November is coming. Prepare to vote.

November is coming. Prepare to vote.
“Things don’t get real for Americans until it affects them personally….when it gets to 5 or 10% of Americans who have a family member who has died.”
At a time when Iowans need leadership most, Ernst and Grassley have abandoned those hit hardest by the coronavirus crisis
DES MOINES, IA — Iowa State Senator Joe Bolkcom released the following statement after the U.S. Department of Labor reported that more than 20 million jobs were lost and the unemployment rate skyrocketed to 14.7 percent in April:
“In this time of crisis, Iowans need Senators Ernst and Grassley to fight for them in Washington more than ever. But instead, they both voted to restrict unemployment benefits and prevent paid leave, critical tools that would have helped struggling Iowans get through this global pandemic. Further, they have yet to promise to ensure funding for our state and cities so they can avoid bankruptcy — which Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell is recklessly pushing for. We need our senators to stand up for Iowans.”
BACKGROUND
Senators Ernst and Grassley voted to restrict unemployment benefits on March 25, 2020.
Senators Ernst and Grassley voted to remove paid sick leave from a coronavirus relief bill on March 18, 2020.
Last week alone, 181,358 Iowans filed for unemployment benefits. And nationally, last month, 701,000 jobs were lost and the unemployment rate was 4.4 percent. This month’s unemployment rate was more than 10 percentage points higher – the highest it’s been since the Great Depression.

Ron Cameron of Mountaire Farms, Ken Sullivan of Smithfield Foods, Rodney McMullen of Kroger, Noel White of Tyson Foods and Zippy Duvall, the president of the American Farm Bureau Federation, were asked to remove their masks before a meeting with Mike Pence in Iowa on Friday.
And they all obeyed. Can’t help but wonder what would have happened if one or all of them had just kept their mask on. It is apparently extremely important to the Trump administration that there be no photo ops with masks on.
Here is another debate with the now 4 candidates to replace perhaps Iowa’s worst senator ever, Joni Ernst. This debate took place Sunday May 3rd, 2020.
Candidate Cal Woods dropped out after this debate. He then endorsed rival Admiral Michael Franken.

As Senator Hogg reminds us at the beginning, the primary is June 2. You should have gotten a vote by mail request from the Secretary of State’s office last week. If not please go here.
Print the request off, fill it out and mail it to your own county’s auditor. You can find their address here.
From the SOS website:
Request Deadline for Mailed Ballots
The request form must be received in the county auditor’s office by 5 p.m. on the Friday, eleven days before the election. If the request is for the general election, the deadline to request a ballot by mail is the Saturday, ten days before the election.
5PM Friday, 11 days before the election means that the request must be IN the auditor’s office by Friday May 22 at 5 PM. Plan accordingly.
Happy Mother’s Day in these trying times. Try your best to shelter in and stay safe. It is hard to do.
Back when we had presidents who would lead: (1 minute 30 seconds)
Now we have a president who has simply surrendered to the coronavirus. He has declared us all “warriors” and basically said we are on our own. Good Luck! But he will still get in the way of Americans getting the tools they need to fight – the masks, the tests, the PPE. Isn’t that like being a traitor?
Another historical week as something like 15,000 people die, yet we “reopen” to help Donny Corona’s chances to be re-elected.

What kind of Memorial will the grateful people of the US erect for Donny Corona?
I feel like we’re dangerously close to the federal response to the pandemic becoming “thoughts and prayers”. – Aaron E Carroll
You know how the White House knows that it’s safe to hold a press conference? They test the reportersWhat do they do before Pres. Trump meets business leaders? They take temperatures & administer coronavirus tests. Why isn’t there a plan to do the same thing for the country? – Sen. Chuck Schumer

10 years and Republicans are still trying to kill what is a lifesaver in the pandemic.

IA Attorney General Tom Miller, Dr. Glenn Hurst, and Debbie Koopman, a Resident of Cedar Rapids Warn of Disastrous Consequences of Texas Lawsuit to Overturn the ACA Amid Coronavirus Pandemic
Call comes as Briefs Are Filed by the House and State AGs
(28 minutes, very interesting)
Des Moines, Iowa — Today, Protect Our Care Iowa and Progress Iowa were joined by Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller, Dr. Glenn Hurst from Minden, and Debbie Koopman, a resident of Cedar Rapids on a press call to discuss the briefs filed in the Supreme Court by the House of Representatives and Democratic attorneys general opposing the lawsuit to overturn the Affordable Care Act. Iowa Voices and Health Care Voter also co-hosted today’s call.
Attorney General Tom Miller has led the charge to protect Iowans’ health care from this lawsuit, for which oral arguments before the Supreme Court are expected in the fall of 2020. He and others described the consequences of the lawsuit for Iowans, particularly in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.
“For people’s healthcare to be put in jeopardy during this time is as bad a time as you can imagine,” said Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller. “I think that it’s really important that we join together as a group of states and DC to try to defeat this lawsuit which would have these enormous consequences.”
Dr. Hurst said, “Each point that [AG Tom Miller] brought up, brought the image of a personal case to my head. I can see a face on every single one of those issues, people who would lose their benefits from not being covered after age 26, people who would lose their benefits because of pre-existing conditions, people who would just never have access to care because they didn’t have an employer based plan to rely on.
While speaking about her daughter’s struggles with navigating access to health care as a young adult with chronic health issues, Debbie Koopman says, “It’s so important for these kids to know that they will have continuing care when they have pre-existing conditions. So, now with the pandemic, her current employer says that they will cover her health insurance until the end of the month.”
You can listen to a full recording of the call here.
Reminder from the editor:
Senator Ernst has previously voted to end the ACA in congress.
Also, you may have noted that this lawsuit has been pushed back to the next Supreme Court session with arguments to be heard in October. This is a consequence of the Republican packing of the SCOTUS, and the placement of justices Gorsuch and Kavanaugh on the Court.
Moving the hearing back to October with the announcement of a verdict well after the election was deliberately done to shield the president and senators like Ernst from criticism for opposing the ACA during the election campaign. Taking health care away from millions (30?) of Americans and hundreds of thousands of Iowans especially when the pandemic has shown how necessary some form of universal health care is.
The fact that the Court moved the date to protect the president and his Party should give a major indication of how this case will be decided. Also how cowardly the Republican Party is.

go to work, maybe die. Don’t go to work, lose your unemployment.
An editorial in the Detroit Free Press last week really nailed what is going on particularly in Republican led governments across the nation including our national leaders and those here in Iowa.
The article is written by Len Niehoff, a Professor from Practice at the University of Michigan Law School. In his editorial Professor Niehoff discusses the role of evidence not just in law, but also its use in our daily lives. He points out that we should all be using to make decisions daily.
Professor Niehoff goes on to discuss how evidence may work in a courtroom to lead to good decisions. He then discusses how the US, as a society has in the case of Covid-19 seems to have put the the use of evidence aside:
“COVID-19 has revealed our societal failure to understand what evidence is and to respect how it works. National and local political leaders have made decisions that ignored the evidence. Members of the general public have proved slow to accept the evidence. Measures adopted to help flatten the curve have been met with virulent protests, despite the evidence that they are working.”
COVID-19 has no monopoly here. We’ve done little to address global warming, despite the evidence. We pretend the wild escalation of the national debt has no consequences, despite the evidence. And so on.
We have become a nation of magical thinkers, making decisions based on what we hope is the case and whom we want to believe. (bolding mine- ed) When confronted with opposing evidence, we do not engage with it. We dismiss it and stick a label on it: “fake,” “phony,” “biased,” etc. And then we mistake that label for evidence.”
Just a couple of minutes thought show that Professor Niehoff’s words nail a real problem in our society. We have leaders who seem to believe that claiming a problem isn’t a problem will make it go away. Or simply ignoring a problem will make it go away.
Here in Iowa our Governor set up criteria for reopening businesses based on scientific data- evidence if you will. When the evidence – continually rising infection and death rates – got in the way of her desire to do something such as keeping meat packing plants open or reopening bars and restaurants, she started on her journey of “magical thinking.” Instead of being guided by the science – by the evidence – suddenly the evidence was explained away as not being real.
We are but a few days into her experiment with magical thinking, but so far it is really looking like following the evidence would have been a much better move for Iowa’s citizens. The Governor opened 77 of Iowa’s 99 counties last week. Suddenly there are unexpected outbreaks of coronavirus infections in some of those 77 counties.
Evidence be damned, Governor Reynolds is now moving to reopen the the 22 counties this weekend. Iowa has among the the highest rates of infection per 1000 people in the country. When asked about this in her Thursday news conference, Reynolds became visibly irritated. The problem was that we were doing more tests. More magical thinking.
Apparently looking at evidence as a guide for public policy in a national or state emergency now takes a back seat to how a leader is feeling about the situation or a desire to please Donald Trump. We do have examples of governors following evidence with great results during the coronavirus outbreak. Cuomo in New York, Newsom in California and Inslee in Washington have all seen huge outbreaks begin to come under some control by following the science and using evidence.
Sorry to tell you fellow Iowans, but Reynolds magic thinking has us going the other way. Unfortunately, there is no way to remove her for nearly 3 years.
So without our elected officials doing what they are supposed to be doing – working for the greater good of all – we must step in and take care of ourselves. And your government just made it harder by opening everything up. Just because things are open doesn’t mean that the threat to life or long term problems is gone. It just means that Kim Reynolds doesn’t want to deal with them as she should.
So stay home when you can. If you must go out, protect yourselves with mask and gloves. Be careful not to touch eyes, nose or mouth until you have a chance to clean your hands with soap and water or a hand sanitizer.
If we can’t get rid of a governor who believes in magical thinking, we can out some folks in the legislature who do not believe in magical thinking. That would be Democrats. They can serve as a counter balance to a governor who doesn’t have our interests at heart.

Sinclair Broadcast Group agreed to pay a record $48 million civil penalty to settle three Federal Communications Commission investigations, including the company’s disclosure of information related to its proposed acquisition of Tribune Media, which was withdrawn in 2018.
“Sinclair’s conduct during its attempt to merge with Tribune was completely unacceptable,” FCC Chairman Ajit Pai said in a news release Wednesday. “Today’s penalty, along with the failure of the Sinclair/Tribune transaction, should serve as a cautionary tale to other licensees seeking Commission approval of a transaction in the future.”
The fine is the largest in the 86-year history of the FCC. It also closes investigations into whether Sinclair negotiated retransmission agreements with cable networks in “good faith” and the company’s failure to properly identify the sponsor of content it produced for its owned and affiliated TV stations.
Sinclair agreed to buy Chicago-based Tribune Media’s 42 TV stations for $3.9 billion in May 2017. The deal was derailed after the FCC voiced concerns that Sinclair may have attempted to skirt ownership rules by misrepresenting station sales to meet regulatory limits.
The agreement to sell Chicago’s WGN-Ch. 9 for $60 million to a newly formed company headed by Steven Fader, a longtime business associate of Sinclair Executive Chairman David Smith with no previous broadcast experience, was cited at length in the FCC order.
Amid scrutiny by regulators, Tribune Media pulled the plug on the deal in August 2018.

Help save our local news!
Here is an important action alert sponsored by Progress America, PEN America, Daily Kos, People For the American Way, and Reporters Without Borders USA.
The petition already has over 18,000 signatures on the way to their goal of 25,000.
Local media outlets, especially newspapers, are struggling to survive without advertising revenue while the economy is shut down. Communities depend on their local news for daily updates and information relevant to our lives. Please consider signing this petition to congress to provide aid for local media in any future stimulus packages.
https://actionnetwork.org/petitions/tell-congress-local-news-is-critical-in-the-midst-of-a-pandemic
Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, local news outlets have been providing indispensable, real-time updates on information imperative to safeguarding America’s communities. Yet, many outlets will not survive COVID-19 without immediate economic help.
As Congress considers future economic stimulus aid packages for impacted people and businesses, they must also provide a lifeline to local reporters and local media to ensure they continue providing their vital service to the American people.
We’re calling for at least $5 billion to support local journalists and to make information accessible to communities of color, rural communities, working-class communities and immigrant communities. This can take the form of direct financial aid as well as increased federal ad spending in local and community media.
Sign the petition to Congress to include funding for local news in the next stimulus package.
Here’s what the letter says:
To: All Members of Congress
From: [Your Name] Click here to sign your name
As you consider further economic stimulus legislation to help the country at this precarious moment, we urge you to include targeted assistance to local journalists, just as you have with other industries deemed essential to our nation’s health, prosperity and recovery. Local news outlets, ranging from state to city and community-level media organizations, are necessary partners in meeting the critical information needs of Americans—especially during today’s public health and economic crisis.
