Another Law Signed In Secret

kim reynolds

New boss same as the old boss.

A saying that most workers at the lower levels of employment hear over and over. There is little respect for the dignity of these humans. Most bosses barely treat them as human except when they (the boss) wants something from them. They have little or no input to policies affecting their workplaces and often their lives. Policies are often made up behind closed doors by people who will never have to live by these often arbitrary rules. Then these policies are laid on the workers with a heavy hand that is basically a “my way or the highway” kind of rollout.

And now in Iowa we have a legislature and a governor who act just like the bosses that so many of us are familiar with. If the Republican controlled legislature could they surely would do their business behind closed doors. If you remember the outpouring protest that greeted Republicans gutting labor agreements last year it was quite amazing that Republicans totally ignored the protests. They acted as if there was no one else there.

Then just to add insult to injury, the Governor Branstad had the temerity to sign this bill that had huge effects on hundreds of thousands of Iowans in a private ceremony with only one witness. We could easily say that witness was Branstad’s handler from the Koch brothers. This had to be one of the most obscene photos ever taken.

Image (1) terry-branstad-drew-klein-after-branstad-signs-union-busting-bill-300x169.jpeg for post 36779

In a similar instance the previous year Branstad simply changed how Medicaid is handled in Iowa to private management. This change was greatly protested at the time, but Branstad refused to listen. He was a management tool beholden to hand a huge chunk of our money to private business.

As many predicted, this change has been a disaster. The Republican Party has had plenty of time and opportunity to fix this disaster. They hear daily from the customers of the system, but simply refuse to do anything. Since 201y our legislature has acted as if their mission is turn government into an appendage of corporations not to act to solve problems of “we the people.”

Continuing this legacy, Republicans passed the highly controversial bill banning so-called “sanctuary cities” while ignoring input from many side and Governor Reynolds snuck behind closed doors to sign the bill. Shows how proud she was of her actions.

Response from opposition to the sanctuary cities bill was immediate:

After the governor signed the bill, Rita Bettis, ACLU of Iowa legal director, issued a statement saying her organization views the law as unconstitutional.

“Let’s be clear. It violates a person’s constitutional rights for lowa law enforcement to hold them without a warrant or probable cause of a crime,” Bettis said in a statement. “But that is what ICE detainer requests ask Iowa law enforcement to do. That’s because ICE “detainer requests” are exactly that: an ask of local law enforcement to hold a person without a warrant or probable cause. As a result of this, we are deeply concerned about the passage of S.F.481 and will strive to defend the constitutional rights of Iowans against unlawful detentions.”

Critics opposed the bill as an unfunded mandate for local entities by requiring them to hold people without a court order and makes them potentially financial liable while not providing any money to cities and counties for their costs. Opponents also charged the bill was intended to score political points while scaring, intimidating and dividing Iowans.

“This law does not reflect Iowa values, and we will continue to defend each other because we believe that we all belong. Everyone sill has rights, and we will continue to fight for everyone’s rights.” said American Friends Service Committee (AFSC) Iowa Director, Erica Johnson. “Our country has seen unjust laws in the past. And just like we did then, we will stand up against SF481 and call for dignity and justice for all people in Iowa, regardless of immigration status.”

Many folks here know that Reynolds used “sanctuary cities” as her racist dog whistle to raise money last winter. The letter can be seen here.

It is an incredible shame that Iowa which has one of the greatest histories of tolerance and respect for humanity in the US is being brought to this level by a governor who would pander to the lowest racist instincts of a few Iowans. But then this is a person who proudly has racist Steve King as a member of her campaign committee.

Sunday Funday: Goodbye Paul Ryan Edition

From the time he was born, Ryan’s life has been helped along with aid from the government. Most know the story of a young man who lost his father and then his family was helped through the social security system. Then as an adult Ryan held government jobs where he fought tooth and nail to take away the kind of help he got. Kind of brings a tear to your eye when you wonder how America can create such rotten bastards.

Now he will be off to his multi-million dollar a year telling Fox News viewers a corrupted factless side of the news.

BTW- have you heard that Fox has become a word for someone or something that is really screwed up? As In “Boy that story was really Foxed up!”

Another quiet week in Dear Leader land.

  1. Talk about being Foxed up. Dear Leader is now calling for the US to join what economic organization he rejected a year ago?

Abby Finkenauer For Congress

The Finkenauer campaign for Congress in Iowa’s first district launched their first digital campaign ad and it is a good one:

The message is simple: She is one of us and will represent our interests in congress.

Anyone who has followed her since her election to the Iowa legislature knows that is true.

Iowa needs to be represented by people like Abby Funkenauer. Iowa does not deserve to be represented by by the likes of Rod Blum.

The resignation of Paul Ryan last week really changed the nature of House races across the country. Even the Speaker of the House knows that being a toady for Donald Trump is a losing cause. I believe the good people of Iowa’s first district will agree. Abby Finkenauer is truly one of them and will represent them.

  1. Columbine Anniversary

Believe it or not, this Friday, April 20th,  is the 19th anniversary of the Columbine massacre.

In our now upside down world the horror of the events at Columbine didn’t drive our country to a sober assessment of the relationship between our populace and guns, instead it drove explosive gun sales and the sickening spineless response of legislators who bowed like weak twigs to the pressure of the NRA.

Now 19 years and many massacres later a group of young survivors of a massacre are leading this country to finally begin to assess America’s love affair with guns.

So on the anniversary of Columbine student walkouts are scheduled for some 2,127 schools across the country. In Iowa walkouts are scheduled in these schools at this writing:

Is Rural Iowa Industry’s New Colonial Outpost?

Follow Ed Fallon @ http://fallonforum.com/

“Regardless of where one stands on pork, oil, or wind, we should all agree that it’s wrong to ignore the voices of rural Iowans in order to export our resources to distant ports — whether those ports lie on Lake Michigan, the Atlantic Ocean, or the China Sea.”

A new wave of colonization is in full swing. Perhaps in the twittering storm of political scandals and legislative hubris you haven’t noticed. But rural Iowans can’t help but notice as the forces of colonization steamroll their farms and communities.

Here are the most egregious examples (and yeah, the acronym spells “PLOW,” for what that’s worth):

PORK. There are 15,000 hog confinements (CAFOs) in Iowa. Given the soaring foreign demand for pork, state officials say that number could jump to 45,000! America’s largest pork producer, Smithfield Foods, is now owned by a Chinese corporation. Smithfield will get rich exporting pork to China while rural Iowans are stuck with foul air, lower property values, contaminated water, a decline in quality of life, and continued depopulation.

LAND. Foreign ownership of farmland in the US is rising. Foreign entities now control an area larger than Tennessee! Fortunately for Iowa, our law prevents foreign ownership of farmland — but powerful forces want to change that.

OIL. The Dakota Access Pipeline carved a 350-mile scar across Iowa, damaging topsoil and threatening our water for a Texas corporation’s export crude oil pipeline. As I’ve warned, don’t be surprised if Big Oil tries to build a second pipeline through Iowa.

WIND. Industrial Wind Installations (IWIs) are meeting greater and greater local resistance. More are in the works and problems associated with the turbines are fomenting extensive and impassioned local resistance.

Perhaps that last item took you by surprise, coming from someone who cites climate change as the gravest threat to life on Earth. I’ve always been disturbed by any concentration of economic power, though in the past I’ve grudgingly given wind energy a pass because of the urgency of the climate crisis.

To be clear, we absolutely need to move beyond fossil-fuel consumption as quickly as possible. Energy conservation, reducing consumption, and sequestering carbon are three of the most important actions we can take.

We also need a robust and rapidly expanding renewable energy portfolio. The backbone of that portfolio must be solar — and solar must be controlled by individuals, communities, family farmers, and small business owners. There’s room in that portfolio for wind, too, but not the centralized industrial model that increasingly dominates more and more Iowa counties.

While a handful of landowners are making money leasing their land for turbines, monopoly control of wind is wreaking havoc on rural landscapes and the people who live and farm there. In February, I traveled to Palo Alto County to visit Janna Swanson, a leader with the Coalition for Rural Property Rights. Palo Alto residents are suing MidAmerican Energy and Invenergy over a massive 340-megawatt project near Emmetsburg. There are 268 residences in the target area — yet only 24 have signed a contract to allow turbines on their land!

IWI opponents cite visual blight, shadow flicker, noise, flashing lights, pressure, turbulence, the impact on farming, and the risk to bats and birds. A separate blog could be written about each of these concerns.

While the scientific and medical impacts of IWI’s continue to be hotly debated, one thing is clear: the vast majority of people who live nearby don’t want them. That needs to be respected. When proposing an IWI, decision makers must give far greater consideration to local concerns than they do at present.

“Some people live next to a turbine and don’t have a problem,” Janna told me. “For others, there’s a cumulative effect. Take the intense pressure and turbulence. You can feel it when you’re standing nearby, almost like it’s grabbing at your heart.”

Janna says many Iowans complain that they can hear the turbines inside their home at night, even with a white-noise machine cranking away. It’s affecting their health. In some places, long-time residents have had to sell their home and move because of health problems attributed to the turbines.

A group of Palo Alto residents is suing to have the Palo County wind project stopped. Plaintiffs are preparing for an April 27 court date. The case is likely to end up before the Iowa Supreme Court.

Right now, 37% of Iowa’s electrical generation comes from wind. From the perspective of reducing fossil fuel consumption, that’s encouraging. But it comes at a heavy price for rural Iowa. It’s a price we shouldn’t have to pay given the more sustainable and less invasive options available.

As I said earlier, with Iowa’s land protected from foreign ownership, we effectively have a moratorium on that element of colonization. Perhaps it’s time for moratoriums on CAFOs, IWIs, and crude oil pipelines, too. That would carve out some space for us to have a deep, democratic conversation about what Iowa should look like in 50, 100 or even 500 years. Perhaps the original victims of this land’s colonization, Native Americans, could lead and direct that conversation.

One thing is emphatically clear to me: eminent domain should NEVER be used to condemn land for transmission lines to ship Iowa’s wind to Chicago or the East coast. An effort to use eminent domain by the Rock Island Clean Line (another Texas corporation) was defeated last year. Given the money and political power behind IWI, don’t be surprised if another proposal surfaces.

Send Republicans Home

Why I’m Running

Almost every night at around 5 a.m., my wife turns to me and asks me to take our 5 month old baby down to the living room so she can get a few more hours of sleep before she goes to work. As I sit in the chair in the pre-dawn hours with my son snuggled on my chest sleeping I often think about what his future will be in our home state of Iowa.

I am running for Iowa House in District 37 because I believe we have lost a positive progressive vision for Iowa’s future over the last few years. Iowa is a place that was so proud of its public schools but now our legislature under-funds and undermines our schools with inadequate state aid, attacks on educator’s rights to advocate for their profession, and schemes to divert public funds away from our neighborhood schools.

Iowa is a place that was proud of it’s ability to support small family farmers and small towns with good jobs but now our state legislature adopts policies that favor large corporate interests and do too little to create good middle class jobs for our citizens. Iowa was a place of fiscal conservatism where we were careful with the public funds used to provide the services Iowans needed, but now our legislature cannot seem to balance a budget and continues to hand out tax credits and breaks to the wealthy.

Iowa was always a place that believed in taking care of the beautiful land we were lucky enough to live in, but now our legislature fights against policies that promote high standards for protecting our land, air, and water. Iowa was a place known for moderation, a true “purple” state, but now our state legislature enacts laws and policies that play to the most extreme elements of their base and donors. WE MUST DO BETTER THAN THIS FOR OUR KIDS!

When elected I will work tirelessly to turn this state around and bring it back to a place where we are first in the nation in education, a place where every Iowan has an opportunity to grow and thrive with a solid middle class job, a place where workers are treated with dignity and have the right to bargain a fair contract with their employer, a place where we use common sense to balance our budget and take care of the vital services Iowans deserve, a place where our precious land, air and water are taken care of with strong protections and good land stewardship, and a state where we avoid the toxic extremism driven by outside interests and groups not representing the voice of the majority and return to common sense and moderation in the halls of the capitol.

I hope I can win your support and vote. I look forward to fighting for a forward looking vision for this state.

Report On Gun Violence in Iowa

The report doesn’t mention this, but among its other good suggestions, the single most obvious thing that can be done to address the gun problem in Iowa is to stop electing Republicans. Below is a release from Progress Iowa.

Des Moines, Iowa — A report released today from the Center for American Progress and Progress Iowa offers new insights into the efforts to prevent gun violence in Iowa as well as how those efforts are falling short. Despite strong state gun laws and among the lowest gun death rates in the nation, Iowa has begun to slide in its gun violence prevention work as its [*Republican] leaders systematically weaken the state’s gun laws and threaten to undo much of the progress previously made on this issue.

“Gun violence affects every Iowan differently, but it’s growing impact cannot be ignored by state leaders [*Republicans] any longer,” said Matt Sinovic, executive director of Progress Iowa and co-author of the report. “A gun death in Iowa occurs every 39 hours, and with more than 2,000 Iowans killed by a gun over the past 10 years, our elected leaders [*Republicans] cannot stand idly by as gun violence takes its toll on our state. We must stand strongly in opposition to efforts to further weaken our gun laws—that strategy hasn’t worked in other states and it won’t work in Iowa.”

“Like much of the country, Iowa has been backsliding on gun violence prevention efforts in recent years, putting community safety at risk,” said Eugenio Weigend, associate director for Gun Violence Prevention at the Center for American Progress and co-author of the report. “Iowa was once a national model for combating gun violence, but as state leaders [*Republicans] work to undo much of its strong gun laws, the rest of the country should be paying attention.”

*Bracketed information an editorial comment by Blog for Iowa and was not in the original article by ProgressIowa.

The report lays out a menu of policy options to combat the rising tide of gun violence in Iowa. Among those recommendations:

  • Close the long gun loophole and require background checks for all long gun sales.

  • Enact a gun violence restraining order.

  • Require gun owners to report lost or stolen guns.

  • Restore law enforcement discretion in the issuance of concealed carry permits.

  • Repeal the dangerous “stand your ground” law.

One Iowa Celebrates Nine Years Of Marriage Equality

Oneiowa.org

Nine years ago on April 3, 2009, the Iowa Supreme Court unanimously decided to uphold Iowa’s legacy of equality and make Iowa the third state in the nation to establish marriage equality (Varnum v. Brien). Six brave plaintiff couples and families raised their voices, shared their stories, and stood up to intense public scrutiny in order to advance equality for same-sex couples statewide. Varnum v. Brien was a watershed moment for the nationwide LGBTQ rights movement that proved marriage equality could be achieved not just on the coasts, but in the heartland as well.

“One Iowa was founded as a marriage equality organization in 2005, and Varnum v. Brien was an incredible victory not only for our organization, but LGBTQ people throughout the state,” One Iowa Executive Director Daniel Hoffman-Zinnel said. “We’ve moved on to other important work, but One Iowa will never forget the Courageous Six and their contribution to LGBTQ equality in Iowa. We would not be where we are today without them, and I personally would not have had the privilege of marrying my husband Charles in 2010.”

Every year since 2010, One Iowa has hosted a Gala celebration to commemorate Varnum v. Brien and celebrate the Iowa LGBTQ community’s successes in the fight for full equality. This year, One Iowa will host its 9th Annual Gala Celebration on Friday, April 13 at the Community Choice Credit Union Convention Center. Cocktail hour begins at 6 p.m., and the program begins at 7 p.m. The organization projects over 800 people will attend the event, making it the largest Gala celebration in the organization’s history.

One Iowa’s 9th Gala Celebration will feature a cocktail hour, dinner, live and silent auctions, live music by the Freddy Gazzo Band, and an awards ceremony honoring the work Iowa’s LGBTQ activists have accomplished this year. Award-winning journalist Sonya Heitsusen of WHO-TV Channel 13 News will emcee the program. This year’s awardees include:

Veridian Credit Union, one of Iowa’s largest credit unions
Sophia Stone, president of Transformations Iowa, a support group for transgender and non-binary Iowans.
Jane Meyer and Tracey Griesbaum, plaintiffs in landmark discrimination lawsuits against the University of Iowa, resulting in external review of the university’s employment practices

The event’s proceeds will support One Iowa’s mission to preserve and advance LGBTQ equality in Iowa through grassroots efforts and education. The sponsors of One Iowa’s 9th Annual Gala Celebration include Principal, Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Human Rights Campaign, Meredith Corporation, Rockwell Collins, and Veridian Credit Union among others. Tickets may be purchased online here.

One Iowa is a statewide lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer/questioning (LGBTQ) organization working toward equality for LGBTQ individuals through grassroots efforts, education and advocacy.
