“Dear [Your Legislator/Senator’s Name],

I am writing to ask you to support SF2008- Moratorium & HF456/SF2006 – Local Control. Nothing could be more important than safe air and safe water for Iowa’s children and families. Iowans are tired of manure brown or toxic algae green water that is neither safe for drinking or recreating from the vast amounts of hog manure that is dumped in Iowa annually. All counties in Iowa now have either poor or very poor air quality due to the constant emissions of toxic gases and particulate from thousands of unregulated factory farms in our state. This is no longer acceptable, and politicians who choose the best interests of big corporations will be sent home. I hope that you will choose to put the health and welfare of ALL Iowans ahead of the best interests of the pork industry.

Sincerely,
Your Name
Your Address

Shocking: Number of Iowa CAFOs Up To 10,000 Today From 722 in 2001

[Source: “Report calls for hog farm moratorium, new permit system,” The Republic, David Pitt, 26 Jan 2018 ]

DES MOINES, Iowa — A new report on the rapid expansion of hog farms in Iowa calls for a moratorium on new barns and concludes that the state’s regulatory system is failing to protect the environment and public health for the sake of profit of the politically powerful livestock industry.

“A tipping point has been reached. Rural Iowans have every reason to be concerned,” said the report released Thursday by retired University of Iowa professors James Merchant and David Osterberg.

Merchant is professor emeritus of Public Health and Medicine and founded the College of Public Health and Osterberg is professor emeritus of Occupational and Environmental Health. He is co-founder of the Iowa Policy Project, an Iowa City-based nonprofit group that offers research on environmental, economic, energy and tax policies, which released the report.

They point out that the number of Iowa livestock farms called concentrated animal feeding operations or CAFOs has grown to more than 10,000 from 722 in 2001. The annual growth has been around 500 new or expanded barns a year for the last decade. Most of them are built to house pigs to satisfy the rapidly growing export market for pork, which grew to nearly $6 billion in 2016, up 7 percent in one year.

Exports to the China and Hong Kong markets broke the $1 billion mark for the first time in 2016 and exports are expected to further expand to meet China’s insatiable appetite for pork.

The report concludes that livestock production contributes to degradation of water quality, increased cases of asthma and other illnesses among residents near hog confinement operations and a 20 to 40 percent decline in the value of homes near hog farms because of the odor.

“The current industrial model is not sustainable given its high input costs, rising energy demands, fresh water needs, climate change, and adverse environmental and public health impacts,” the report concluded. “The very real pushback from rural residents and communities will, however, be sustained.”

Merchant and Osterberg made several recommendations including revision of the permitting process for new barns that would allow for increased local input, a moratorium on new construction and establishment of land covenants and other local legal strategies to limit local livestock barn growth.

The pork industry acknowledges growth in the industry but considers it good for farmers and good for the economy of Iowa, the nation’s leading pork producer which had nearly 23 million pigs as of the USDA December inventory report. That was nearly a quarter of the national supply of 73.2 million. The next closest state was North Carolina with 9.3 million hogs.

“We understand there are concerns out there and we believe those concerns are being addressed by the current system understanding that others don’t,” said Eldon McAfee, an agriculture law attorney who represents the Iowa Pork Producers Association.

A spokeswoman for the Iowa Farm Bureau, one of the state’s largest agriculture lobbying groups, declined to comment on the report and spokesman for the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, which oversees livestock farm permitting and inspections, did not immediately respond to a message.

There are signs that a public groundswell is building in opposition to sustained rapid growth.

County supervisors from 20 of Iowa’s 99 counties lobbied lawmakers changes in the permit process which has allowed for 97 percent of new livestock barn applications to be approved even when local county officials, local citizens and neighbors have protested.

Nine livestock farm nuisance lawsuits are pending in Iowa courts. The Iowa Supreme Court will hear arguments on Feb. 12 in a case in which a group of southeast Iowa landowners are trying to strike down as unconstitutional a law that provides livestock farms with immunity from nuisance lawsuits.

Sunday Funday: Universal Healthcare Edition

Since I ran across these cute videos from HealthyCA.org it seemed like a good idea to remind us that once Dear Leader quits hogging the news, Democrats need to get back to the business of doing good things for this country. Certainly one of the most important, most wanted and what will be the most appreciated once we get it will be universal health care: (about 3 minutes)

Note the similarity to the old “Schoolhouse Rock” videos. We’ll have another after this week’s questions:

  1. Thursday night Fox News chose to cover what while they ignored the devastating story that Dear Leader had fired Special Investigator Mueller last June?
  1. Even though the firing of Mueller last June was breaking news Thursday, what reporter actually reported the story last June when it happened?
  1. What state is countering the FCC’s ending of net neutrality with the governor issuing an executive order requiring net neutrality within that state’s borders?
  1. The gymnastics team doctor convicted of multiple sex crimes was given what sentence?
  1. Fallout from the Nassar case included the resignation of Lou Anna Simon from her post as what?
  1. The school shooting in Marshall County, Kentucky was what number school shooting of the year 2018?
  1. These school shootings in 2018 include an incident in what Iowa city?
  1. What Iowa legislator made headlines last weekend with his arrest for DUI?
  1. The end of the government shutdown Monday also brought funding back to what program being held hostage by Republicans?
  1. The gun industry held its annual trade show in what city last week?
  1. What beloved rock star announced he has Parkinson’s Disease last week and thus will quit touring?
  1. In another gerrymandering case what state’s Supreme Court declared that gerrymandering violates the state’s constitution?
  1. Thanks to the tax cut bill, what maker of Huggies diapers will cut 5,000 jobs and close 10 factories?
  1. An 8.0 earthquake causing tsunami warnings along the west coast was recorded off the coast of what state Tuesday?
  1. Dear Leader gave a major hand to the fossil fuels industry by doing what to solar cells?
  1. Calling Dear Leader a “five-deferment draft dodger” what senator lambasted the president on the floor of the senate about the government shutdown?
  1. What group still backs Dear Leader nearly 100% despite stories of the huge payoff for sex with a porn star while he was married to Melania?
  1. Taylor Weyeneth will leave his cushy government job by the end of the month. Weyeneth became the #2 person in the Office of National Drug Control policy despite what?
  1. Who has been picked to give the Democratic response to Dear Leader’s State of the Union Tuesday?
  1. Republicans spent part of their week focusing on rumors of a “secret society” within what cabinet department?

Another video in the Schoolhouse Rock genre from HealthyCA.org: (3 minutes)

Life Is Short. People Are Hurting. Don’t Be A Jerk

Today_s_Inspiration_large

hat tip to: https://betterhuman.today/blogs/news/114423875-dont-be-a-jerk

A friend on facebook tipped me off to this article by John Pavlovitz the other day. This article kind of synthesizes many thoughts that have been rumbling through my head not only since the current president took over but going clear back into the Clinton days when the early manifestations of wide spread jerkiness started appearing in society.

There has always been a certain amount of jerks in our society. However in the main (and mind you I have spent my life in Iowa) most people were polite and courteous to other people, not wishing to burden others with their boorishness.

However, jerks in society seemed to have been on the increase since Newt Gingrich’s reign as House Speaker. Social discourse during the reign of Bush the second got even jerkier as we as a nation began to live as it were in different worlds. Once America at least had some facts held in common and history held in common and some values held in common. During the Bush years that broke down. That break down in commonly held facts and beliefs led to barriers to social exchanges.

This led to a “we/they” or an “us/them” splintering in our society. That breakdown increased throughout the Obama years despite repeated gallant attempts by the President to close the  gaps that persisted.

The election of the current president has seemed to given a stamp of approval to being a jerk. The widening inequality in our society has also caused everyone to be much more tense, more afraid and more insecure. These are qualities that lead people to act out in ways that some consider anti-social.

Everybody has stress. The economic focus of the last several decades of making the rich richer with a huge transfer of wealth from the middle and poorer classes to the wealthy has greatly exacerbated that stress. When people are on edge, they can act like jerks.

Here is a sampling of John Pavlovitz’ thoughts on this theme:

“I tried to look beneath the surface veneer they wore; to imagine the invisible burdens they might be carrying beneath it: sick children, relational collapse, financial tension, crippling depression, profound grief, crisis of faith, loss of purpose—or maybe just the custom designed multitude of the nagging insecurities and fears they’ve been carrying around since grade school and have never been able to shake.

As I looked at all these people, I wondered what kind of specific and personal hell they might be enduring, and it reminded me—so I’m reminding you:

Life is stunningly short and it is eggshell fragile.

Most people are having a really tough time.
They are almost always in more pain than you think they are.
Everyone is doing the very best they can to get through this day, and many are going through all manner of horrors in the process.
No one is immune from the invasive collateral damage of living.”

If you feel yourself about to act like a jerk, think to yourself how you would feel if someone acted like a jerk to you. Said another way, remind yourself of the good old Golden Rule and treat someone else as you would want to be treated. You have no idea what is going on in their life, so don’t add to their misery.

And if someone acts like a jerk to you, shake it off. They may be experiencing a huge crisis in their life.

We are all in this together so we’d better get along. We have a much bigger common enemy to focus on.

Grassley Once Again Refuses To Do His Job

Claims Kushner “Spooked” so committee shot its chance to interview him

I am not going to claim I know the details and nuances of laws and procedures for the investigative powers of congress. Like many, most of what I know comes from the Watergate investigations some 40+ years ago and what we have been told news media.

While investigative power for congress is not specified in the constitution, these powers have been determined to be implied in congress’ power to make laws. Along with the power to investigate comes the power to subpoena and compel testimony.

That background is needed to understand what a total bull shit move our own Senator Grassley has once again pulled in claiming that his Senate Judiciary Committee will not get an interview with presidential son-in-law Jared Kushner:

“Grassley said on Thursday Feinstein’s action “spooked” other potential witnesses, including Trump’s son-in-law and close adviser, Jared Kushner.

“As a result, it looks like our chances of getting a voluntary interview with Mr. Kushner have been shot,” Grassley said.

Feinstein disagreed. “I certainly haven’t heard that,” she told reporters at the Senate, explaining that Simpson’s associates had asked her to release that transcript to counteract what they considered misleading reporting.

According to a person familiar with the exchange, Kushner’s legal team did not decline an appearance with Senate Judiciary but asked for guidance on when committee members are allowed to disclose information.”

Grassley is blatantly trying to obstruct any real investigation. Once again he stops his committee from doing what is should do to do the thorough job that this matter needs. Grassley simply refuses to do his job yet again in what appears to be a vain attempt to protect Trump.

Your committee has subpoena power and can compel testimony, Mr. Grassley. Neither Iowans nor all other Americans are fooled by your claim that Mr. Kushner won’t testify in front of your committee. If he says he won’t then you send him an invitation he can’t refuse. You have the power.

Then you put him under oath and remind him that failure to testify will result in a contempt of congress citation and a possible stint in jail.

I am willing to bet if this investigation was about Hillary Clinton, you would marshall all the powers you could muster to compel testimony. You would then issue profound statements on the great harm that could be done to the republic if all powers of congress to investigate are not used.

Just close your eyes and pretend you are investigating Hillary Clinton if you have to.

Putting Iowans First

Image (1) iowa-senate-dems.jpg for post 36390

Focus On Improving Lives for Everyday Iowans

(From the Iowa Senate Democrats)

DES MOINES – Democratic lawmakers outlined their new plan today called Putting Iowans First.  The plan was developed by lawmakers to keep the 2018 session focused on improving the lives of everyday Iowans.

“Iowans don’t ask for much. They just want a decent paying job and the chance to lead a happy, healthy life. But we know today that too many Iowans who are working hard are just struggling to get by. Stagnant wages, rising health care costs, and fewer dollars going to job training and public education are hurting Iowa families,” said House Democratic Leader Mark Smith.

“Democrats believe it’s time to get back to the basics—to help improve Iowans’ everyday lives and give each of us opportunities to get ahead. Our Putting Iowans First plan focuses on better paying jobs, a great education, and affordable health care. Democrats believe that Iowa values include investing in Iowans. It’s a mistake to believe that the state can cut its way to prosperity,” said Senate Democratic Leader Janet Petersen.

The Putting Iowans First plan has four parts:

  1. Better-Paying Jobs
  2. A Revitalization of Small Towns and Rural Areas
  3. The Best Education in the Country
  4. A Quality of Life that Makes Iowa the #1 Best Place to Live

“It’s time to say goodbye to the back room deals and corporate tax giveaways. Our Putting Iowans First plan will bring the focus of our government back to improving the lives of everyday Iowans,” added Smith. “That means affordable job training and new recreational opportunities in rural areas. It means increasing the use of renewable fuels and investing in our public schools again to produce a highly skilled workforce. It also means expanding access to affordable health care.”

The full plan can be found at http://iowansfirst.com.

Comment:

One of the major differences between promises made by Democrats and promises made by Republicans is that the Democrats make promises they intend to keep. They are not a guise to get elected followed by a bait and switch such as we have seen in the last couple years here in Iowa.

I can’t remember what Republicans promised to get elected in 2016 but it sure wasn’t the crushing of unions, the voter suppression, the privatization of Medicaid that was left to stand and the cutback in school funding that is now a hallmark of all Republican led legislatures.

If you want policies that include all Iowans in the mix you’d better plan to vote for Democrats this fall.
