Universal Basic Income, Universal Health Care

Truman on health care

The scourge of the coronavirus and the massive mishandling of the response by the Republican Party from the White House to the state house has made it pretty apparent that in order for this country to once again be a world leader there are a couple of programs that need to be implemented.

The first is true universal health care. Having our health care system run by insurance companies in any form is a idea whose time passed decades ago. Yet here is the United States in the 21st century creaking along with a 19th century system, only a step or so above a bartering system.

I won’t go into all the reasons why this is so necessary, I think we have all heard them over and over and over. But there is one comment I would like to make. As we slowly come out of this pandemic, we will be seeing thousands, maybe millions of people who thought their coronavirus treatment was covered by some insurance who will be finding out that there were some holes. Folks will probably be looking at tens of thousands of dollars of unexpected debt.

That would not happen with universal health care.

The other program would be something along the lines of what former presidential candidate Andrew Yang espoused during his candidacy. That would be some form of a universal basic income. We are now entering a very sad chapter in American history where millions of people may be losing their homes because their incomes disappeared as the pandemic caused businesses across the country to close leaving business owners and workers stranded without income.

The Democrats were able to get an emergency funding passed that covered many of these folks for a short while. That has expired and millions are now at the mercy of a Republican Party that does not want to help these people out for help. Millions of people on the street at a time when billionaires portfolios are skyrocketing will be perhaps the saddest sight America will have ever seen.

This is merely a comment. As we near the election and life in America continues to spiral down, maybe just maybe this election we will elect the Democratic president and both houses of congress that could make such programs a reality. America is the land of great wealth and unfortunately grinding poverty that looks like it will be getting much worse very quickly. We can afford at least minimal living conditions for all our citizens.

Andrew Yang political soapbox

In case you forgot, Candidate Andrew Yang ran on a platform of a basic income for all citizens.

Sunday Funday: Trump Knocks Out Big Ten Football Edition

In case you missed this little news item this week (7.5 minutes)

In another small attention getter the showdown between the Trump virus and Big Ten football resulted in a knockout for the Trump virus. The Trump virus is on a roll having knocked out a huge amount of businesses, most county and state fairs around the country and lopping off 1/3 of the US economy. One stubborn opponent remains for the formidable Trump virus. That is schools.

Schools from pre-K through university seem to think that they have the stuff to stare down the so far unbeaten virus. State governors across the land are betting your children’s lives on it. In preliminary bouts in states such as Georgia, Indiana and Mississippi the Trump virus has scored several KOs. The majority of the bouts will begin the week proceeding and following Labor Day. We wish schools well, but the Trump virus is a killer.

Betsy DeVos’ Deadly Plan to Open Schools

Once again former Secretary of Labor, economics professor and founder of Inequality Media Robert Reich brings light on an insane trump administration policy. The policy in this case is the push to re-open public schools across the country no matter what the readiness of the school for the pandemic.

We have already seen schools in some southern states open only to have them closed within a few days as the virus spreads quickly in crowded places:

“Several of the first U.S. schools to reopen their classrooms are already experiencing covid-19 outbreaks. The news is particularly grim in Georgia, where Gov. Brian Kemp (R) declined to issue an order requiring masks in schools. One district there has been forced to quarantine nearly 1,000 students and staff. “

Expect similar scenes in Iowa when schools begin to open next week. Gov. Reynolds made some criteria for closing schools. Since then she has stated that even if those criteria were met she probably would not allow schools to close. There are already eight counties whose coronavirus infections are above Reynolds ridiculously high levels.

The only push behind re-opening the schools is so Donald Trump can claim another “victory” in his complete mishandling of the pandemic. Our Governor crew only about Trump’s re-election and is more than happy to use your children, grandchildren and our teachers as canon fodder. Simply the worst decision any Iowa governor has ever made.

Perhaps the sickest part of the whole re-opening drama is the lies repeated over and over and over that children do not catch infections at the same rate and they recover quicker. Look in almost any K-3 classroom and you will see plenty of sick kids and missing kids because some illness is being passed around. Once we gather kids in a classroom you will see just how quickly coronavirus will be shared.

And there will be deaths of children and teachers. These will be the childhood memories Kim Reynolds will leave with our children.

Aeronabs – Can They Block The Virus?

This accompanying video (2.5 minutes) explains the discovery:

Stumbled across this article Thursday afternoon. I was not quite ready for what I read. This is one of those “I hope it is true, I hope it is true” articles.

Seems researchers at the University of California at San Francisco have engineered a synthetic aerosol that is capable of blocking coronaviruses from attaching to cells in the body. It is not a vaccine, but would sort of act like one once inhaled by a user. The blocking molecules named “aeronabs” by the researchers would last a long time in the body. The aerosol itself would be low cost.

From the article:

In an aerosol formulation they tested, dubbed “AeroNabs” by the researchers, these molecules could be self-administered with a nasal spray or inhaler. Used once a day, AeroNabs could provide powerful, reliable protection against SARS-CoV-2 until a vaccine becomes available. The research team is in active discussions with commercial partners to ramp up manufacturing and clinical testing of AeroNabs. If these tests are successful, the scientists aim to make AeroNabs widely available as an inexpensive, over-the-counter medication to prevent and treat COVID-19.

“Far more effective than wearable forms of personal protective equipment, we think of AeroNabs as a molecular form of PPE that could serve as an important stopgap until vaccines provide a more permanent solution to COVID-19,” said AeroNabs co-inventor Peter Walter, PhD, professor of biochemistry and biophysics at UCSF and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator. For those who cannot access or don’t respond to SARS-CoV-2 vaccines, Walter added, AeroNabs could be a more permanent line of defense against COVID-19.

<<snip>>

SARS-CoV-2 relies on its so-called spike proteins to infect cells. These spikes stud the surface of the virus and impart a crown-like appearance when viewed through an electron microscope – hence the name “coronavirus” for the viral family that includes SARS-CoV-2. Spikes, however, are more than a mere decoration – they are the essential key that allows the virus to enter our cells.

Like a retractable tool, spikes can switch from a closed, inactive state to an open, active state. When any of a virus particle’s approximately 25 spikes become active, that spike’s three “receptor-binding domains,” or RBDs, become exposed and are primed to attach to ACE2 (pronounced “ace two”), a receptor found on human cells that line the lung and airway.

<<snip>>

In a separate set of experiments, they engineered a molecular chain that could link three nanobodies together. As noted, each spike protein has three RBDs, any of which can attach to ACE2 to grant the virus entry into the cell. The linked triple nanobody devised by the researchers ensured that if one nanobody attaches itself to an RBD, the other two would attach to the remaining RBDs. They found that this triple nanobody is 200,000 times more potent than a single nanobody alone.

And when they drew on the results of both modifications, linking three of the powerful mutated nanobodies together, the results were “off the charts,” said Walter. “It was so effective that it exceeded our ability to measure its potency.”

Be sure to go to the website and read the whole story.

With all the hyped up news we have had on vaccines we really need to cast a jaundiced eye toward any claims right now. But I got to say this looks promising.

In First World Countries Water, Electricity and Mail Must Flow

post_office_50278_zearing

There have been some real life lessons in the past few days. One thing many of us relearned as it seems we have to at least once a year is that things get pretty primitive pretty fast without electricity. America loves to pride herself on how advanced its living standards are. Without electricity, we can become somewhat primitive pretty fast.

One of the marks of a first world country is reliable and affordable electricity. Another mark of a first world country is reliable clean water that comes right into our homes. Clean water in our homes allows us to clean our food, drink many forms of liquid and clean our hands and bodies to keep diseases at bay. This is of course being fully utilized these days.

Reliable, accessible and relatively cheap electricity and water are among attributes of a first world country. The utilities are set up to run systemically outside of the political sphere because they are so fundamental to our way of life. If such utilities were subject to the vagaries of a political system our business and economic systems would be put in greta danger.

Another of the pillars of a first world country is a reliable, accessible and relatively cheap mail system. The mail system was thought to be so important that the framers put it in the constitution:

Article I, Section 8, Clause 7 of the United States Constitution, known as the Postal Clause or the Postal Power, empowers Congress “To establish Post Offices and Post Roads“.

Since those early days while the postal service has at times been somewhat of a political football over the decades no one has ever sought to slow the mail. Making sure the mail continues to flow is basic to our society functioning as it should. “Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds.” While the Postal Service has no official motto, the popular belief that it does is a tribute to America’s postal workers.

The current president has made it clear he will somewhat dismantle the Post Office and the only reason why is to steal the election:

Unable to postpone the election he seems poised to lose, Donald Trump has been working to derail the mail-in voting many Americans will rely on to safely cast ballots this fall in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. But while he’s railed against the surge of mail-in ballots in public, falsely claiming it will result in widespread fraud, his efforts to undermine the postal service on which such voting depends have been less explicit, with the cuts his handpicked crony has implemented at the embattled agency framed as cost-cutting measures rather than sabotage.

Speaking to Fox Business on Thursday morning, however, the president made clear what his shenanigans at the USPS are really about—hamstringing the agency so it can’t handle the influx of ballots. “They need that money in order to make the post office work so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots,” Trump told Maria Bartiromo, referring to funding requests for vote-by-mail and the postal service he and Capitol Hill Republicans have stood against in coronavirus relief negotiations. “But if they don’t get those two items, that means you can’t have universal mail-in voting.”

Now we have a president who is deliberately slowing OUR mail service for the only purpose to try to rig the election in his favor. This is a totally new form of voter suppression brought to us by the party that is always thinking up ways to steal election. Voter suppression is one of their favorite methods.

However, this voter suppression – slowing maybe even stopping the mail will have much longer range impact. A huge amount of commerce is still done through the mail. I don’t know about you, but my utility bills and some tax bills come through the mail. I pay those bills by mail. If the mail is slowed and I end up not paying the bills on time because I did not receive them on time, my utilities could get cut.

We also get what little we order on the internet through the mail. We have found USPS to be more reliable and cheaper than the competitors. If the mail is slowed, there will be a big hit in the world of commerce. Deliveries could be very late. Billing would be late leading to late payments. Credit ratings could be ruined for no fault of the consumer whose bill never came.

Of course the one that will really be hurt will be the delivery of medications. Insurance companies have pushed hard for most folks to get their medications via the USPS. They could do so because the USPS deliveries were so reliable. When it was time for a refill, it would be there in your mailbox.

Now Donald Trump has already put a dent in that reliability. He doesn’t care if someone dies or gets violently ill through his decisions. That has been made pretty obvious by his handling of the coronavirus pandemic in this country. So if you don’t get you medications and end up in the hospital neither Trump nor his enablers care. You are now just a statistic.

When I say enablers, I mean Mitch McConnell of course who has blocked any an all legislation that could greatly ease the pain caused by the mishandled pandemic. Think McConnell cares if people get sick or die or lose their credit rating?

If enough of us call Grassley’s Washington or state offices (numbers here) or Ernst’s offices (numbers here) and let them know that screwing up our mail service is simply not acceptable.

Just came across this summary by Quemodo on democraticunderground of a story on dailykos.com:

According to the Daily Kos, (https://www.dailykos.com/stories/2020/8/13/1968935/-Immediate-Remedy-For-USPS-Sabotage):

Washington, Oregon, Hawaii, Colorado, and Utah use 100% vote-by-mail in their elections. These states should go to the Supreme Court in a lawsuit against Trump and DeJoy (postmaster general) so that under the “original Jurisdiction” rules in the constitution the case can be brought directly to the Supreme Court, commencing with a request for a temporary restraining order and preliminary injunction.

18 US Code Section 1701 et seq. makes intentional delay or obstruction of the U.S. mail by any person a federal crime.

Iowa Postal Worker “We Have The Capacity To Handle The Election Mail”

Watch the president of the Iowa Postal Workers Union discuss election mail issues on Lawrence O’Donnell.  Don’t panic but it’s a really good idea to get your ballot request in and your ballot returned early. Leave nothing to chance because the election-stealing GOP is leaving nothing to chance.

For more information about what is going on as the corrupt GOP try everything in their  bag of tricks to cheat and suppress the vote because that is the only way they can win, see this NPR interview with Kimberly Karol.

https://www.npr.org/2020/08/11/901219097/how-are-postmaster-general-dejoys-changes-affecting-workers

Kimberly Karol is the president of the Iowa Postal Workers Union and a postal clerk herself in Waterloo, Iowa.

KING (NPR): Are you feeling these changes that are being made in Iowa?

KAROL: Yes, we are beginning to see those changes and how it is impacting the mail. Mail is beginning to pile up in our offices, and we’re seeing equipment being removed. So we are beginning to see the impact of those changes.

KING: Curious – I hadn’t heard about this one – equipment being removed. What equipment?

KAROL: The sorting equipment that we use to process mail for delivery. In Iowa, we are losing machines. And they already in Waterloo were losing one of those machines. So that also hinders our ability to process mail in the way that we had in the past.

Hope Rears Its Head For The First Time In 3.5 Years

Joe Biden’s selection of Senator Kamala Harris as his Vice-Presidential choice has stirred a huge positive response across the country.

Harris is giving the Democratic campaign a huge amount positive energy in the first days after the announcement. Seldom has a vice-presidential candidate so energized a campaign in my experience. Think back through your lifetime of all the VP candidates and I doubt you can name one that added such immediate vitality to a ticket.

Of course the Russian bots and the right wing acolytes are digging deep to insult and denigrate Harris. Nothing has stuck. Most likely none of it will. The only losers in this situation will be those who are trying to knock Harris. They already look like fools. It won’t get any better for them.

Harris possesses and incredibly sharp mind. She also has the experience to step right in and get to work on the major problems that will be left by the worst administration ever. Of course Former VP Biden has a long lifetime of experience that will allow him to start turning the country around day one. A great one-two punch.

Besides her experience, Kamala Harris instantly becomes THE symbol that a woman in America can achieve. Kamala Harris proves that in America your achievements are no longer limited by your sex or race. If you have the ability you can achieve even the highest offices in this land.

Harris’s nomination is one more major step in America finally beginning to fulfill the promises that America made in founding documents such as the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. Promises are easy to make, but hard to keep. It took a long time, but America is on the verge of finally making the very bedrock promise of America come true.

As with any pioneer, Kamala will need to be tough and visionary. Her history tells us she is both. America, this is indeed a historic time.

Make sure you are registered to vote! Request an absentee ballot. This IS the most important election in your life.

Thunderstorm Rolling In

As with many Iowans we are cleaning up after the storm. Power is in the process of being restored. Our postings may be sporadic for a while yet. We will post as possible and when a story may warrant it.

We know most of the state was battered Monday. We hope you all are able to restore your lives to what they were before the storm quickly..

We would also like to congratulate Senator Kamala Harris on her choice as former Vice President Biden’s running mate. This seems like a formidable ticket that will be able to get to work restoring the country day one.

Thanks for your patience. We shall return.

Iowa Approach To Covid-19 Ignores What Works

Dr Louis Katz the “Fauci of Iowa,” epidemiologist in Scott County says Iowa is getting it all wrong.

https://qctimes.com/opinion/columnists/column-we-are-adrift-and-unmasked/article

“To those of you who shout that effective measures used all over the rest of the world infringe on your constitutional rights, I can only recommend you read the Constitution (note I did not say “reread”). You have no right to endanger others — period. You do not know if you are infected or who you are going to infect and possibly kill. If you don’t want to wear a mask, don’t, but stay away from the rest of us.”

“Iowa is a red zone per the White House coronavirus task force. From four cases per day in Scott County during early June, we have surged as high as 76 in mid-July and average 20-30 daily now. Each reported case represents 5-10 uncounted infections.

“Now we know COVID can be transmitted from patients with no symptoms — so it cannot be controlled “just” by asking sick folks to stay home. Worse, children, adolescents and young adults… are less likely to avoid public spaces where they transmit the virus. They have driven our local July surge, and their infections are now spilling into older adults.

“Premature state reopenings demanded by the administration and its enablers ignore global experience. Early on, China, the European Union and others showed us the route to success while waiting for vaccines, combined enforced social distancing and masking that bought time to expand test and tracing capacity, permitted staged reopening, including schools, with maintenance of acceptable case rates, health system capacity and mortality. The U.S. and Iowa disregarded their experience.

“Can we turn it around?”
