Do You Remember April 3, 2009?

Image (1) gay-couple.jpg for post 2494

To my recollection, it was a warmish Friday morning. First thing in the morning I go to do my ablutions. Part of the routine is to turn on the radio, get the news and comment to start the day. Radio choice was NPR in those days.

Obama had been in office a couple of months. The world was on the brink of what might become the worst depression ever. Every day was another litany of depressing economic news. It was a frightening world then.

So the first news of the day was a shocker. The Iowa Supreme Court unanimously (UNANIMOUSLY!) voted that Iowa’s marriage laws were unconstitutional since they discriminated against gay couples.

Well, boy let me tell you you don’t want to hear something like that with your mouth full of toothpaste. While cleaning up, I listened very closely. Yep that was what the man said. The news was followed by analysis. Most of the analysis went something like “This one is hard to believe, but out in Iowa……..”

So in a state of fog I called a close friend. When she answered instead of saying “hello” she said “Yes, it is true!” I responded “Really? Are you sure?” She said “Yes!” I am sure I must have said something back, but all I remember was that we both had a short little happy cry and then gurgled a “good bye.”

I spent the rest of the day reading and wondering. I was wondering just how the crazy right wing, those who want to control our thoughts and bodies, would respond to this obvious affront to their control. Most likely their response would be way over the top.

We then went to the Old Capitol in the afternoon. We figured that if there would be celebrating that is where it would happen. And it did. Can’t remember what exactly went on that night. Just a lot of people being very friendly to each other. And smiles, so many smiles everywhere I looked. Another group of humans were just elevated to the status of human.

The next morning we went to a legislative forum nearby. Every Democrat I saw had a smile. I talked to my state senator. Told him we had gone to Iowa City to celebrate the previous night. Told him neither me nor my wife caught “the gay” from anyone. He roared.

Well, that was ten years ago next Wednesday.

Ten years later, revenge is still going on.

I was right about the fringe right wing. Led by Bob Vander Plaats, they plotted out a strategy to get back at those Supreme Court justices. Their strategy to start with was to push to get them voted out of office. They won round one taking out 3 justices in the retention vote, including Chief Justice Marsha Thurness.

If I recall correctly, the second and third retention votes did not remove any other justices. Therefore their revenge was unfulfilled. They needed a new strategy.

Now that strategy is being rammed through the far right Republican legislature. The plan is to take Iowa’s much admired justice appointment system, trash it and replace it with one where they believe they will basically be in charge of appointing justices that will do their bidding.

Iowa’s judicial appointment system is usually cited as the model for the country in doing the best that can be done in removing as much partisan politics as possible. So, some 10 years later, as the radical far right dismantles this system and turns Iowa’s judiciary into another cesspool of partisanship, you have to really wonder what a super motivator hate can be.

But ten years later marriage equality is the law of the land. Most people accept it. Most people are either related to a gay person or know at least one. Letting every person have the right to share their lives and possessions with whomever they choose seems fair to most people.

Sunday Funday: Who’s A Fool Edition

Alternative Math

Guess what tomorrow is? Yep it is the day for fools. For some reason I am betting that many reading this will have the same person in mind as the biggest fool. That would no doubt be Dear Leader. I am, however, proposing another set of folks who should share the title together.

I will not fault those who voted for Dear Leader the first time, although they out this country in a real hole. It is the folks who voted for him once and intend to vote for him again. Are you paying attention at all? He wants to take away your healthcare, your Medicaid, your Medicare. Does that mean anything to you?  What you will get in return is the Trump University version of health care. You pay in and get nothing. Good luck suing with the courts packed with Dear Leader buddies.

Anyone who is still backing Dear Leader is a true fool. Dear Leader will crash your world at some point. Women especially who back Trump are mystifying. He treats women like dirt, except for Ivanka.

Speaking of fooling people, do you think anyone will ever see the REAL Mueller Report? My guess is no. They will be placed right next to Dear Leader’s financial reports never to be seen.

Here we go:

  1. How many pages is that Mueller report?
  1. What once rising star in the legal world was charged with trying to extort $20 million from Nike?
  1. Radical presidential action time! What is Dear Leader threatening to do next week on our southern border?
  1. What administration official has been using millions of our tax dollars to hire a Republican media consulting firm to burnish her image?
  1. Betsy DeVos had a good week. In a hearing in the House Wednesday she had to defend proposed zeroing out the budget of what popular program?
  1. Thursday how did Dear Leader respond to DeVos’ defense of the zero budget for that program?
  1. At a campaign rally in Michigan, Dear Leader said he would reinstate the budget for what Michigan rehabilitation funds?
  1. Really bad reviews coming in for what nominee to the Federal Reserve Board?
  1. In a real surprise in Chicago, felony charges were dropped against what actor who allegedly faked a hate crime attack?
  1. The Wall survives! The House failed to override Dear Leader’s veto coming up about how many votes short?
  1. Who was Speaker Pelosi talking about this week when she stated “His words can not be trusted.”? Adding that “We have to see the full report.”
  1. The family that owns Krispy Kreme Doughnuts and other businesses gave millions to unspecified charities after learning their family was deeply involved with what political regime?
  1. Once described as a “coffee boy” by Dear Leader, what convicted felon has formally applied for a pardon from Dear Leader?
  1. What country shot down one of its own satellites with a missile and then declared itself established as a space power?
  1. Feeling his oats from Barr’s summary letter, Dear Leader lobbied the SCOTUS to declare what law unconstitutional?
  1. Utah Senator Mike Lee proposed what unexpected solution to climate problems as he openly mocked the Green New Deal on the senate floor?
  1. After a meeting with Netanyahu, Dear Leader signed a proclamation recognizing Israel’s right to what territory?
  1. Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris unveiled a plan that would give substantial pay raises to what traditionally underpaid profession?
  1. What fruit was the subject of a six-state recall due to potential listeria contamination?
  1. Alabama congressman read from what book on the floor of the House in his effort to bash Democrats about the Mueller Report summary?

Is this true at your house also?

Answers

  1. Who knows? Rumor has it at over 300 pages. Another good reason why we need to see the full report
  1. Michael Avenatti
  1. Close the southern border
  1. Seema Verma at CMS (Medicare)
  1. Special Olympics
  1. He undercut her and claimed he would restore the money
  1. The Great Lakes Restoration Initiative
  1. Stephen Moore
  1. Jussie Smollett
  1. It got 248 votes, 288 needed to override – so 40 votes
  1. AG Bill Barr
  1. The Nazis
  1. George Papadapolous
  1. India
  1. The ACA
  1. Having more babies (white only I would guess for Lee)
  1. The Golan Heights
  1. Public school teachers
  1. Avocados
  1. Mo Brooks

Do you feel like you paid for the most anticipated book ever written but got the 5th grade book report from the dumb bully who never read the book nor will he. You will be told that that is good enough for you so quit bothering the seller.

Tragedy Never Ends With Gun Deaths

saved us from lettuce, now gunsToward the end of last week and the beginning of this week America was saddened once again when two of the most horrific mass killings in our history wrote yet another chapter.

As New Zealand was dealing very forcefully with with guns and doing what they can to stop another incident like what happened a couple of weeks ago. That is a response that the vast majority of sane citizens should expect from their government – that is if the government is “Of the people, by the people, and for the people.”

Meanwhile here in America what little we do is to make it easier for more people to get more guns. Iowa is once again trying to get on the train to get guns into everybody’s hands with the Republicans amendment to the state constitution. It is modeled after one clause of the second amendment of the constitution. Like most gun laws these days there is some mention of the right to own a gun, but nothing about a well regulated militia. There was once a time when being part of the militia was necessary to own a gun.

Last week we heard of the deaths by suicide of two students who survived the mass shooting just a little over a year ago. From NPR:

It’s impossible to say exactly what led these two young people to take their lives. Aiello was close friends with Meadow Pollack, one of the students killed in the attack.

Her parents say she struggled with “survivor’s guilt.” Shortly after her graduation, she shared a post about suicide prevention on her Facebook page with a hashtag, “asking for help is not a weakness.”

Les Gordon, a family therapist who counsels students and former students of the high school, says survivor’s guilt is a problem for many of his clients. “They wonder why they’re alive and their friend is not,” he says. “I’ve had kids just tell me that they should have been able to do something to stop the shooting.”

The effects of gun deaths don’t end when the victims die. Effects carry on and on and on. Every body who was involved in the deceased’s life replays the event in their head even for decades wondering what they could have done. Of course parents and siblings can never get it out of their minds. Relatives and friends will be similar.

That is for those who died. Seldom does every victim die, however. Whether a mass shooting or a single shooting, guns are meant to kill or at least inflict a lot of damage. We only get one life. Imagine that you are confined to a wheel chair paralyzed from the neck down when some perpetrator goes crazy and starts shooting. Do you remember Miya Rodolfo-Sioson who was shot at the U of Iowa when a graduate student went on a rampage late on a Friday afternoon back in November 1991?

Rodolfo-Sioson was paralyzed below the neck and spent her last 17 years in a wheel chair. As bad as that is by itself, in this society the victim often must pay for their care by themselves. Hard to do when you can’t work.

Republicans are doing all they can to end any government (meaning by extension WE collectively as a society) involvement in health care. What then happens to victims who need extensive and expensive care? Mother Jones did a great article on this nearly 4 years ago. This is a subject that is seldom covered in our press these days. It should be covered with every shooting. How much will we be paying as a society so the NRA can sell its fear and its guns?

The in depth article that Mother Jones did is still so relevant and still among the best pieces on the subject.

Gun violence is on my mind constantly. Our politicians gutlessly stand up and spew false platitudes about “gun rights” eager to get some of that NRA money in their election coffers. Often they are even more eager to get the NRA running campaign ads for them.

Strangely the same politicians who spew NRA talking points are stonewall silent when it comes to an ordinary citizen to live a life free from the terror of guns. The Preamble to the Constitution enshrines “domestic tranquility” and the “Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our posterity.” Shooting each other at the rate of 140,000 + victims a year (40,000 deaths and 100,000 injured) is not “domestic tranquility.”

Those two clauses in the Preamble taken with the seemingly disappeared “militia” clause of the second amendment, one could reasonably conclude that our founders did not want us shooting each other.

We need a political class that has the guts to stand up to the NRA. But the NRA is awash in money (from Russia?) and people who vote and they deploy both when when elections come around. Thanks to Mother Jones once again we have some evidence that looks like the NRA conspires illegally in campaigns – especially for Republicans.

“The National Rifle Association appears to have illegally coordinated its political advertising with Republican candidates in at least three recent high-profile US Senate races, according to Federal Communications Commission records. In Senate races in Missouri and Montana in 2018 and North Carolina in 2016, the gun group’s advertising blitzes on behalf of GOP candidates Josh Hawley, Matt Rosendale, and Richard Burr were authorized by the very same media consultant that the candidates themselves used—an apparent violation of laws designed to prevent independent groups from synchronizing their efforts with political campaigns.

In December, the Trace and Mother Jones reported on a similar pattern of coordination between the NRA and Donald Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign. In that case, Trump and the NRA hired affiliates of the same company—National Media Research, Planning and Placement—to direct their ad spending. Employees of that firm, operating under different corporate identities, placed ads for both Trump and the NRA on television stations across the country, with the apparent goal of reinforcing each other’s message.”

As you riff through this article remember that in 2014, the NRA backed our own Joni Ernst to the hilt. She has been working hard to pay them back much to Iowa’s detriment.

“Iowa Senator Joni Ernst is a national darling of the NRA’s effort to eliminate any and all meaningful gun safety laws that might keep children like those at Parkland, Florida from getting blown to pieces on a regular school day. Ernst received over $3.1 million in financial support from the NRA, the seventh-most of any senator, according to an analysis of campaign spending last October. Money from the gun rights organization poured into Iowa to help her get past the finish line in her race for Senate against Bruce Braley in 2014.

The NRA got what they paid for with Ernst, who then voted last February to stop a new rule that would have kept the mentally ill from obtaining guns through the background check system. Ernst voted in favor of House Joint Resolution 40, which sought to overturn a recent decision for the National Instant Criminal History Background Check System that would have kept people who considerable mental health issues from obtaining weapons. Both the House and Senate passed the resolution, and President Donald Trump signed it in February 2017.”

Just remember, shootings aren’t scheduled. With the proliferation of guns on the street the number of shootings will go up. Yes, even in small towns in Iowa.

And – oh yeah – in Connecticut the body of a parent of one of the victims of the Newtown massacre was found in his office in Newtown, an apparent suicide. Besides losing his daughter in the massacre, Jeremy Richman had been the victim of his grief and a harassment campaign by so called Sandy Hook hoaxers.

Solar Fees And Iowa Utility Board Rate Hike Hearing

kirsten running-marquardt

From Representative Kirsten Running-Marquardt:

Dear Friends and Neighbors,

We have finally made it through winter and as of March 20th, it’s officially Spring! Cold weather, however, can rear its ugly head at any time, sort of like the steady stream of bills proposed by legislators in the House and Senate. We recently went through a second funnel week, which means that most policy bills (does not include appropriations or tax bills) have had to pass through at least chamber in order to be considered. The Legislature’s focus will now be slowly narrowed to finalizing this year’s budget. While this means there is limited time for the some to continue to push bad bills through, many bad ideas could return through amendments, shipped over from the Senate or appear in large all-encompassing bills at the end. I will continue to work in a bi-partisan way for all Iowans.

I am concerned about HSB 185, which would impose fees of up to $300 a year on solar customers to “supposedly” cover the cost of accessing the electrical grid. Despite the misleading TV advertising funded by dark money groups, this bill is a blatant attempt to force solar panel owners to pay unnecessary fees and tries to blame solar panel owners for increased utility bills.  If passed, it would likely extend the amount of time it takes owners of solar panels to pay off their investment from less than ten years to more than 20 years and reduce accessibility for average Iowans who want to generate their own power through solar energy.  After going through an extreme winter throughout our state, we should not be punishing Iowans who are doing what they can to combat climate change by using renewable energy.  {italics and bolding mine – ed.}

On the topic of utilities, Alliant Energy recently filed applications with the Iowa Utilities Board (IUB) requesting a 24.45% retail rate increase for residential electric customers and 25% rate increase for residential gas customers beginning 2020. Alliant has also requested for an interim electric rate increase of $89.9 million among all classes, beginning April 1, 2019. Complete information on the rate increases is available on the IUB’s online filing system under RPU-2019-0001 (electric) and RPU-2019-0002 (gas). To file a comment on these proposed increases go here: https://iub.iowa.gov/online-services/open-docket-comment-form and use the above the RPU number to indicate if you are commenting on the proposed increases for RPU-2019-0001 (electric) and RPU-2019-0002 (gas). The Iowa Utilities Board will review your comments before their ruling. Iowans cannot afford these types of increases.  Please, consider contacting the IUB, file your concerns on the proposed rate increases and or attend a local meeting on the proposed increases.  The IUB will hold ten public comment meetings in April and May to provide Alliant customers an opportunity to express their views about Alliant’s proposed rate increases and the utility’s overall quality of service. IUB is working to arrange for remote participation via online webinar at the venues as well. The following public comment meetings are scheduled:  {bolding mine – ed.}

•    Creston: 5:30 pm, Thur., April 11, SWCC, Performing Art Center, 1501 W. Townline St.

Get Thee To A Forum!

Here is a sample of a forum from Muscatine earlier this year (45 minutes)

Just forums to remind you about this week. The legislature is gliding toward a finish. Republicans are dead set on doing what they can to turn Iowa into Mississippi with lots of snow.

Remember that their agenda includes totally changing the judicial appointment system, trying to keep students from voting in the towns they live in (except for private colleges, which makes no sense) and giving a huge gift to the utilities, especially Alliant, by imposing new fees on private solar systems. That’s our Republicans, helping the special interests while making the world worse for the rest of us.

Once again we access infonetone.org  http://www.infonetiowa.org/calendar/events/  for the weekly list of forums. As usual the list is by date and time. When you find a forum you wish to attend click on the city for the specific location.

Farmer’s Bill of Rights Rally This Weekend

From  J.D. Scholten
info@scholten4iowa.com

On March 30, at 10:30 am, at the Storm Lake High School gym, Family Farm Action will be hosting the Farmer’s Bill of Rights rally (see info here).

The rally will take place before the first major multi-candidate 2020 Democratic Presidential event, the Heartland Forum. Farmers and rural enthusiasts from all over the nation will be coming together and Farm Aid plans to have Country legend Willie Nelson record a video for the rally. I will be a featured speaker and my Working Hero Action video highlighting the abuse of the Renewable Fuel Standard will be shown as well.

This morning, I announced that I’ll be taking Sioux City Sue, the RV I campaigned in, to the rally. If there are any farmers between Sioux City and Storm Lake that want a ride, please contact Working Hero or email me at jd@workingheroaction.org.

As many of you know, I talked a lot about market consolidation in the Ag economy squeezing our farmers. More and more people/campaigns are starting to talk about the importance of this issue. So much so that Ryan Grim, of The Intercept, tweeted this:

Family Farm Action has been a leader in fighting for farmers in a time when Wall St. is dictating our Farm Policy. If you’re able, please contribute to their cause: https://secure.actblue.com/donate/farmaction

Family Farm Action will be donating $.25 of every dollar raised at the rally to FarmAid’s disaster relief fund to support farmers and ranchers affected by the recent flooding.

Thank you.

Standing Tall for All,

J.D. Scholten

P.S. A special thank you to the following for their support of this rally:

Featured Sponsor: Family Farm Action and Organization for Competitive Markets
Sponsors: Working Hero Action and Regeneration International
Participating Organizations: Association of American Indian Farmers, American Grassfed Association, Farm Aid, National Black Farmers Association, National Family Farm Coalition, Indiana Farmers Union and Wisconsin Farmers Union.

Iowa’s Three Congressional Democrats Send Letter To Attorney General Barr

Iowa Democrats Call on Trump Administration to Halt Efforts to Strike Down ACA Protections

Eliminating ACA strips patient protections, including coverage of pre-existing conditions, reopens donut hole and kicks young adults off parents’ care

Washington, D.C. – Today, Iowa’s three Democratic Representatives, Dave Loebsack (IA-02), Abby Finkenauer (IA-01) and Cindy Axne (IA-03) called on the Department of Justice to drop its effort to strike down the Affordable Care Act (ACA), which would lead to the loss of patient protections, including for those with pre-existing conditions, reopening the prescription drug donut hole, removing the ban on lifetime limits and taking away the ability for young adults to stay on their parents’ health insurance until 26. In a letter to Attorney General William Barr, Loebsack called on the administration to halt its efforts to strike down the ACA.

A copy of the letter can be found here.

“This decision would have terrible consequences on American families who deserve access to quality, affordable health care. Repealing the ACA would return us to a time when millions were uninsured due to pre-existing conditions and those who need healthcare most were limited by lifetime caps,” the Representatives wrote. “Overturning the ACA would harm the 133 million Americans who have pre-existing conditions – including the 1,290,000 Iowans who have pre-existing conditions who would be threatened.”

The Representatives concluded: “The cost of healthcare has become unaffordable for the majority of Americans. We must focus on lowering the costs of healthcare services and prescription drugs and not remove insurance coverage and protections from those who need it most.”
