Tuition Rising – Is Anyone Surprised?

Basic RGB

Brandon Borkovec over at Iowa Policy Project does a great analysis of the disappearing state support for our public institutions of higher education here in Iowa as the Board of Regents once again announced a rise in tuitions.

Today’s announcement of plans to raise tuition at Iowa universities should not surprise anyone. When the Legislature cuts back, the regents need to fill in the gaps. And that creates new gaps, in family budgets immediately, and beyond, with — student debt.

The full picture is considerably more stark. Adjusting for inflation, state funding for public universities has declined since fiscal year 2001, by 40 percent at the University of Iowa, 42 percent at Iowa State University, and 28 percent at the University of Northern Iowa.

And these calculations do not include the recent current-year budget cuts for FY2018 ordered by the Legislature and signed by the Governor that took a disproportionate share from the regent institutions — $11 million or about one-third of the total.

To fill the financial needs of the institutions, the regents have turned to increasing the annual tuition paid by students. Between fiscal year 2001 and 2016, tuition at the regent universities has increased between 72 percent and 75 percent.

In fact, there has been a shift in the primary source of funding, from state appropriations to tuition and fees. In fiscal year 2001 the University of Iowa received 63 percent of its budget from the state. In fiscal year 2016 it had dropped to 34 percent. For the other universities the drop was: 68 percent to 35 percent at ISU, and 70 percent to 56 percent at UNI.

Many students will walk out of Iowa universities with a debt load equal to a small home. With the rules around student debt enacted by Republican congresses such debt is acquired at usury rates and even death does not relieve a person from paying back student debt. Former students will most likely be in debt well into their adulthood.

Carrying this substantial debt will certainly enter into many of the decisions they make as they enter into the workforce and their major consumer years. Purchasing housing may be delayed, auto purchases may be downgraded, families delayed and downsized. These are consequences that are hard to calculate but very real.

There may also be a cost to our society as a whole as many potential students may simply not attend college or defer attending college or take a different route in order to lessen their long term financial burden. This at a time when America’s economic rivals equip their young citizens with the skills they need for the future.

Another aspect of the dwindling support for higher education is that one of the major reasons behind the cutback in support is so that the state can dramatically cut taxes for industries which need a supply of well educated young people to keep them competitive. Surely seems to be at cross purposes.

As the legislature cuts and cuts revenue they are substantially cutting into the qualities of life that once made Iowa the kind of place where people wanted to settle down and raise a family.

Sunday Funday: “Rule Of Law” Edition

repubs didn't cut golf trips

Heard on the John Fugelsang Show Friday (paraphrase) – “Teapot Dome would only be an small appetizer for this administration.”

It was funny and ironic to see Kim Reynolds’ main opponent hoisted on the Republican petard of “rule of law.” Reynolds and the insider Republicans were able to repel a challenge from inside the party by using a strict reading of a law with absolutely no leeway. Ron Corbett was treated almost as a poor drug user with less than an ounce of weed who had the book thrown at him.

From Bill Dix to Rod Blum on up to the White House it sure looks like “rule of law” only applies to non-Republicans. Let’s also throw ethics on the burn pile for Republicans. Dear Leader is the Grand Poobah of ethics violations, but with folks like Pruitt, Ben Carson, Betsy DeVos, Michael Flynn ad infinitum this is and lawless and ethics-less group.

But they do make it easier to ask questions:

  1. Another Fox News(?) talker took a sudden “planned vacation” this week. Which one?
  1. Looks like Republican campaigns will be focusing on what 2 women this fall?
  1. Dear Leader is outright attacking what American business?
  1. Stocks took a roller coaster ride this week as a potential trade war with what country heated up?
  1. Teachers in what state went on strike demanding decent supplies and learning environments for their students?
  1. Teachers in what state went on strike when major changes in their pension were passed in a sewer bill?
  1. 2018 is the 50th anniversary of many things, including what strategy employed by Richard Nixon in his attempt to win the White House?
  1. In Iowa, a bill banning “sanctuary cities” passed the legislature. This bill is targeted at what two Iowa cities according to a fund raising letter from Kim Reynolds?
  1. EPA head Scott Pruitt got a sweetheart deal on a condo in DC from a couple who work as what in Washington?
  1. Dear Leader ordered what to the border with Mexico?
  1. What monthly measurement of the health of the economy slowed greatly in March numbers out Friday showed?
  1. What Texas congressman who has been embroiled in a sex scandal resigned suddenly Friday afternoon effective immediately?
  1. Dear Leader denied knowing of any payments to who when asked by a reporter Thursday?
  1. Meanwhile, what group of supporters scheduled a meeting with Dear Leader for June to discuss his involvement in sex scandals?
  1. The campus of what major tech company was under attack by what appeared to be an upset customer?
  1. The women’s final four featured 2 overtime games and a final won with a buzzer beater. Who won the tourney?
  1. Democrat Rebecca Dallet substantially won the election for a Supreme Court seat in what state?
  1. Despite leading polls for this fall’s election in Brazil, what former president lost an appeal on his corruption conviction and will serve time in prison?
  1. In a similar event what country’s former president was sentenced to 24 years in prison for corruption Friday?
  1. “This is nuts” declared Sen. Ben Sasse from what state about Dear Leader’s tariff war with China?

Ironically ironic: Dear Leader declared April National Sexual Assault Awareness month. Yes really

Trump Shoots At China, Hits Iowa Squarely

Just a short note in case you hadn’t heard. There has been some blowback from our bully president’s unilateral move to impose tariffs on Chinese products. The Chinese stood up to the bully. Not sure our bully was expecting that to happen.

Our bully took a swing at China and scored a blow. China swung back and scored a direct hit in the “midwestum econimum.” Specifically China hit the US right in the Iowa by banning the very products that undergird most of Iowa’s economy.

Now we come up on spring planting time and Iowa’s major customer is telling us that they will hike the price if we want to sell our products there. Corn, soybeans, pork and beef.

Much like the sanctions that we so often put on countries that don’t obey our orders these tariffs that China is threatening in retaliation will not hurt Mr. Trump, his family or employees. These tariffs will hurt everyday citizens, especially famers and small business people many of whom put their trust in Mr. Trump by giving him their votes in November 2016.

A somewhat ironic side note to this on going drama is that the ambassador to China is none other than Iowa’s former governor, Terry Branstad. Seems Branstad will have a ringside seat to watch the trade deals he worked so hard for go up in a puff of bullying.

In what used to be considered more normal times things like trade wars and impositions of tariffs were approached with extreme caution as something to be avoided or entered into skillfully. Those who used to do such negotiations are long gone as the administration ran out those with expertise and replaced them with sycophants  – or not at all.

Now China could have imposed  tariffs on some of our manufactured goods, but we don’t make a whole lot here anymore. Corporate policy has shifted much of their manufacturing overseas especially to China. So when China decided to retaliate, raw materials and ag products were about all they could target.

Corporate policy has no loyalty to any country, only to the lowest dollar cost, so they have been more than happy to move their manufacturing.

My suspicion is that the administration – mostly the president – will do some grand standing and make some bullying type statements, but in reality he has pretty well painted this country into a corner. In the end he will once again retreat and declare a victory. His party will no doubt hoot about winning, but reality will tell another tale.

And the corporate media will play the retreat as a victory, but I think Iowa farmers and farmers in many other states will realize that this administration is playing a game with their lives where they can lose big at any second.

April Fool’s Day For America

by Ralph Scharnau

Donald Trump has managed to make a mockery of the presidency. His lack of holding any federal governmental elective or appointive office surely contributed to the chaos evident in his administration.

He often approaches governing as a performance spectacle. On public policy issues, Trump displays an alarming amount of ignorance. He has little interest in the nuances of decision-making. He prefers briefings and pronouncements to analyses and readings.
Some journalists state that Trump likes to get news by listening to oral reports and watching “Fox and Friends” on television. They note that he lacks curiosity, seems bored by analysis and reads very little.

Addicted to the realm of twitterdom, Trump has released a bewildering array of demeaning, contradictory and incoherent tweets. In his tweets and in person, Trump often comes across as rambling, fiery, boastful, and jocular. His critics, especially women, are targeted for slurs and insults, dismissed and denigrated.

White House bureaucracy has gone through a massive exodus of experienced personnel and internal resistance.

Beyond Washington, foolishness abounds at the state level too. In mid-December of last year, Tennessee banned citizens from carrying hand held signs into the state legislature. State officials argued that the signs “represent a serious safety hazard.” But they had no reservations about allowing people to bring their guns into the statehouse.

Commentary on the economy is a daily occurrence. The media, politicians, and corporations judge the nation’s economic health by Wall Street’s index of stock prices. Since nearly all stock is owned by the richest 10% of the populace, these figures only reveal how the wealthy fare. The general measurement of the ups, downs, and sluggishness of stock prices are reported as the Dow Jones Industrial Average. We need a “Doug Jones Average” that measures pay and benefits for the vast majority of American workers. Despite record high stock prices, working and middle class folks struggle to achieve decent wages and living standards.

When it comes to immigration, Trump prefers those from northern and western Europe. He wants more Norwegians rather than those from Haiti and African “shit hole” countries. His mid-January vulgar remarks evoked a firestorm of criticism among Democrats and Republicans. Haitian President Jovenel Moise denounced Trump’s words as racist.

\This was not the first time that Trump used racist language. Before becoming president, he promoted “birtherism,” a debunked conspiracy theory that President Obama was an illegal president because he was born in Kenya. Trump has referred to Mexican immigrants as rapists and criminals, called for a ban on Muslims, and was slow to disavow the support of former Ku Klux Klan leader David Duke Trump has condemned African-American athletes protesting police violence by kneeling during the national anthem. Representative Cedric Richmond, (D-La), chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, called Trump’s comments “racially insensitive and ignorant,” reinforcing the view that the president’s slogan, ‘Make America Great Again’ is really code for ‘Make America White Again.’”

Despite considerable evidence to the contrary, Trump refers to himself as a “very stable genius.” He worships money, wants unquestioning loyalty, and craves public adulation. He often acts with authoritarian impulsiveness, creating turmoil among his staff, advisors, legal team, and cabinet officials. He is undisciplined, unprincipled, and unconcerned about precedent or propriety.

On the vital issues of the day, Trump stands exposed as ill-informed at best and incompetent at worst. If only we had an experienced, thoughtful, reflective, and knowledgeable chief executive.

Fight Sinclair Broadcasting In Iowa – Call Your Local Car Dealerships!

Action alert by DU –

democraticunderground.com/

“I’ve worked in various forms of broadcast media. Trust me you want to hit Sinclair stations? Go after one major business category on the local level. Car dealerships. They spend the vast majority, sometimes upward of 30 to 40% of ad sales for TV and radio stations.

Car dealerships are VERY sensitive to brand name, protecting reputations, etc. You start a group calling, writing, social media posting about local dealerships supporting the sensational and fascist tactics of Sinclair stations.

Get to the GM and the Sales Managers. Heck go see them in person. They will take note and listen.”

Iowans Can Help Save The Monarch Butterflies

Urgent action alert from Environment Iowa

The monarch butterfly population has collapsed to the point at which all monarchs can fit onto just a few football fields.

There are 16 million fewer monarchs than there were this time last year, and by some estimates, the monarch population is just a third of what it was 25 years ago.1

This beautiful creature and essential pollinator has been pushed to the brink of extinction. It isn’t too late to save them, but we need to act quickly. Chip in today to stand with monarch butterflies.

The monarch is critical to our environment, pollinating crops and feeding birds and other insects. That’s why we’re asking the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service to protect monarchs under the Endangered Species Act before it’s too late.

From damage caused by climate change to widespread use of herbicides that have killed milkweed, the monarch’s main source of food, we know that human activity is responsible for much of the monarch die off. And it’s our responsibility to step up and protect them.

Donate today to protect monarchs and our environment.

Monarch butterflies migrate north from Mexico every spring, and each year, the World Wildlife Fund measures the population before it starts its trek.

This year, the area the population occupied was 15 percent smaller than that of last year, down to just a few hectares. The butterfly species has suffered for years due to deforestation, including illegal avocado plantations in butterfly preserves.2

Of course we’re still working to tackle climate change, defend public lands and save the bees –– but we need to protect the monarch butterfly as well. We’re pushing to have the monarch declared an endangered species so we can do more to protect this valuable creature. Will you donate today to help save the monarch butterfly, and support other vital environmental campaigns?

Yes, I will.

Thank you for your support,

David Rossini

Morning Coffee, Climate Change And The 2018 Midterms

U.S. Army Mermite Can

I first drank coffee in the Army… on top of a hill… during the dead of winter… from a mermite can.

Steam rising from the lid proved irresistible when ambient temperatures were below zero and we had just slept on the ground. What else were we going to do but drink coffee? It was there.

We each have a personal history of drinking coffee. I asked one of the greenhouse seeding crews if they remembered their first cup. Some had specific memories, others did not. For me, it was the windy hill in Germany back in 1976.

Coffee was first discovered in Ethiopia in the 11th Century and spread throughout the temperate zones of the planet. It is currently being grown in more than 60 countries. Brazil, Vietnam, Columbia, Indonesia and Ethiopia are the largest coffee producers by annual export weight. Coffee has become ubiquitous as any foodstuff can be.

Making Coffee

The sources of our coffee are under pressure because of climate change. Yields are declining in part because a warmer atmosphere holds more water vapor, creating unseasonable and extreme weather events. Likewise, warmer temperatures expanded the range of the coffee berry borer. Coffee rust is a detrimental fungus increasing its range as the planet warms and winters no longer kill it off in mountainous regions where coffee grows. The impact of global warming caused climate change is not trivial.

We would like to drink a cup of Joe without worry. When we go to the warehouse club there is a long, abundant aisle of coffee produced all over the world. A cup of coffee continues to be affordable at restaurants. It hardly seems like a problem. It isn’t… at least not now.

The science of global warming is virtually undisputed. What seems less certain is how it will impact our personal lives going forward. The Earth’s ecosystem is complex and specific regions have had different issues. We’ve had our share of droughts in Iowa, but there has also been enough rainfall to produce crops. Some days it seems the only persistent idea about Iowa’s climate is that rain remains. When it comes to coffee, what happens six inches in front of our noses is not as important as the global environment in which humans live.

There’s the rub.

With the 2016 election of a Republican to the White House, all eyes are diverted from our most pressing problems. Challenges to the study of climate change is one of those pressing problems and not only because I may be deprived of my daily cup of coffee.

The administration walked away from policy decisions we’ve made to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. It is cutting funding for climate research. It is censoring and targeting government scientists. One could reasonably say the government under Republicans has abandoned science as a consideration in policy-making.

As Americans, we know what to do. We must repudiate the direction Republicans are taking our society by voting them out in the 2018 and 2020 elections. I’d rather linger over my morning coffee than get involved in politics again. However, personal political engagement is the price of a livable future.

Loebsack’s Rural Wireless Access Act Signed into Law

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today after his legislation, the Rural Wireless Access Act, was signed into law by President Trump. This bipartisan bill was incorporated in the FY2018 Omnibus Appropriations Act, which was passed by both the House and Senate and signed into law last week.

“Folks living in rural areas know just how bad wireless voice and mobile internet services can be. Unfortunately, the maps that the FCC currently uses are incomplete and tell a different story than what Iowans know is actually happening. I am pleased my legislation will help get resources where they are most needed, including rural communities.”

Currently, the standards that define how wireless coverage is determined are not sufficient, meaning that coverage maps can be incomplete or inaccurate. Without accurate coverage maps, resources needed to improve wireless access will not be directed to the areas that need the most help, including rural areas. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will now develop new maps to ensure resources to improve wireless voice and mobile Internet services go to the areas that need it the most.

A significant digital divide remains between urban and rural America. Congressman Loebsack is a leader in working to close this divide by promoting broadband deployment throughout rural America. Loebsack serves on the Communications and Technology subcommittee of the Energy and Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over telecommunications issues. He also serves as a co-chair of the Rural Broadband Caucus.

Evangelicals Exposed In Lust For Power

video – 5 minutes

The last couple of weeks of revelations on the Stormy Daniels tryst with the current president has also revealed a lot about one of the current president’s biggest group of faithful followers. That group are those that describe themselves as evangelical Christians.

Watching evangelical leaders twist and contort their supposedly deep, immutable and firmly held beliefs so that they can rationalize supporting a human who appears to have committed a sin against everything they believe (except abortion and homosexuality so far as we know) is almost like watching a circus sideshow.

Why would they do such a thing? Doing so should be eroding any public persona these folks have. Slowly they are becoming national laughingstocks. That is the perception among those on the outside looking in. From the inside these fake men and women of God know that Trump has what they lust for – power and wealth.

Of course the claim is that they are to do this to attain God’s plan on earth. Funny thing is that what they claim is God’s plan lines up exactly with their own beliefs and prejudices. This is not much different from any of the self proclaimed men of God no matter what the religious persuasion.

It is amazing that the followers of these charlatans don’t leave them in droves and call them out for their lust for earthly power that will cause such evangelical leaders to make a mockery of their professed beliefs.

Katha Pollit over at the Nation takes a look at this phenomena. Bottom line they will do what they must to impose their will on this country:

Say what you will about the terrible, terrifying Trump years, one good thing has already come out of them: the discrediting of evangelical Christianity. For decades, believers have boasted of their superior virtue, especially in matters of sex and marriage and parenting and social propriety. They’ve blasted premarital and extramarital sex, LGBTQ people, divorce, pornography, sex work, foul language, crude behavior, and not being a Christian—as they define “Christian”—blaming these things for everything from 9/11 to Hurricane Katrina. They never get tired of going after Bill Clinton for his infidelities and Hillary Clinton for “enabling” them. (How frustrating it must have been for them that Barack Obama, the Muslim Kenyan communist, spent eight years in the White House with nary a whiff of scandal!) Now they’ve sold their souls to Donald Trump, who has partaken freely of practically every vice and depravity known to man. Urged on by their leaders, 81 percent of white evangelicals voted for Trump—more than voted for George W. Bush, an actual evangelical—and now everyone is laughing at them. It’s about time.

<<snip>>

If you leave out the part about Trump being a corrupt, immoral con man and bully who might well plunge us into World War III—which to some evangelicals wouldn’t be so bad, given the sinfulness of humanity—there’s lots for them to like. He’s putting their guys on the federal bench—just one more Supreme Court justice and there go abortion, civil rights, gay rights, the separation of church and state, and much more. He’s installed agency heads who are right-wing Christians: Betsy DeVos, Ben Carson, Jeff Sessions, Scott Pruitt, Nikki Haley, and, if he’s confirmed, Mike Pompeo, plus virtually anyone in his administration who has anything to do with women’s health. He’s promised to get rid of the Johnson Amendment, which bars tax-exempt religious institutions from endorsing candidates, paving the way for a mammoth tide of political contributions to churches. White evangelicals distrust science, dismiss racial discrimination, believe that immigrants threaten American values, and worry about extremism among American Muslims? So does Trump.

Maybe this Easter will see true men and women of peace recognize these charlatans for what they are and quit following them.
