Advocacy Item for the Week

Please call Senator Ernst (202-224-3254) and Senator Grassley (202-224-3744) to urge them to stop the partisan attack on health care, to work with Democrats to improve health care, and to support the disaster relief, recovery, and prevention of future damage that is so urgently needed for so many people affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma, and Maria, and the drought and western wildfires.

And one last reminder from Senator Hogg:  Don’t forget, campaigns cost money.

Fundraising is an essential part of the comeback Democrats need in the 2018 elections. It costs money to run campaign operations and, most importantly, to communicate with busy and independent voters, especially for state legislative races that do not get as much media coverage as other races.

Please take a moment and figure out what you can afford to contribute over the next 13 months to finance Democratic campaigns for the state legislature, both House and Senate, as well as Congressional and gubernatorial campaigns. Your financial support is critical to allow Democrats to compete statewide and give Iowa voters a choice in the 2018 elections.

Joni Ernst Says She Is Likely Yes Vote On Graham-Cassidy

Senator Joni Ernst said Saturday at a town hall meeting in Iowa City that she will likely vote yes to the Graham-Cassidy health care repeal legislation in the “unlikely” event that it comes up for a vote.   Check out more videos of constituent questions on Blog for Iowa’s new YouTube channel.

Why Would The Senate Vote To Kill ACA When No One Wants That To Happen?

7 minutes

Just a thought passing though my mind after another day of getting no answer from the Ernst office once again and the usual surly response at the Grassley office. I have a couple questions and some ruminations about what happens to this current horrible attempt at repealing all remnants of anything the black guy did.

One question is that if the senate passes the Graham-Cassidy amendment, what is the next part of the process? Will the bill need to go back to the full House for a re-vote? Or since some form of a Republicans-Destroy-Healthcare bill has already has passed in the House will it simply go to a joint conference committee?

If the House can avoid another roll call vote this will certainly be less damaging for those who will be voting to take away health care for 30 million + Americans. No doubt House leadership is doing all it can to provide cover for the members who really want to screw their constituents without the constituents ever feeling a thing.

The good thing that we have seen so far is that leadership of the far right radical party is pretty inept these days. So our hope is that their attempts to provide cover will blow up like an inflatable boat and everyone will see it. With all eyes watching about a year before the next election a vote to take away health care from Americans is not going to be popular. That vote will be so onerous it will still be fresh in voters minds a year from now.

Even though the corporate media will do all it can to divert attention from this vote, it will be one that a majority of constituents will see children, brothers, sisters, mom and dad and uncles, aunts and parents lose some major part of their healthcare to this bill. And they will not forget in a year it will be so onerous.

So why would radical far right politicians risk a vote that is likely to be hated by 90% of their voters?

Well they do have some tricks up their sleeves.

The very first trick is voter suppression. Suppressing those voters who will most likely vote against Republicans is the hottest game in town. Apparently it works and works well because red states are making it more and more difficult for citizens to vote.

The next trick is gerrymandering or setting up districts in such a way as to ‘enhance’ your party’s chance of winning. Once again we can see that gerrymandering has certainly distorted the shape of our representation in Washington. While Republicans won 51.5% of the total votes in this country for the US House they have 55.2% of the votes in the chamber.

The last trick I will mention is money. Back during the first round of attempting to cut healthcare, the Koch brothers let it be known that they would open up its checkbook if the ACA is repealed (replaced? not so much) and tax “reform” is enacted. The Kochs political arm is talking in numbers like $300 to $400 million dollars. That is enough to totally finance a majority of the House races for radical right wingers.

$400 million will buy huge amount of television ads. TV ads are what passes for campaigns in most districts these days. For most Americans these days, the perception of reality that is sold to them by television becomes their reality. In order to create the perception that candidates want they need money and the Kochs have it.

However, the Kochs and others are pulling the purse strings closed until they get something to show for their money. As noted here:

There was a sense of deep frustration from conservative officials and donors alike, decrying the pace of progress in Washington with Republicans controlling both chambers of Congress and the White House for the first time in a decade.

[Doug] Deason has already informed a handful of congressional Republicans that the “Dallas piggy bank” is closed until he sees more action. He said he was recently approached by congressmen Mark Meadows of North Carolina and Jim Jordan of Ohio about hosting a fundraiser.

“I said, ‘No I’m not going to because we’re closing the checkbook until you get some things done,’” Deason said, noting he’s encouraged nearly two dozen major Texas donors to follow his lead.

While some donors threatened to withhold campaign cash, Koch’s team outlined a broader strategy to help shape the debate. Already, Americans For Prosperity claims a paid staff of more than 400 full-time activists in 36 states.

For the far right, the bottom line for everything is money, especially rewarding their donors. So the push now is to pass a horrible health care bill and then take the money stolen from the children, the infirm and the aged to give their super rich donors huge tax cuts.

Then they can take money from those who got the tax cuts from money stolen from children, the infirm, the aged and all others to shape the perception through the super mesmerizing medium of television.

Perception is reality. As Marshall McLuhan said nearly half a century ago “the medium is the message.” So they will do whatever horrid action they wish and then use the medium to tell us it is good for us. With the power of the medium, many, many will believe.

REYNOLDS BUDGET CRISIS FORCES IOWA TO BORROW MILLIONS

Borrowing $13 million to cover budget shortfall like ‘rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic’

Des Moines, Iowa — Progress Iowa today called on Iowans to take action, releasing a new website to highlight the Reynolds Budget Crisis that has the state to borrow millions in order to cover for the fiscally irresponsible corporate giveaways put into place by Governor Reynolds.

Click here to view the website, which will be promoted in targeted online ads statewide: www.reynoldsbudgetcrisis.com

Progress Iowa Executive Director Matt Sinovic issued the following statement in response to the announcement made today by the Departments of Management and Revenue that millions must be borrowed due to the Reynolds Budget Crisis:

“Borrowing millions to cover for the Reynolds budget crisis is like rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic, avoiding accountability for her fiscal irresponsibility. The Reynolds budget crisis has reached such a tipping point that the Governor and legislature will be forced to borrow millions to get out of debt. This crisis was created by years of doling out tax giveaways, and we are calling on Iowans to speak out to ensure this debt will not be resolved with further attacks on Iowa’s working families.”

“Iowans are already suffering because of Governor Reynolds’ budget mismanagement, with less access to health care, underfunded schools, and even stooping to a new low of refusing overtime pay for some public employees.”

“It’s shameful that Governor Reynolds continues to prioritize corporate handouts over everyday Iowans. Our students don’t have the resources they need and families are struggling to make ends meet. Moving forward, Governor Reynolds must stop tilting the scale in favor of businesses who aren’t paying their fair share, and restore fiscal responsibility in the budget to address the needs of Iowans.”

Progress Iowa is a multi-issue progressive advocacy organization with a network of nearly 70,000 progressives. Year-round, Progress Iowa advocates for a stronger middle class, first-class public education, and fairness for all Iowans under the law. For more information, visit progressiowa.org.

Equifax: This Is A Huge Thing

20 minutes –

Based on the relatively small amount of coverage given by corporate media you would get the impression that the theft of vital information from nearly 60% of adult Americans (see video above) is no big deal. If we had a responsible media this story would be covered on a daily basis with a reminder to be checking your accounts frequently.

Also as noted in the video, this is not a short term problem. This will be something that may roll out over decades.

If you have followed this at all you know that Equifax just released the information about the data breach after SITTING ON THE STORY FOR NEARLY TWO MONTHS!!!! And while they were sitting on this story, the officers of the company dumped their stock fully knowing that had information the public did not have.

Don’t forget that party that loves business has done all they could to kill the one small slice of protection that our government currently offers against corporate predators like Equifax. That would be the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) that was born in the mind of Sen. Elizabeth Warren and is headed by the brilliant Richard Cordray.

Remember also that the three credit rating corporations, Equifax, Experion and Transunion have credit information on nearly every American even though few ever knowingly gave that information to those companies. Don’t think you did business with one of these companies. You are in for a surprise!

Since another blogger has done an excellent job of putting my frustrations to words, I shall borrow a few paragraphs from him. From Clete Wetli at al.com:

Months after discovering that the personal data of over 143 million Americans had been hacked, the credit rating company Equifax finally decided to let consumers know that their data had been stolen. Well, that’s not entirely accurate. They announced that a breach had occurred and that they would let consumers find out if they had been affected, provided they do one tiny little thing. That teeny tiny thing happened to be waiving any legal rights to pursue action against Equifax for not properly protecting their personal data.

That’s almost as good a deal as getting the one year’s worth of free credit monitoring so you can learn how your personal data is being exploited and not being able to do much about it. There’s probably a legal disclaimer on that, too, preventing you from taking any substantive action or getting any type of justice.

You probably should have thought about all that when you signed up for Equifax. Oh, that’s right you didn’t because no one ever asked you. That’s just the price of having a credit rating, whether you like it or not. Trust me, it’s all buried in the fine print somewhere.

This is just fabulous news for consumers after the Wells Fargo fraud where millions of people were signed up unknowingly for financial products. After their initial investigation where they claimed they had identified all the customers affected, Wells Fargo now says it involved several million more. Ooops. Well, they offered refunds to all the customers they bilked so everything should just be fine, right? The bank is still making enormous profits even after all their payouts to customers for ripping them off.

{snip}

The move to quell class-action lawsuits by Equifax shows how large companies care very little about doing the right thing. They’re only worried about their bottom line and damage control.

I heartily recommend clicking on the link to read the whole article.

Over at downwithtyranny.blogspot.com Gaius Publius says the best thing you can do is:

Put a “security freeze” on each of the three major credit bureaus

A security freeze (aka “credit freeze”) will prevent the credit bureaus from selling your data to anyone. It will not prevent hackers from stealing that info, but it will make it very difficult for them – or for those who buy that data from them – to use this data to open credit accounts in your name and steal your identity. If they submit your data to a credit card company to apply in your name for a credit card, the credit card company checks with credit bureaus to confirm this information and review your credit. But since there is a credit freeze on your account, Equifax cannot disclose that information, and the credit card company will not open an account in your name.

Note: Even if you try to open a new bank account or credit account, you will not be able to, unless you first remove the credit freeze. Credit freezes do not impact current banking and credit relationships; they continue as normal.

Here are the pages of the three major credit bureaus where you can request or lift a security freeze: Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian.

Let me add that you need to make a note to check your financial information regularly. The media will be done with this story soon if they aren’t already and government in the hands of corporate stooges doesn’t care if you are robbed blind.

Opponents to Rally Ahead of Ernst Iowa City Town Hall

http://qctimes.com/news/state-and-regional/iowa/opponents-to-rally-ahead-of-ernst-iowa-city-town-hall/article

IOWA CITY — U.S. Sen. Joni Ernst’s “bosses” plan to give her a piece of their mind Friday when the Iowa Republican has a town hall meeting at the University of Iowa.

“You claim you host town halls to listen and explain your positions, but really you parrot alt-right talking points and have no interest in hearing from the people you claim to represent,” reads an open letter to Ernst from Action Iowa, Indivisible Iowa, Hawkeyes for Dream Iowa, Iowa Action and Americans for Democratic Action Iowa.

“We are ready for your town hall; we plan to reclaim our time,” they wrote, identifying the groups “as your bosses.”

“Reclaim our time” is a reference to California Rep. Maxine Waters’ “reclaiming my time” comment when a Trump administration official rambled without answering the Democrat’s question during a congressional hearing.

The rally ahead of Ernst’s town hall forum in the University of Iowa Memorial Union “will focus on communicating to Sen. Ernst that our community needs adequate health care, comprehensive immigration reform and affordable college tuition,” according to a post on Action Iowa’s Facebook page.

The rally is planned for 2 p.m. on the lawn of the Memorial Union, 125 N. Madison St. Ernst’s forum will be at 2:30 inside the union.

Rally speakers include: Adelaide Zwick on behalf of Student Advocates for Planned Parenthood; Johnson County Supervisor Mike Carberry; Emiliano Martinez of Hawkeyes for Dream Iowa; Iowa City Council candidate Ryan Hall; and Elizabeth Dinschel, a Coralville City Council candidate.

Dream Iowa will distribute letters written by students who are recipients of DACA — the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program — in hopes they are read during Ernst’s forum, according to Martinez, the group’s president and a university student.

“Our goal is to put people back into this process and publicly lobby our issues by telling the stories behind the political rhetoric,” he said.

Ernst, a first-term Republican, does not support citizenship for DACA recipients but has called for compassion for them and respect for immigration laws.

Several of Ernst’s town hall meetings have been characterized by shouting, chanting and disruptive behavior.

Martinez said DACA recipients do not believe in disrupting forums.

“Our mission is to bring purpose and insight into bringing the issues of Iowa taxpayers to the forefront of the conversation,” he said.
