Shawna Anderson For Iowa House District 22

I have never done this before. I am not a career politician trained in what to say. I am not a puppet for corporate money. I am most definitely not the political machine that seems to have taken over every branch of our government — the machine that never pushes back against corruption and greed and ego and lately, science and even common sense.

I am a woman, a mother, a grandmother, a wife, a small business owner, a friend, a compassionate listener, and a fierce and tireless fighter for justice for all. Not some. All.

You hold the key to turning this country around and to making changes that bring fairness to more people. You are the vehicle to drive change that can bring back a sense of pride for this country and all of its people. It starts locally, and it starts today. Put me on the road to the capital building in Des Moines. In a world gone wrong, I’ll promise to do what is right.

Why I’m here

For over 20 years I have listened. I have empathized, and I have wondered how to make life better for the Iowans that I serve in the salon, always trying to stay away from political conversations. But in the summer of 2019, I started volunteering for the Warren campaign. All of those years of listening paid off when I was able to engage with voters about what mattered most to them. I slowly started to feel a bit of excitement about someday running for office myself. In an at-home meeting in August, Congresswoman Deb Haaland spoke about how her volunteering led to her eventually running and I had to hold back tears. She has so inspired me to do what is right. When I looked at some of the recent bills that had come up in this great state, I was shocked. Discrimination against transgender students in sports, a bill to protect discrimination as long as its framed as freedom of conscience, and of course many to remove choice. These aren’t the values of most Iowans. After reading through some of the bills that had been created, I knew that I couldn’t just sit and dream.

What I Believe

I believe in fairness and equality.

I believe that our students and educators deserve the best schools.

I believe that teachers and other public employees should have their collective bargaining rights reinstated.

I believe that unions built this workforce, and this workforce deserves a living wage.

I believe that healthcare shouldn’t just be for the wealthy, or be tied to your employment.

I believe that people should be able to decide with their doctors what to do to prevent or end a pregnancy.

I believe that our family farms are a crucial part of Iowa’s economy and heart.

I believe it is our job to address climate change and treat our land and air with respect

If you agree, I would appreciate a contribution.

Joni Ernst: Lying Liar Of The Liardom

Signing the Police Pledge – Photo Credit – @joniernst Twitter Account

Tonight at 7 p.m. Democrat Theresa Greenfield debates her Republican opponent, the incumbent, junior U.S. Senator from Iowa.

Greenfield is expected to be well-prepared for the face off on Iowa Press. She will lay out her plans to make health care more affordable, and to protect Social Security. The link to a live stream is here.

Why didn’t I mention her name? Joni Ernst, the lying liar of the Liardom, may be pathological and I don’t want to get into other possible personality disorders. I want to be as focused as Greenfield is expected to be tonight.

What set me off is Ernst lies about Theresa Greenfield’s position on police reform and systemic racial injustice. Those are both issues requiring our thoughtful attention. By rendering the discussion into hyperbole and outright falsehoods, Ernst preempts any serious discussion or debate.

Epitomizing the distraction, on Sept. 3, Ernst signed the so-called “Police Pledge” from the radical conservative group Heritage Action. Here’s what it says:

A lawful society—free from mob rule and violent insurrection—is not possible without Law Enforcement.

Police Officers have chosen a noble profession. They dedicate their lives to upholding the law and protecting the sacred rights of their fellow citizens. As a profession, they deserve support and respect.

I stand with America’s Police and pledge to oppose any bill, resolution, or movement to “Defund the Police.”

The statement seems reasonable until we realize it is an attempt to rally around our police officers as a political calculation. I mean, who doesn’t like law officers we get to know in our communities? Ernst’s hyperbole and blatant lies about Greenfield obfuscate the issue. Instead of having a reasonable discussion about police reform or systemic racial injustice Ernst distracts us.

What lies has Ernst told? Here is one.

“But I see that my opponent and presidential candidate Joe Biden, you know that path is defund the police,” Ernst said in an Aug. 11 interview with KCAU. “It is encouraging others to rise up against the government.”

At no time has Greenfield, or Joe Biden for that matter, supported defunding the police. Greenfield has been explicitly clear. She does not support defunding the police. Instead, she believes we need real reform with more transparency and body cameras, more civilian oversight and Department of Justice reviews, and better racial bias and de-escalation training and standards, along with other long-term investments to address racial disparities in policing, housing, health care and education, according to her campaign. Greenfield said something similar on multiple occasions.

Here’s another lie:

“My opponent will support a position of dismantling our police, not just correcting injustice as it is out there, but actually getting rid of the police, which is not the direction that Iowans want to see,” Ernst said at the Aug. 26 Spencer Daily Reporter forum.

Nope. Theresa Greenfield doesn’t want to get rid of the police.

Here’s a third lie:

On Sept. 3, Joni for Iowa sent a press release titled, “Iowa Democrat Theresa Greenfield Denounces Police as Racist.” Three days later, at the Crawford County GOP Tractor Parade, Senator Ernst claimed that Theresa Greenfield said police are “systemically racist – which means that every single sheriff’s deputy, sheriff, every police officer, every trooper up there, she’s calling them racist.”

Theresa Greenfield has never once said that all police are racist. Ernst’s lies falsely manipulate Theresa’s comment on WHO-TV’s “The Insiders” where she said that “we do need to address systemic racism, not only in our policing, but in our housing policies and systems, in education, in health care, in financing, lending, and so much more.”

Like normal people we expect to hear candidates debate issues that matter. Instead of promoting that type of discussion Ernst seeks to distract from her own shortcomings.

Let’s face it, I’ll rarely agree with Senator Ernst. However, I believe that instead of rallying around the police we should address the actual mob rule and violent insurrection going on as conservative Republicans dismantle our government, assault the idea of equal protection under the law, and loot the commons. Here the junior senator seems a willing co-conspirator.

Highly recommend watching the debate. Let’s see if the lying liar from the Liardom can speak any truth.

Klobuchar Let’s Ted Cruz Have It

She is beyond disgusted with Cruz. I’m sure she speaks for most Democrats about most Republicans: (9 minutes)

Cruz is one of the worst. However with the exception of Lisa Murkowski of Alaska and Susan Collins of Maine he is no different that any current Republican senator. All of them, especially including Iowa’s Chuck Grassley and Joni Ernst are really itching to give the criminal president another appointment to the Supreme Court. Not a one has the backbone to stand up to Trump.

What is especially galling with Grassley is the way he was so sanctimonious in his refusal to give Merrick Garland a hearing when he was the chair of the Justice Committee because it was an election year. Now in circumstances much more stark Grassley’s refusal to have a justice appointed to SCOTUS in an election year is hypocritically a full throated endorsement of that very process – and the quicker the better.

We all know Joni Ernst is little but a mouthpiece for her donors, especial the Kochs and the NRA.

So while Klobuchar’s remarks were aimed at Ted Cruz, they were meant for every spineless Republican.

We can’t vote for Klobuchar in Iowa, but you can vote for Theresa Greenfield starting October 5th!

Sunday Funday: Voting In Iowa Starts Next Week Edition

The one and only Randy Rainbow weighs in with his choice! (4 minutes)

Okay – Sync up calendars: First debate Tuesday night – Joe Biden versus the Monumental Liar.

Early balloting starts in Iowa next Monday October 5th. Mark your calendars and check your voter registration. My county auditor (a Republican) told me that if we do not have our absentee ballots in hand by 10/12/2020 to give them a call.

Then follow your plan for voting. We will vote at home and then hop in the car and drive to the county seat where we will either deposit our ballots in the deposit box at the courthouse or take them directly to the auditor’s office. Be sure you have a plan. In the following you may find some reasons why it is so important to have a plan to vote this year:

  1. What two governors were reported to have tested positive for the coronavirus last week?
  2. What two major marks were surpassed in the coronavirus pandemic in the US last week?
  1. The ultimate in recycling. In Viet Nam what used product was cleaned by the thousands, dried and reblocked so they could be resold to the public?
  1. What state has surrendered to the coronavirus and lifted all restrictions on bars, restaurants and masks? (Hint: don’t visit this state)
  1. Iowa’s Chuck Grassley claims there is no hypocrisy between his stance in 2016 and his stance today on what issue?
  1. Finland has deployed dogs at airports in an attempt to to catch incoming passengers who have what disease?
  1. Residents of Edgewood, Iowa banded together to buy the real estate and business when the owners of the town’s only what decided to get out of the business?
  1. There were no charges filed against police in the death of Breonna Taylor in what city last week?
  1. What Republican senator was seen begging for donations on the Sean Hannity Show this week since his opponent is receiving huge online donations?
  1. 489 former national security officials signed a letter endorsing who for president?
  1. Tuesday’s debate: Where is it being held and who is the moderator?
  1. The wife of the late Republican presidential candidate John McCain (Cindy McCain) endorsed which presidential candidate this week?
  1. Which candidate said they would not accept the results of the election if he lost?
  1. In Iowa, four people were arrested in the murder of a black man and their attempt to destroy the body by what means?
  1. In Florida, who paid the fines of over 31,000 ex-felons so they could vote in this year’s elections?
  1. Acting DHS Secretary Chad Wolf said in a congressional committee hearing that the most lethal internal threat to the US was what?
  1. Which of Dear Leader’s children has been forced to give a deposition under oath October 7th in New York as part of a fraud investigation into Trump’s real estate businesses?
  1. 2035 – what state banned the sale of gas powered cars in its state by that date last week?
  1. Dear Leader tweeted his “health care plan” this week that looked much like what current law plus a bribe for seniors?
  1. Football legend, running back Gayle Sayers of the Chicago Bears was also famous for a book he wrote and a movie about his friendship with what Bear’s teammate?

Senior Iowans: You Are Targeted

If you are over 50 you better understand that is just a slice of what Republicans have in store for older Iowans and Americans if they win. With Trump as president and with Republicans running even one house of congress you can expect:

  • Cuts in Social Security. Remember that Joni Ernst went behind closed doors to talk about with her monied supporters
  • Also Social Security. Trump already has plans to choke Social Security by cutting the payroll taxes through executive order.
  • Medicare will be on the block also. If it cannot be killed legislatively, it will most likely be killed through another executive order.
  • Medicaid will also be a target of legislative action or executive order.
  • While executive orders may be rolled back, it will take a lot of time and effort during which time there are no benefits.
  • For those who think they are too young to worry about cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid don’t forget that the Trump administration is backing a case currently before the Supreme Court meant to end Obamacare. If that happens, pre-existing conditions come back to life. Most everybody over 30 has a pre-existing condition.
  • Therefore even if you can get private insurance, it will be expensive.
  • If Obamacare goes away, we will have many hospitals that will be forced to give unpaid for care to those who can’t pay. They will make it up with higher charges to those who have insurance. That in turn will cause insurance rates to sky-rocket.
  • As a reminder, Covid will remain as a major killer of those over 65. Why? Because Trump refuses to do anything to stop the pandemic.
  • Another reason Covid will be a top killer is because of reality deniers like Joni Ernst. Remember that she believes that doctors are only claiming people are dying of Covid to make more money.

So if you are over 50, voting for Trump or Ernst or for that matter any Republican this year is literally a vote against your own good. If you are voting for a Republican because of a good economy, this economy is on the verge of collapse. If you are over 50 or in retirement years, finding a new job when the economy collapses won’t be easy.

Think long and hard if you are over 50 before you vote for a Republican. If you are over 50 you should have experienced that good solid economies in this country have been built by Democratic administrations. Republicans have come in behind Democratic administrations for nearly 100 years and eroded the solid economies built by the Democrats. George W. Bush went from a solid expanding economy to a near massive worldwide depression in 8 years. Trump is almost there.

Iowa Issues Lost In Trump Blather

Had the pleasure of joining in on a virtual fundraiser for state senatorial candidate Chris Brase from Muscatine the other night. Brase is a former state senator who lost his seat in 2016. In his pre-legislative days, Brase was a fire fighter and paramedic. His life was dedicated to serving his community.

Like many activists, we would frequently attend the fundraisers held for candidates. Besides being a great time to renew acquaintances and make new friends, such gatherings were also a great time to talk about issues of the day. These discussions would help keep us sharp and up to date on issues that we just don’t seem to discuss much these days.

The domination of the airwaves and the internet by the craziness, buffoonery and criminality of the Trump administration just simply shoves most everything else into the background. The cruelty of the administration to the most vulnerable populations is incredible. So the cruelty by our own state government pales in comparison and is just buried beneath the daily drudge that is pile up these days.

During the discussion a question was asked about the possibility of returning the administration of the Medicaid program to the state. As noted, in the pile of daily sludge and drudge piled on our citizens by Trump and by the mishandling of the coronavirus crisis by Kim Reynolds, I (and I bet most Iowans) had nearly forgotten about the Medicaid “privatization: dumped on the state by then governor-for-life Branstad.

Just to summarize briefly, Branstad through executive moves took the administration of Iowa’s Medicaid program from a state agency that did it quite well and literally gave it to private insurance companies. The supposed reason was that private administrators would save the program money by plugging leaks where money was being spent not in accordance with the program.

Now, private administrators would have to save lots of money because their costs were something like 5 times the cost of the in house state administrators. The money to pay the extra costs for the private administrators would come out of program funds. Thus the extra cost would come by cutting goods or services from programs clients. But that money SHOULD HAVE be made up in savings.

The following are ought numbers and only for the purposes of illustration:

If I recall Iowa’s yearly Medicaid budget was $5 Billion. The administration was @3% of that or $150,000,000. Privatizing that administration raised the cost of administration to 15% or $750,000,000. That was a raise of $600,000,000. That is a huge chunk of money. As a reminder that extra $600 million was supposed to be made up through savings.

Now if you recall the savings never really materialized. So what happened was that services to clients started getting cut. These is a very vulnerable group of people who need the services. Often any cut in services results in major lifestyle reduction and possible threat to life. But that is where cuts were made.

Also the private administrators failed to pay bills to providers or would often pay only pennies on the dollar. This caused financial problems for providers, many of whom ended up losing their business or quit providing services to needy clients. In short it was a God awful mess.

And the administrators claimed they weren’t getting enough money. Through some behind the scenes negotiations the cost of administration rather quickly cretics up to the 20% range. Services continued to be cut and provider payments stayed spotty. Attempts to investigate the program were met with resistance from both the executive branch of the government and the administrators.

The transition has cost clients somewhere in the neighborhood of $850,000,000 that once went for services and goods. Now that money is simply increased costs for an unneeded middle man and is funded by cuts in goods, services and provider payments. Remember the numbers I am using are not the actual numbers but ballpark figures for the purpose of illustration.

This illustration is just to remind you that there are some serious state issues that should be faced and fixed. State voting laws need to be reformed to return to the concept of a few years back to encourage all citizens to vote and to make it easy to vote.

Who can forget the union busting that Branstad undertook unannounced early in his second round. Those changes made Iowa a much less desirable place to live and work.

And of course I have no idea what if anything the legislature could do to make Reynold’s horrible response to the coronavirus pandemic any better, but anything must be better than what she is dong right now.

All this to remind you that voting down ballot is a must this year. Also to remind you that the stats quo is a lot worse than the daily blather would indicate. Iowa needs change that only Democratic majorities in both legislative chambers can bring.

Iowa Seniors Can Trust Rita Hart

Here’s a note from the Rita Hart campaign after last night’s debate.

Watch the debate here

FACT CHECK: Iowa Seniors Can’t Trust Mariannette Miller-Meeks

WHEATLAND, IOWA — Mariannette Miller-Meeks is out of touch when it comes to the promises we made our seniors. She blames rising healthcare costs on Medicare and praised a radical Washington plan that would have ended the Medicare guarantee. She also supports raising the retirement age for Iowa seniors and privatizing Social Security. Iowa seniors can’t trust Mariannette Miller-Meeks to protect them in Congress.

Here are the facts about Mariannette Miller-Meeks’ failure to keep her promises to Iowa seniors:

  • Miller-Meeks blamed Iowa seniors and funding shortfalls for Medicare on “overuse, saying those who get care for free are prone to use it unnecessarily like patients with mild sore throats who’d otherwise would gargle with salt water.” [The Hawk Eye (Burlington, Iowa), 9/6/09]

  • In 2008, Mariannette Miller-Meeks supported raising the federal retirement age. She indicated on a 2008 Project Vote Smart questionnaire that she supported raising the retirement age for individual eligibility to receive full Social Security benefits, forcing Iowans to work longer before retirement.

  • The health care plan Miller-Meeks supports would allow insurance companies to charge what AARP calls an “age tax,” on older Americans, forcing them to pay higher premiums.

  • And if raising the retirement age wasn’t enough, in 2012 Miller-Meeks supported a program that would have replaced Medicare insurance coverage by giving Medicare recipients a fixed dollar amount to purchase private insurance. This dangerous plan would leave Iowa seniors without care and unable to afford their healthcare, including prescription drugs.

  • It’s no surprise that given her attacks on Medicare, that in 2008, Mariannette supported privatizing Social Security. She doesn’t believe in honoring the promise that our government made to these seniors when they paid into the system.

With positions like these on the issues and programs that are so critical to the health and well-being of Iowa seniors, it’s clear that Mariannette Miller-Meeks can’t be trusted to put her constituents’ interests over those of the special interests.

Loebsack Statement on House Passage of Government Funding Bill

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today after the House voted on the continuing resolution to keep the government funded and running after September 30. Earlier this year, the House passed legislation to fund nearly all of the government, while the Senate has taken no actions of its own. In order to prevent a shutdown, a continuing resolution is needed to keep the government running.

“Let me be clear, we should not be in this position. If the Senate had acted and passed their own appropriations bills, we would not have had to pass this short-term bill to keep the government open. That being said, it would have been irresponsible to shut the government down. The American people expect us to do our most basic job of keeping the government operating. Now, the Senate must immediately take up and pass this bill to ensure Iowans that their government is working for them.”

Included in the Continuing Resolution:

  • Replenished funding for the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC), which Loebsack, along with the entire Iowa Delegation, called for earlier this week.
  • The bill also includes language prohibiting USDA from using CCC funds meant to go to farmers from reimbursing oil refiners who were denied small refinery waivers.
  • Certainty for state and local governments’ transportation projects through a year-long extension of Federal highway, transit, and road safety programs. The resolution provides $13.6 billion from the general fund into the Highway Trust Fund, equal to the amount appropriated in fiscal year 2020 legislation.
  • Emergency funding for children and families who are in ever greater need of nutrition assistance due to the pandemic.

We Lost Al In The Senate But We Still Have His Great Podcast

I still can’t get over the loss of Al Franken as a senator.  But he does now have one of the best podcasts.  It’s funny of course and Al has a natural curiosity that means he doesn’t ask the same questions that everyone else does which leads to really interesting shows.

I’m thinking of 2017 when Al famously asked  Jeff Sessions a question that ended up leading to the investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.  Were it not for that question there might not have been an investigation.  So there’s that.

Al also has fun, personal anecdotes to share from his senate days. And he doesn’t mind setting the record straight on things you always wondered about that went on during his time there. So Al has a special talent and you kind of feel like a fly on the wall when you are listening to an Al Franken podcast.

On this show guests Andy Slavitt and Laurie Garrett talk about the importance of trust in our government regulatory agencies and institutions – specifically,  the erosion of trust in our public health institutions – The FDA, the CDC, and the Department of Health and Human Services under Donald Trump. And the “tragic consequences now and in the future.”

This observation by Andy Slavitt was in the context of FDA Commissioner Stephen Hahn  apologizing last month for “overstating” about a COVID-19 treatment. Because of  obfuscation and disinformation from the Trump administration, the public to a large degree has lost understanding of how vaccines work, that the idea is that they work because everyone gets vaccinated.  Vaccines protect the public health because they are universal.  Many people today think it’s just a personal health care decision. But there has also been a loss of trust.   Slavitt explains the problem with this:

“Vaccine effectiveness and vaccine trust are equal. You can have a vaccine that is only 30% effective but if it’s 100% trusted you’ll get immunity on 30% of your population. Likewise if you have a vaccine that is 100% effective but only 30% trusted you get the same outcome. So the FDA’s role is not just to evaluate the efficacy of the vaccine; it’s to be highly, highly trusted…  and to set up a process and say this is our standard and then under pressure from the president say well, we’re not going to follow that standard – that does so much damage not just to this vaccine but to all vaccines that we count on in our modern society.”
