Who knew? Ernst appears to be just stringing words together on this Fox segment. Joni: “It is a scare tactic that is being used by the Democrats… they just want to jump to that conclusion obviously because they don’t like the president..” Fox News: “In all fairness when we took out Saddam Hussein war did ensue…” Joni: “Things are different now.” Okay!
The Hidden History of the War on Voting: Who Stole Your Vote — and How to Get it Back by Thom Hartmann is a quick but important read for people who want or need to review the history and origins of today’s concerted, well-organized campaign to make it more difficult to vote for some while making it increasingly convenient for others.
It answers the question what can we do to ensure everyone has a voice in our democracy? It’s a page turner intended to teach us things we didn’t know about voter suppression.
Hartmann takes readers through the founders’ reasons for curbing the right to vote for Native Americans, women and slaves, the growing influence of moneyed interests beginning with the U.S. Supreme Court case Buckley vs. Valeo, the impact of Brown vs. Board of Education on voting, and more. The final section of the book offers solutions in the form of points of action to protect our fundamental right to vote.
“But isn’t Hartmann preaching to the choir?” engaged readers might ask.
What’s important about this book is it retells the story of voting in America from an actionable perspective. It is easy to read and understand with a focus on how to increase voter participation, eliminate political gerrymandering, end “voter caging,” and more.
Many of us are familiar with Ari Berman’s 2015 book Give Us The Ballot: The Modern Struggle for Voting Rights in America. It is a history of the 1965 Voting Rights Act which people interested in politics should read if they haven’t. What Hartmann adds to the discussion of voting rights is the history of voter disenfranchisement that is baked into our constitution, along with what readers can do to protect and restore voting rights going forward.
In the final section of the book, Hartmann puts potential solutions to voter suppression efforts in high relief. Many people may understand aspects of his narrative already. The benefit of reading the book is its long-form and coherent narrative.
So often our ideas about voter suppression are formed by snippets of information in various media about specific aspects of the overall effort. Increasingly social media is a key driver for informing our opinions, yet it presents an incomplete picture. It is not enough. What has been lacking is a more comprehensive look at voter suppression efforts and how to combat them in easy to understand language. Hartmann delivers that and more.
I found the book empowering. Last week I met a woman advocating for D.C. statehood for a group called Iowans for D.C. Statehood. I signed up as an endorser yet told her D.C. was not enough and explained the logic Hartmann put forward in his book about adding additional states. The Hidden History of the War on Voting: Who Stole Your Vote — and How to Get it Back well prepared me for the conversation.
Below is a clip of Thom Hartmann reading from his book. It will be available on Feb. 11, 2020. Click here to order your copy.
Fox News, conservative talk radio, and the vast right wing propaganda machine all exist to throw mud at everything good. Watch the segment on Fox News below with a critical eye. Hopefully, more people will realize we have to do something directly to fight the Murdoch propaganda industry before it ruins our country like it did Australia. If it hasn’t already.
Make no mistake about it, good, smart people watch this stuff. They think it makes sense because it mixes lies with truth, as all good liars know how to do. It’s not just right wing idiots and zealots that are brainwashed by Fox News and talk radio as many progressives believe. It is friends and neighbors, people you grew up with, teachers, regular people. They are influenced in their thinking by what they see on Fox News and what their friends say about Fox News even if they don’t watch. Fox News is everywhere. It pollutes the political dialogue and makes it extremely difficult for reality to break through, which is the point of it.
Watch this segment and realize this is purposeful, sophisticated rhetoric, not harmless or stupid blather. It is ugly and it is hard to watch. It influences people. And it is being replicated on talk radio all throughout Iowa.

Remember that dart board your spouse got for you this Christmas so you could scientifically pick your choice for the Democratic nominee for president? Time to get it out and start practicing, the time is nigh upon us. In case you missed it, the caucuses are 3 weeks from tomorrow. Party time!
This will be followed by Get Out of Iowa Tuesday when Iowans will feel the effects of jet blasts as airplanes by the score move candidates, staffers and journalists east. Effects should be done by noon on Tuesday.
Also remember that the never-ending war the Trump starts today will be waiting for your unborn children when they come of age.

They are running a series on the effects of a possible striking down of the ACA. This is the second in the series of 11. We chose to post this one because many folks do not understand what WILL happen when the pre-existing clause of the ACA is no longer in effect:

Health Care Lawsuit Days of Action:
Protections For People With Pre-Existing Conditions
Des Moines, Iowa – Last month, the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled in favor of the Trump administration and Republicans in Texas vs. United States, striking down as unconstitutional the ACA’s individual mandate and remanding to the lower court judge a final decision on what parts of the ACA should be eliminated – the very judge who has already ruled the entire law unconstitutional. If President Trump and Republicans have their way, 20 million Americans will lose their insurance coverage, 135 million Americans with pre-existing conditions will be stripped of their protections, and costs will go up for millions.
“The Fifth Circuit’s disastrous decision on President Trump’s Texas lawsuit puts the health care of millions of Americans at risk. The court’s decision will impact every corner of the American health care system, threatening protections for 135 million Americans with pre-existing conditions and access to care for children, seniors, women, individuals with disabilities, and LGBTQ Americans in communities across the country,” said Progress Iowa Executive Director and Protect Our Care state director Matt Sinovic. “Over the course of the next two weeks, we will be reminding Iowans what’s really at stake if the courts ultimately overturn the health care law.”
“Every Iowan deserves to have the health care they need, and people like me and my daughter with pre-existing conditions should not be penalized by insurance companies,” said Emily Holley, the executive director of Iowa Voices. “An insurance company only sees the bottom line, not what my doctor says I need, or the care that my family needs. That’s why we are fighting to keep legal protections for people with pre-existing conditions. It’s up to all of us to use our voice to hold elected officials accountable, and we will not let them forget that they should represent us, not the special interests that bankroll their campaigns.”
Days of Action: Day 2 of 11 focuses on Protections For People With Pre-Existing Conditions. To learn more about our Days of Action, visit our website.
What’s At Stake: Protections For People With Pre-Existing Conditions:
Without the ACA, protections for 135 million Americans with pre-existing conditions will be eliminated overnight, and the uninsured rate will increase by 65 percent.
The ACA included four key provisions that protect people with pre-existing conditions. If the law is overturned in the Texas lawsuit:
Premium Surcharges Can Once Again Be In The Six Figures. Thanks to the Republican lawsuit, insurance companies can charge people more because of a pre-existing condition. The House-passed repeal bill had a similar provision, and an analysis by the Center for American Progress found that insurers could charge up to $4,270 more for asthma, $17,060 more for pregnancy, $26,180 more for rheumatoid arthritis and $140,510 more for metastatic cancer.
More Than 140 Million Americans Could Once Again Have To Pay For Preventive Care. Because of the ACA, private health plans must cover preventive services — like flu shots, cancer screenings, contraception, and mammograms – at no cost to consumers. More than 140 million Americans are enrolled in plans that provide free preventive services, including 133 million people with employer coverage.
Reinstate Lifetime and Annual Limits On 109 Million Privately Insured Americans. Repealing the Affordable Care Act means insurance companies would be able to impose annual and lifetime limits on coverage for those insured through their employer or on the individual market. In 2009, prior to the implementation of the ACA, 59 percent of workers covered by employer-sponsored health plans had a lifetime limit.

Most of us probably heard or saw some portion of the current president’s speech on Wednesday morning. This was the speech discussing the Iran situation. The content was as usual filled with lies geared to blame everything on the previous president, which should be attacked much more loudly by the media.
What was almost as disturbing was the current president’s look – he looked like a standing corpse according to my wife – plus his slow, almost painful walk to and from the podium. Along with a slow, delivery that didn’t flow that was punctuated with several episodes of deep sniffling.
The current president’s health has been one of the many aspects of this presidency that folks speculate on because the information that is made public has been pretty unbelievable. Who can forget Adm. Ronny Jackson being ridiculed following giving the president a physical and pronouncing him fit? Who can forget the president’s sudden Saturday afternoon trip to Walter Reed just before Thanksgiving? Remember the lie to cover that one? It was the beginning of the president’s annual physical. A sudden unannounced trip to the hospital with doctor in the car is the way you take an annual physical?
So at Wednesday’s speech and also at Thursday’s speech we have what appears to be a very sick man. Especially around the eyes. I am no doctor or a medical person in any way, but when folks I have known get very sick, their eyes often get dark and sunken as if they have not slept for days.
And the sniffling. This has been the topic of speculation since the debates in 2016. It seems that at every major speech, the sniffles accompany the reading from the teleprompter. What is the source of the sniffles.? In my experience it is usually a bad cold or some drug use. American should be told of the source of the president’s need to suck wind. And we should be told the truth.
Why should we know? This is a president who literally has his finger on the nuclear button. Americans should know if he is making decisions with a clear mind or is his thinking impaired by drugs. Also, thanks to some incredibly messed up diplomacy and bullying and just plain bad decisions the president while apparently ignoring advice from military and intelligence advisors has brought our country to the brink of war.
If we go to war there will most likely be American deaths as well as death of civilians in other countries. Once again we need to know whether the president is operating with a clear mind or is his decision making – which is often done only by the president – altered by drugs of some kind.
So once again I will engage one of my most frustrating exercises, that of writing our two Republican senators with the small glimmer of hope that something I say will ignite a small fire of concern for our country, its citizens and world peace. However, reality and experience tells me that I will get a response from Grassley that will say in 2000 words “Please quit bothering me.” From Ernst I have learned to expect nothing in response to my letter. I will however get one of her ridiculous “government waste’ letters that is a huge waste.
And so goes government of the rich, by the rich and for the rich these days.
ProgressNow State Leaders Call For Vote Limiting Trump’s Power & Condemns Trump’s Hostile Rhetoric Which Puts All Americans In Danger
Over the past few days, we have become a country that is once again on the brink of war. This crisis was created because President Donald Trump was unable or unwilling to fully think through the very real consequences of his words and actions.
ProgressNow affiliated states from across the country, released the following statement today:
“Today we are calling on the U.S. House to vote to limit recently impeached President Trump’s ability to instigate global conflict, and calling on the President himself to act with diplomacy rather than the hostile and dangerous rhetoric we have seen come out of this administration over the past few days.
Time and time again, we see both on a national level and an international level that Donald Trump’s extreme policies are dangerously out of touch with what Americans want and need. We do not mourn the death of General Soleimani, but we do want peace in the region. We need to build on—not reject—the Iranian nuclear deal and use the tools of diplomacy to pursue a coherent strategy and refrain from making illogical decisions that alienate our allies.
The best way to support our brave men and women in uniform is to keep them from harm in a reckless and unnecessary conflict. The President created this crisis. His behavior during this time has been unacceptable. He continues to mislead the public, in this case about the alleged existence of an “imminent” threat and bypasses consultation with Congress followed by a sham briefing. We may not be so lucky in the future if this type of childish and harmful behavior continues. We now need leadership from both parties to hold this President accountable and call for a full investigation about how and why he came to making this decision. Now is the time when cooler heads must prevail; we need bold leadership to put a stop to this, work toward peace, and determine how we got to this point and ensure we do not come this close to the brink of war again.”

Massive update — the Washington Post reported that Mitch McConnell has the votes to force his witness-free sham impeachment trial through to the Senate. That means he could bring a vote on the rules as soon as the House sends over the articles, which could be as soon as tomorrow — unless we stop him.
As a reminder, this is the “trial” where they’re planning to not hear from any witnesses. Yeah, that’s just as ridiculous as it sounds.
Indivisibles have been at the forefront of pushing for impeachment from day one, and we ABSOLUTELY REFUSE to let McConnell get away with this sham. So we need you to do one or both of these things right now:
When you’re done, reply to this email to let us know! Then watch our social media channels and Impeachment Daily for more updates — we’ll send them the moment we have them. Thank you so much for being with us.

We will not be forced into another war. On Thursday, January 9, at 5 p.m. local time, the anti-war majority in this country will get visible to oppose Trump’s war and say #NoWarWithIran.
Trump’s reckless action has needlessly endangered countless lives of U.S. troops, Iraqis, Iranians, and countless other civilians. The devastation that a war with Iran could bring upon the earth and humanity cannot be overstated—millions of lives hang in the balance. None of us will win, except politicians and corporations. Even more resources that our communities desperately need will be wasted on unnecessary violence. People in the United States and across the globe are tired of war—from the military families who have seen multiple generations serve in the same conflict, to the Iranian, Iraqi, and Afghan families in the United States who worry for their loved ones back home.
We’ve learned our lessons from Iraq, Afghanistan, Yemen, and global endless war. We will not be driven by lies into another war. We will not allow our Iranian-American and Muslim neighbors to be targeted by law enforcement. We will not be divided.
When Trump acts with ignorance, fear, and ego, we will act with diplomacy and prioritize what is best for humanity. We are the majority. We stand united. And we oppose Trump’s war with Iran.
