November Is Coming One Way Or Another

I don’t know about you but I’m going to turn my attention to November.

COVID-19 has settled in and we’re just going to have to let it run its course. As Dear Leader said in his presser yesterday, “Just enjoy your living rooms.”

It is clear mass testing will never happen no matter how many reassurances they give us about it being just around the corner. Without mass testing we have no idea and no data.

So the Trump administration has rationalized this –  apart from lying about rejecting the WHO tests because they were defective (they weren’t but the CDC tests were) – by saying yesterday that we don’t really need testing because we should all just be staying home and social distancing anyway!

So as Walter Cronkite used to say, that’s the way it is.  Personally, I don’t need to watch this trainwreck up close and personal between now and November. I will hang on for the wild ride that we’re in for. I will wash my hands. I will not hoard.  I will stay home. I will pray that somehow there will be enough ventilators to go around.  I will do everything I can to not contribute to spreading the virus and I will focus my time in isolation working to elect a Democratic president, congress, state government and participating in whatever grassroots actions I can take to ensure fair elections in November – assuming we have an election.

Now is an opportune time to write letters to the editor, sign those progressive petitions, contact representatives and the governor, donate to campaigns.

By the way, the media isn’t really making this clear:  Younger people are in less danger of getting terribly sick from COVID-19 but you can still get it and spread it, so please stay out of the bars for awhile. [UPDATE: Bars and restaurants have been ordered closed by Governor Reynolds].

Bob Cesca’s thoughts in Salon yesterday.

https://www.salon.com/2020/03/17/gop-groundhog-day-why-do-we-keep-electing-republicans-theyre-no-good-at-this/

Trump voters justified this choice by suggesting that an obnoxious, undisciplined “businessman” who sold steaks in Sharper Image mall stores was fully qualified to run the world’s most powerful government (which isn’t at all like a business). This was like shoving a carnie who runs the Tilt-a-Whirl into the cockpit of a Space-X rocket. Maybe he’ll stir things up, they thought, choosing to experiment with the presidency by handing an erratic weirdo the nuclear codes. What could possibly go wrong? For starters, the rocket is nosediving, and we’re all passengers, including the voters who put us here.

Indeed, carnage is what we’re seeing now as we wake up to our shocking new normal for the foreseeable future. But even before the COVID-19 crisis, even before the financial crisis, there was the “Trump Crisis” — the daily institution-crushing mayhem erupting from Trump’s phone, from federal investigators and from the fast-moving process of turning the executive branch into a subsidiary of the Trump Organization. It was only a matter of time before Trump’s flimsy, brittle presidency, built on make-believe and held together with masking tape and spit by Fox News, fell apart. Sadly, we’re all getting hit by the debris from the crash.

Help Grassley And Ernst Do Their Jobs

Here is an Indivisible action alert forwarded from CCI

Take Action – Call your U.S. Senator

Early Saturday morning, the U.S. House passed an emergency Coronavirus relief package to help address the health and economic impacts our communities are facing.

While there are always things to critique, this bill is an important first step and the U.S. Senate should pass it immediately.

Iowa Senators Grassley and Ernst need to do what’s right for people and make this emergency response the first order of business.

The Senate must hear the voice of constituents saying WE NEED THESE PROTECTIONS NOW. If we’re silent, we’ll see more dangerous delay.

Call their DC office today:

  • Iowa Senator Charles Grassley
    (202) 224-3744
  • Iowa Senator Joni Ernst
    (202) 224-3254

Or you can use this quick link from Indivisible to be connected with your Senators in Iowa or beyond: Click link here.

Script:

“Hello, my name is ______ and I am from [city/town]. This is urgent: Please tell Senator _____ that voting on this emergency response should be the first order of business. It protects people most in need and so it protects all of us. The House bill is a necessary start. Don’t delay.

Our communities need immediate paid sick leave, unemployment insurance, nutrition aid, more Medicaid funds, free testing and treatment, and protections for health care and other workers.

[if you have a personal story, share it.]

This is a true national emergency – you know that.
Congress must do a lot more than this bill, but this bill must pass now. If there ever was a time for you to speak up, it’s now.”

Thanks for all you do.

Governor Reynolds Press Conference: “We Now Have Community Spread”

UPDATE: Sunday night Governor Reynolds issued an update of four more Iowa coronavirus cases and additional community spread. She recommended that Iowa schools close for the next four weeks.  You can watch the video here.  The governor will hold a press conference Monday .

###

Due to the Trump administration’s dereliction of duty by delaying testing while the disease spreads and calling the virus a hoax and other dangerous nonsense, the people, along with state and local officials and private organizations, have had to figure out what to do on our own.  Since we have been unable to rely on our president to provide leadership we must rely on state government. But this press conference held by Governor Reynolds Saturday did little to inspire confidence.

There was no mention about our testing prospects. The governor did not mention either “social distancing” or “flattening the curve” of the spread of the virus, so here is a link to an excellent video simulation of why and how social distancing works to prevent the spread of the disease.

This image kind of says it all.

Sunday Funday: No High Holy Days This Year Edition

Readers of this blog know that this week in March your humble quizmaster usually declares this week of the calendar year as the “High Holy Days of Basketball” as conference tournaments come to an end, state High school tournaments are ending and the stage is being set for the grandest tournament of all, the NCAA tourney. This year could have been the greatest NCAA tournament ever.

As you all know there is sorrow in the land of basketball as the games have come to a sudden stop. I believe the Iowa State boys’ tournament may have been the very last basketball of the year across the country as it completed its full run Friday night.

Almost unbelievably, basketball was probably another victim of the current administration. Had the president responded the way he should have early on the covid19 may not have spread across the country so quickly. Chalk up another one for the most incompetent leader ever.

We still have quizzes!

  1. “Corona, corona” whatever does “corona” mean?
  1. What founder of one of the major technology companies in the world stepped down from the company’s Board of Directors to spend his time on philanthropic interests?
  1. In a ruling Friday, the full Federal Appeals Court vacated a three judge panel decision that courts had no role in forcing who to appear before Congress?

  1. The wife of what western hemisphere leader tested positive for Covid19?
  1. Republicans are calling Covid19 by what name in their effort to use it as a slur against a group of people?
  1. A March perennial since 1939, what major event was cancelled on Wednesday?
  1. Judge Dannenburg resigned from the Supreme Court Bar Friday saying to who, “You are allowing the Court to become an ‘errand boy’ for an administration that has little respect for the rule of law? “
  1. Who was sentenced to 23 years in New York State prison for sexual abuse of women Wednesday?
  1. Who wrote “The Feminine Mystique” in 1968 that became one of the early guiding books of the feminist movement?
  1. In a normal year many of us would be parading, dancing and singing in honor of what man next Tuesday? Looks like this year there will be no such fun.

“When You Fail To Plan……”

profits first

Perhaps most everyone has heard that little saying from Ben Franklin – “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” Never has this been illustrated so graphically as it is being now. The Covid-19 virus outbreak has been been hard to deal with because of its characteristics anyway, but the lack of preparedness on the part of the current administration has been monumental.

From the very beginning of this corona virus crisis the current administration has – like it does in most anything it screws up – tried to cover up reality with accusations of malfeasance by Democrats, claims of lies by the media and their usual misleads with other stories. At the bottom, the current administration thought it could bluff its way out of this health crisis just like it bluffed its way out of the Russia scandal and the Ukraine scandal.

But I am not here to rehash stories and opinions that you have heard over and over. We all know how Trump has completely failed in this real test of leadership. What most people will fail to understand is that he has not only failed, he and his Republican predecessors have set the country up such that the response to this crisis or any real crisis will be hard to do and will be costly.

Remember when Ronald Reagan said in his inaugural address that “government is the problem?” He and his Republican successors have since done all they could to make sure that government would not function. One of their strategies has been to run up huge debts.

Since the Reagan administration the economic policy of the Republican Party has been to bankrupt the government with the goal of choking any safety net or social programs because of a lack of money. Regan drove the national debt over $3 Trillion. Reagan’s successor Bush I added another $2 Trillion and Bush’s son took it down another $6 Trillion. In all 3 cases they left not only a huge debt but also an ongoing yearly deficit that would ensure that Democrats would either have to keep running up the debt or enact unpopular tax increases.

President Clinton was able to pay down some of the debt to the point that there was even a conference on what to do if the government was out of debt. President Obama was handed a huge debt run up by the Republican presidents and a broken economy that was teetering on a world wide depression. Saving the economy from depression was priority #1.

When Franklin Roosevelt became president at the height of the Great Depression in 1933 he employed what eventually became known as ‘Keynsian Economics’ named after economist John Maynard Keynes. In short the idea is that government could stop the wild boom and bust swings by using monetary policy. In good times the government saves money and is less deeply involved in the economy, but keeps big booms tamped down with tax policy. In lean times, the government keeps the economy from bad recessions by spending money – which was accumulated through taxes during good times – putting people to work and lightening taxes. Thus would spur the economy and stave off recession and depression.

Since Reagan, Republicans have turned Keynsian economics on its head  by doing such things as cutting taxes during good times, cutting interest during good times and running up huge debts in both good times and bad. Thus we have had 40 years of running up debt. The objective was at some point to claim that the government could no longer afford social programs such as Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, food stamps, education, housing and so on.

Theoretically there would also be no money to respond to crises such as the current health crisis because that would drive the debt way too high. In such crises money in the Social Security Trust Fund and Medicare and any other such funds could be drawn on, at least in the view of Republicans.

Most of the money that funded the government in the post war years has disappeared from the government budget. Where did it go? Well, a good example is the Trump tax cut of 2017. This has been the crowning achievement of his administration. Who got the money? The very rich and corporations. The idea was that they would create new jobs and give pay raises.

But that is not what happened. Instead much of the money was invested in the stock market in what are known as “stock buy backs.” This is where companies buy their own stock to keep the price up. No job creation, no pay raises. As you have seen in the last couple of weeks most of that money has just disappeared as the administration’s totally incompetent response to the Covid-19 crisis revealed major problems on the country’s leadership.

In the process of making the government “the problem,” the administration even dismantled an agency built to confront the specific crisis we have today. Seems to me the only time “the government is the problem” is when we put Republicans in charge.

From Robert Reich at Inequality Media:

The coronavirus outbreak is officially a global pandemic.

The market has lost half of all its gains since Trump was inaugurated.

The economy is in free-fall as workers and families scramble to adjust to shuttered businesses and schools.

Democrats rose swiftly to the occasion, introducing a sweeping coronavirus relief package late last night. It proposes strengthened unemployment benefits, a substantial paid sick leave national policy, food security assistance, and a host of other crucial measures to help workers weather the economic fallout of the pandemic.

How did Republicans respond? Let’s see:

• Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell dismissed Democrats’ proposed legislation as an “ideological wish list”, after blocking an emergency paid sick leave bill from reaching the Senate floor yesterday

• House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy announced House Republicans would not support the bill, claiming it contained “glaring problems”

Meanwhile, the Trump administration continues to incite chaos and confusion. Trump’s speech last night was full of glaring falsehoods that sent the Dow plummeting over 1,000 points and the American public into a panic.

So far, Trump has proposed bailouts for the oil industry and another round of corporate tax cuts. And the Federal Reserve just injected $1.5 trillion into short-term bank funding.

But here’s the problem: Coronavirus won’t respond to trickle-down economics, and we’re only as safe as the least protected among us.

We need to make sure the American public knows the truth about what must be done to combat this public health crisis and get our economy back on track.

Trump’s lies and Republicans’ complicity are putting the health and safety of Americans in jeopardy. The number of cases is exploding and every day without decisive action puts us at greater risk.

The truth — and concrete action — have never been more crucial than they are right now.

And remember — please wash your hands and avoid crowds if at all possible.

Stay safe,

Robert Reich

ICYMI: Biden Speaks On Corona Virus Thursday

What real leadership looks like: (18 minutes)

Hard to believe that we have to wait nearly a year to put someone in place who actually cares about this country and its people.

All the current leadership is concerned about is blaming the event on someone else and making sure his buddies don’t lose money.

And here is the current president refusing to take responsibility for his own actions and lying, lying, lying once again (1 minute):

U.S. Could Be Testing Tens Of Thousands A Day Right Now

Knowing everything we know about Donald Trump, would it really be shocking to learn he has possibly sabotaged the country by blocking our ability to test for the coronavirus?

So now might be a good time to read Naomi Klein’s book The Shock Doctrine. It centers on “the exploitation of national crises to push through controversial policies while citizens are too emotionally and physically distracted by disasters or upheavals to mount an effective resistance.” The book was made into a documentary and is available on YouTube.

But we digress. Here we learn that there are test kits available that would allow us to test tens of thousands a day that we are not using because they are waiting for FDA approval.

And not coincidentally, there is this story by NPR saying that Trump blocked coronavirus testing to help his reelection chances.  Shock shock.

The Other Public Health Emergency

Feelings are not facts. You may feel safer, but you are actually less safe carrying a firearm than other forms of self defense.

“There is an epidemic sweeping our nation.

Firearms are the second leading cause of death among American children and adolescents, after car crashes. Firearm deaths occur at a rate more than three times higher than drownings.

Having a loaded gun in one’s possession, presumably for personal protection – actually makes it much more likely that a friend or family member will be injured or die when that weapon is either deployed or accidentally discovered by a child.”

Rural Communities Face Unique Challenges With COVID-19

Just as important as taking the White House back from Trump is to both win a senate majority so we can send Moscow Mitch packing and to maintain the majority in the House of Representatives.  This could be the year we fire Steve King and get true representation in Iowa’s 4th district.

J.D. Scholten’s campaign  has been positive and focused on issues of importance to Iowans. His campaign newsletters are informational, and frequently suggest actions the grassroots can take.  I always open my J.D. emails because it’s never just a money ask and I always learn something. Let’s help J.D. take this congressional seat back from crazy Steve King.

Here’s a note from J.D.:

We are in the middle of a public health crisis, and leaders in Washington remain woefully unprepared to create a plan to address it.

Coronavirus is a threat that demands competent leadership, but all we’ve seen is chaos, denials, outright lies, misinformation, and more corporate handouts. The Administration is putting the profits of Wall Street and corporations over helping sick people, and we’re running the risk of doing too little, too late.

The response to coronavirus can’t leave rural America behind. Rural communities are at a higher risk of worse outcomes — and any federal response should adequately confront these challenges.

Add your name to our petition if you agree: We can’t forget about rural communities during this public health crisis.

Some leaders — but not enough — have condemned the chaos, while demanding the response prioritize the health and safety of Americans over corporate interests.

With the proper response, we can contain coronavirus, prevent the spread, and aid those already infected — but only if our leaders understand who needs the most help.

Add your name in calling for a response to coronavirus that addresses the unique challenges facing rural communities.

Thanks,

Team Scholten
