. She is a native of Mexico who earned her US citizenship. Huddleston earned a degree from Buena Vista University while rearing her daughter with husband Matt. For many years she was the only voice for Latinas in Storm Lake, and has inspired service in others who now serve on the city council and school board.

She will be a strong advocate for education and health care.

Ernst Owes Iowans An Apology

This is a short video from Progress Iowa. The explanation that goes with video on YouTube explains:

It’s been weeks since Sen. Ernst accused physicians of inflating COVID numbers for a profit, and she still hasn’t apologized. Not only has this undermined our healthcare workers, but it has spread misinformation when transparency is crucial. Watch Iowan Infectious Disease Dr. Daniel Gervich share his frustrations with Ernst’s lack of consideration.

Joni Ernst has little respect for any Iowans. Not doctors, not nurses, not you and I. Her comment concerning doctors trying to make big money of the coronavirus was just another in a long line of insults to Iowans.

Early voting starts tomorrow. You know what to do. Don’t forget, Republicans from the courthouse to the White House are responsible for the mess we are in.

If you want to turn this country back into a government “of the people, by the people and for the people” then vote for Democrats.

Sunday Funday: October Surprise A Dilly Edition

Here is a parody on Dear Leader from a young talent named Songbird. This was inspired by Randy Rainbow and built on a Billie Eilish song (3:15)

Dear Leader being felled by a hoax is one dilly of an October Surprise. Historically the October Surprise is a bit of information that will greatly embarrass your opponent. In this case Dear Leader has been knocked out of the game by something that he has at various times called a hoax and claimed didn’t really exist.

Too bad that he will probably make many others within the White House gravely sick and possibly even die. Isn’t his party the party of personal responsibility? He and his family has acted very irresponsibly.

Wow what a week.

  1. The “debate” Tuesday night turned into a Dear Leader shout fest. Who was the monitor who lost control of these festivities?
  1. A mild surprise this week in Iowa City as what U of Iowa honcho announced his intention to retire?
  1. Covid-19 has forced the first postponement of a pro football game. What game was postpone from today to later in the season?
  1. Following the ‘debate’ Tuesday Democratic candidate Joe Biden embarked on what kind of old-fashioned campaign in Ohio and Pennsylvania?
  1. Pope Francis refused to meet with US SoS Mike Pompeo because of what reason?
  1. The Department of Agriculture has mandated that food boxes handed out to the poor include what?
  1. Despite warnings from public health officials, states across the country are lifting restrictions on what adult gathering places?
  1. The massive personal debt load being carried by what top level government official has been cited as a huge potential national security problem?
  1. In his first year as president, Dear Leader paid how much in federal income taxes?
  1. What two long time rock and roll stars died last week, both at the age of 78?
  1. A ’super enzyme’ derived from bacteria has been created in five labs working together that will break down what ubiquitous substance?
  1. The Iowa State Board of Education has voted to temporarily replace the Superintendent and CFO of what Iowa school district?
  1. A man in Maryland was sentenced to a year in prison after he twice violated orders that forbid what during the pandemic?
  1. Almost the very definition of the political dog whistle: Dear Leader gave a shout out to what white supremacist group at Tuesday’s debate telling them to “Stand back and stand by”?
  1. At the Tuesday debate, the Trump family was conspicuous due to their refusal to do what?
  1. Several companies announced large layoffs last week, including what entertainment giant that just reopened its major theme park in July?
  1. Thursday October 1st was the 96th birthday of what former president and Nobel peace prize winner?
  1. In a major voter suppression move in Texas, Gov. Greg Abbot restricted what to one per county?
  1. It’s about time! In 1582, October 4th became October 15th as the Western world switched from what calendar to the Gregorian calendar?
  1. Three new lakes were discovered underground last week, but not on earth. What planet has these three underground lakes?

Couple Of Things About Joe Biden

I ran across this discussion of stuttering and the attacks that radical right wingers in this country are trying to heap on a particular person who has worked on his stuttering all of his life. That would be Democratic Presidential candidate Joe Biden:

‘I am not posting this in order to endorse or support any particular candidate, but rather to educate some of you who may need it.

Joe Biden is a stutterer. His slowed rate of speech is an intentional and deliberate strategy for improved speech fluency. As a speech language pathologist, I can tell you that he uses this strategy exceptionally well and is an example to other people who stutter.

People who stutter, who choose to speak in the spotlight, are incredibly brave. On a national stage…that is mind-blowing. Their slowed rate of speech is an indication of their training and discipline, not of slow processing or diminished intelligence.

If you disagree with Joe Biden’s politics, I can understand that. But the “Slow Joe” thing needs to stop. It’s an indication of your ignorance, and a slap in the face to the many people I’ve worked with over the years who have busted their humps to communicate effectively (and to avoid the cruelty and ridicule that is being perpetuated now).’

I won’t post it, but one of the most iconic videos of the current president is of him making fun of a reporter (Serge Kovaleski) who has disabilities. Making fun of people with disabilities is what bullies do. Make no doubt that the current president is one of the biggest bullies in. The world.

The strategy of the current president in last Tuesday’s “debate” was to be a giant jerk in order to try to get Biden to stutter. This will be his strategy for the remaining joint appearances. The Debate Commission is trying to come up with a strategy that will not allow the current president to interrupt and dominate the air time on the remaining appearances.

Since the strategy is to try to get Biden to stutter through his outrageous actions, I doubt the current president will accept any changes in format. Will this lead to the cancellation of the remaining “debates?” Stay tuned. The current president is a bully. He will give no quarter to what he perceives as an enemy.

Candidate Biden, on the other hand, is quite brave to face up to the bully and back him down. The current president came off as the fool that he is. America needs a man of Biden’s character.

In another story, we have Biden helping out a a person who has worked for decades for Republican politics.

Frank Luntz shocked the hell out of me

He was on Morning Joe talking about his focus group. At the end he mentioned that he had a stroke in January. He said he was somewhere near Biden. He said Biden got out of line to go hug him. He said Biden gave him a big hug and did not let go. He said it was like all the weight he was carrying left him. He said Biden is a kind and decent man.

It is simply time for America to have a good and decent person as president. That president should be president of the country and all of its citizens, not just its base. Joe Biden is a good and decent man who has the experience and character to lead America through what will be very trying times.

The country that the current president leaves behind will be nearly as bad,  possibly much worse that what Bush left Obama in 2009 as the world balanced on the edge of perhaps one of the worst depressions ever.

We get our ballots next week. Be sure to have a plan to get the ballot, vote the ballot and get it back to your auditor.

Warren Varley For Iowa Senate District 10

from Varley’s facebook page

Warren Varley is running to give a voice to those in Senate District 10 who share Iowa’s common values. This district includes most of Dallas County, all of Adair & Guthrie Counties, and parts of Polk & Cass Counties in central Iowa. In the video below (1 hour) Varley and Amber Gustafson discuss the big wedge issue of guns. The first 5 minutes have a a very effective endorsement from Susie Olesen

From Varley’s website:

MEET WARREN VARLEY

COMMUNITY. COMPASSION. COMMON GROUND.

My name is Warren Varley and I am running for the Iowa Senate. I am a family man, main street business owner, and active farmer. I am running to build an economy that rewards hard work, not just wealth and power.

My wife Karen and I met as agriculture students at Iowa State University and returned to the family farm in Adair County after we finished our educations. We have been married for 36 years and are parents of four grown children, We are active members of the United Methodist Church.

I have more than 25 years of experience in my law practice in Stuart and running our family farm. I have served as an effective local leader in rural economic development in this district. I am active in numerous community organizations including the Stuart Library Foundation, the Adair County Farm Bureau, and many others. I have served as a Trustee on the Adair County Memorial Hospital Board.

To be an effective Senator for you, I am committed to listening and learning from the people in this district, not influential donors and lobbyists. I encourage you to call me at 866-836-4226, or email me at VoteVarley@gmail.com and please, Vote For Varley November 3, 2020.

Warren Varley is a solid progressive. You can see his stands on the issues at his website here.

Simply stated Varley stands for Iowa values. As you can tell by the video above, Varley is a major advocate for Iowa’s schools. This will be extremely important as Republican legislatures have year after year short changed Iowa schools. Rebuilding our school system will some tough work that will need leadership from the legislature. Varley can help that leadership.

What may become a major state focus in the future due to Gov. Reynolds total mismanagement of the coronavirus pandemic, one of Varley’s priorities will be to improve access to health care while lowering costs. Besides the crush the pandemic is putting on our health care system, the Supreme Court looks poised to kill the ACA. Iowa better have some leadership that will pick up the slack. Warren Varley will be ready.

By voting Warren Varley into the senate, the legislature will be improved by the subtraction of current 10th district senator Jake Chapman. Chapman has shown himself to be a very radical right winger totally out of step with Iowa values. You may not have met Chapman, but every year on the Fourth of July you hear his work blowing off in your neighborhood. Chapman is the guy that pushed the sale of fireworks in Iowa.

Warren Varley is a farmer and attorney and lives in Stuart, Iowa.   More on Warren Varley   More on this race

Action alert from Indivisible:

Last night’s presidential debate was a showcase of how little Trump respects the rules and how far he’ll go to cover up his failures. Amidst his lies, deflections, and often terrifying assertions, we all just saw how much is on the line. Trump, once again, failed to condemn white supremacists and called on Proud Boys (a far-right neo-fascist male-only organization) to “stand by” on election night. He went on to peddle conspiracy theories about the validity of the results, making it clear that he won’t commit to a peaceful transition of power, and is counting on the Supreme Court to help him do it. Oh, and he wants you to know he “brought back football” (in the middle of a pandemic) and that “China ate your lunch” (we don’t know what this means), apparently.

Joe Biden waded through the chaos and got right down to the issues we care about: ensuring uninterrupted access to health care, listening to the advice of experts to diminish the effects of the pandemic, and protecting the most vulnerable people in our economy. Voters are paying attention, which is why we’re mobilizing all week around Biden and progressives who need our support right now.

Our democracy is on the ballot — we need elected officials who are accountable to the people. Here’s how to do your part this week to capture this post-debate energy:

We’re so grateful you’re part of this movement. Indivisibles are showing up stronger than ever in these final 34 days. Now let’s go win this.
