Protest Prior to Ernst Town Hall Saturday Morning

Action alert from Progress Iowa:

TOMORROW (Saturday) at 7 AM: Iowans to speak out against Ernst before town hall

Johnston, Iowa — Iowans will gather to speak out and hold Senator Joni Ernst accountable tomorrow, before her town hall meeting at Wallace Elementary in Johnston. The town hall meeting begins at 7:30 AM, and a press conference featuring everyday Iowans is planned for 7:00 AM.

Ernst went to Washington promising to “make them squeal” but has repeatedly voted to repeal the Affordable Care Act, which would prove disastrous for Iowans. It would result in thousands losing health care, and nearly 1.3 million in Iowa losing protections from insurance companies who could reject their coverage due to pre-existing conditions.

The statewide organizations Iowa Voices, AFSCME Council 61, Iowa Citizen Action Network, Tax March Iowa, Indivisible Iowa, and Progress Iowa are planning the press conference and encouraging Ernst’s constituents to attend the town hall meeting to ask questions of their Senator.

WHAT: Everyday Iowans speaking out against Ernst
WHEN: Saturday, August 17, 7:00 AM
WHERE: Wallace Elementary School, 6207 NW 62nd Ave, Johnston, Iowa

722 To 45,000: CAFOs And Candidates

CCI (Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement),  is leading the fight to do something about Iowa’s CAFO problem.  CCI is taking advantage of the Democratic presidential candidates’ presence in Iowa by lining up CAFO tours.  This is a great idea to educate candidates and bring attention to the problem. Hopefully, they get some local media attention.

In case you missed it, the explosion in the number of CAFOs in Iowa between 2001 and the present has basically ruined Iowa’s water and air quality.  According to a report by the Iowa Policy Project:

In 2001, there were 722 Iowa Department of Natural Resources permitted (93 percent hog) large CAFOs.  As of 2018, the number of animal facilities in the DNR database exceeds 10,000.

Livestock production is an important contributor to water degradation and goes unchecked. Manure leaks and spills are associated with fish kills, nitrate and ammonia pollution, antibiotics, hormones, bacterial contamination, algae blooms, water quality impairments, closed beaches and are a major contributor to the ‘dead zone’ in the Gulf of Mexico.

Continued CAFO expansion will only worsen these documented environmental impacts and must be part of the solution to Iowa’s widely recognized water quality problems.

According to an article in the Des Moines Register, the Iowa DNR has suggested Iowa can support 30,000 more CAFOs.

###

The State Fair wasn’t the only place candidates landed over the weekend!

On Saturday, 40 CCI Action leaders took Jane Sanders and Senator Bernie Sanders on a 90 minute factory farm tour so they could hear, see, and smell firsthand what it’s like to be surrounded by factory farms.

On top of that, we discussed the food and farm system we need; just like workers need a fair wage, farmers need a fair price for their work.

And, Sen. Sanders committed to attending the Iowa People’s Presidential Forum on September 21 here in Des Moines.

We’re working to line up similar factory farm tours and forum attendance with Senator Warren and other top polling candidates, so stay tuned for more details!

Trump Wants To Gut Endangered Species Act

Thom Hartmann

Thom Hartmann is the #1 progressive talk radio host in America.

The endangered species act, signed by Richard Nixon in 1973, has been one of the most successful defenses of the great web of life in the history of American legislation. It has prevented extinction for 99 percent of species under its protection and accomplished a 90 percent recovery rate in more than 100 species throughout the United States. As the Center for Biological Diversity notes, “The Act has allowed the designation of millions of acres of critical habitat, which is crucial to species’ survival and recovery.”

Which is exactly why Donald Trump’s billionaire developer, drilling, and mining buddies want to gut it. When Louise and I were in Alaska recently, we saw over 100 bald eagles; these birds were on the brink of extinction before the act helped ban DDT and bring them back.

Balancing Freedom And Regulation In The Age Of Social Media

by Ralph Scharnau

published with permission

Since 2005, the reputable Pew Research Center examined the expansion and effect of social media. The Center notes that in 2018 about 70% of American adults used some kind of social media platforms, dominated by the twin giants of Facebook and Twitter

Over the past decade, social media postings bear the imprint of a polarization of political discourse. Social networks have been a boon to partisans of every stripe—conservatives especially. Conservatives and liberals have taken to social media where sometimes they attack each other.

People around the world use social media. It plays an important role in social, civic, and political interactions. Launching protests, sharing health and scientific information, performing job-related tasks, connecting with family and friends, and getting news represent some of the ways that people use and depend on it.

Throughout the history of the tech industry in the United States, the government has been an important regulator, funder, and partner. Today, Silicon Valley has become the technological and entrepreneurial juggernaut of power and innovation.

But the wide spread use of social media also present us with complex and conflicting pressures. Rising user concerns have arisen about privacy, security, and the protection of personal information. Polls show that people have little trust in social media firms’ capacity or willingness to protect their data from the grasping tentacles of businesses and advertisers.

Besides, social media sites are often cited as places where people are harassed. Specific complaints include racial and immigrant slurs, a large amount of misinformation and lies, and an abundance of vile language.

The internet, sadly, has been a playground for illegal criminal activities like recruitment for terrorist groups, hacking into personal bank accounts, identity theft, and online scams. Some websites feature pornographic and violent content that can have a harmful impact, especially on children. Racist, discriminating, and hateful messages also have been spread online.

On the other hand, the World Wide Web offers freedom of expression. It provides people with access to abundant levels of information. It connects people and places around the globe.

Government agencies must balance the opportunities and challenges of social media. This means navigating the complex process of formulating social media policy development.

At its best, social media provides for self -expression and promotes mutual understanding. It enables rapid formation of networks and demonstrates our common humanity across cultural differences. It connects people, their ideas and values like never before.

Social media has become a crucial part of how we interact with our friends, community, and even run our cities. Social media platforms, particularly twitter, have become a type of soapbox in America where politicians speak directly to their constituents.

Social media in government is commonplace today. The web is a good way to share information and keep up with trending news. It can also be a very powerful way for public and private organizations to interact with folks.

Yet, too often social media resembles a list of post-it notes, not a conversation about the social and economic issues that divide us. Conservatives and liberals attract different groups of people. Conservatives get backing predominately from middle aged or older native-born white males. Women, people of color, and young tend to fill the ranks of liberals.

The World Wide Web is a combination of opportunities and challenges. While we embrace social media, we must find a way to regulate its ugly and harmful characteristics as well. The key is striking a reasonable, justified, and workable balance.

Why Hasn’t One Republican Stood Up And Called Out The Racism?

Former Republican Congressman David Jolly of Florida calling for Trumpublicans to be defeated next year on the Nicole Wallace Show on MSNBC Monday: (10 minutes)

The link between the Republican Party and racism and violence is not by any means new, it has simply intensified. In the video, former congress member Jolly lists incidents and the total lack of Republican response. With the NRA being one of the major funders of Republican candidates and one of their most reliable voting blocks, you certainly can’t expect Republicans to do anything that will upset the NRA.

As a matter of fact, the current president was warned by NRA CEO Wayne LaPierre not to push gun control legislation.

How did the Republican Party get itself so entangled with the racism and the gun violence? As with many of the current issues dealing with the Republican Party we can go back to Richard Nixon and his infamous “Southern Strategy” where he promised a hands off policy to Southern race issues in return for endorsements by southern politicians. That was in 1968. As you know, Nixon won and things have spiraled downhill since.

Last Monday, Paul Krugman in the New York Times opined that the connection between the Republican Party and racism is tied in with tax cuts:

The central story of U.S. politics since the 1970s is the takeover of the Republican Party by economic radicals, determined to slash taxes for the wealthy while undermining the social safety net.

With the arguable exception of George H.W. Bush, every Republican president since 1980 has pushed through tax cuts that disproportionately benefited the 1 percent while trying to defund and/or privatize key social programs like Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and the Affordable Care Act.

This agenda is, however, unpopular. Most voters believe that the rich should pay more, not less, in taxes, and want spending on social programs to rise, not fall.

So how do Republicans win elections? By appealing to racial animus. This is such an obvious fact of American political life that you have to be willfully blind not to see it. (bolding mine – ed.)

<<snip>>

In effect, then, the Republican Party decided that a few massacres were an acceptable price to pay in return for tax cuts. I wish that were hyperbole, but the continuing refusal of G.O.P. figures to criticize Trump even after El Paso shows that it’s the literal truth.

There is much more to Krugman’s article than what I have posted. Please go to the NYT and read the whole article.

Kevin Drum reported much the same thing a year ago in an article in Mother Jones magazine:

So this is where we are. The Republican Party can’t win using ordinary methods. On the process side, they can win only by inflating the white vote via gerrymandering, cracked-and-packed districts, and ruthless black voter suppression. On the policy side, they can win only with heavy dollops of strident and outright bigotry against Mexicans, Muslims, blacks, Hispanics, Chinese, and anyone else who comes along. Even Canadians will do in a pinch.

Today, the Republican Party exists for one and only one purpose: to pass tax cuts for the rich and regulatory rollbacks for corporations. They accomplish this using one and only method: unapologetically racist and bigoted appeals to win the votes of the heartland riff-raff they otherwise treat as mere money machines for their endless mail-order cons.

Like it or not, this is the modern Republican Party. It no longer serves any legitimate purpose. It needs to be crushed and the earth salted behind it, while a new conservative party rises to take its place. This new party should be conservative; brash; ruthless when it needs to be; as simpleminded as any major party usually is; and absolutely dedicated to making Democrats look like idiots. There should be no holds barred except for one: no appeals to racism. None. Not loud ones, not subtle ones. Whatever else it is, it should be a conservative party genuinely open to any person of any color.

Now to bring it all home to Iowa and our elections coming next year. The senseless slaughter of our own citizens is a top issue for many. We did not have children only to see them sacrificed on someone’s altar of politics. At the state level and at the national level gun control will be a major issue for possibly a majority. As you can see by the picture painted above, there are most likely no – I repeat NO – Republicans that will even consider gun control legislation.

We can look at two of Iowa’s most prominent politicians that will be up for reelection next year, The first would be current 4th district congress member Steve King. King’s racism is so stinky even his own party is ready to toss him.

Joni Ernst as far as I know said nothing concern guns or racism in the past week. If she did it apparently amounted to nothing. It is really hard to forget that Ernst’s election in her first race was aided with a huge assist from the NRA to the tune $3.1 million in advertising. As noted by the Iowa Starting Line in February of 2018:

Iowa Senator Joni Ernst is a national darling of the NRA’s effort to eliminate any and all meaningful gun safety laws that might keep children like those at Parkland, Florida from getting blown to pieces on a regular school day. Ernst received over $3.1 million in financial support from the NRA, the seventh-most of any senator, according to an analysis of campaign spending last October. Money from the gun rights organization poured into Iowa to help her get past the finish line in her race for Senate against Bruce Braley in 2014.

The NRA got what they paid for with Ernst, who then voted last February to stop a new rule that would have kept the mentally ill from obtaining guns through the background check system. Ernst voted in favor of House Joint Resolution 40, which sought to overturn a recent decision for the National Instant Criminal History Background Check System that would have kept people who considerable mental health issues from obtaining weapons. Both the House and Senate passed the resolution, and President Donald Trump signed it in February 2017.

Strike With Us (Climate Action)

globsl climate strike sept. 20 - 27

Tamara Toles O’Laughlin – 350.org <350@350.org>

Fri 8/9/2019 1:20 PM

Everywhere, the signs are clear: our climate is on the brink of collapse, and our communities are already suffering from the impacts. But you wouldn’t know that by looking at our political system.

Why not? Because the people in power aren’t feeling this crisis like the rest of us, especially those of us who are poor or people of color. Across the Midwest, communities are still struggling to recover from unprecedented floods, particularly Indigenous nations. In refinery and coal plant communities around the country, black and brown people can barely leave their homes without worrying about the air they breathe.

As the climate crisis continues to claim lives, and our future becomes more uncertain by the day, our elected officials keep catering to the fossil fuel billionaires who created this problem instead of protecting people and the planet. It’s no wonder young people around the world have been taking to the streets for more than a year. Now, the youth are calling on people of all ages to join in — and it’s up to all of us to heed the call to action.

On September 20th, millions of people of all ages around the world will walk out of their classes, jobs, and homes as part of a Global Climate Strike. Nearly 100 events are already being organized across the US. Join one near you now, or sign up to host one where you live.

We need just solutions to the climate crisis that don’t just address the symptoms. We know the root cause of this problem is a corporate-run economy built on systemic racism, wealth inequality, and all kinds of social injustice.

We know what is needed for science and justice, and we have the solutions already. If we band together, we have the collective power to make those solutions politically inevitable — all it takes is every one of us acting in unison to create change.

It’s past time to start implementing the bold solutions we need that prioritize communities already facing the climate crisis. RSVP now to a Climate Strikes event where you live — and if there isn’t one, sign up to host one yourself. Our organizers will support you every step of the way with the resources to help you plan it and make it a success.

One day of striking won’t solve everything, but it will show those in power that we refuse to stand by in the face of climate crisis. It will show the world who the real villains in this story are. And if we’re numerous and loud enough, it will be the spark that helps turn the tide. And that’s all we really need.

Onwards,

Tamara Toles O’Laughlin – North America Director for 350.org

Biden Nails It

Former Vice President and current presidential candidate Joe Biden simply nailed it Wednesday afternoon in a speech in Burlington.

The video is 26 minutes long.

Remember that this was given on the day that the current president was making perfunctory appearances in Dayton and El Paso after the tragic events in those cities.
