Claims Kushner “Spooked” so committee shot its chance to interview him
I am not going to claim I know the details and nuances of laws and procedures for the investigative powers of congress. Like many, most of what I know comes from the Watergate investigations some 40+ years ago and what we have been told news media.
While investigative power for congress is not specified in the constitution, these powers have been determined to be implied in congress’ power to make laws. Along with the power to investigate comes the power to subpoena and compel testimony.
That background is needed to understand what a total bull shit move our own Senator Grassley has once again pulled in claiming that his Senate Judiciary Committee will not get an interview with presidential son-in-law Jared Kushner:
“Grassley said on Thursday Feinstein’s action “spooked” other potential witnesses, including Trump’s son-in-law and close adviser, Jared Kushner.
“As a result, it looks like our chances of getting a voluntary interview with Mr. Kushner have been shot,” Grassley said.
Feinstein disagreed. “I certainly haven’t heard that,” she told reporters at the Senate, explaining that Simpson’s associates had asked her to release that transcript to counteract what they considered misleading reporting.
According to a person familiar with the exchange, Kushner’s legal team did not decline an appearance with Senate Judiciary but asked for guidance on when committee members are allowed to disclose information.”
Grassley is blatantly trying to obstruct any real investigation. Once again he stops his committee from doing what is should do to do the thorough job that this matter needs. Grassley simply refuses to do his job yet again in what appears to be a vain attempt to protect Trump.
Your committee has subpoena power and can compel testimony, Mr. Grassley. Neither Iowans nor all other Americans are fooled by your claim that Mr. Kushner won’t testify in front of your committee. If he says he won’t then you send him an invitation he can’t refuse. You have the power.
Then you put him under oath and remind him that failure to testify will result in a contempt of congress citation and a possible stint in jail.
I am willing to bet if this investigation was about Hillary Clinton, you would marshall all the powers you could muster to compel testimony. You would then issue profound statements on the great harm that could be done to the republic if all powers of congress to investigate are not used.
Just close your eyes and pretend you are investigating Hillary Clinton if you have to.
