Thanks, Kids

As I write this we still don’t know who will be in power in Congress. Will Democrats retain control of the US House? Will they retain leadership in the US Senate? Or will the extremist Republican Party take control of one or both chambers? One seat one way or another will make a huge difference in how this country is governed for the next two years.

If Republicans take control of one chamber or the other, Americans can look forward to two years of government stalemate. There will be nothing getting done. What there will be is a huge waste of time and government institutions chasing the phantasmical demons that the extreme right has created.

They will be investigating Hunter Biden of course. That is almost a given. Then no doubt there will be impeachment hearings on President Biden. From there who knows what bogeys they will pursue – something involving Hillary Clinton perhaps? Maybe chasing down all those stories about furries in schools? Perhaps Dems drinking the blood of babies?

They will make a great show of using the investigatory power of the US government to go after total crazy and bullshit conspiracy theories. Anything that they believe will once more “own the Libs.” To the Republican extremists doing anything that will make Democrats look bad is worth any price.

What may happen if they get one or both chambers is using the debt ceiling to hold the country hostage. As Republican leaders have already stated, they want huge concessions on Social Security and Medicare as the price for America making good on paying the bills they have already racked up.

Think about that. Congress has already contracted for goods and services that they put the full faith and credit of the United States behind in order to get the credit to obtain those products. If Republicans get their way they will destroy the full faith and credit of the US to hold the country hostage to their demands.

Because of insane ideas such as this, the extremist Republican Party was rejected in an historic way in this recent midterm. Unfortunately it was not an across the board rejection by age group. Young voters voted heavily Democratic and saved the day for the country. As Al Jazeera reports:

“According to the Center for Information & Research on Civic Learning and Engagement (CIRCLE), an estimated 27 percent of US youth aged between 18 and 29 cast their ballot in this year’s midterm election. That makes it the second-highest youth turnout in any midterm vote, which generally have lower turnouts than presidential election cycles. There were nearly 52 million eligible voters in the age group in the US in 2022.

Young voters tend to skew Democrat, with 63 percent of them identifying with the party in 2022, as opposed to the 35 percent who identified with the Republican Party.

The age group has considerably more Democratic voters than any other, with voters split between parties in the 30 to 44 demographic, and increasingly favouring Republicans in the 45 to 64 and 65 plus demographics, according to CIRCLE, which analysed Edison Research exit polling data.”

Al Jazeera does not delve into why youth skewed so heavily Democratic, but I will take a shot at it:

This group of youngsters has seen perhaps the worst governmental responses to societal problems of any generation in American History. Perhaps the only parallel would be the incredible lengths that slave states were able to stop action on slavery for about 8 decades until it erupted in the civil war.

Let’s look at some of the issues that radical extremist Republicans have been able to block or make worse since Richard Nixon:

Climate change. Young people have been living under the shadow of a known problem that could cause mass extinction of all life on earth. Our government has done little thanks to Republicans blocking any action.

Guns. Most of today’s coming of age voters spent some portion of their lives learning how to try to avoid the very real threat that they could die in their schools on any given day at any given time because some crazy person was able to easily get a gun that could kill dozens in a few moments. When they ask why they are told by extremist Republicans that guns are more sacred in the society than they are. Going to school under a constant threat of death is pretty hard.

Poverty and Hunger. Thanks to some insane policies pushed by the radical right since the days of Nixon and especially Reagan, that make the poor so poor that they can’t afford food, a good portion of America’s lower classes probably spent several days when they were not able to eat lunch. It’s hard to learn on an empty stomach, especially when others eat well and even throw food away.

Inequality. Very closely related to the previous problem just a broader view. Kids at a young age become quickly aware that their families are poorer than other kids. They understand early that their Mom or Dad is out of work and there is no money coming in. They feel the sense of embarrassment that poverty brings. Yet they also understand that this is the richest country in the world and among their classmates and family friends are some wealthy people. They eventually learn that their situation is often due to extremist right wing policies that punish them for their skin color.

Access to Abortion. Young women are in the unique position to see a right that they had vanish on the whims of six unelected judges. Along with that went a slew of medical options that became unavailable because they might in some way interfere with a pregnancy. Extremist republicans did this. And contraception is in their sights.

For Profit Health Care. Many of these youngsters or someone in their family were blocked from health care because they had no insurance and couldn’t pay. Thus they had to live with pain and worry. In the richest country ever. Yet they see other countries that have much less wealth but give all their citizens health care. Once again these policies are the result of extremist right wing policies

Race. Those moving into voting age often went to school in schools that had quite a mix of races – white, black, brown, Latinx, Arabic, Jewish, disabled – often just about any race you can think of. Early on they made bonds with kids of many different backgrounds. They learned that what makes a person is who they are not what they look like.

Religion. Religion is becoming less and less of a factor in the lives of younger voters. Especially since the current formal religions are often used to justify policies that cause poverty and inequality etc.

They are coming of age and having a hard time reconciling America’s supposed opportunity for all and what the reality is. In recent years especially it is very obvious which party is at least trying to make the American Dream a possibility for all and which party is hide bound racist.

These youngsters have spent a good portion of their lives online and many have come to understand when someone is trying to hustle them and is lying to them.

As you look at the age breakdown of voters it is easy to see that the older voters that skew Republican will be dying off soon. The up and coming generations are increasingly liberal. They are asking questions and find only one side is listening.

They seem to reflect the words of Robert Kennedy:

Some men see things as they are, and ask why. I dream of things that never were, and ask why not.

Thoughts On The Midterm Election

The following YouTube is 45 minutes long, but is extremely informative about the Iowa press. They also have a great segment on Medicare Advantage (which is not Medicare!!!), which is followed with a segment on how advertising was used by Reynolds during the campaign. This video was posted just before the election.

As I write this many contests nationally are still up in the air. Despite the constant bombardment from the media that this would be almost a Republican Revolution that did not transpire. Thank goodness most people were thinking rather than just being guided by the media and their constant harping on how badly the Democrats were doing.

While much of the country took a slight lean Democratic, Iowa and Florida both took a hard turn to the right. That seems pretty strange since Iowa and Florida have two of the oldest average populations in the country. Somehow, Rick Scott and Ron Johnson’s plans to do huge damage to the Social Security and Medicare systems must have somehow not been shared in these states.

You would think that the two states that will probably be hurt the worst by changes in Social Security and Medicare would be a little skittish about voting for the Party that wants these programs drastically changed for the worse. But maybe the old folks in Iowa and Florida are more concerned about owning the Libs than moving in with the kids.

Iowa’s turn right is most interesting. Kim Reynolds now will have near dictatorial power in this state. She and her predecessor, King Terry, have done quite a number on working Iowans, disabled Iowans, unions, schools, school teachers and transgendered teens.

Look for her to finish dismantling Iowa’s once highly thought of public school system as she blurs the line between church and state by sending public school money to religious private schools. And of course there is abortion – with nothing to stop her expect one of the most extreme abortion policies in the country.

What Reynolds has in mind is hard to tell. She has pretty much turned Iowa into an oligarch’s playground. But she can still cut taxes for the rich again and again, no doubt we can expect yet more restrictions on unions and – who knows – maybe a Christian chapel in the governor’s office.

Looks like the extremist Republicans in this state have come up with a winning formula in Iowa. More voting restrictions, running young people out of the state and kneeling at the throne of Donald Trump. Trump magic only seemed to work in Iowa which should give some indication of how out of step with America Iowa has become.

And of course one of the major weapons in the Reynolds arsenal is a very compliant – one might say subservient – press. There are very few non-right leaning outlets in this state and that includes the internet. Most of what we get from Iowa’s press corp on Republicans is a cheering section.

As Reynolds and Branstad dismantled the unions in Iowa, steered the medicaid money away from the patients to wealthy corporations and is now working on dismantling our school system Iowa’s press has said little in opposition. We saw during the covid pandemic that Reynolds bad policies were met with almost no questions from Iowa’s press. Of course, had they asked questions they would lose access.

The hard turn to the right was not just in the governor’s race, all of Iowa’s congressional races went for the extreme right wing candidate. As Miller-Meeks and Hinson played games during their first terms that was not enough for Iowa voters to toss them out for much better candidates.

It is still possible that Democrats will hold the US House. If they don’t and the extremist Republicans are in charge I think we can expect these two and Zach Nunn to play lots of games that will garner headlines but produce almost nothing in output.

When I was brought up in Iowa it was a place that we spoke of proudly. It was a state where young women had opportunities in sports in school and then later on opportunities in business. We were a leader in society. Now Iowa seems to have moved from a leadership role to wanting to nestle between Alabama and Mississippi policy wise.

Hang on for a truly bumpy ride for the average citizen after Christmas. It sounds like Iowa is about to take a huge jump to be among the most right wing of states. Iowa Nice? Not no more!

Kim Reynolds’ Punch Down Politics No Bar To Reelection

From an article by Dave Leshtz published in The Nation. Dave is editor of The Prairie Progressive, Iowa’s oldest progressive newslettter.

What, Her Worry? Iowa’s Kim Reynolds Is Running a Dishonest and Nasty Campaign

Iowa City—The painting American Gothic, by Grant Wood, depicts a stern and stoic white couple, their lips pinched, wearing a prim apron and sturdy overalls as they stand in front of a frame house in Eldon, Iowa. The painting has been parodied hundreds of times—including several in Mad magazine featuring Alfred E. Neuman in overalls.

Today, in the politics of Iowa, it’s hard not to see Republican Governor Kim Reynolds standing in for the frowning woman in the apron. Reynolds has eschewed all claim to the image of “Iowa nice,” preferring to embody the mean and stingy side of the American pioneer spirit that Wood’s painting sought to capture.

Earlier this year, Reynolds engineered a cut in unemployment benefits from 26 weeks to 16 weeks. “The safety net has become a hammock,” she said, and saw to it that unemployed workers would be forced to take any available job, even one well below their previous pay grade.

America Doesn’t Yet Exist

“There is nowhere in this country that I would want to fly over. I’m interested in all Americans.” – Bono

Bono has always been a fan of the idea of America. And today for me, a moment of contemplation is called for, so it seemed like a good day to share Bono’s thoughts on America. I found his words quite beautiful, true and hopeful.

Maybe yesterday there was no national “red wave” which is good, but we are definitely having one here in Iowa which is very, very bad. It is so disappointing and frankly unfathomable that so many people in our state could be persuaded to vote for the worst candidates for office ever instead of the honest, decent, caring people on the Democratic side. I know what it is. It’s the money and it’s the propaganda and it’s the Trump cult. It’s still  hard to fathom even when you know.

Is this hell?  No, it’s Iowa. Fly-over country. Please come and see us, Bono. Maybe you can help.

Midterm Data Show Dems Doing Well If Young People Keep Voting

Watch this. It’s not just happy talk. Simon Rosenberg discusses data you don’t hear much about that show Democrats in a good position. Do not believe the red wave narrative Republicans helped create to bamboozle the gullible media. But we must make it happen.

Save democracy. Go vote. Then go help others vote.

Media In The Midterms

Here is an example from the 2016 election of how skewed corporate news can be

Just a quick observation – the day of the media as an objective observer during the midterms are long gone. Most every media outlet is a subsidiary of some major corporation. As if we needed to be reminded, major corporations do have a stake in the election and using their media subsidiaries is part of a strategy.

Outlets like Fox and Sinclair are pretty out front about being right wing influencers. They push the radical right agenda quite blatantly and frequently. Have you ever thought about a real non-issue like Critical Race Theory suddenly became a hot button issue across the country even though it is taught nowhere?

Have you wondered why inflation suddenly appeared from almost nowhere to supplant a true organic issue like the overturning of Roe v. Wade? I am not saying inflation is not an issue. It most certainly is, but the framing on this issue is so decidedly one sided that it is almost comical? Why is workers’ pay given more blame for inflation rather than the major culprit, businesses price gouging?

Why do we hear little about rural hospitals closing? Why do we hear little about the horrors that ending abortion has caused? Thanks to major media involvement we saw what was once a country that believed in science refuse vaccines as more than a million died horrible and possible preventable deaths?

A country that conquered polio, measles, small pox and many other once dreaded diseases refused proven vaccinations and now looks as if they are on the verge of rejecting all vaccinations. All because of a media with an agenda has decided to use disinformation and the power of their presence to do so.

So as we come to the final days of what is the most important election in Americans history, the media is putting its substantial thumb on the scales. One of the things that media can influence is the turnout. Therefore you may have noticed that in the past week or so media outlets are spewing a continuous stream of supposed polls that show Republicans have substantial lead going into Election Day.

We hear this interpretation especially on right wing media outlets, but we also hear it on “neutral” outlets such as NPR. Why would all these never-heard-of-before polls are coming out in the right’s favor suddenly is two fold.

First, all these polls with Republicans winning are thrown into the mix by aggregators such as 538.com. These polls then influence the aggregate of polls which make it look like Republicans are winning. Secondly, as reports (true or not) come out the one side is losing, their supporters get discouraged and stay home.

This is one of the quiet ways that the media uses its influence to get the results they want. “Oh they are just reporting polls” is a common thought. But whose polls? What demographics? What were the questions?

As I mentioned, even NPR falls into the trap of reporting “polls” without explanation. When NPR gives credulity to this way of undermining turnout, it has a more powerful punch.

And just to add a punch to the gut, with Elon Musk taking over Twitter that is another media outlet controlled by the right. Along with Facebook they are big influencer that few ever think of when thinking of the media.

To be honest, this year no-one really knows which way the real vote will go. If you are at all hesitant, don’t hold back. Be sure to get out there and vote!

Who To Endorse?

Should be no surprise. We side with the Democrats!

Most who read this blog will not be at all surprised when I say that we endorse Democrats from Congress to the courthouse this year. While the Republican Party has almost completely morphed into an extreme right wing, authoritarian party with a cult of personality that glorifies a man who is probably the biggest single law-breaker in American history. Only a few real Republicans have had the audacity stand up to Trump and they have been (in what is common in a cult of personality) purged.

The current extreme right Republican Party has few stands on issues. What their leader says is what they do. That is their stand. Their policies are essentially to cut taxes for the rich. That is their answer to everything. The other policy is to end any common good in our society.

The radical right has let it be known that such common goods as Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid are on the chopping block. Things like negotiating drug prices, building roads and extending internet connections to rural areas are opposed by the right. Across the nation our public school system is under assault and few are attacking the public school system like the radical right Republicans in Iowa.

Democrats on the other hand are still in the business of building a strong, functioning civilization – the kind of society that helps all citizens and is robust in the time of crisis. Republicans did all they could to destroy our trust in science during the pandemic, and they did all they could to destroy our trust in government at the same time.

Since Biden has been president he has spent most of his time fixing what Trump broke, while Trump has Benn spending time continuing to break our society. In short Democrats are the builders and the fixers that create the environment for us to survive and thrive. Current radical right Republicans are destroyers who have nothing to replace what they destroyed.

Given that as background, it should come as little surprise that we endorse Mike Franken for US Senator, Deidre DeJear for governor, and Democrats Ryan Melton, Cindy Axne, Christina Bohannan and Liz Mathis for US Representatives.

In the past couple of decades Chuck Grassley has become a caricature of the party hack who puts his party first in every case. Admiral Franken rose through the ranks of the military because he put country first. Franken has shown the kind of astute thinking that the country needs. Issues change, the ability to make good decisions is a rare commodity. Franken is that person. Grassley has demonstrated for decades that he is not.

In the Governor’s race all I have to say is that when Iowa needed Reynolds to lead during the pandemic, she was hugely AWOL taking her marching orders from businesses to the detriment of Iowans. She has manipulated the state budget. Her current project is to dismantle Iowa’s once vaunted education system which she will no doubt auction off to the highest bidder to cover future budget chicanery.

Deidre DeJear has shown that she will rebuild Iowa’s school system. She will also bring dignity and work for better pay for Iowa’s long exploited workforce. DeJear will build, Reynolds will continue to destroy.

Iowa’s Republican delegation to the US House has been pathetic. They vote lockstep with leadership. Leadership’s only priority is to make President Biden look bad. What they have done instead is make their party look foolish. They then look even more foolish when they go back to the district and lie to constituents pretending that they voted for things that are bring good jobs and investment into the district.

Miller-Meeks and Hinson have even added a little twist by fakily proposing legislation that poorly mimics what the Democrats passed and then claiming they were for the popular legislation. They are using a couple of the most powerful positions in the country just to play games.

On the other hand, Democratic candidates like Christina Bohannan and Liz Mathis will do actual work in congress. They are builders. Expect them to propose and support legislation that will build our country and strengthen us.

Cindy Axne has been a real hard worker in congress, scoring many victories for her district. Expect more of the same.

Ryan Melton in Iowa’s 4th district has been a breath of fresh air with his views on issues. He would be a real great addition to Iowa’s congressional delegation.

At the state level, we have seen what the Republican trifecta has done to Iowa’s infrastructure and stature. Expect it to only get worse. We will soon be scrapping with Mississippi and Alabama for those bottom spots in whatever listing of states that comes along. Electing Democrats to lead the Iowa statehouse would change our trajectory.
