TV With The Sound Off

Chyron – an electronically generated caption superimposed on a television or movie screen. Although it’s often used generically, it actually comes from the name of the company whose software allows television producers to add those crawling words, phrases, and images to their broadcasts.

Heather Cox Richardson is a political historian and the best daily read for keeping up with the crazy during our long national nightmare that is the Donald Trump presidency. She reviews everything that happens through the eye of historical context which has a calming effect for the reader:  We’ve been down this road before and we survived!

Some aspects of today’s world are without historical precedent, however, for example, Fox News and conservative talk radio. The presence of the new things makes it more difficult to predict what is going to happen next and how it’s all going to play out based on what has happened historically.  There has always been propaganda. It is an essential weapon of war. But now there is propaganda on the public airwaves reaching so many people in such a powerful way that it is exponentially more powerful now than in the past. People, mostly Republicans, can now lie, they can make up anything they want to say and say it without impunity no matter how preposterous. Even Republicans at the state level can get away with it. Probably not so much at the local level because locals know what’s really going on.

That’s the scary part.  We’ve never had to deal with so many people being so hopelessly disinformed that we can’t even function as a country. It explains why, no matter how bad Trump is, his approval rating sits around the upper 30’s.  I get that this is low for an incumbent president but it’s astonishingly high in my view for someone as obviously completely horrible in every way as Trump.  Let’s face it, a tick would be better than Donald Trump in the White House and I’m not joking.

There is a reason the public airwaves were regulated back in the day and Donald Trump is why.

For more than a century, American media has tried to report facts impartially. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the Federal Communications Commission enshrined this principle in the Fairness Doctrine, which established that public media must base its news in facts and must present both sides of an argument fairly, honestly, and equitably. Beginning in the 1950s, Republicans who were ideologically opposed to the New Deal state complained that this principle, embraced by the “liberal media,” discriminated against them. In 1987, after President Ronald Reagan had placed new members on the board of the FCC, it abandoned the Fairness Doctrine.

By 2014, though, cell phones and Twitter offered images and reports from the ground in places like Ferguson, Missouri, that showed up the police version of events, echoed by Fox News Channel personalities and talk radio hosts, as dishonest… and dangerous. Young Black journalists called out the reigning narrative that people of color were “thugs” and “criminals,” but their protests did not change the basic media pattern of “both sides-ism.”

With that abandonment, talk radio took off, presenting an ideological narrative that showed white taxpayers under siege by godless women and people of color. The Fox News Channel was not far behind, calling itself “fair and balanced” until 2017, when it dropped the slogan, because it presented the ideological narrative that mainstream media rejected. Other media outlets tried to defend themselves against charges that they were biased against that narrative, so they opened up their pages and television shows to that ideological story. Increasingly, the extreme Republican narrative spread into the mainstream on the grounds that the media must show “both sides.”

#BLM, Reparations And White Privilege

Photo: Trish Nelson

The success of  the Black Lives Matter movement is crucial to America’s survival.  President Abraham Lincoln believed that the Republic could not survive if slavery continued. Today, our country may not survive if we continue on our current path of racism and violence. As a nation we have to confront violent racism as it exists today.  As individuals, as white people, we  must look at ourselves.

In this segment Trevor Noah does a public service providing white people a way to think about the concept of privilege. There are white people who are poor or struggling and don’t necessarily feel privileged.  There are white people who are neither poor nor struggling who still don’t recognize their own privilege.  As always Trevor gets it and explains it in both a serious and funny way. His explanation is in response to a questioner who asked, “Shouldn’t other groups of people get reparation such as white people who became jobless because manufacturing jobs no longer exist?”

Perhaps even asking the question reveals privilege. I heard someone ask the other day, why can’t we talk about all lives matter? Why does it have to be black lives matter?  This is a question of privilege.

Theresa Greenfield Leads Joni Ernst In New Poll

Donald Trump and Joni Ernst

Over the weekend, amidst the ongoing pandemic and the #BLM nationwide protests, a new poll was released showing Democrat Theresa Greenfield ahead of Republican Joni Ernst by two points in the race for U.S. Senate.

This is within the margin for error, and of course things can certainly change between now and November. But it seems to me this poll documents a downward trend for Joni.  link   link  There is no question that this is very. big. news.

If Ernst was ahead by two, that would indicate a tight race, which we already knew. But the fact that Greenfield is actually polling ahead of Ernst is rather astonishing.  The Cedar Rapids Gazette headline did not highlight Greenfield’s 2 pt. lead the most interesting poll result in the story.  Poll Suggests Tight U.S. Senate, Presidential Races – Results suggest the state’s purpleness.

The upshot is this race is winnable.  Please consider a donation to Theresa Greenfield’s campaign if you can. Even if we un-elect Trump, if Mitch McConnell and the Republicans control the U.S. Senate they will block everything good that Democrats will try to do.

Candidate for U.S. Senate Theresa Greenfield, Rural Iowa City, Iowa

This is from the Greenfield campaign:

FiveThirtyEight just said the Senate is up for grabs and the path to taking back the majority runs straight through Iowa.

Theresa is officially the Democratic nominee to take on extreme Senator Joni Ernst, and a new poll shows Theresa leading by TWO points. This race is neck and neck. Mitch McConnell and national Republicans have already pledged to spend millions on this race, so we know it’s only a matter of time before the attacks against Theresa start. We need to be prepared to fight back.

Theresa isn’t taking a dime of corporate PAC money. If we’re going to have the resources to flip this seat, and the Senate, then we need help right away from grassroots supporters like you.

Will you pitch in $5 or $10 right now to our General Election Fund to make sure we have what it takes to beat our extreme opponent, McConnell, and national Republicans?

Thanks,

Theresa Greenfield

Team Greenfield

Our race against our extreme opponent is neck-and-neck. Theresa Greenfield isn’t taking a dime of corporate PAC money — instead, we’re relying on our average online contribution of just $18. Will you pitch in now to help us take back this seat and flip the Senate?

New Ad: Senator Joni Ernst Voted to Cripple CDC Officials’ Ability to Detect, Prevent, and Respond to Pandemics and Other Public Health Emergencies

Ernst voted to eliminate the CDC’s Prevention and Public Health Fund, which could have helped the US combat the coronavirus pandemic

Des Moines, Iowa — Iowa Forward is airing a new series of ads to hold Senator Joni Ernst accountable for her votes against the health and safety of Iowans — especially during a public health crisis like this one.

The first ad, airing today, is titled Here We Are and is being co-released with Progress Iowa. It highlights Senator Ernst’s vote to eliminate the Centers for Disease Control’s Prevention and Public Health Fund. According to the CDC, if she had gotten her way, this would “cripple officials’ ability to detect, prevent, and respond to health threats including pandemic flu.”

Dr. Megan Srinivas, an infectious disease physician from Fort Dodge, Iowa said, “The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) plays a critical role in our nation’s pandemic response, and in our day-to-day public health. From providing guidance for medical professionals to instructing the public on personal safety measures, our communities are better equipped to handle this coronavirus crisis because of the work done by the CDC. The work of the CDC should be at the forefront of our elected officials’ minds when they are making budget decisions. Eliminating, or even attempting to eliminate, these appropriations is irresponsible for our public health.”

“Iowans deserve to know the implications of the appalling votes that Senator Ernst has cast,” said Progress Iowa Executive Director Matt Sinovic. “We urge Iowans to call on Senator Ernst to stop putting people at risk with these reckless votes, especially during a global pandemic. She should start putting Iowans ahead of special interests.”

“The health and safety of Iowans depends on us having every necessary tool at our disposal to fight this global pandemic,” said Iowa Forward Spokesperson Mazie Stilwell. “Senator Ernst voted against funds targeted for this purpose and put Iowans in harm’s way — and left us ill-equipped to deal with the current public health emergency that has claimed 578 Iowa lives to date, according to the Iowa Department of Public Health. Iowans deserve to know when their senator is voting against their best interest, especially when so many lives are on the line.”

The ad’s script is as follows:

Narrator: In 2017, U.S. health experts conducted a simulation and determined we were not ready for a pandemic like the coronavirus. What did Joni Ernst do? Joni Ernst voted to eliminate the Centers for Disease Control’s Prevention and Public Health Fund. Eliminate it. Joni Ernst voted to cripple officials’ ability to detect, prevent, and respond to pandemics. If she had her way, this would be even worse. Tell Joni Ernst to stop putting people at risk.

BACKGROUND

New York Times: “In January 2017, outgoing Obama administration officials ran an extensive exercise on responding to a pandemic for incoming senior officials of the Trump administration.” “Government exercises, including one last year, made clear that the U.S. was not ready for a pandemic like the coronavirus. But little was done.” [NYT, 3/19/20]

Poitico: Pandemic Simulation Exercises Conducted During Administration Transition Did Not Lead to More Preparedness.

“Obama aides, in op-eds and essays ripping the Trump administration’s handling of the coronavirus, officially called COVID-19, have pointed to the Jan. 13, 2017, session as a key example of their effort to press the importance of pandemic preparedness to their successors. . . . Obama aides say the Trump administration’s fumbling of the coronavirus outbreak is partly rooted in how unprepared — and in some cases unwilling — it was to engage in transition exercises at all in late 2016 and early 2017.” [Politico, 3/16/20]

Ernst Voted For “Skinny Repeal” Of The Affordable Care Act. [Senate Vote 179, 7/28/17]

Morning Consult: “Obamacare Repeal Defeat Staves Off Cuts to Preventive Health Program.” [Morning Consult, 7/28/17]

CNN:

CDC Said Losing Prevention Fund Would “Would Cripple Officials’ Ability To Detect, Prevent And Respond To Health Threats Including Pandemic Flu.” “Public health advocates are warning lawmakers the GOP plan to repeal Obamacare will eliminate nearly $1 billion in Centers for Disease Control and Prevention funding used for programs like preventing disease outbreaks and childhood lead poisoning. […] It funds heart disease and stroke prevention, immunization, lead poisoning prevention and diabetes prevention, mostly through grants to states and local programs, according to the CDC. CDC’s website says losing this funding would cripple officials’ ability to detect, prevent and respond to health threats including pandemic flu.” [CNN, 3/9/17]

Sunday Funday: Fencing Day Edition

Bunker Boy (45 seconds):

Donald Trump once again undergoes a name change here on Sunday Funday. From now on he will be known as “Bunker Boy.” Apparently he had to hide in his bunker Friday as he was afraid of “the people.” Some would say he was a coward. He claims he was inspecting the bunker. {sigh} His work just never ends.

A fence was also constructed around the White House and the White House fence instead of at the Mexican border. The DoJ also brought in prison guards from Texas to patrol the grounds he is so scared. So here we are now with Bunker Boy inside a double fenced in area being patrolled by prison guards. Add a life sentence on to that and I will have my dream. Oh – maybe a different location such as Leavenworth.

Making America Great again one Great at a time: Great Pandemic, Great Depression part 2, Great unemployment, Great Protests. About what I expected.

Due to all that is happening right now, Gay Pride Month has almost been forgotten. We will try to work a few questions into the mix today.

  1. Speaking of Iowa’s primary, who did the Democrats select to beat Joni Ernst next fall?
  1. Republican Iowa State Representative Jeff Shipley made national headlines when he claimed that what was not killing anybody?
  1. In Texas 4 Republican county chairs are in trouble with party hierarchy for sharing fantastical rumors about the death of whom?
  1. In Buffalo, NY police violently knocked down a man who was reported to be how old?
  1. Last Friday should have been the 27th birthday of what recent victim of drug raid gone awry in Louisville, Ky?
  1. Speaking of Kentucky what senator put a hold on an anti-lynching bill in the US senate last week?
  1. Well, finally! Casinos in what American city were allowed to reopen Thursday at 12:01 local time? I guess this means the pandemic is all over.
  1. Where will the Republican National Convention be held this year?
  1. January 1, 1973 what state becomes the first state to statutorily ban same sex marriage?
  1. Governor Ralph Northam of Virginia announce that a statue of who will be removed from downtown Richmond?
  1. Employees of what social media giant staged a virtual walkout over their company’s decision to leave Bunker Boy’s violent posts alone?
  1. What NFL quarterback took flak after he said that “taking a knee was disrespectful to the flag and something I will never agree with”?

The Melding Of Church And State

Many of the antics that the current president have been astounding, almost incomprehensible. But the visual from Monday night of the protestors being “cleared” so that the current president could make a symbolic gesture at the door of a Christian Church shook me to the core.

Thoughts came flooding back from history classes and also religion classes at the Catholic high school I attended so long ago. It was drilled – and I do mean drilled – into us that the government should not have any involvement with any church. When it came to religion the government should be neutral.

We were taught many lessons of the kind of bad things that happen when governments and churches become entangled. Those lessons did not include the darker moments of Catholic history. They did include darker moments of the Protestant era and also the lessons that our teachers derived from the so-called “godless” dictatorships that very forcibly squelched form religions.

When the media lit up with this truly obscene picture of the president Monday night it made me think of those lessons in the high school history and religion classes. The picture should be obscene to all religious in this country and it should also be obscene to those who believe in our democratic form of government.

Why would I raise such a stink about this obvious attempt by the president to pander to a certain group within our society? It is certainly not new in American politics. There have been attempts to intertwine government and religion since our founding. The Founding Fathers had the foresight to make freedom of religion one of our basic rights immediately. Many had experienced such an arrangement in England and saw it was bad.

Seems like the real impetus for mixing government and religion began in the 1950s when the Knights of Columbus spearheaded a drive to get the national motto change from “E Pluribus Unum” (“from many, one”) to “In God We Trust.” This was followed a couple of decades later with the Republican Party catering to single issue religious voters. That issue was abortion. Republicans have turned abortion into THE wedge issue since then.

Besides abortion Republicans have since turned issues such as prayer in school, using public money for religious education, homosexuality and the rights of gays and myriad other issues into wedge issues. This is all in order to get the votes of religious, specifically evangelical voters. Often Republicans have turned these religious wedge issues into legislation to the detriment of the population as a whole.

Elder statesman of the Republican Party warned the Party that having the religious right becoming to entrenched in the Party would be a bad idea:

“Mark my word, if and when these preachers get control of the [Republican] party, and they’re sure trying to do so, it’s going to be a terrible damn problem. Frankly, these people frighten me. Politics and governing demand compromise. But these Christians believe they are acting in the name of God, so they can’t and won’t compromise. I know, I’ve tried to deal with them.”

As we have seen, Goldwater’s prediction has come to pass. Now with the country in perhaps one of its most trying set of crises ever with the pandemic, the economic collapse, the racially charged protests across the country and an international loss of credibility, we see the current president pulling a stunt meant to send a message to certain religious groups that they are the choice of the president.

That is a message that scares me to the quick. We have seen this president send many couched messages in his 3.5 years in office. This was not a couched message. This was a blatant shout out to the evangelicals. It was a loud shout. At the same time it was a shout at all those who are not evangelicals that we don’t belong. That would be mainline Protestants and Catholics, Muslims, Jews and non-believers.

If you have any doubts how bad mixing religion and government can be cast your eyes to the Middle East to see any number of governments that are Islamic states.

And don’t think this was a harmless gesture. Donald Trump is a master of TV staging. He knew the message he wanted to convey and he conveyed it.

Here is Senator Elizabeth Warren’s take on this stunt:

Elizabeth Warren

@ewarren

Let’s be clear about what happened this week at the White House. The photo-op Trump wanted was not just of himself holding a Bible—he wanted footage of Americans who disagree with him being scattered, of violence pushed upon them. That’s the photo-op he wanted.

Whoa Boy! Talking About School Reopening

Image (2) schoolhouse-150x150.jpg for post 11325

We have one head of grandchildren. Like others across the country he has been out of school since sometime in early March. He and millions of other kids across the country have been engaged in some form of ‘school at home’ since what was supposed to be the return to the classroom following Spring Break in March.

That was an experiment that was forced on the country by the circumstances of the moment. There was a pandemic. It was out of control. It was pretty obvious that as in the case of all contagious diseases proximity spreads the contagion. In the case of the coronavirus the contagion was spreading at a simply spectacular rate. The immediate obvious step to slow the rate of contagion was to shut down or limit access to places where people would come into close proximity to others.

So schools were shut down. This prudent step no doubt saved many infections and deaths. The prudent thing to do at this point would be to keep as many places where close confines are inevitable closed or greatly limited. Considering that schools are like little incubators of disease after every vacation period, it would seem that the prudent course would be to keep them closed.

That is not the thinking of those in power who want to pretend that the coronavirus pandemic is some sort of political plot by an unrelenting opposition that will stop at nothing to steal power. That is to say they believe that the pandemic is some sort of TV series that has been hatched to damage the president. Therefore the pandemic has never been treated as if it was real by those who have had the power to mitigate its effects.

110,000 have already lost their lives. Many probably would have been spread had the administration taken the pandemic seriously. We know this by simply looking at other countries who took the pandemic seriously and acted early and forcefully. As we enter summer we see no end in sight to the deaths the virus will claim.

Donald Trump is reportedly bored with the pandemic. He is all consumed with being reelected so who cares if Americans are dying? From dcreport.org:

This is about not doing his job, all the while having plenty of time to insult and demean, to eschew empathy for the ill and dead or even sitting with opponents to determine appropriate economic recovery plans.

There is a long string of choices building toward this conclusion:

  • Trump has forcefully put the fighting in the hands of governors, taking no responsibility for government missed efforts toward testing, workplace safety, even aid to states
  • His daily, repeated remarks
  • Refusal to wear a mask
  • Refusal to physically distance
  • Insistent support for protests to lift state lockdowns
  • Effective disbandment of a supervising task force and shelving of workplace guidance from the Centers for Disease Control

These all contribute to an unmistakable conclusion that he is done with disease.

The United States, the world’s leading economy,  is unwilling to participate in international anti-virus research efforts. We have been flooded with reports from around the world marveling that Trump has proved ineffective in his own country and in theirs.

Trump is being seen as lazy in a situation calling for alert, effective action.”

Trump sees a reopened and booming economy as integral to his being reelected. Therefore we ignore all science and just reopened. Cases are rising in Iowa and across the country as a result, just as expected. But that won’t serve as any cautionary tale for reopening schools.

As mentioned previously, we all know what great Petri dishes for disease schools are. Maybe some of you, like me, are old enough to remember the polio scare of the 1950s. Sending the kids to school in those days was a scary proposition. Sending kids to school in coronavirus days is much scarier because the coronavirus is much more contagious.

For one thing we know that prolonged exposure to a the virus makes it more likely it will spread. That perfectly describes a classroom.

In a push to “return to normal” it is very likely that the children’s safety will be sacrificed on an altar for the reelection of politicians who want to pretend they have vanquished the foe. This is where spotlights from the media will need to be shone on the reckless decisions by those in office. While the media’s spotlight should be shining on the rising infection and death numbers that have been caused by the reopening, their attention has been diverted to protests around the country.

And now at kitchen tables across the country parents (and grandparents) are awaiting plans from school boards for how schools will be reopened and run. Parents will be making a decision on whether the plan seems reasonably safe for the safety of their children.

Many parents will not have any choice but to send their children to school and hope they do not become sick. School boards will be drastically limited by what they can do because of budgets that have been squeezed beyond the limit in a “any tax is a bad tax” world.

Our best wishes for a good decision for the sake of your children, parents.

Do remember one thing: It did not have to be this way. This is why voting is so important. We need responsible adults who can make responsible decisions. What we have is a child in the body of a man who thinks he is living in a television show.

On D-Day We Thank Those Who Served In WWII

Just a simple note to say thank you to those who may still be living who served in WWII. The heroism displayed that day was beyond belief.

For those who have passed on we pass our thanks to those who survive those brave men. Without their heroism the world would be much different.

My Father-in-law was one of the soldiers who landed on Omaha Beach that day. That is about all we ever found out. He never spoke of D-Day or the war itself. It was too gruesome for him to relive in any part. I had so much admiration for what he did.
