Support A Red Flag Law: Call Joni Ernst Today

Message from Lisette Johnson:

10 years ago, my husband shot me four times and tried to kill me. As I ran from the house he shot me one final time before fatally shooting himself. My 12-year-old daughter and 10-year-old son were also in the house. Decades of control and verbal abuse culminated in that moment. His abusive behavior escalated when I told him I wanted to leave. His threats to kill me became real because he had access to a gun. He was a risk to me, to our children, and to himself. My family desperately needed a Red Flag law to keep us safe.

A Red Flag law is near and dear to me because it could have prevented what hapened to me and my kids. It’s too late to change what happened, but it’s not too late for the millions of other Americans who are at risk of gun violence every day:

The Senate Judiciary Committee is holding a hearing on Red Flag laws on March 26. With a quick few-minute phone call, you can voice your support for a Red Flag law on the federal level that will help protect us ALL from gun violence.

CALL YOUR SENATORS AND URGE SUPPORT FOR A RED FLAG LAW

After the shooting, I was in critical condition for almost 24 hours, and was in the surgical trauma intensive care unit for nearly two weeks. Through this experience, and through my recovery, I understood how deadly the relationship between violence against women and access to guns can be. Through my advocacy work to protect survivors of domestic violence, I learned that 4.5 million American women alive today have been threatened with a gun by an intimate partner. And by working with these survivors and our elected officials, I believe a Red Flag law could help keep them safe from their abusers.  I’m calling on you to help in this fight by calling your senators right now, and urging them to support a Red Flag law on the federal level.

Thank you for standing with me.

If you or someone you know is experiencing domestic violence, call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233, available 24/7, for confidential assistance from a trained advocate.

If you or a loved one has been personally impacted by gun violence (including having witnessed an act of gun violence, been threatened by a gun, wounded by a gun, or had someone they loved wounded or killed by a gun, unintentional shooting incidents, suicide by gun, and domestic violence involving a firearm), be sure to learn more about our Survivor Network, where we support and empower survivors to share their stories, honor the lives of their loved ones, and take action to spare other families from this pain.

Red Flag laws can save lives by preventing gun tragedies before they happen. Lisette’s story demonstrates why we need a Red Flag law on the federal level. Red Flag laws empower family members and law enforcement officers to petition a court to temporarily restrict a person’s access to guns when they pose a risk of using them to harm themselves or others. Simply put, they’re an evidence-based solution that works.

Tomorrow March 26, the Senate Judiciary Committee will hold a hearing on Red Flag laws. Give your Senators an urgent call asking them to support a Red Flag law on the federal level!

Thanks for doing your part to support Red Flag laws.

A Guide To Trumpspeak And Bring Back The Fairness Doctrine

I do not like putting a Trump image on our blog, but I saw this meme on Bring Back The Fairness Doctrine’s Facebook page and it is a good illustration of how things are.

Trump came to power because we have a dysfunctional media system.  And he is remaining in power for the same reason. Disinformation abounds. The right wing propaganda machine in the form of Fox News, Trumpspeak, and conservative radio brainwashes a large number of ordinary but susceptible people making it impossible to govern because there is no longer a shared reality among Americans.

How will we ever get out of this?

There used to be a media reform movement in this country. I know, because I was a part of it.  I spoke on a panel on the topic How to Challenge a Broadcast License at the National Conference on Media Reform in 2007 in Memphis.  These national media reform conferences took place every other year and were sponsored by FreePress. They were a very big deal, attended by thousands of activists and all kinds of celebs.  I have no idea what happened, but they are no longer a thing.  As far as I can tell they came to a sudden stop without any warning, explanation or fanfare. The last one was in 2013 in Denver.

It is extremely unfortunate that the vibrant, strong media reform movement that culminated in this biennial conference, so very necessary today, no longer exists.

In any event, there are still a few folks floating around here and there who understand that Trump is president today because of our messed up media system and they are doing their best to keep something going no matter how small and humble.  So if you would like to conspire with others who feel the right wing propaganda machine, namely Fox News, and in general corporate media, are ruining our democracy, and that we need to change our media ways as a country, these groups are as good a place as any to start.

Unions Must Strengthen To Restore America’s Middle Class

There is little that is more illustrative of what has caused the fall of America’s middle class than the graphs that show the fall in union membership alongside a graph that shows the fall in worker’s pay. It is an almost exact one to one correlation.

Robert Reich has a short video that does a great job of explaining how unions are necessary.

As income and wealth inequality becomes larger the bad effects on society multiply. More and more we see laws that favor the wealthy and hurt the less well off. We also see the blocking of laws that would be considered good for all of society.

One example that comes immediately to mind in this state is education. The Republican Party, acting as the representatives of wealth, keep budgeting for public schools in Iowa as low as they can and still get re-elected. At they same time they are working hard to syphon off as much of that public money to private concerns through school vouchers and other tricks.

Another is the control of most people’s health care by employers. Many cling to their jobs for fear of losing their health care. Meanwhile Republicans in state and national legislatures refuse to do anything that will untie the employer – health care entanglement that helps keep employees tied to their jobs.

Unions with strength of numbers could really help make situations such as the above less likely. Of course the unions top concerns would be wages and working conditions.

We need to hear from Democratic candidates what they will be doing to strengthen unions and thus conditions for the millions of America’s workers.

Sunday Funday: Shrinkage Edition

Normally this would be my “high holy days of basketball” post. However, a couple of things happened last week that were so funny, they must be discussed.

The first is the Twitter tale of free speechin’ Devin Nunes and his Mom and his Cow. Nunes has been the butt of twitter parody accounts Devin Nunes Mom and Devin Nunes Cow for quite a while. Neither of these parody accounts had little following until Monday or so when Nunes could take it no longer. So he sued Twitter and is looking to sue the Mom and the Cow.

When some member of the press got ahold of this and made it public, nothing could have been better publicity especially for the Cow. And away it went. Last I saw Devin Nunes Cow had far surpassed Devin Nunes in followers with well over half a million last I saw.

Nunes once made a bit of news when he defended the rights of people to shout the “N” word at Congressman John Lewis. Yet he can’t take a little jab in the rib from Mom and Cow. Cowabunga, dude!.

The other story is that of Dear Leader’s border fence around Tijuana. Never posted a twitter thread so here we go. Trevor Noah is pretty self explanatory on what happened:

In retail, theft of product is called “shrinkage.”

  1. Sexual charges against what media star/ astrophysicist came up empty so he can return to his jobs?
  1. Flood waters caused a nuclear power plant to close near what major midwestern city?
  1. Dear Leader once again stepped where he shouldn’t have when he recognized Israeli sovereignty over what long disputed territory?
  1. Republican legislators in what state are trying to limit a referendum that restores ex-felon’s right to vote in what state?
  1. On a party line vote trumpublicans in Iowa’s senate passed a bill requiring that Medicaid recipients do what?
  1. Even though most felt this senator was already running for president, who officially announced a run Sunday for the Democratic nomination?
  1. Dear Leader opened up a running battle with what dead person?
  1. What Republican senators boldly stepped forward to defend the person Dear Leader was attacking?
  1. Brexit, have you ever seen such a mess? What happens March 29th?
  1. In a move considered medically unsafe and unsound, Kentucky’s Governor Matt Bevins exposed his children to what disease?
  1. Former VP Joe Biden has been reportedly discussed having what southern politician as his VP running mate?
  1. Iowa had an election for a vacant state senate seat Tuesday. Did the Republican or the Democrat win?
  1. In the wake of the Boeing crashes what regulatory agency is coming under fire for delegating their oversight duties to the companies themselves?
  1. Who has acknowledged through attorneys using personal email accounts for government business?
  1. What business advisor for Dear Leader will be testifying before two House committees next week?
  1. A judge in what state invalidated lame duck laws passed to disempower the next governor in what state?
  1. The AG of what state sued the Catholic Church concerning how the church handled sex abuse in that state?
  1. What Iowan was rebuked when he used a negative comparison to New Orleans Katrina experience to show Iowans were better responding to floods?
  1. Cyclone Idai devastated what part of the world last week?
  1. For the second year in a row, what country has been chosen as the happiest?

From lgbtq nation:

The Alabama senate just unanimously voted for a bill that would get rid of marriage licenses because some judges in the state don’t want to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.

If the bill is signed into law, Alabama would be the only state where a marriage license would not generally be required to get married.

Instead, couples would get a form to fill out from the state and present that form or an affidavit to a probate judge, who would then record the marriage.

What I said many years ago – if you don’t want gays to get married, get rid of marriage!

Answers:

  1. Neil DeGrasse Tyson
  1. Omaha, Nebraska
  1. The Golan Heights
  1. Florida – republicans once again trying to override the people.
  1. Work – which many already do.
  1. Kristen Gillibrand
  1. John McCain – McCain is definitely winning.
  1. Johnny Isaacson of Georgia and. – well no one else. (Ernst squeaked some mild disapproval that she hopes Dear leader won’t hear about)
  1. Well, as of now that is still scheduled as the official Brexit date.
  1. Chicken pox
  1. Stacey Abrams
  1. The Democrat by a 57 to 42 margin
  1. The FAA
  1. Jared and Ivanka – that’s like crime #100 they have committed
  1. Felix Sater
  1. Wisconsin
  1. West Virginia
  1. Steve King!
  1. South east Africa – Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Malawi – perhaps the worst cyclone in the Southern Hemisphere ever.
  1. Finland

As this is happening, Republicans in the Iowa legislature are pushing hard for a constitutional amendment to make guns even more sacrosanct in Iowa. From a weekly newsletter from my local rep, Dave Kerr:

“While most bills that come through the House are noncontroversial, there are times when the votes are sharply divided by party. This week the House and Senate restarted the process to ensure Iowans’ Second Amendment freedoms are enshrined in the state Constitution for future generations.

Iowa is one of only six states that doesn’t already have Second Amendment protections in its Constitution.  House Republicans believe it is long overdue that Iowa joins the 44 other states with this language in the Constitution. The proposed amendment is simple and easy to understand.  It reads:

“The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. The sovereign state of Iowa affirms and recognizes this right to be a fundamental individual right. Any and all restrictions of this right shall be subject to strict scrutiny.”

This amendment recognizes that Iowans have a fundamental, individual right to protect themselves, their families, and their liberty.  It requires that the highest level of judicial review be applied to any government restriction on that right, just like other fundamental rights.”

I see nothing in there about my rights to live. I see nothing about responsibility.

Guns, when used as intended, kill. That is their purpose. As such they should be engineered with safety in mind much as cars, which have other purposes but can kill when used irresponsibly, are. As many, I am old enough to remember when the auto industry fought any safety features such as seat belts and air bags.

As with all gun talk these days the leading preamble of the second amendment is conveniently omitted. “A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State,” Where is that clause?

This is being played out with a background of Americans watch as New Zealand responds to a horrible slaughter of innocents with laws that will allow people to continue to own guns, but not to turn themselves into a small army. Sensible laws.

As usual in America we are only days from the next mass murder.

keep iowa courts fair

Issues:

On a party line vote, Senate Republicans passed a bill that would inject politics into our court system and put politicans in charge of selecting judges. It’s a terrible idea and we’ve got to stop it.

Right now, the bill is stuck in the House because it doesn’t have enough votes to pass.  But we’ve got work to do to keep it that way.  The special interests are working overtime to get this power grab passed and pack the courts to push through their right wing agenda to end same sex marriage and stop women from making their own decisions.

Please contact your state representative today and encourage them to vote NO on Senate File 237.

GOP’s Sunshine Tax

The Iowa Senate has approved another bill to add a sunshine tax on Iowa homeowners and businesses who have installed solar energy.  Their plan would raise taxes on solar customers by about $300 per year and would stifle the solar energy industry in Iowa, which employs about 800 people.  The bill is being pushed by special interest groups who already have a monopoly on the energy market in Iowa.

You can read more about this here.

Please contact your lawmakers and ask them to vote NO on SF 583/HF 669.

Bill Watch

Below is a list of bills we’re tracking this session that may be of interest to you.  As session continues, we’ll be updating this list for you to keep you up to speed on the legislative process and take action.

One issue that I do not see on the list is an issue that is hot in Republican circles these days: Forcing Medicaid recipients to work.

This is simply a crazy idea and is some sort of punishment for being poor, I guess. Most Medicaid recipients already work, but their pay is too low to allow them to pay for insurance.

A much better bill would be one that made employers pay wages that would allow employees be able to afford the basic necessities of life, including access to health care.

An even better bill would be to make health care available to all, regardless of their station in life.

This will only add more costs to a system that is overloaded with costs now and is functioning extremely poorly in Iowa.

Ernst Town Hall Meetings In Williamsburg, Burlington Friday and Saturday

There should be major protests at every one of her town hall meetings in Iowa for her pathetic support of Trump, the NRA, and her complete abandonment of regular Iowans.  She is a huge part of the problem.  These events are nothing more than positive,  free media to promote herself. Of course, few of the stops in her “99 county tour” are actually open to the public. Many are closed meetings with local Republicans or big ag representatives, etc.  If you can, attend one of her public meetings. Ask follow-up questions. Get video.

Mid American Trying To Squash Iowa’s Solar Industry

Stop SF 583 Mid American Energy Bill

State Senator Joe Bolkcom:

“As solar systems have been deployed the state of Iowa has had progressive policy in this area. This legislation that is being brought by Mid American Energy is an attempt to squash this industry so that they can be in charge and own all the power generation in Iowa.

It’s really important for people who want to see more solar development in Iowa contact their state representatives and senators and tell them to oppose this unnecessary effort by Mid American Energy and these large utilities to take over the solar business in Iowa and essentially kill jobs and kill businesses.

Looks like this bill passed the senate today. Watch this video then contact your state rep.  While you are at it, send a copy of your letter to your local newspaper.
