President Pete Has A Ring To It

NBC News, MSNBC and Telemundo will host the first 2020 presidential primary debate in June of 2019. This is the first in a series of BFIA’s coverage and commentary of the announcement speeches by the declared Democratic candidates for president for 2020.

Sunday Mayor Pete Buttigieg announced his candidacy for president of the United States from his home town of South Bend, Indiana in front of an enthusiastic, cheering crowd.  This is historically significant as he is the first openly gay candidate to run for the office.  While he did not make being gay the centerpiece of his speech, he made no attempt to keep anyone in the dark about the fact of it and very conventionally introduced his husband, Chasten, to his supporters.  Btw, they have two rescue dogs, Buddy and Truman.

Everyone knows him as the mayor of South Bend, Indiana but it is less well known that Pete served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Navy Reserve and took an unpaid seven-month leave during his mayoral term to deploy to Afghanistan. For his counter-terrorism work, he earned the Joint Service Commendation Medal.  He was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford and a graduate of Harvard University.   Link

I found his announcement to be an honest, thoughtful, well-constructed speech. Conventional in some ways, unconventional in others.   He was not edgy in tone, but he was crystal clear on where he stands.  I liked that he provided his vision of the way forward without using boring, cliche Democratic talking points.  He was able to be positive while letting us know that he gets the urgency of our current moment. I got the feeling he is up to the challenge of getting our country moving forward in the post-Trump era.

That’s why I’m here today. To tell a different story than make America great again.  Because there’s a myth being sold to industrial and rural communities. They’re selling an impossible promise of returning to a bygone era. They’re telling us to look for greatness in all the wrong places.. It is time to walk away from the politics of the past and walk toward something totally different. So that’s why I’m here today.

I recognize the audacity of doing this as a midwestern millennial mayor… at age 37 to seek the highest office in the land.. Up until recently, this is not exactly what I had in mind either for how I was going to spend my 8th year as mayor and 38th year in this world. But we live in a moment that compels us each to act. The forces changing our country today are tectonic. The forces that help to explain what made this current presidency even possible. That’s why this time it’s not just about winning an election. It’s about winning an era.

Iowa In The Bull’s Eye Of Climate Change

Senator Joe Bolkcom speaks on the floor of the senate about the effects of climate change in Iowa. Watch the 11-minute video for even more sobering climate change information specific to our state.

“Iowa’s weather and climate have changed right before our eyes.

We are spending like crazy to adapt to climate change that is already here.

What does the future hold?

U.S.  climate scientists are projecting by mid-century in Iowa, five day heat wave temperatures will increase by about 7 degrees fahrenheit and will increase by 13 degrees fahrenheit once per decade. Today an average heat wave is 90-95 degrees for five days.  So 7 degrees a couple times a decade would raise those temps to 100-102 degrees. If we had once a decade where temps were 13 degrees higher, temps would be 108-112 degrees for five days. Now I’m not an ag guy but I don’t know how you keep a hog cool when it’s 110 degrees without air conditioning.

US Climate scientists also suggest that the strongest rainfall events of the year covering areas as large as a third of Iowa are projected to double in intensity by mid century with most of that change coming before 2025.

What are we doing proactively? Unfortunately, not very much.

About That $93 Trillion Green New Deal

While our senator makes stuff up, AOC discusses reality.

You may remember about a month ago that Senator Joni Ernst sent out one of her ridiculous “Make ‘em Squeal” newsletters about the Green New Deal. Without any supporting evidence she claimed the cost would be $93 Trillion.

I wrote her asking where she came up with those figures along with discussing many of the consequences of not dealing with climate change. As expected, I have received no answer. If and when I do receive I expect there will no real answers to my questions, just some high faluting gobble-de-gook.

Republicans often throw out wild numbers that appear to be just made up for shock value. But as a party they do keep some kind of consistency with their outrageous statements. Ernst’s newsletter was not the only place we saw the $93 Trillion price tag. That was the party line. Made me wonder who made this number up and how it became the standard crazy number.

So I went looking and guess what I found? A right wing think tank throwing some guesstimates around that they appear to have pulled from their nether regions. What a surprise.

“President Trump’s claim that the Green New Deal would cost $100 trillion can be traced back to the Manhattan Institute, a think tank backed by fossil fuel investor Paul Singer and companies like ExxonMobil.

Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Senator Edward Markey made waves at a press conference in February when they rolled out a Green New Deal resolution that called for the nation to transition to 100 percent clean energy in ten years.

Brian Riedl, a senior fellow at the New York-based Manhattan Institute, attempted to “cost out the Green New Deal” in a Twitter thread the next day. Riedl admitted he had “No idea” how much things like “Installing renewable energy everywhere” would cost.

Trying to cost out the Green New Deal

Before getting to “green policies” there is a call for

-Single payer ($32T)

-Jobs guarantee ($7T)

-What looks like UBI for poor ($5T+)

-Education, family leave, job training, retirement security, etc ($2T)

So $46T *before* Green (1/

gFkBCoiS_normal.jpg

Brian Riedl

✔

@Brian_Riedl

How do we cost

-Replacing 250M gas vehicles? ($7T?)

-Killing most of 200k aircraft?

-Replacing military jets?

-High speed rail everywhere?

-Upgrade/replace 120M buildings?

-All the R&D? Installing renewables everywhere?

No idea…but must be heading towards $100 trillion.

Just in case you might have thought that for once the radical right wing actually did some real research and came up with some real honest dollar figures? Of course that would never happen. An honest researcher might also look at the economic stimulation that such a project might produce.

One should hardly be surprised that the Manhattan Institute is funded by the fossil fuel industry. Paul Singer, CEO of Elliot Management that lists coal as one of their major products, is the chair of the Manhattan Institute.

All of this just to point out that our senator just threw some pig manure numbers out to scare Iowa voters. Rather more likely one of her staff most likely posted that “Make ‘em Squeal” figuring no one would react. If so that staffer should lose their job. Almost have to wonder if Ernst even bothered to read it.

And Joni should lose her job for pulling horse crap like this. When you are one of only 100 people in the country with the power she has, her word must have some value. Apparently, Ernst has decided that the only value her voice has is to get Ernst re-elected.

We ain’t buying your phony baloney, Joni.

Donate to help defeat Ernst.

Sunday Funday: “We Don’t Pay No Stinkin’ Taxes” Edition

Image (1) pay-your-taxes-300x194.jpg for post 33499

Tomorrow is tax filing deadline day. This day always gets a lot of attention especially by the radical right wing media. They will go on and on about the poor oppressed corporations that provide jobs yet are taxed within a dollar of their existence. They will also go into spasms about how much the extremely rich pay in taxes.

As often happens this time of year we also get a list of corporations that paid no taxes. This year the list is presented to us by The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy (ITEP). Note that this list is not exhaustive. It is a list of Fortune 500 corporations THAT PAID NO FEDERAL TAXES.

Thanks to Iowa Policy Project we also have a list of corporations that paid no taxes in Iowa last year. You will not be surprised to find that the federal and state lists overlap.

There is only one thing to do as a patriotic American. Stand up proudly and shout it out: “I pay taxes so corporations and Dear Leader don’t have to!”   (inspired from this)

To ease the pain of paying your taxes so corporate and and Dear Leader don’t have to, here is the weekly quiz for distraction:

  1. Dear Leader called him “Dumbo.” What was this person’s job until Monday?
  1. Weeks seem to last years these days. Guess it was only a week ago when Dear Leader appealed to immigrants seeking asylum to turn around because what has happened to our country?
  1. Dear Leader’s administration now has how many “acting” secretaries and agency heads?
  1. For the second time in a month Iowa and the midwest were in the middle of what extreme weather event?
  1. There may be some real fireworks next week when a highly redacted version of what document is released to congress?
  1. Despite uttering the name of this website hundreds of time during the 2016, Thursday Dear Leader claimed he had no knowledge of what website?
  1. Despite being under indictment for corruption, what foreign leader’s party won parliamentary elections in Israel?
  1. AG William Barr claimed in a Senate committee hearing that our government did what to Dear Leader’s campaign?
  1. What Democratic presidential contender laid out a tax plan that would potentially make corporations pay taxes?
  1. What other Democratic presidential contender called out the “hypocrisy” of evangelicals voting for Dear Leader?
  1. Julian Assange was arrested by British police after he was expelled from his asylum in what country’s embassy?
  1. Members of the Senate Armed Services committee were very skeptical of the administration proposal to create what new branch of the military?
  1. A bill emerged in the Iowa senate last week that would raise the legal age from 18 to 21 for people buying products with what ingredient in Iowa?
  1. Dear Leader was very under impressed after a 45 minute tour of what national historic site?
  1. What major retailer announced it will raise its minimum wage to $13/hour this June?
  1. The mayor of what major American city declared a state of emergency due to a major measles outbreak?
  1. What Democratic Party leader has been named the recipient of this year’s Kennedy Profile In Courage Award?
  1. Wednesday brought us a picture of what awe inspiring celestial body?
  1. The administration labeled what country’s Revolutionary Guard as a terrorist organization Monday?
  1. April 12th was supposed to be the day on which Great Britain would execute what referendum driven policy?

Ernst, Grassley, and Senate Republicans Are Selling A Scam On Pre-Existing Conditions

For Immediate Release: April 11, 2019

Contact: Matt Sinovic, (515) 423-0133

Image (1) progress-iowa.jpg for post 17381Des Moines, Iowa — Senate Republicans have spent ten years trying to eliminate the Affordable Care Act’s protections for people with pre-existing conditions. They support President Trump’s lawsuit to use the courts to gut these protections, and they voted time and time again for repealing health care on the floor of the U.S. Senate.

Now that voters have rejected these efforts, Senate Republicans have resorted to trying to deceive the American public by hiding behind a new bill, co-sponsored by Senators Joni Ernst and Chuck Grassley, that they wrongly claim will protect people with pre-existing conditions. The only problem? Their bill is a scam. And we already have a comprehensive pre-existing conditions protection bill – it’s called the Affordable Care Act.

joni-ernst-the-perfect-Koch-investment

Ernst and Grassley’s bill fails to protect people with pre-existing conditions and gives power back to insurance companies to charge women and older adults more and sell people plans that do not include coverage for prescription drugs, hospitalization, and maternity care. The bill claims to guarantee that people with pre-existing conditions would get the care they need and not be charged more. That is false.

Here is the Senate Republican vision for the 137 million Americans with a pre-existing condition:

Insurance companies would once again be able to refuse to cover essential health benefits like hospitalization and prescription drugs. If essential benefits such as hospitalization, mental health services, maternity care, and coverage for prescription drugs are not covered, consumers with pre-existing conditions are not adequately protected. Without this protection, someone with cancer may be sold a plan but denied prescription drug coverage.

Before the ACA, these kinds of restrictions were common: 75 percent of non-group plans did not cover maternity care, 45 percent did not cover substance abuse disorder services, and 38 percent did not cover mental health services. Six percent did not even cover generic drugs.

Insurance companies would once again be allowed to charge people more because of their gender or age. The ‘Protect Act’ would let insurance companies charge women more than

men and would let insurance companies charge older adults even more for care. Before the Affordable Care Act’s protections, women were often charged up to 50 percent more than men for the same coverage, and insurance companies were able to charge older adults even more for care. An AARP analysis estimated that without the ACA’s protections, a 60-year-old in the individual market would be charged an ‘age tax’ of $4,124 more per year.

People with pre-existing conditions would once again face the prospect of bankruptcy and insurance companies would have the power to restrict the amount of care someone can receive per year.

By eliminating the current protection against lifetime and annual limits, Republicans would let insurance companies cap the amount of care a patient may get. When annual and lifetime limits are imposed, people may be denied life-saving care simply because they have reached their limit.

“Medicare For None”

Screen shot from dailykos.com:
Medicare for none ScreenShot2019-04-10at10.18.48PM

From thehill.com

“Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said on Wednesday (4/10/2019) that “Medicare for All” will not move in the Senate as long as Republicans control the chamber.

“Not as long as I’m majority leader. It ought to be Medicare for none. … You want to turn America into a socialist country this is the first step,” McConnell told Fox News’s Brett Baier.

<< snip >>

McConnell’s comments come after Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) introduced his revamped “Medicare for All” legislation earlier Wednesday with the support of 14 Senate Democrats including four other presidential hopefuls. The bill would largely eliminate private insurance and institute a single-payer system managed by the government.”

And so Mitch McConnell finally lets out a not very well kept secret of the Republican Party. Along with doing anything they can to kill the ACA (aka Obamacare), Senate Leader McConnell said it out loud Wednesday for the world to hear: If they could, Republicans would end Medicare in any form.

This should come as no surprise. From the day Medicare was passed it has been a top Republican target. They just could never say so out loud since the program is so popular. You can feel assured that Medicaid is also on the targeted list.

Iowans, including over 600,000 currently on Medicare, need to take close note of what McConnell said. It was not a mere slip of the tongue, but essentially a policy pronouncement for the Republican Party. The reason Iowans need to pay attention to this is that we have two senators who almost always vote the party line. Senator Ernst is absolutely certain to vote the party line. She is up for re-election in 2020.

No matter what she claims on a stage or in an interview on backing any of the country’s insurances, her actions in the past will belie her words. She will be a solid vote to end Medicare, Medicaid, the ACA and Social Security if it ever gets to that. And then she will, much like Maine’s Susan Collins, have a basket of excuses on why she did what we knew she would do.

Want to keep Medicare? Medicaid? The ACA? You will be voting against your own interest and those of your family and friends if you vote for Ernst.

What will Republicans replace these programs with? The old health insurance for profit system that includes lifetime limits on payouts, pre-existing conditions with the grouping of people that makes the cost of insurance skyrocket as a person ages.

If I recall correctly, the Iowa legislature tries to adjourn by the end of April. With the lock Republicans have on government, it is doubtful they will run into any snags. They can pass anything and Reynolds will sign it and there isn’t a lot that Democrats can do about it. Unfortunate, but that is reality in Iowa these days.

This is also the time of legislature where, in the past several sessions, Republicans have brought extremely controversial legislation from nowhere to ram through. Let us hope there are no surprises this year as what they have done and are trying to do is bad enough.

Well, just got this fund raising email from the Iowa Democratic Party. Looks like IPERS may become a late session issue.

House Republicans found a back door approach to destroying Iowa’s pensions.

HSB 165 would cripple local government’s ability to fund IPERS and the 411 system, which is the retirement pension for our police and firefighters.

These pensions are strong and secure. They help hundreds of thousands of Iowans retire with dignity.

Hurry! We need your help to stop this before session ends!

State House Republicans want to end the retirement security of Iowans by killing IPERS and giving more handouts to the special interests and their millionaire friends.

It’s not surprise there are only THREE right-wing special interest groups that support this bill, including the Koch Brothers and Iowans for Tax Relief.

Can we count on you to make a $10 monthly donation to electing pro-IPERS members?

They thought they could confuse you. They thought you wouldn’t notice. Help us protect IPERS by sending them home!

Can we count on your $51 dollar investment to winning 51 seats?

With sincere thanks,

Michael DuPré

Loebsack Retiring

dave loebsack flag

From the Quad City Times:

“Dave Loebsack is retiring from Congress.

A Democrat from Iowa City who has represented eastern Iowa’s 2nd Congressional district since 2007, Loebsack made the announcement Friday afternoon.

Loebsack will retire from Congress at the end of this, his seventh term in Congress; he will not seek re-election in 2020.

“I have enjoyed beyond my expectations serving the people of Iowa’s 2nd District for the past 13 years,” Loebsack said in a statement. “Having grown up in poverty, I never would have imagined having the honor of serving as the voice of Iowans in the U.S. House of Representatives.”

All I can say right now is: Dave, thank you so much for what you have done for Iowa as a whole and the second district in particular.

There will be plenty of time to discuss his successor. His shoes will be hard to fill.

Progress Iowa Conducts Study Of Local Media

Kudos to  Progress Iowa for focusing on our problematic media. These are important findings. Once again, research confirming the obvious.

Latino, Native, Asian and African American Iowans Have Been Left Off Iowa Public Television’s ‘Iowa Press’ in 2019

With caucus season underway, Iowa’s political talk shows have failed to give voice to the diverse perspectives in our state, according to an analysis released today by the advocacy group Progress Iowa. According to data released, white men are given twice the airtime across episodes than all women of any race and approximately 15% of guests represent all of our communities of color.

Progress Iowa monitored guest appearances on political talk shows on television and radio in the Des Moines media market and on statewide broadcasts starting in January of 2019. In total there were 390 guests in 130 shows on Iowa Press (Iowa Public Television), The Insiders (WHO Channel 13), Close Up (KCCI Channel 8), This Week in Iowa (WOI Channel 5), Heartland Politics (KBUR News Radio), The Steele Report (KWWL Channel 7) and River to River episodes featuring political and legislative guests (Iowa Public Radio).

Among those 390 guests and 130 shows, Progress Iowa’s analysis discovered the following key findings:

  • Less than 15.4% of guests represented communities of color, while 84.6% of guests were white
  • White men represented 52% of guests with 203 appearances, and were three times more likely to appear than any person of color (60 appearances)
  • Only one episode featured a woman of color as the only guest; there were forty two episodes featuring white men as the only guests
  • Just 39% of all guests were women
  • White men were given twice the airtime as often as all women of any race (42 solo appearances compared to 20)

Additionally, the statewide program Iowa Press has not had any Latino, Native, Asian, or African American guests in 2019, and in 2018 only two non-white guests were on the show, State Representative Ras Smith, and Iowa Secretary of State candidate Deidre DeJear (former Iowa City Mayor Ross Wilburn appeared during a gubernatorial debate).

“If we aren’t intentional in ensuring that we seek to include a diverse range of individuals on our main media platforms, we can become an accomplice in projecting a lack of importance,” said Representative Smith. “I’ve been on the Steele report, Iowa Press and River to River in the last year. I’m grateful for the opportunity but would like to be less of an exception and more of the rule.“

“We know that people trust their local news more than other sources to tell them what they need to know, and one way that local news outlets can live up to the trust they’ve earned is by actively prioritizing representation on-air and fully embodying the communities they serve,” said Pam Vogel, deputy editorial director and local news expert at Media Matters for America. “I hope that this study will encourage local news outlets in Iowa and across the country to think critically about whose voices are represented in political commentary and to take solid measures to improve the conversation for all viewers.

“A representation of diverse voices is always important, especially as Iowa plays a critical role in deciding who will be the next President,” said Matt Sinovic, executive director of Progress Iowa. “And speaking as a straight white man, we’ve frankly heard enough from straight white men. It’s past time for all of us to do better and to lift up the voices of underrepresented communities.”

Click here to view the guests of each program by date, along with a summary of the data analyzed by Progress Iowa.

Progress Iowa will continue to monitor these and additional programs during 2019, and release updated figures each quarter.

IOWA MEDIA MONITOR – 2019 Guest Demographics

ADDITIONAL FINDINGS:

  • 84.6% of guests were white
  • 52.1% of guests were white men
  • 60.8% of guests were men
  • 39.2% of guests were women
  • 40% of episodes featured only male guests (52)
  • 32.3% of episodes featured only white male guests (42)
  • 15.3% of episodes featured only female guests (20)
  • 0.7% of episodes featured only guests who were women of color (1)
