2019 Iowa Senate Democratic Committee Assignments

DES MOINES– Senate Democratic Leader Janet Petersen released committee assignments today for Democratic State Senators for the 2019 session of the Iowa Legislature.

“Democratic Senators are committed to working with the Governor and Republican legislators on issues where we can find common ground over the next two years, especially ensuring Iowans have access to affordable health care and better-paying job opportunities,” Petersen said.  “However, if Republicans continue pushing an agenda that hurts the health care, education and pocketbooks of working Iowans, we will be fierce in our opposition.”

The 88th General Assembly will begin on Monday, January 14, 2019.

Join Indivisible Day Of Action

Important update from Indivisible.  Find your local group if you are not yet connected.

Join our day of action on the first day of the next Congress.

In just a few weeks, the 116th Congress will be sworn in.

The first 100 days of any new Congress or administration is a crucial period where our newly-elected members of Congress (MoCs) define their agenda and identify their priorities to set the stage for the next two years.

When Indivisibles helped build the blue wave that took over the House, we set the stage for the opportunity to influence that agenda. You elected them into these positions because you believe they can bring change. That’s exactly why we must flex our movement’s muscle from day one — January 3, 2019.

Leverage works when you use it.

On January 3, we take what Trump and Republicans prioritized for the first two years — gutting healthcare, deregulating Wall Street, criminalizing immigrants and refugees — and flip it on its axis.

We created the Indivisible on Offense Guide to lead you through some of the new powers of the Democratically-controlled House. Our goal, as Indivisibles, is that we want them to use their power to actively fight for us. Even our friendly Democratic MoCs need a nudge from time to time. To make sure they listen and follow through, we need to tell our MoCs exactly what we expect of them from Day 1. A good ask is:

  • Specific. Asks are about prompting an action we want our MoCs to take. So your ask should be time-bound and precise.
  • Strategic. We want to achieve something. If your MoC follows through on your ask, what will be accomplished? So you might want to ask them to cosponsor a specific bill, rather than just making a speech on an issue which might not accomplish anything.
  • Seeable. Look, MoCs can be really crafty. They’re politicians (yes, the Democrats, too)! Trust but always verify. If the action you’re asking for cannot be observed and verified, you will not be able to hold your MoCs accountable for following through. You can do this by checking to see how they voted, watching a video of a hearing, and you can ask to see letters they’ve sent.

As a majority in the house, Democrats will have a range of tools that you can and should ask them to use in order to advance progressive policies, continue to play defense, and hold the Trump Administration accountable. Here are the kinds of asks you’ll be making of your new, Democratic MoCs (and if you still have a Republican MoC, the original Indivisible Guide is still your BFF):

  1. Use their vote. This is exactly how we were able to put pressure on our MoCs for the past two years. Remind them that their vote has the power to represent thousands of people who care about how they vote. And we’ll be watching exactly how they use that vote!
  2. Cosponsor legislation. MoCs should cosponsor progressive bills that they want to see move forward.
  3. Introduce legislation. Any MoC can do this, and the only way we can bring change is to bring it to the table!
  4. Use oversight authority, including investigation and subpoenas. MoCs have an obligation to responsibly use their oversight authority to hold the Trump Administration accountable.
  5. Write letters to the administration demanding answers. Letters can be easily ignored. But now that Democrats have control of the House, the administration will pay more attention because they can easily be escalated from a letter to a question at a public hearing.
  6. Leverage procedural tools to slow the Republican agenda. Republicans still control the Senate, but that doesn’t mean we are powerless to stop them. Procedural tools like filibuster can slow their agenda down.
  7. Join a caucus. Caucuses are groups that MoCs join on the basis of either their values or issues that are important to them.
  8. Publicly urge leadership to give greater attention to an issue. Giving floor speeches, giving a platform to affected communities, and publicly calling out leadership for not prioritizing an issue are all ways that MoCs can hold their own leadership accountable.

Read even more about the specific kinds of asks you’ll be making of the 116th Congress here! And remember that your leverage (as voters and as constituents) only works, if you’re willing to use it. The same goes for your new MoCs. Their new power as a majority only works if they’re willing to use it and show their constituents that they are here to listen.

Whose House? Our House!

So in the first 100 days, we want to show our power as Indivisibles to let our new MoCs know that we’re not slowing down. Indivisible groups all over the country will come together to show up at district offices on January 3 to say: we’re here, we’re paying attention, and we’ll hold you accountable for what you do.

Here’s how to get started:

  1. Plan your January 3 day of action event. We put together a Whose House, Our House! toolkit for the day of action with everything you’ll need to make your events successful.
  2. Sign up for our Jan 3 planning webinar. Join the Indivisible Organizing Team to find out some of the best practices for planning and executing successful day of action events. We’ll also have more information on the first 100 days and how you can get involved.
  3. Register your event. Sign up here to register your day of action event, so we can put it on our map for other people in your area to attend.
  4. Get your Whose House? Our House! Merch. Get your merch early for your day of action event and show up repping your new Indivisible gear!

It’s time for us to take back our democracy and continue to push back on this administration from day one. Get ready, and get excited to flex your progressive power.

In solidarity,
The Indivisible Team

In Case You Missed It – Randy Rainbow’s Latest

Imagine trying to drive down the interstate at 70 MPH and this comes on the radio. Almost had to pull over I was laughing so hard.

And I laugh more each time I hear it.

Sunday Funday: Long Winter’s Night Edition

Image (2) Santa_Claus-and-snowman-253x300.png for post 32346

The quiz is usually written on Friday afternoon. This used to be a fairly good time to put a quiz about weekly news happenings together because seldom did anything of import happen after Friday morning. Now in the time of Dear Leader anything that is timely can’t be written too far ahead. Even a day old makes it look like ancient history these days. So questions on the big news of the day – indictments from Mueller and the reaction will unfortunately be missing

With that in mind we bring you this important news. Due to the axial tilt of the planet that brings us the change in seasons and a wobble therein (or so I have been told) we are in the midst of the earliest nightfall of the year. This will continue until next Thursday, Dec. 13th. Dec. 13th is Santa Lucia Day, Lucia is a derivative of the Latin word for light, lux. So those who made up the ancient calendars were really on the ball on tracking the cycles of the sun. You would think it was really important to them.

Things just get more and more – uh – goofy?

  1. Elections have been over for a month, but two remain undecided. Results in North Carolina are being held up because of what?
  1. The other result being held up is in Maine where a recount is under way because of what new way of voting is in place and the previous count is contested?
  1. George HW Bush died last Saturday. Among many positions he held was that of ‘Head Spook’ meaning he held what position?
  1. Kid Rock lost his gig as Grand Marshall of the Nashville Christmas Parade after he called what TV personality a “bitch”?
  1. Confusion seemed to reign after Dear Leader claimed he had new trade deal with what country while that country claimed there was no such deal?
  1. What company announced it would deploy “autonomous janitors” in 360 of its stores?
  1. Speaking of jobs, what CEO appeared before a congressional committee to discuss impending plant closings?
  1. In the Russia investigation, what important figure got a recommendation of no jail time last week?
  1. Many of the stories about George HW Bush noted he signed the Americans with Disabilities Act. Who originally introduced this bill into congress?
  1. What Republican senator in an editorial stated the GOP should stop nominating judges with ‘questionable track records on race’?
  1. What political organization recently reported its emails had been hacked during the midterms?
  1. What sports governing body filed for bankruptcy last week?
  1. Fallout from a sex scandal involving children in South Florida is threatening to engulf what cabinet member?
  1. Naturalist Sir David Attenborough told a UN Climate Summit in Katowice, Poland that what is on the horizon?
  1. Iowa’s Chuck Grassley let it be known that he would appear with only what candidate before the Iowa caucuses?
  1. What country announced that it would leave OPEC in January?
  1. The “Yellow Vest Movement” is a protest taking place in what country?
  1. In Severance, Colorado 9 year old Dane Best persuaded the town council to end the ban on what?
  1. A housekeeper at a golf course owned by Dear Leader has outed herself as being what?
  1. Former President Barack Obama met with what 2 rising stars in the Democratic Party in the past week?

John Fugelsang

And that’s just from Melania.”

Andy Borowitz:

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report)—“Pushing back against criticism of her lack of diplomatic experience, Donald J. Trump’s choice to be the next United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Heather Nauert, said on Friday that a memorable visit to the “It’s a Small World” ride at Disney World made her eminently qualified for the U.N. post.

“When people look at me, they think Heather Nauert, former Fox News anchor,” Nauert told reporters at the State Department. “What they don’t realize is I’m also Heather Nauert, who went on ‘It’s a Small World’ three times when she was nine.”

From Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez: Is Everybody Here?

Image (1) labor-movement.jpg for post 17588Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

@Ocasio2018

Right now Freshman members of Congress are at a “Bipartisan” orientation w/ briefings on issues.

Invited panelists offer insights to inform new Congressmembers‘ views as they prepare to legislate.

# of Corporate CEOs we’ve listened to here: 4

# of Labor leaders: 0

64.6K

11:42 AM – Dec 6, 2018

I think Ms. Cortez has noticed a real problem! Not mentioned is the number of environmentalists was also a big zero! This is about two weeks after an absolutely frightening environmental report was released by a very reluctant administration.

From commondreams.org:

“Pulling back the curtain on the ostensibly “bipartisan” orientation for newly elected members of Congress at Harvard’s Kennedy School in Boston, Reps.-elect Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) and Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) informed the public through live social media updates on Thursday that—contrary to the ideologically neutral advertising—the private conference featured a heavy dose of speeches by corporate CEOs and completely shut out organized labor and members of the progressive community.

“Our ‘bipartisan’ congressional orientation is co-hosted by a corporate lobbyist group,” Ocasio-Cortez noted, likely referring to the Koch-funded American Enterprise Institute, which is co-sponsoring the event. “Other members have quietly expressed to me their concern that this wasn’t told to us in advance. Lobbyists are here. Goldman Sachs is here. Where’s labor? Activists? Frontline community leaders?”

Why Iowans Need To Follow What Happens In Wisconsin

Image (1) WI-Capitol.jpg for post 9187

protests in state capitols don’t stop Republican power grabs

This will be a very short post. Just want to make certain that Iowans understand that we must keep an eye on what is happening in states like Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and even Kansas.

The time when our state legislatures were somewhat isolated from each other and focused on business that pertained mostly to our state. Since the so-called “Reagan Revolution” and especially since Bush II, Republicans have had a strategy of changing the country by changing state laws. They are driven by a kind of messianic devotion to the rightness of their cause, so it is win by any means necessary.

What it means for Iowa is that what is going on in other states where Republicans have control of all branches of government will be happening here soon enough. So when you see Wisconsin stripping the powers of an incoming governor of the opposite party, expect something similar in Iowa.

Kansas once had a crazy governor who bled the state dry with tax cuts for the rich. The state became a disaster. Iowa Republicans thought that was the thing to do, so we are now doing the same.

No doubt we can expect our legislature to follow in the paths of those states who have “updated” their state workers’ pensions, even though Iowa has one of the soundest systems in the country.

With Republicans governing these days al the norms of governance go out the window. Changing laws in lame duck sessions that hinder the incoming government basically negates democracy. This is the stuff that single party rule is made of.

Ari Melber discusses Wisconsin on twitter:

Wisconsin Republicans are undercutting a core premise of our democracy — that the people leaving office have an obligation to transfer their powers peacefully and professionally. This is not normal.

My new @washingtonpost piece:

Perspective | What it means for democracy if losers of elections don’t relinquish power

Wisconsin Republicans are damaging the rule of law, even if their actions may be technically ‘legal.’

“Medicare For All” Could Save Trillions

54 minutes – great analysis

Have I ever mentioned that if you watch or listen to mainstream media you miss a lot or are easily misinformed on reality? Yep it happens quite often. That may account for much of America believing that Hillary Clinton was somehow involved in multiple international conspiracies while Donald Trump is a simple man with only the good of Americans in his heart. Heck, after these last few days you might come to think that George HW Bush was a really good president and person.

News and views are often reported or skipped based on the outlook of the owners of the the media outlet. Most owners of media outlets in this country are owned by very conservative people or corporations. Therefore much of what runs on mainstream media supports their conservative world view.

Few policies have been more reviled by conservatives over the decades as some form of universal health care. The US is the only major economy that does not have universal health care. That puts us some 60+ years behind the rest of the world. The various attempts that have been attempted to universalize at least some portion of the medical system have been top targets for special interest driven politicians.

Ten years ago our medical system was at the center of our national election. The attempted fix was watered down by Republicans at the time it passed congress – thanks in large part to Chuck Grassley – and has been hammered at in every way possible by Republicans as the party of the special interests. They were successful enough that 10 years later the medical system is once more at the center of elections.

Promises of reform of the medical system were at the heart of a crushing Democratic victory in the off year elections last month.

A couple of weeks ago the Political Economy Research Institute at the University of Massachusetts produced an analysis of the real costs of Medicare For All  compared to our current system. A conservative estimate of the savings is about $500 billion per year for the first decade. The video above discusses where the savings are along with how the pitfalls will be addressed.

Common Dreams website has a great story concerning the savings. They are real and achievable.

“According to the 200-page analysis of Sen. Bernie Sanders’ (I-Vt.) Medicare for All Act of 2017, the researchers found that “based on 2017 U.S. healthcare expenditure figures, the cumulative savings for the first decade operating under Medicare for All would be $5.1 trillion, equal to 2.1 percent of cumulative GDP, without accounting for broader macroeconomic benefits such as increased productivity, greater income equality, and net job creation through lower operating costs for small- and medium-sized businesses.”

The most significant sources of savings from Medicare for All, the researchers found, would come in the areas of pharmaceutical drug costs and administration.

In a statement, Pollin said his research makes abundantly clear that the moral imperative of guaranteeing decent healthcare for all does not at all conflict with the goal of providing cost-effective care.

“The most fundamental goals of Medicare for All are to significantly improve healthcare outcomes for everyone living in the United States while also establishing effective cost controls throughout the healthcare system,” Pollin said. “These two purposes are both achievable.”

As with a change in any system, there will be challenges and hurdles but they can be surmounted.

If there is one sector that should be on board with a move to some form of universal heal care, especially to a system that already exists, is American industry. One cost they must bear that their competitors across the globe do not is the cost of providing health care to their workers. While American industry would still be paying for health care in a sense it would be a standard price that would remain fairly stable through their taxes.

And yes, taxes would go up, but you would no longer be paying premiums either through your paycheck or on your own. Nor would you be paying things like medical insurance on your auto policies.

It would all be rolled into one package for everybody. No more Medicaid, no more Children’s Health. Everybody covered. No 10% to 20% not covered. Much less paperwork for doctors. Medication prices could be negotiated by the very large health system.

As noted there may be some bumps rolling such a system out, but much of it is already working across the country. Let’s not get bogged down in the details in finally bringing the US into the 20th – I mean 21st – century.

Sinclair Must-See Segments Intended To Create Fear And Influence Elections

Have you ever thought about what it would take to make you want to run out of the United States on foot to Canada taking nothing more than what you could carry?  And what if you had only flip flops for shoes or no shoes at all?  We in the United States can’t even imagine it. What circumstances would be bad enough to make you not only think about fleeing the country, but actually do it?

News stories do not tend to focus on what exactly is going on that is causing people to run for their lives.  It’s always, “oh look at the violence and drama going on at the border!”  Looping video of people running, American soldiers, making it look like a war scene.  Then little to no information laying out what the circumstances are that are causing people to choose to flee their country on foot.

And that’s the mainstream media.  The right wing propaganda outlets show pretty much the same pictures and video. But they use the scene to stir up fear and anger in viewers by calling people fleeing for their lives an “invasion.”  Now we not only have right wing radio blanketing the publicly owned airwaves around the country and in Iowa, Sinclair Broadcasting has taken over the parallel television markets, and their corporate CEO is requiring local stations to broadcast right wing narratives.

###

from Media Matters for America:

Sinclair Broadcasting, an arm of the right wing propaganda machine, focusing on swing states in rural America is characterizing a large group of poor, desperate, barefoot families  running for their lives as an “invasion.”  Sinclair’s latest “must-run” defends tear-gassing migrant children, warns of an “attempted invasion”

Sinclair’s Boris Epshteyn: “The fact of the matter is that this is an attempted invasion of our country. Period.”

On November 26, Sinclair chief political analyst and former Trump aide Boris Epshteyn released a new “must-run” segment for the company that defended the use of tear gas on these families and attempted to stoke fear, saying the group of migrants is “attempting to storm” the border in an “attempted invasion of our country.”

Charlie Cook: Iowa Likely To Lean Republican In 2020

Iowa will still lean Republican in 2020 according to Charlie Cook despite flipping congressional seats from 3 Rs/1 Dem; to 3 Dems/1 R in 2018.

“What were the three states that made the difference in 2016? Wisconsin, Michigan, Pennsylvania. What happened this time? Dems easily held onto a senate seat and captured the governor’s race in Michigan; Dems easily held onto the senate and captured the governors race in Wisconsin; and easily won both the senate and governor’s race in Pennsylvania…so Democrats’ problems in ’16 maybe they won’t be quite as bad in 2020.”

More on Iowa Press from Charlie Cook.  His most interesting comment came right at the end as they ran out of time so there was no time for him to elaborate. “I don’t know if our system allows the elevation of great leaders so much anymore.”
