“Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) said on Wednesday (4/10/2019) that “Medicare for All” will not move in the Senate as long as Republicans control the chamber.
“Not as long as I’m majority leader. It ought to be Medicare for none. … You want to turn America into a socialist country this is the first step,” McConnell told Fox News’s Brett Baier.

McConnell’s comments come after Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) introduced his revamped “Medicare for All” legislation earlier Wednesday with the support of 14 Senate Democrats including four other presidential hopefuls. The bill would largely eliminate private insurance and institute a single-payer system managed by the government.”
And so Mitch McConnell finally lets out a not very well kept secret of the Republican Party. Along with doing anything they can to kill the ACA (aka Obamacare), Senate Leader McConnell said it out loud Wednesday for the world to hear: If they could, Republicans would end Medicare in any form.
This should come as no surprise. From the day Medicare was passed it has been a top Republican target. They just could never say so out loud since the program is so popular. You can feel assured that Medicaid is also on the targeted list.
Iowans, including over 600,000 currently on Medicare, need to take close note of what McConnell said. It was not a mere slip of the tongue, but essentially a policy pronouncement for the Republican Party. The reason Iowans need to pay attention to this is that we have two senators who almost always vote the party line. Senator Ernst is absolutely certain to vote the party line. She is up for re-election in 2020.
No matter what she claims on a stage or in an interview on backing any of the country’s insurances, her actions in the past will belie her words. She will be a solid vote to end Medicare, Medicaid, the ACA and Social Security if it ever gets to that. And then she will, much like Maine’s Susan Collins, have a basket of excuses on why she did what we knew she would do.
Want to keep Medicare? Medicaid? The ACA? You will be voting against your own interest and those of your family and friends if you vote for Ernst.
What will Republicans replace these programs with? The old health insurance for profit system that includes lifetime limits on payouts, pre-existing conditions with the grouping of people that makes the cost of insurance skyrocket as a person ages.
