Factory Farm Moratorium Bill In Iowa Legislature

Urgent action alert from CCI:

For the first time ever, we have a factory farm moratorium bill in the statehouse!

But, Senator Ken Rozenboom (R, Mahaska) is refusing to bring this bill (SF 2008) up for debate in sub-committee. He is single-handedly blocking this crucial legislation from moving forward.

With the end of the first funnel quickly approaching on Friday, Rozenboom only has one week remaining to hold this meeting.

TAKE ACTION! Tell Senator Rozenboom to schedule a meeting on the moratorium bill!

What is Rozenboom afraid of? Why won’t he at least allow a debate on the moratorium bill introduced by Senator Johnson?

Iowans are bracing for yet another massive factory farm expansion. Yet, Iowa can’t even keep up with the 10,000+ factory farms already here. With Iowa’s lax oversight and minimal protections from factory farm pollution, it’s no wonder we now have 750 impaired waterbodies in Iowa.

Our water crisis is real — but in a recent meeting with CCI Action members, Rozenboom blamed water pollution on seagulls.

Really?

Iowans know that if we’re serious about cleaning up our water, we need a moratorium on new and expanding factory farms. We’re sick and tired of factory farms degrading our communities and having no voice in the process.

Spend three minutes to take action with this simple step:

Email Senator Rozenboom and tell him to schedule a sub-committee on the factory farm moratorium bill. He needs to listen to us, not the factory farm industry!

For a food and farm system that works for farmers, workers, eaters and the environment,

DeJear Will Strengthen Iowa Environment For Small Businesses

Deidre DeJear is running for Secretary of State. She is all about helping small businesses in Iowa. She will protect Iowa’s voting rights instead of  creating burdensome voter regulations intended to keep Iowans from having a voice.

Visit her campaign website DejearForIowa.com/.   Follow her on Facebook and Twitter.

From her campaign website:

“In their last session, our state legislature decided to pass the controversial voter ID law, which unfortunately erects more obstacles beyond just IDs for Iowans to cast their ballots. In every campaign she has worked for, Deidre has a track record of increasing turnout and registering new voters.

As Secretary of State, Deidre will ensure our voter process is secure, accessible and fair for ALL Iowans – meaning rural and urban, young and young-at-heart, those with disabilities, people with money and people without. Deidre believes that ALL Iowans need to have a voice at the ballot box.

Deidre understands that Iowa needs strong leaders and voters supporting them to find solutions for our state.”

Iowans Meet To Learn How To Strengthen Iowa’s Animal Welfare Laws

The Coralville Public Library room was standing room only as local citizens braved a fresh snowfall and cold temps to learn what can be done to help Iowa’s puppy mill dogs and more.

Iowa ranks 49th in animal welfare laws. Why are we last?  One reason is Big Ag hasn’t allowed protections for cats and dogs because they are afraid it will mean eventually they will have to be nicer  to livestock.  Seriously.  They have long taken refuge in the mythical “slippery slope” argument as to why they have blocked protections for companion animals.  But we may be getting past this problem.

A bill was introduced in the senate judiciary committee by two Republicans from Des Moines.  It made it past committee and identical bills can now be considered by the full house (HS B608) and senate (SF2181).  You may leave a comment about the bill at the links.

A bill for an act prohibiting the mistreatment of animals other than livestock and wild animals, providing for the rescue of animals by local law enforcement agencies, providing for criminal offenses and court orders, and including penalties.

Note the phrase “other than livestock.”  So Big Ag can just chill.

Please contact your state representatives and senators.  Tell them you support passage of HS B608 / SF2181 that will strengthen animal cruelty laws. These legislators hear from lobbyists, puppy mill owners and breeders.  They need to hear from us.  Also, sign up with Iowa Voters for Companion Animals.  They are working hard to improve the horrible conditions for puppy mill dogs and more.

The event was sponsored by the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center. Local TV station KCRG-TV 9 was there. Here is Samantha Myers’ report.

See KCRG video report here.

CORALVILLE, Iowa (KCRG-TV9) – Animal lovers and activists are preparing for a big day at the statehouse.

They had a meeting at the Coralville Public Library this afternoon called Understanding Iowa’s Animal Welfare Laws.   Panelists discussed current laws and what they want to change in the laws.

They say they are sick of what keeps happening to animals in the state.

One woman who showed up at the event says she was moved to get involved after the recent animal case in Vinton.

Authorities rescued hundreds of animals from a home in Vinton. A court later ruled all but 14 were neglected.

“I’ve seen it happen and I just want to be a part of the change part now.” Brooke Pettengill said.

Members of the lobbyist group Iowa Voters for Companion Animals spoke at the meeting urging the attendees to call their lawmakers.

“We really want our companion animals in Iowa to be adequately protected so the laws and the regulations to reflect the ideals of Iowa citizens,” Haley Anderson said.

The group supports a new bill that would adjust some breeder licensing fees and also change wording in state inspections. They are planning a lobby day at the state capitol February 20.

Action Alert From OneIowa

Image (1) one-iowa.jpg for post 25854

I wanted to make sure you saw this call to action. Please join us in the fight against religious exemptions to defend LGBTQ Iowans and many others from discrimination.

A Senate subcommittee will discuss this religious exemption bill (SSB 3171) in a public meeting on Monday, February 12 at 1:30 p.m. in Room 116 at the Iowa State Capitol. In addition to calling the Senate switchboard, please contact the senators who will sit on this subcommittee directly and tell them to vote NO on SSB 3171:

•Sen. Dennis Guth: 641-430-0424 | dennis.guth@legis.iowa.gov

•Sen. Julian Garrett: 515-971-0883 | julian.garrett@legis.iowa.gov

•Sen. Rob Hogg: 319-247-0223 | rob.hogg@legis.iowa.gov

—Daniel

A Senate bill that would weaken the Iowa Civil Rights Act and make LGBTQ Iowans vulnerable has been assigned to a subcommittee. SSB 3171 (formerly SF 2154) would broadly allow religious exemptions to Iowa laws, including the Iowa Civil Rights Act.

Call the Iowa Senate switchboard at 515-281-3371 and urge these members of the subcommittee to vote NO on SSB 3171:

• Sen. Rob Hogg

• Sen. Dennis Guth

• Sen. Julian Garrett

The language of this bill is vague, which makes it extremely dangerous. For example, a pharmacist could refuse to fill a transgender person’s prescription for hormones, claiming his religion doesn’t allow him to serve transgender people. A pediatrician could refuse to provide medical care for the child of a same-sex couple because she doesn’t believe in same-sex marriage.

The consequences of this bill extend outside the LGBTQ community as well. A man abusing his spouse and children could claim domestic violent laws don’t apply to him because of his religion.

These are only a few examples of the harm this bill could inflict if it becomes law. Religious freedom is one of our nation’s fundamental values and is already protected by the first amendment. The rule of law is also important, and we cannot allow people to pick and choose which laws they’re going to follow.

Urge the Senate subcommittee to oppose broad religious exemptions to Iowa laws by calling 515-281-3371 now.

We have also prepared a form letter that will allow you to quickly and easily ask your state senator to oppose this bill.

Click here to write your state senator now and ask them to reject SSB 3171.

Our state has a proud legacy of equality that has protected LGBTQ Iowans for years. We were the third state to embrace marriage equality, defying many people’s expectations. We also have anti-discrimination protections for LGBTQ Iowans through the Iowa Civil Rights Act. Iowa is one of less than half of all states that have these crucial protections on the books.

We are incredibly proud of the Iowa Civil Rights Act, and we must fight to defend it.

Call 515-281-3371 now and tell subcommittee members to vote NO on SSB 3171.

Thank you for fighting for LGBTQ Iowans.

Sincerely,

Daniel Hoffman-Zinnel

One Iowa Action Executive Director

Comment –

Please call. This twisting of so called religious rights will immediately damage some of our fellow citizens.

Sunday Funday: Detective Grassley Edition

Image (2) Grassley-do-your-job-300x225.jpg for post 34219

Today our scene opens to a house ablaze, engulfed in fire. Near the structure stands a man with an empty gasoline can in one hand and a pack of wooden matches in the other. The man looks a bit of an odd duck. While he is obviously older, his hair is not gray. Instead it is an odd orange color that would stick out in any crowd.

Enter Chuck Grassley, Ace Detective. Grassley has arrived on the scene because there is suspicion that this fire was not an accident. Nope there is strong suspicion that it is arson. Grassley says good evening to the orange haired man and ascertains that the man has recently purchased the property.

Detective Grassley tells the man to be careful. Having gasoline and matches that near a fire could be dangerous, Grassley explains to him. And then Grassley moves on.

The target of his investigation lives across the street. She is the person who called the fire in to the Department. “How,” Grassley ponders, “could she have known about the fire so quickly? Very suspicious!” Grassley heads for her door.

Make up your own scenario of how Chuck Grassley would handle another job if he wasn’t Chuck Grassley, Ace Senate Investigator.

Wow – I can’t keep up and I need a bigger scorecard to identify the players.

We Need One Health Care System In The US!

This twitter video highlights in 3 minutes much of what is wrong with the American health care system. Or rather the system against health care for Americans.

It is long past time for America to align into a national health care system instead of each insurance company having their own system, Medicare having a system, Medicaid having a system, each state having some of their own rules, the Veteran’s Administration having its own system, and of course people who are not in any system that are often left to just die.

Truman on health care

Seems that the line of sight (to paraphrase from the video) to a simpler, logical health care system that actually worked is is clouded and hidden by the green of money and the lure of power over others.

Thank you Mr. Ady Barkin for this courageous video!

Here is another video from this courageous American!

Remember Iowans! Health care is a core issue in this year’s elections. At the state level we have Republicans who continue to turn Medicaid into a profit center for their donors instead of the lifeline for the poor and disabled that it is supposed to be. How anyone could vote for a politician who has turned Medicaid into a profit center for their donors is beyond me.

Also, don’t forget that Republicans are doing all they can at a national level to dismantle the ACA. While the ACA is not where this country needs to be, it is certainly a step in the right direction. Voting for any Republican at a national level is a vote to go back to some really dark days in health care in this country.

Obscure Court Ruling Sends Ominous Warning Message

ipers

While our news media focuses on the ongoing disasters such as the Russian Connection to the White House, the plunging stock market and the fate of those under DACA, some really important news is going under reported.

One such story cropped up on MSN from Business Insider last Thursday morning. This story has to do with pensions and retirement and the shortfalls occurring especially among government entities.

This story takes place in Cranston, Rhode Island. Cranston is a city of about 80,000 nestled with many other towns and cities in the Providence, RI metropolitan area around Narragansett Bay.

Here is the crux of the story:

“Ever since the mid-1990s, police officers and fire fighters in the town of Cranston, Rhode Island had been promised state pension benefits upon retirement.

But, facing critical budget shortfalls over the last several years that the Rhode Island government called “fiscal peril,” the state legislature voted to unilaterally reduce public employees’ pension benefits.

Even more, these cuts were retroactive, i.e. they didn’t just apply to new employees.

The changes were applied across the board; workers who had spent their entire careers being promised certain retirement benefits ended up having their pensions cut as well. “

Employee unions sued for full compensation. The state opposed and they went to court. The ruling that came down from the First District Court of Appeals was – in my opinion – stunning:

“Last week the First Circuit Court issued a final ruling and sided with the state of Rhode Island: the government has no obligation to honor its promises.”

What? That is a decision that will have ramifications across the country. They just said that a contract between a governmental agency and its employees doesn’t hold.

There are many chilling scenarios that can be envisioned from this ruling. The author chose to bring up one huge scenario. That is Social Security:

“This one certainly does. Because Social Security is in even WORSE condition that the State of Rhode Island’s perilous pension system.

We talk about this a lot in our regular conversations.

According to the Board of Trustees for Social Security (which includes the US Treasury Secretary, the US Secretary for Health & Human Services, and the US Secretary of Labor), the Social Security trust funds “become depleted and unable to pay scheduled benefits in full on a timely basis in 2034.”

Once again– that’s the Treasury Secretary of the United States saying that Social Security will run out of money in 16 years.”

The author then goes into some strategies an individual may want to use to lessen the blow of a downsized Social Security. My thoughts went in several different directions.

My first thought was – Will this be the final ruling on this issue? At the First District Court of Appeals? I certainly hope not.

Second and the obvious take from a story like this is that legislators, county supervisors and city councilors who have been short-changing these retirement accounts for decades just got a “Get Out of Jail Free” card. No more having to pretend to fund employee retirements while cutting taxes for their rich donors.

My third thought is that Republicans now will never do anything to make Social Security work. They have a “Get Out of Jail Free” card. For many Social Security is their only retirement income and for most Social Security is at least a major component of retirement income. Not sure what people will do if a congress decides to just drastically cut Social Security. If you vote for Republicans you had better realize that cutting government pensions will probably be high on their list, even though they don’t mention it in any speech.

Finally – with a president who has a business strategy of breaking contracts and refusing to pay bills, who can really be surprised that a court would look at contracts as just so much paper?

I certainly hope this is just the first chapter of this story. If this country stands for anything then the case will go higher and be reversed. But with our governments now-towing to the rich and well connected for the past four decades a person has to wonder if the system is so corrupted that this ruling will stand.

The Iowa legislature continually makes noises about changing IPERS. In light of this ruling let us hope they back way off on doing so.

Why Is Iowa Ranked 49th In Animal Welfare?

Click on the image for more info.

“Puppy mills are factory farms for dogs. SF421 would strengthen Iowa Code 717.B, which covers domestic animals. Iowa ranks 49th in animal welfare because the factory farm industry lobbies against all animal protection bills. It’s an election year and Republicans are afraid of a “blue wave,” let’s get ‘er done.” – Joan Olive
