Where You Get Your News Matters

If you are a Fox viewer which I highly doubt you would be reading our blog if you were, you may want to add some other types of information sources to your single-source habit.

washingtonpost.com/opinions/2020/10/13/how-can-42-percent-americans-still-support-worst-president-our-history/

A Pew Research Center survey makes clear the extent of the problem. Among those who get their election news primarily from Fox “News,” 86 percent say Trump is delivering the “completely right” or “mostly right” message about the pandemic, 78 percent that “the U.S. has controlled the outbreak as much as it could have” and 61 percent that Trump and his administration get the facts right about the coronavirus “almost all” or “most of the time.” Perhaps the most disturbing finding of all: 39 percent of Fox News viewers say that QAnon — an insane conspiracy theory that posits that Trump’s opponents are satanic child-molesters — is “somewhat good” or “very good” for the country.

We’ve been pontificating for years that it’s the media, stupid, to borrow a line from the great James Carville, President Clinton’s campaign manager who famously said, “It’s the economy, stupid.” There is plenty of documentation in addition to the Pew Research Center survey cited below, that confirms our hypothesis that our nation’s problems are largely caused by the media.

Just as insidious as Fox News, probably even more impactful, is talk radio.  You may notice I didn’t say “conservative” talk radio because now all talk radio on the publicly owned airwaves is conservative, understanding that conservative doesn’t mean what it used to mean.  And for the crowd that always says NPR is “liberal” or “progressive” radio, it’s not. It’s supposed to be educational but it does have a Koch brother on its board so there’s that.

And just as a reminder, Iowa has way more hate speech on the air than any state should be asked to tolerate.  And it’s not because hate speech is in high demand. It’s because the few corporations that own the stations want it that way. Just try to get rid of one, it’s not easy and is likely impossible, even if you live in a predominantly liberal area.  One Iowa town has two hate speech stations.

It’s no wonder we have gone from being a generally sensible people  to a chaotic mass of confusion.

And I’ll just add here that it turns out campaigns have terminology for this. They refer to it as the “rural information eco-system.”  I get it. It’s not just the station itself, it’s the cult-like community of believers that reinforce going along with nuttiness so as not to be ostracized from the group. Psychologists would say it’s classic group think but in the age of electronic and digital technology, the number of believers has blown up to gigantic, dangerous proportions. This was purposeful on the part of Republicans.  See The Brainwashing of My Dad.

IOWA

So here it is, once again, the state of our commercial AM radio stations blasting the entire state on a daily basis with hours upon hours of right wing hate speech. And just for the record, if you think no one listens to radio anymore, that is incorrect.  53 million people listen to talk radio in the U.S.

Iowa just happens to have fourteen commercial stations that broadcast right wing conspiracy theories and other crap 5-15 hours every day, including WHO Radio, a 50,000 watt station that reaches the entire state and beyond.

Here are the Iowa  stations that broadcast multiple hours a day of this type of talk radio. This does not need a link because I did the research myself. All you have to do to verify is go to the station websites and look at their programming schedules. And since I did this, the situation is probably even worse because they have groomed and developed younger hate speech up-and-comers whose names are not immediately recognizable as right wing talkers.  These syndicated programs are cheap for the stations to provide. It has nothing to do with what the community wants.

Vote Lonny Pulkrabek To End The GOP Trifecta In Des Moines

Sheriff Lonny Pulkrabek

HD 73 includes Solon, West Branch, Rochester, Iowa City, Wilton, Durant, Lowden, Bennett, Clarence, Stanwood, Mechanicsville.

Fair redistricting will likely go away if Republicans win the House in 2021. The incumbent in this district, Bobby Kaufmann, son of Iowa GOP chair Jeff Kaufmann, votes with his party 99% of the time. This is but one great reason of many to support Democrat Lonny Pulkrabek for House District 73.

Check out Lonny’s website,  Facebook  page and Twitter feed. For the best contrast between Bobby Kaufmann and Lonny Pulkrabek scroll down to watch the 30-minute candidate forum below the TV ad. It couldn’t be more clear who is the best candidate to represent Iowans in HD 73.

“I know how the laws made in Des Moines impact our everyday lives. During my 35 years in law enforcement, I’ve seen what works, and what doesn’t. I want to use my experience to get Des Moines working for the folks of District 73.”  – Lonny Pulkrabek

Jen Pellant Perfect Choice To Represent Council Bluffs

Hi. My name is Jen Pellant and I am the Democratic candidate working to represent Council Bluffs (House District 16) in the state legislature. I grew up in Council Bluffs, where my parents were public school teachers at Lewis Central Community Schools. My mom, Jan, taught 7th grade, and my dad, Erwin, taught high school English and coached football and basketball. Both were career-long union members.

At the heart of it all, I’m a coach’s kid. I learned many of life’s first and toughest lessons in a gym, and grew up believing that life is a team sport. None of us should have to go it alone, and we all do better when we work together. My dad taught me that you don’t quit when you’re down, but you also don’t run up the score just because you can. For too long now, the politicians in Des Moines have been running up the score on everyday Iowans — it’s unsportsmanlike, unstatesmanlike, and just plain wrong.

I believe in a vision for Iowa that honors who we are and always have been. This is my home. I know it to be a place where people care about each other and take care of each other.

Biden Defines Patriotism In Gettysburg Speech

Biden’s speech didn’t get a lot of coverage because of the usual Trump brouhaha. This time, it was Trump’s Covid-19 diagnosis.  But many are calling it one of the great political speeches.

Vote Early Available Now!

We got our ballots on Monday. We voted at home Tuesday. Wednesday we drove to our county seat and put our ballots in the county’s deposit box. As we did this we observed  that business at that deposit box was pretty heavy for the middle of the day when we saw as many as ten people drop ballots in the box in the three or so minutes we were there.

What we saw was at the deposit box. Most likely there was also a line in the auditor’s office itself. The parking lot was full, which is also unusual. Looks like a huge interest in this year’s election.

Thursday we checked the tracker on the Secretary of State’s website to see if they had been received and entered.

By golly they had been checked in, so it looks like we have voted!

So let me say a couple of things about the process. Sorry if I sound like a recording, but I hope you know just how important your vote is this year.

First off, though it’s been said many times, many ways, HAVE A PLAN! If your are still planning on voting absentee it is time to get going.

Most of us have received several requests for an absentee ballots in the mail. If you haven’t, you can print one off from the Secretary of State’s website.

Whatever you decide to do, get moving. The completed request needs to go to your local county auditor’s office either by mail, or hand delivered.

Some time in the next week or so, you should get an absentee ballot. Please read the directions before you vote.

After you vote be sure to put the ballot in the secrecy sleeve. Then put the ballot and secrecy sleeve inside the affidavit envelope. Be sure to sign the envelope! This is probably the single biggest mistake voters make.

Reread the instructions to verify that you have followed them. Once you are certain, seal the envelope.

Then you can either mail the ballot or hand deliver them to your county auditor’s office.

If you mail them, the post office recommends posting them before October 24th to give it plenty of time to get there. Remember, The Trump Administration has sabotaged the USPS as part of their plan to steal the election. The mail is till working, just much slower.

If you plan to hand deliver the ballot to your auditor’s office, I believe every county courthouse has a drop box. If you are unsure give the auditor’s office a call. County auditors are linked to from the Secretary of State’s website here:

You have plenty of time. Get going! This is the most important election ever.

Nothing makes me happier than fall. This is shaping up to be a great fall. I have never seen polling numbers fall the way they are for Great Leader. They are falling like a freaking rock off a cliff. As he falls, the chances of those who have tied their stars to the Great Leader are falling like a rock, too. Way to go, Joni Ernst! Sticking with the worst president ever was a strategic decision.

Oh – the trees seem particularly lovely this year also.

Twenty some days and Dear Leader will officially be voted out. Then we need to keep things locked down so the country can’t be destroyed during the lame duck period. Then we can start the long recovery from our trip to hell.

An Unusual Senate Candidate In Western Iowa

C.J. Peterson of Breda in Iowa Senate District 6 breaks the mold.

One thing about the Democratic Party in recent years, our candidates are more and more reflecting the diversity of the nation as a whole. As we do that our solutions to the problems of the average American become better fitted to the problems they are meant to solve.

Following the corona virus pandemic, whenever it ends, Iowa will be faced with some really tough problems to be attended to as we try to put our lives back together. That is one major reason why voting for Republicans and their one-size-fits-all solution to everything – tax cuts for the rich – simply won’t do.

When it comes to diversity of candidates C. J. Peterson of Breda running for the Iowa Senate in district 6 in West central Iowa definitely fits that description. Gay with a history of overcoming alcoholism. Peterson is the kind of person who can get things done. As you can tell from the video above using his neighbors is his best tool for the job.

Let’s let C. J. tell you himself:

ABOUT THE CANDIDATE

“C.J. Petersen was born and raised in western Iowa, where he experienced firsthand the benefits of a quality early childhood education in Denison and later graduated from Atlantic High School. C.J. has spent the last ten years working with the public in sales, solving problems and earning the trust of his clientele.

Since 2018, C.J. and his fiancé and lifelong Carroll County resident, Luke Schulte, lived in Breda. They recently purchased their first home in Templeton. The happy couple never miss a chance to enjoy a home-cooked dinner together. They share their home with their beloved Boston Terrier, Pumbaa, and two rescue cats, Lucky and Lieutenant Dan.

A man of faith, C.J. is an active congregant of Trinity Episcopal Church in Denison where he regularly serves as a worship leader. He is also a member of the Bishop Search & Nominating Committee for the Episcopal Diocese of Iowa.

In what spare time he can find, C.J. is an avid reader. He attributes his love of books and learning to his grandparents, Soren and Judith Petersen, who owned and operated the Atlantic Bookbinding Company for nearly fifty years. C.J. is fluent in American Sign Language and speaks un poco de español.

ABOUT THE CAMPAIGN

C.J. will be the first to tell you this isn’t just any campaign. It’s a conversation about our communities.

The people of the Sixth District care about our neighbors, and we know our communities are strongest when we work together. Those are the values we need to send to Des Moines. State and national politics have become so divisive, it feels like our representatives forgot how to have a conversation with each other. Instead, we’re stuck in a stalemate, and it’s no wonder so many of us just want to tune out the noise.

But the government’s inaction on policies affects each of our lives on a daily basis. That’s why C.J. believes it’s time we tune in and come together to get things done. He wants to hear from you, and when he gets to Des Moines, he won’t only reach across the aisle but move beyond the partisan gridlock altogether to pass common-sense and common-ground legislation to improve the lives of all Iowans. Read more about that here!”

Peterson looks like the kind of leader rural and small town Iowa will need when crucial decisions will be made for the future.

Get that early ballot and fill in the oval for C.J. Peterson for Iowa Sate Senate!

Choosing Those Who Believe In Reality

As the country careens toward the end of the election season, Iowa is literally careening toward the vary dubious (and preventable) mark of over 100,000 of its citizens having been infected. That is over 3% and growing fast. Of those infected we are headed toward 1,500 dead. That is a high percentage.

Yet our Governor acts as if it is really nothing. Our national leadership acts as if it is nothing. “It is what it is” opines the president. He acts as if the coronavirus is just another simple cold rather than the deadly pandemic it is.

Neither is in touch with reality. Both refuse to take simple actions which could save thousands and thousands of lives. I can think of only few leaders in history who have been so out of touch with reality. Such leaders fill up the very negative side of history.

It is not only on the pandemic that Republican politicians are out of touch. Bobby Kaufmann, current representative in Iowa House District 73 has a negative ad on the air against his opponent Lonny Pulkrabek. This ad is pure fantasy and has no grounding in reality according to a KCRG TV analysis.

“ANALYSIS: In an ad decrying misleading attacks, these claims are presented in a fake newscast format with a made-up “Iowa News” graphic that even resembles the branding of a local TV outlet. The video of rioters clashing with Police is also not from Johnson County; at least one of the video clips appears to be of protests in Des Moines.”

The analysis goes on for several more paragraphs, all very condemning of the Kaufmann video. The lesson to be drawn from the fake Kaufmann video and all the other fake videos from Republican sources is that making decisions for society by elected officials is very serious business. Those elected to those positions should at the very least show some evidence of being in touch with reality. Policy decisions based on fantasy beliefs will by definition be bad policy.

Kaufmann’s fantasy video is only one small part of the fantasy videos that Republicans from the White House to the court house are running on our airwaves and of course on social platforms like Facebook. Joni Ernst has so twisted Theresa Greenfield’s business experience that it looks like a pre-teen making up stories.

Ernst also pretends that she cares about our health care in her fantasies. She voted several times to kill the ACA and backs the current case in the Supreme Court.

I am not as familiar with advertisements from the congressional campaigns. I have no doubt we have a good number fantasy videos among the Republican candidates.

No doubt the king of the hill for fantasy videos is Dear Leader himself. Trump’s fantasy videos claim solutions that never happened and a giant heaping helping of BS on the corona virus. The stories that the Trump campaign rolls out are only worthy of a seven year old with a vivid imagination.

On the other side of the aisle, Democrats deal with reality. Their ads generally deal with real issues like health care and what their stands are on those issues. They talk about what they will do so that we do not revert back to the bad old days on insurance that doesn’t pay and the days of those infamous phrase “pre-existing conditions.”

Way back in the days of George W. Bush lowly aide Ron Suskind let the cat out of the bag letting the world know that his party did not deal with reality:

“We’re an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality. And while you’re studying that reality—judiciously, as you will—we’ll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that’s how things will sort out. We’re history’s actors…and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.”

Call me old fashioned but what we need from elected leaders at a minimum are people who will work for reality based solutions for real problems. To create policy based on some fantasy world will lead us into policies that won’t work because they are not designed for the real world.

We can only base our votes on what our politicians tell us. One side deals with reality and will base policies based on reality. That is what has led to policies over the decades such as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid that have been solid policies that have served the country well over a long period. Economies under Democrats have far outperformed this under Republicans

On the other hand Republicans base their policies on beliefs in fantasy worlds. They believe in “supply side economics” which has led to recessions under both Bushes. Only reality policies from Bill Clinton and Barack Obama saved us from disasters.

We are careening toward another economic disaster. Leave Trump in power and it will happen as they tell you it isn’t happening, just like the corona virus. Trump’s first term will be the first time a president lost jobs in a term since Herbert Hoover’s term. But that is what happens when your only answer to every problem is cutting taxes for the rich.

We need government run by people who are based in reality. That would be Democrats from the White House to the court house.
