Sunday Funday: Labor Day Edition

Labor Day 2017. Let there be no doubt that organized labor in the United States is seen as an enemy of the United States by the current administration. But fortunately for them they don’t have to do the heavy lifting in attacking labor these days. A group called the State Policy Network is doing most of the major lifting at the state level.

They are the designers of laws like the one passed last year by the Iowa legislature. Breaking public unions is the last big target of the wealthy. Once public unions are gone that will pretty much be the end of unions in the US. One of the major functions of unions is to counterbalance the power of wealth and corporations in society and government. Without the organized countering of the unions, corporations and wealth have little standing in their way in shaping society to feed their whims.

It is so sad that so many working people fell for the lies of the wealthy and voted for the likes of Donald Trump. Let us hope we all understand what happened in 2016 and work hard to correct it in 2018.

Use this Labor Day to remember Labor’s past and to resolve to help return America to some balance.

It is nearly impossible to keep up these days!

1) Old Chuck Grassley is trying to throw some shade for the current president. Grassley asked for James Comey’s records of the FBI investigation on who Thursday?

2) Speaking of Grassley, with Trump, Jr. about to testify before his (Grassley’s) committee, what did the current president call Grassley about on Wednesday?

3) Robert Mueller countered an implied threat that the current president would use his pardoning power to stop Mueller’s investigation by saying he (Mueller) would work in conjunction with what other investigation?

4) A policeman in Cobb County Georgia tried to defuse a situation by assuring the female motorist that “We only kill” who?

5) The incident in question #4 is just coming to light now, but it actually took place just a couple of days after what nationally covered incident in the Twin Cities?

6) What Democratic senator drew gasps and boos during a speech when she suggested that the current president might evolve into “a good president?”

7) Apple’s deal with Iowa government units resulting in over $200 million in “sweeteners” makes the cost of each job Apple will bring to Iowa cost taxpayers about how much per job?

8) As Hurricane Harvey devastated Texas, Texas senators Cruz and Cornyn were reminded that they fought against relief funds after what 2012 hurricane?

9) Sept. 1, 1939 – the world is stunned as what begins?

10) Even as Texans were being battered by Hurricane Harvey, a Republican bill called for moving $1 billion away from what disaster agency for the construction of the Mexican border wall?

11) Mick Mulvaney bragged last week that he tricked the current president into calling for cuts to SS Disability by telling the president that it was what?

12) What nationally known Houston preacher has received major negative press for not opening his giant church as a refuge from the hurricane?

13) The current president said he timed the announcement of a pardon for Joe Arpaio to get cover from what other major story?

14) While America was consumed with coverage of Hurricane Harvey, what country shot a missile over Japan?

15) A board was appointed this week in Iowa to advise on the implementation of medical use of what substance in Iowa?

16) The merger between what two huge chemical companies (also big in agricultural chemicals) was completed Friday?

17) The administration plans to roll back a previous administration’s policy that limited access to what by local police forces?

18) Two women dressed as what tried to rob a a bank in Tannersville, Pa. Monday?

19) As Hurricane Harvey finally dissipates, Hurricane what may be heading for the US east coast?

20) Two men failed in their attempt to rob a bar where a retirement party was in full swing for a retiring what?

And now Mr. John Fugelsang:  “It’s not the deplorables that worry me, it’s the gullibles”

Answers:

1) Hillary Clinton of course. Get a clue you old fossil.

2) Ethanol – what a great time to think about ethanol, just as Junior is about to testify

3) The New York state investigations and AG Eric Schneiderman. Trump can’t pardon state crimes, only federal

4) black people

5) The shooting of Philando Castile as he reached for his wallet by police

6) Diane Feinstein

7) about $4million/ job for 50 jobs

8) Hurricane Sandy

9) Germany invades Poland

10) FEMA

11) welfare

12) Joel Osteen

13) Hurricane Harvey

14) North Korea

15) medical cannabis

16) Dow and DuPont

17) used military equipment

18) nuns

19) Irma

20) policeman – yep the bar was full of cops in Baltimore.

Be sure to help out the victims of Harvey.

Progress Iowa: Apple Deal Ripped In Iowa And Around The Country

Image (1) progress-iowa.jpg for post 17381RE: RELEASE: Business leader: Apple deal gets an ‘A’ for return on investment

Matt Sinovic <matt@progressiowa.org>

How do you know the Apple deal isn’t being received well?

Less than an hour ago, the Governor’s office felt compelled to send a press release (included below my signature) touting the deal with a column written by someone who was listed by the Des Moines Register as one of the 50 ‘most wanted’ Republicans prior to the 2016 caucus — and they tried to pass it off as a ‘nonpartisan’ analysis.

Thankfully, Iowans aren’t buying it.

The Apple boondoggle will continue to deplete our state budget at a time when we are already struggling to scrape by, and when education and other public services have seen one cut after another. But you don’t have to take my word for it. Here are just a few of the local and national reactions to this terrible deal for Iowa taxpayers:

Des Moines Register: Apple played Iowa for suckers and we let them do it

by Daniel Finney, 8/31/17

“The entire state budget is about $7.2 billion, and we’re giving away nearly twice that in a single year with deals for companies that can and should pay their own way.”

Cedar Rapids Gazette: Gov. Siri will handle your data center query

by Todd Dorman, 8/31/17

“After giving away billions of dollars in revenue over the past 20 years in special interest cuts, breaks and credits, when will we finally say enough is enough?”

LA Times: Apple breaks new ground in squeezing locals for huge tax breaks while offering almost no jobs

by Michael Hiltzik, 8/25/17

“Waukee and the state are giving Apple about $208 million in tax abatements. For that, they’re getting a plant that will employ a permanent workforce of 50 people.”

“Fifty. That works out to $4.16 million per job. At prices like that, analysts at the subsidy-tracking think tank Good Jobs First have observed, “taxpayers will always lose.” That’s because there’s no way the new employees will pay that much more in state and local taxes than the public services they and their dependents consume.”

LA Times: Iowa’s handout to Apple illustrates the folly of corporate welfare deals

by Michael Hiltzik, 8/29/17

“We were highly skeptical of this deal when it was announced Aug. 24. In the fullness of time, we’ve subjected it to closer scrutiny. And now it looks even worse.”

And for those interested in economic development that doesn’t bankrupt Iowa’s future, I recommend reading The Real Path to State Prosperity, published by the Iowa Policy Project.

Below is the full press release sent by Governor Reynolds’ office.

Feel free to reach out with any question or additional comment.

Business leader: Apple deal gets an ‘A’ for return on investment

(DES MOINES) – John Stineman, head of the nonpartisan Iowa Chamber Alliance, penned a column in The Des Moines Register Thursday laying out why last week’s Apple announcement is not only great for the state’s reputation as a worldwide technology destination, but also is a sound investment by state and local leaders.

From the column:

Let’s look at the facts.

·         Apple pledged a $1.3 billion investment to build a high-capacity data center that will start with two buildings (totaling 400,000 square feet) with potential for more. The data center will employ 50 Iowans directly, and according to Apple will create more than 550 construction and operation jobs (a conservative estimate compared to most data centers).

·         The State of Iowa pledged $19.65 million in tax-credit incentives to help bring the deal in the door.

·         The City of Waukee abated the property taxes on the project by 71 percent for 20 years, totaling $187.44 million in abated property taxes.

·         All told, it’s a total of $207.8 million in state and local incentives and a total of $1.3 billion in investment in Iowa.

….

For starters, this deal doesn’t cost Waukee or its taxpayers a single penny. The “investment” by Waukee is foregoing only a portion of a massive increase in its tax base. The proposed Apple site is currently used as farmland, and is taxed as such, bringing in less than $100,000 annually. Once Apple purchases the site, Waukee will yield $3.75 million annually in property taxes from the same land. That’s $74.9 million in new property taxes during the abatement period. And in the first year after the abatement, the city will get $13.2 million or more per year — assuming no increase in valuation.

…

The net cost for all of this for Waukee? Zero. It is literally all upside.

…

The decision to award $19.65 million in state incentives is not easy. It never is. It’s the taxpayers’ money. And unlike Waukee’s “all upside” proposition, for the state it’s a strategic investment.

Gov. Reynolds had to examine what the return on investment would be for all Iowa taxpayers.

It’s not just about 50 high-quality jobs. It’s about spurring economic activity through a capital-intensive project to create more jobs, more investment, more business and consumer spending, and more overall growth. The growth the project generates needs to be able to pay the taxpayers back with a demonstrated return on the taxpayers’ investment.

The governor knew that the project was guaranteed to generate no less than $19.65 million in sales and use tax — so the taxpayers are made whole just in the construction phase of the data centers.

Preparing For The Wrong Enemy

The current president sent out the first volley Wednesday in what will be the upcoming budget discussions. As former Vice-President Joe Biden once said

“Don’t tell me what you value, show me your budget, and I’ll tell you what you value.”

And as always the values of the Republican Party are to make the rich richer the poor poorer and to ignore the real problems that are no longer something that could happen in the future.

While the president didn’t speak on spending Wednesday you can bet when the budget proposals are unveiled there will be the usual Republican ideas of starving the poor, screwing up the health care system, taking away Social Security and Medicare from the elderly. The same old inhumane ideas they always push.

At the same time there will be proposals to continue the useless and totally wasteful war in Afghanistan. There will also be plenty of money to continue our presence in 150 out of 195 countries of the world. There will be plenty of money to fight the ridiculous “War on Terror” around the world when they would be better controlled through intelligence and collaboration with other nations.

What there won’t be much money for is the real problems that will really affect Americans daily. The first of these is to study and initiate some real counter action to human caused climate change. Instead we will most likely have huge cuts to anything that has to do with climate change. Apparently our current government’s approach to climate change is to do more of what we are doing, then hope the effects will go away. Ain’t a gonna happen.

While we will be pouring more and more money into the war machine and cutting money to try to get a grip on climate change, coastal cities will continue to see ocean waters continue to creep into their cities. A Pentagon study last year identified climate change as a real threat to the world:

In a report outlining climate risks, the group state: “The military has long had a tradition of parsing threats through a ‘Survive to Operate’ lens, meaning we cannot assume the best case scenario, but must prepare to be able to effectively operate even under attack. Dealing with climate risks to operational effectiveness must therefore be a core priority.”

Recommendations to the federal government include the creation of a cabinet-level official dedicated to climate change and security issues and the prioritization of climate change in intelligence assessments.

Last year, the Department of Defense called climate change a “threat multiplier” which could demand greater humanitarian or military intervention and lead to more severe storms that threaten cities and military bases and heightened sea levels that could imperil island and coastal infrastructure. In January, the Pentagon ordered its officials to start incorporating climate change into every major consideration, from weapons testing to preparing troops for war.”

We will soon be paying huge dollars either through the government or through insurance for the recent disaster in Houston. New Orleans has not fully recovered from Katrina, the East coast has not fully recovered from Sandy and now there is another major disaster to add on. Will there be another one yet this year? Or perhaps next year?

With most of our populations living near the coasts it is not out too far out to believe that yet another major disaster could happen in the near future. Will Harvey cost us $200 billion or more? Can the US afford costs such as these on a yearly basis? What about the costs of the almost constant forest fires that seem to burn out west anymore? What about the droughts that have areas of our country in its grip?

And what about the rest of the world? As we continue to ignore climate change we have seen super flooding rains in such disparate places as Mumbai, Karachi, Istanbul, Nepal, Bangladesh, Houston, Niger, Sierra Leone, Yemen, Donegal Ireland, Windsor Ontario, Macau, Hong Kong and Mainland China.

This is not the time to cut taxes for the rich and plow huge amounts of money into our war machine and worldwide policing. It is time to get out of useless wars and reconsider our current military positions around the world. It is time to work on domestic problems that have been ignored for decades such as infrastructure upgrades. Climate change is accelerating the need for upgrading the aging infrastructure.

Let’s also take a real look at where terrorism is growing out of control. We can get much better bang for our buck through international cooperation with allies in fighting terrorist groups. At the same time it is time to get tackle the growing right wing terrorist groups that are a growing threat within our country.

We must also act on the true values as Americans and make sure that our citizens can eat and have access to medical care without going bankrupt.

Apple Awarded $213 Million

Apple Inc, the most profitable company in the world, was awarded $213 million from Governor Kim Reynolds and local officials to build a new data center in Waukee that will create 50 jobs.

Under the deal, Apple will receive $19.6 million in tax credits from the Economic Development Authority to create the 50 jobs while local incentives total $194 million.

Many Iowans have expressed concerns over the deal because the incentives mean Apple will get about $4 million for every permanent job created, while the corporation has a record $256.8 billion in cash on hand.

The deal comes the same week lawmakers learned the state’s watchdog that protects Iowans in nursing home facilities would end on-site inspections. Some Iowans also expressed concerns that last year’s K-12 education budget in Iowa was the 3rd lowest in 40 years. Lawmakers are also considering a special session this fall to fix the state’s budget shortfall.

Loebsack: Iowa Red Cross Volunteers Need Our Financial Support

Message from Iowa’s only Democratic representative in congress, Dave Loebsack:

This weekend, Hurricane Harvey devastated Texans with flooding, high winds, and heavy rains. As many as 30,000 may be forced into shelters and 450,000 are likely to seek some form of disaster relief as more rain continues to fall.

Last Friday, I watched the news closely, knowing that both my brother and niece were in the storm’s path. But I was comforted to know that the American Red Cross would be there, working to help Texans through this historic disaster just as they helped Iowans in 2008 when floodwaters covered Cedar Rapids and Eastern Iowa.

It’s time to do our part to help them continue to provide relief.

Already 20 Iowa volunteers have joined the Red Cross teams in Texas, and they need our financial support.

Will you do your part for disaster relief by donating to the American Red Cross today?

Thanks,

Dave

Democrats Taking on Monopolies “A Huge Deal”

Thom Hartmann is the nation’s #1 rated progressive talk radio host.  The YouTube video below is an interesting segment of a recent program. You wouldn’t miss much if you skip ahead to about 4:30 and catch the extremely important last two minutes.

Thom:

“The real problem is corporate power. How did corporate power get so concentrated? It’s because Reagan in ’82 stopped enforcing the Sherman Anti-Trust Act of 1927… industry after industry from airlines to fast food to restaurants to theatres to manufacturing to you name it… pick an industry… they’re now controlled by 2, 3, 4, 5 major powers at the very top who interact so much with each other that they are functional monopolies. If an airline, Delta, raises its price $5.00, United will raise its price $5.00 five minutes later. If CNN goes to commercial break, MSNBC will go to commercial break. It’s functional monopoly.

“And the Democratic party looked at that and said this functional monopoly is not a great thing for the United States and we’re going to take that on. That is a huge deal. For an entire political party, the Democratic party, to say we’re going to take on monopoly, that is a huge deal. Have you seen any coverage of this whatsoever on television? No? I wonder why. Could it be because the television networks are functional monopolies? That they would be broken up under this re-emergence of the Sherman Act that the Democratic party is talking about? I think so.”

Democrats say they want to go after monopoly power. Here’s why that is a great idea.

Congress Seeking Fast-Tracking Cuts To Social Security

Back in May republicans let it be known that Social Security was a huge target. (3 minutes)

Email from Social Security Works

Donald Trump and Republicans in Congress have demonstrated an inability to pass any meaningful legislation. But next month they’ll face a serious test:

Will they raise the nation’s debt limit―once a routine practice? Or will they once again attempt to negotiate the debt limit―holding the country’s credit rating hostage, and with it Social Security?

Why Social Security you ask? Because before Congress left on August recess, four Representatives announced their plans to attach a so-called Social Security commission to the routine debt ceiling increase in a blatant attempt to cut our earned benefits.

Reps. John Delaney (D-MD), Scott Peters (D-CA), Tom Cole (R-OK) and David Trott (R-MI) have introduced H.R. 3423, the Social Security Commission Act of 2017―a measure whose sole purpose is to justify cuts to Social Security.

Write your Representative right now and tell them that Social Security is not a hostage or a bargaining chip. It’s a beloved program that supports millions of retirees, children, surviving spouses and people with disabilities. Tell them to reject H.R. 3423.

During Barack Obama’s presidency, Republicans for the first time threatened to default on our country’s loans by demanding cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid―attaching those measures to an increase in our nation’s borrowing power.

And now, in an identical attack on our earned benefits, they’re trying to fast-track cuts to Social Security, attaching this commission to a must-pass piece of legislation.

With members of Congress home for recess, they need to hear from us right now. Write your Representative today and tell them to reject H.R. 3423. Tell them to remove Social Security from the debt ceiling debate.

We will not stand by while conservatives in Washington and on Wall Street take Social Security hostage.

Thank you,

Alex Lawson
Social Security Works

Editor’s note: Diminishing or eliminating Social Security has been perhaps the top goal for extreme right wing Republicans since the day the Social Security Act was first passed in 1935. With a congress of mostly extreme right wingers on the Republican side of the aisle these days, plus a president whose only concern is himself and who will kill SS in a second, the Social Security system is in danger like it never has been before.

Please let your congress member know that doing anything to Social Security that will diminish it and he or she will immediately lose your vote.
