Return Iowa To Normalcy

Michael Franken

As the J6 Committee hearings roll on there is little question that the then president was the driving force behind an attempt to end our constitutional government in the US after some 230 years. There had been little question before that. The Committee has simply put a lot of flesh on the bones of what most Americans believed was true.

What has been amazing is that the current Republican Party, instead of condemning this attack on the government that has provided Americans with a good structure for a couple of centuries, has instead almost 100% chosen to rally behind a man who committed treason.

Such support for Trump surely brings us to question the motives of those supporters. Why would Chuck Grassley support a man who seems to have committed open treason? That certainly belies any claims he makes of working for the best interests of the country. The best interests of the country would be to root out those involved in or sympathetic to the insurrection.

Grassley needs to be pressed on this at campaign appearances. Which is more important – Trump or the country? As of right now, Grassley is siding with Trump and his followers. Is Grassley so scared of being called a RINO that he is afraid to stand up for what is right.

On a similar note, Grassley voted NO on the compromise gun bill the other day. This is not a man of integrity who wants to put life over the gun industry. This is a man who gets tons of money from the gun industry and votes for them no matter what. Once bought he stays bought. But that is not good for Iowa.

I sometimes wonder if the school age children of Iowa – just short of 500,000 – each ponied up $5 and gave it to Grassley for him to vote to regulate guns if that would do anything? These kids just want to get an education without the fear that some loser will burst into their classroom and blast them away. Is that asking too much?

Frustration and fear is really starting to settle in for many Americans following the SCOTUS decision Thursday to strike down New York state’s restrictions on concealed carry. This case will be the springboard for ending almost all restrictions on guns in this country.

Therefore in short order, a person may be well advised to be wary that any person they interact with could easily be packing a pistol. We were once told this would make for a more polite society. It will certainly make for a more fearful society. One of the people we can thank for this is Grassley.

Grassley who stopped a SCOTUS nomination by ignoring the constitutional provisions of the constitution. Grassley who worked for the election of a thoroughly unqualified person for president. Grassley who now supports that same person even after he committed treason.

Mike Franken has been a breath of fresh air in the rancid atmosphere of recent Iowa politics. Franken has an extremely distinguished public career rising to the rank of 3 star admiral in the US Navy. Folks, he is competent! And he has a set of values learned in a much more normal Iowa that has served him well.

In a recent email, he reminded Iowans how their state has always been at the forefront of progress in America:

Fox News and my opponent Chuck Grassley are hot to paint me as “liberal.” They’re already calling me a radical socialist who is the most liberal person to ever run for office. (*eye roll*)

Bit of history: Iowa was one of the first states to open college for women, to elect women to public office, and admit female lawyers to the bar. We were the second state in the nation to allow interracial marriage and the first state to desegregate public schools. Iowa is home to America’s oldest mosque, and we were the third state to recognize same-sex marriage.

You would think the good Senator would recall these events… Perhaps Grassley has forgotten Iowa and who we are – or maybe he’s just once again playing partisan politics and courting the support of far-right fringe groups to try to win reelection.

Iowa has always been a place of progressive values, and I am running against Chuck Grassley because it’s time to return our state to its roots of advocating equality and caring for one another.

Mike Franken will not be for sale to the highest bidder. It is time for Iowa to pick the guy who will put Iowa values first.

Iowans deserve a guy who will fight for them and their children, not the top 1%. Mike Franken is that guy.

Roe v. Wade Overturned

Well, now we know what he meant. Very bad for women

Much as with the death of a friend or relative, even when you know they are dying you still hold out hope until that final breath is drawn. Even though we had much warning, when the official release of the Dobbs v. Jackson happened Friday morning it was much like realizing that an old friend is gone, never to return.

I believe the very first outcomes of this decision will be more erosion of the status of women as citizens. The second will be a further sharpening of the divide in this country.

Make no doubt that this is only the first in what many suspect will be a mass overturning of cases that advanced civil and personal rights in this country over the past 80 years. Expect homosexual marriage to be a target very quickly. Will interracial marriage also be a target? Probably, though in a couched way.

How about the ability to simply buy birth control over the counter in a drug store? Surely that will be a target.

Some may have missed it, but Miranda rights took a hit in Thursday’s decisions. Not completely gone, but eroded.

This court is on a revenge tour. Because of their ages this group may have as much as another 20 years together to wreak havoc on our rights.

Many have predicted that even Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas will be overturned. They will certainly be looking for cases to do so. Remember one man, one vote? Perhaps one of the most basic of civil rights cases. Do not be surprised if that is challenged.

As we come up on July 4th, don’t forget that the very basis of the Revolution was laws being imposed without representation. You have the power to make a difference, but you have to vote! And you have to vote against the forces that have brought the current situation to be.

If there is one person who should have blame heaped on him, that is Chuck Grassley. His refusal to grant Merrick Garland a nomination hearing for a seat on the SCOTUS blatantly ignored the dictates of the constitution. His refusal to act in a constitutional manner and to get away with it by being re-elected was the first move in packing the SCOTUS with reactionary members.

But sadly, voters who did not take the threat of what would happen if Hillary Clinton were not elected are also at fault. Donald Trump was a man who cared little about our country. He inflicted severe damage on our country and with his SCOTUS appointments his legacy of disaster will carry on for decades.

VOTE AS IF YOUR LIVES DEPEND ON IT, BECAUSE IT DOES!

Kick Out The Traitors And Sympathizers

Adam Schiff’s closing speech Tuesday (3:30)

The January 6th Special Committee has done a masterful job of putting together the time line and the actions and actors that led to the full blown attempt at overthrowing the legitimately elected government of the United States on January 6th, 2021.

There is little doubt that the moving force behind the attempted overthrow of government was the then sitting president, Donald Trump. There was little doubt on that day who the moving force behind the coup attempt. It was pretty much out in the open.

Even immediately after, Republican leader Kevin McCarthy pointed to Trump as the instigator:

“The president bears responsibility for Wednesday’s attack on Congress by mob rioters,” McCarthy said on the House floor. “He should have immediately denounced the mob when he saw what was unfolding. These facts require immediate action by President Trump.”

As did Senate Republican Leader Mitch McConnell:

“Following Saturday’s vote acquitting former President Donald Trump, Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., excoriated Trump for his actions on the day of the attack on the U.S. Capitol, calling them a “disgraceful dereliction of duty.”

But he said ultimately, he did not vote to convict the former president because of constitutional concerns.

“There’s no question, none, that President Trump is practically and morally responsible for provoking the events of the day,” McConnell said shortly after the 57-43 Senate vote that ended in the former president’s acquittal.

“The people who stormed this building believed they were acting on the wishes and instructions of their president,” he said, “and having that belief was a foreseeable consequence of the growing crescendo of false statements, conspiracy theories and reckless hyperbole which the defeated president kept shouting into the largest megaphone on planet Earth.”

It was clear January 6th and is being made strikingly more clear now. Yet Iowa’s Republican delegation chose to ignore what was plainly obvious. Senators Grassley and Ernst ignored the obvious and voted to acquit the traitor. Grassley:

“We do not have the authority to try a private citizen like former President Trump. Even if we did, he should have been accorded the protections of due process of law in his trial. And even if we assume he has been, the House Managers still did not prove that he committed incitement to insurrection, the specific crime of which he stands accused. This does not excuse President Trump’s conduct on and around January 6th of this year,” Grassley said in a statement. “It satisfies my oath as a U.S. Senator in this court of impeachment. I therefore voted to acquit.”

Ernst:

Ernst released a statement on Twitter saying in part: “The bottom line for this impeachment trial: Donald Trump is no longer in office, he is a private citizen.”

Iowa’s Republicans in the House did little better:

“Republican Rep. Ashley Hinson said in a statement Wednesday she believes the president does bear responsibility for the riots, but said impeachment is the wrong path forward.

Republican Rep. Randy Feenstra said he will be voting against impeachment. Mariannette Miller-Meeks also said she opposes impeachment.”

Note to Grassley and Ernst – Trump was the President when he committed his treason. That he was a private citizen when the vote was taken did not matter. That is the way justice works.

There was little Iowans could do at the time to let these people know that their decision to let Trump commit a crime and be let free was wrong. But time marches on and we are now looking at an election. All 5 of Iowa’s Republicans must be held accountable for their votes to send a person who tried to overthrow OUR government free. Because of them, Trump and his fellow traitors are planning the next coup.

If our laws mean nothing, then why even have laws? Grassley, Ernst, Miller-Meeks, Hinson and Feenstra all made a public display of their disdain for our laws. For that reason alone they must be defeated at the polls and WE THE PEOPLE must reassert that we are a nation of laws!

Grassley and the Republican delegation have shown they do not have the judgment to hold the highest elected positions in this country. When they are called on to make decisions for the good of the country their judgment must not be clouded by their loyalty to a person over the country.

The Second Amendment Is Not Good Enough For Republicans

Iowa State Capitol.

Republican lawmakers passed an amendment to the Iowa Constitution which will appear on the Nov. 8 ballot. I urge readers to vote no.

According to House Majority Leader Matt Windschitl, “The Freedom Amendment is the proposal to enshrine in our state constitution protections for our Second Amendment rights.”

Most Americans appreciate the Bill of Rights. So do I. Here’s the Second Amendment:

“A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.”

What Republicans propose isn’t the same:

“The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. The sovereign state of Iowa affirms and recognizes this right to be a fundamental individual right. Any and all restrictions of this right shall be subject to strict scrutiny.”

Whoa buddy! This isn’t the language written by the founders in 1789. It is lawyered up with terms like “sovereign state” and “strict scrutiny.”

Republicans are tampering with our Second Amendment rights. They would infringe on rights that stood since the founders wrote them and the states ratified the Bill of Rights.

Readers should pay attention on Nov. 8 and vote no on this bogus constitutional amendment that reduces our rights, protecting nothing.

Will Our Democracy Survive?

Nicholas Johnson speaking at Prairie Lights Books in Iowa City

The Day Democracy Died: Listening to Washington and McLean

by Nicholas Johnson
published with permission

George Washington warned his “Friends and Fellow-Citizens” there could be days like this in his farewell address of September 19, 1796. Political parties could become “potent engines by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled . . . to usurp for themselves the reins of government.” [Photo credit: wikimedia commons; Gilbert Stuart painting.]

Individuals may then “seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction . . . turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation on the ruins of public liberty.”

“[L]et there be no change by usurpation; . . . it is the customary weapon by which free governments are destroyed.”

Are you old enough to remember the lyrics to Don McLean’s song, “American Pie,” about “the day the music died”?

It will be nothing to sing about, but we’re headed toward “the day democracy died.” Some say it’s already dead. “The day democracy died” was January 6, 2021.

It’s more complicated than that.

Like preparing your garden soil in the spring, a democracy can only grow in a nation with, one, a civil society of non-governmental and non-business organizations – from Rotary Clubs to garden clubs, trade unions to Wordle groups. And, two, people who understand and reject authoritarian rule, and affirmatively seek democracy (as we discovered after 20 unsuccessful years in Afghanistan).

The first was found in America by de Tocqueville and published in 1835 in his “Democracy in America.”

The second was made clear by Thomas Jefferson in the 1776 Declaration of Independence, listing and charging the “King of Great Britain [with] a history of repeated injuries and usurpations, all having in direct object the establishment of an absolute Tyranny.“

Many components, properly assembled and maintained, can become a car. Similarly, a democracy only emerges with the assembly and maintenance of components. A non-political, respected judiciary. A trusted electoral system, expanding participants and easing voting.

Thomas Jefferson considered independent media so essential to democracy that choosing “government without newspapers, or newspapers without a government, I should not hesitate a moment to prefer the latter.”

George Washington thought education a component. “In proportion as the structure of a government gives force to public opinion, it is essential that public opinion should be enlightened.”

How to destroy a democracy? As the Nazi Hermann Goering explained, “it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship . . .. It works the same in any country.”

The authoritarian’s playbook isn’t complicated. You destroy the public’s trust in its democratic institutions. Promote divisiveness, fear and anger. Repeat “the big lie” until it’s believed by the faithful. Convince the public the media is “the enemy of the people.”

Or, as in Iowa currently, you attack the public education system, prescribe the books and subjects that can and can’t be taught, reduce the appropriations, demonize the teachers.

It works the same in any country. Including ours. Just like George Washington warned us.

How We Got Here

Check out this interview with Anne Nelson, author of Shadow Network: Media, Money and the Secret Hub of the Radical Right. She explains in fascinating yet shocking detail exactly how we got here and why the right’s use of the media is so important. She makes some fair points about Democrats’ lack of a pro-active strategy without bashing them and she poses interesting questions such as why did the Democrats abandon radio.

Wanted: Democratic Candidates in Seven Iowa Senate Districts

Senator Rob Hogg

Important message from Senator Rob Hogg:

Help win back the Iowa Senate

After the primary, here is the lineup of Iowa Senate Democratic candidates who need your support.

Dear Iowans:

Now that the primary is over, it is time to support our Democratic candidates so we can win in November.

Statewide, our ticket is led by Admiral Mike Franken for U.S. Senate and Deidre DeJear for Governor. Please do what you can to support them by volunteering, speaking up, and contributing as you are able.

At the legislative level, here is the lineup of candidates who need our support so we can take back the Iowa Senate (by district, name, and city or town in the district, *incumbent):

SD1 – Jackie Smith* (Sioux City)
SD11 – Lisa Fleishman (Indianola)
SD13 – Matt Greiner (Ottumwa)
SD14 – Sarah Trone Garriott* (West Des Moines-Dallas County)
SD15 – Tony Bisignano* (Des Moines)
SD16 – Claire Celsi* (West Des Moines-Polk County)
SD17 – Izaah Knox (Des Moines)
SD19 – Tyler Stewart (Newton)
SD21 – Todd Brady (Ankeny)
SD23 – Matt Pries (Grimes)
SD25 – Herman Quirmbach* (Ames)
SD27 – Sam Cox (Grinnell)
SD30 – Whitney Mixdorf (Mason City)
SD31 – Bill Dotzler* (Waterloo)
SD33 – Matt Robinson (Dyersville)
SD37 – Molly Donahue (Marion)
SD39 – Liz Bennett (Cedar Rapids)
SD40 – Todd Taylor* (Cedar Rapids)
SD41 – Deb VanderGaast (Tipton)
SD42 – Jessica Wiskus (Lisbon)
SD43 – Zach Wahls* (Coralville)
SD45 – Janice Weiner (Iowa City)
SD46 – Kevin Kinney* (Oxford)
SD47 – Mary Kathleen Figaro (Bettendorf)
SD49 – Cindy Winckler (Davenport)

Because this is the first election under the new redistricting map, there are 34 seats in the Iowa Senate up for election. If Democrats can win 21 of those seats, we can force a 25-25 tie and give Democrats a meaningful say in state government again. If we can win more, we will be back in the majority. We need to reclaim a seat at the table for working families, public schools, women’s rights, health care, public health and safety, family farmers, and clean energy and clean water solutions.

In addition to the candidates who won their primaries, Democrats can still nominate candidates from Senate District conventions where we don’t yet have a candidate. I have been told that is already expected in two districts (SD29 which includes Waverly and SD35 which includes Clinton). Other districts where Democrats are still looking for Iowa Senate candidates include SD3 (Storm Lake), SD4 (Fort Dodge), SD5 (Emmetsburg), SD6 (Carroll), SD7 (Onawa), SD9 (Atlantic), and SD44 (Fairfield). If you hear of candidates who are seeking nomination by convention in those districts, please let me know.

So pick your favorite Iowa Senate Democratic candidates to support. In addition, you can contribute to Senate Democratic Leader Zach Wahls who can allocate those resources to the candidates who are most likely to win with extra help. (Senator Wahls currently does not have an opponent, and even if he did, he would be able to win without needing to spend contributions on himself.)

Here is a link where you can contribute to help Zach take back the Iowa Senate:

Please contribute today as you are able and help us take back the Iowa Senate.

Kim Reynolds, How Can You Be So Blind?

Tuesday, Iowa’s current governor, Kim Reynolds, announced that she will use $100 million to create he “Governor’s School Safety Bureau.” This bureau will be involved in distributing funds for a ‘School Safety Improvement Fund’ of up to $50,000 per school building for Iowa’s 1500 K-12 buildings.

In announcing the program, Reynolds made a statement that was incredible for its lack of understanding of what the problem is:

“Mass shootings and other violent acts committed against innocent people are difficult to understand,” said Gov. Reynolds “But work must be done to answer the question why they happen and what can be done to prevent this type of behavior.”

Well, Governor, let us start with the easy availability of guns and killing machines like the AK47 and the AR15. These are weapons of war. They should not be carried around in an open society casually threatening peaceful citizens. Reynolds apparently must believe in the myth of the “good guy with a gun.” Once the bullets start flying they do not make judgments on who they hit.

Good guys, bad guys, police, women, children, dogs and cats all die from bullets. The lucky ones may survive with permanent injuries including mental problems.

Experts in Iowa, in the US and across the world have proven that easy access to guns is the underlying cause to the country’s murder and suicide epidemic. When will people like Kim Reynolds quit sacrificing our lives in the altar of the gun lobby and finally face reality? I certainly hope their lives do not have to be altered by a gun for reality to set in.

Progress Iowa sent out an excellent email on Reynolds announcement:

STATEMENT: Reynolds’ school safety plan won’t keep kids safe

Des Moines, Iowa — Progress Iowa Executive Director Matt Sinovic issued the following statement in response to Governor Reynolds’ announcement that she’s using $100 million in ARPA and ESSER funds for a new school safety plan:

“Iowans are devastated by the gun violence taking place across our country and in our own communities. We’re frustrated with politicians passing the buck and want our leaders to take action and enact universal background checks and limit access to assault weapons in order to help save lives.

“But instead, Governor Reynolds continues to politicize the lives of children with her new school safety plan, that uses funding she opposed. This plan does nothing to actually keep guns out of schools.

“It’s time the Governor listens to students, educators and parents who are demanding common-sense gun laws to prevent violence in our schools and communities.”

This year when you vote, remember that Iowa’s governor can be very influential on state and notional gun policy. Replacing Kim Reynolds with a leader who will deal with guns in a realistic way would send a big message to the country that we are sick and tired of politicians who choose guns over people.

A vote for Diedre DeJear would send a loud and strong message for children and for common-sense gun laws. DeJear is realistic about the causes of gun violence.

Sunday Funday: Juneteenth Edition

Juneteenth explained (2:30):

Today is the date that has been traditionally celebrated as the date that former slaves in the most remote parts of the South – specifically Texas – learned that they were no longer enslaved. Some refer to this as America’s second Independence Day. Despite the significance, Juneteenth until recently has been an almost invisible holiday.

Unfortunately, the freedom that Juneteenth celebrates has been mostly invisible also. Slow and grudging progress has been going on, mostly since WWII, but the resurgence of overt racism spurred by the previous president seems to have progress stalled, of not somewhat reversed.

Some may be surprised to learn that Iowa was one of the early states to recognize Juneteenth as a holiday. Until the return of Branstadt as governor, Iowa was frequently a leader in equality. On April 11, 2002 Governor Tom Vilsack signed legislation recognizing Juneteenth as a state Holiday. National legislation was just passed a year ago and signed into law by President Biden.
