More than 65 elected officials, organizations, and businesses support the effort to make September Labor Union Appreciation Month at thankaunion.com

Des Moines, Iowa — Iowans are speaking out in support of recognizing September as Labor Union Appreciation Month. More than sixty elected officials, organizations, and businesses have signed on to the effort at ThankAUnion.com.

A proclamation recognizing September as Labor Union Appreciation Month will be requested from the office of Governor Kim Reynolds, as well as from cities and counties across the state. Supporters of Labor Union Appreciation Month will also attend events and share information about the important role labor unions have had and continue to have in Iowa and across the country.

“We know that public support for labor unions is strong, and that’s because workers everywhere want some dignity and respect on the job,” said Danny Homan, President of AFSCME Council 61. “At the end of the day, that’s what we’re here fighting for every day.”

“Labor unions have been an avenue to the middle class for millions of Americans for many years,” said Senator Amanda Ragan. “That is one of the reasons I believe they are important to our country.”

“I’m very thankful for the opportunities than union membership has provided three generations of my family and families all across Iowa. There has never been a time in our country’s history that more unions and more union jobs were more needed in our workforce. Unions are why we have a middle class in this country,” said Senator Claire Celsi.

“As an educator, every school district I’ve taught in (four states, four districts) has had a strong Union,” said Representative Art Staed. “The welfare of  students and teachers in their learning/working place was always the priority. Strong unions build safe, healthy, and equitable work environments.”

“Every month should be Labor Union Appreciation Month, just as every day is really Labor Day,” said Mike Owen, executive director of the nonpartisan Iowa Policy Project. “People work every day, and we all depend on that. We will only truly demonstrate our appreciation when we use public policy to make sure everyone is paid adequately, that they are paid what they are owed, they are protected on the job, that their families have health care, and that they have an opportunity for a secure retirement.”

“Labor unions are regularly the unsung heroes in our country,” said Matt Sinovic, executive director of Progress Iowa. “They fight for working families to have better pay and better lives, and every one of us benefits, because we all have higher wages, safer workplaces, and more quality of life as a result. If you like having paid sick leave, vacation days, or things as basic as child labor laws, you should thank a union. And if you want working families to have a seat at the table when it comes to determining the future of our state and country, you should support labor unions.”

Trumps Tariffs, Iowa Farmers And The Amazon Rain Forest Fires

Elections really do have consequences!

Do you think any of this would have happened had Hillary Clinton, the highest vote getter, become president?

Ohio farmer Christopher Gibbs discusses the effects of Trump trade policies on the Chris Hayes Show of Aug. 27th: (7 minutes)

A few minutes of simple cause and effect thinking easily leads people to understand what the real consequences of Donald Trump’s insane trade war on China may possibly end up being.

No doubt when The Chosen One (a name he picked for himself) instituted his trade war on China, he saw China quickly crumbling in a heap of humility begging for forgiveness from America. That is how it plays out in his fantasies. This is usually followed by crescendos of cheers from adoring audiences proclaiming The Chosen One the greatest ever.

Apparently no one in the administration or in his party in congress warned him that the Chinese were humans who could think and would possibly retaliate. Retaliate they did with a spear aimed right at America’s heartland. No doubt the administration assumed China could not survive without American farm products.

As many people do when they go to their regular store to buy groceries and find the prices have suddenly risen unexpectedly, the Chinese decided to shop around to see if they could get similar goods someplace else cheaper. So they went shopping for soybeans. Enter Brazil.

So Brazil has been growing and exporting soybeans for a long time. They may not have had enough beans for the Chinese at first, but by clearing some land and planting more and more acres of beans, they could eventually meet the demand.

“Clearing land” means burning down the Amazon rain forest. That is just what they did. From Huffpost:

As unsold U.S. soybeans are stored in silos across the farm belt, Brazilian farmers and corporations scramble to satisfy the voracious Chinese market. The push to break new ground amid President Donald Trump’s trade war with China is putting increasing pressure on the Amazon rainforest and is likely linked to the region’s devastating fires, according to experts.

“There is concern that market pressures related to the disruptions in global trade contributed to the fires in the Amazon,” a spokesman for the industry group the U.S. Soybean Export Council said in an email to HuffPost.

Brazil is America’s biggest soybean competitor and has stepped up its production now that China has slashed its purchases of U.S. crops in retaliation for Trump’s tariffs on Chinese imports. Soy shipments from Brazil jumped 27% from 2017 to 2018. Chinese imports from Brazil in the 12 months through April amounted to 71 million tons — nearly as much as China imported from the entire world in 2014, according to Bloomberg.

Amid increasing demands for farm products from China, Brazil’s far-right president, Jair Bolsonaro, has pledged to open up the 2 million-square-mile Amazon forest — including inside protected indigenous areas — to more farming and mining. He has jokingly referred to himself as “Captain Chainsaw.” Many suspect that raging fires in the region, which were largely unchecked for weeks, are part of a strategy to speed up that policy. The Amazon Environmental Research Institute has concluded that the recent increase in the number of fires in the Amazon is directly related to deliberate deforestation, the BBC reported.

So all the devastation and environmental concern that is being caused right now can be traced right back to The Chosen One. Don’t forget that the current and coming farm crisis that is almost sure to happen can be traced back to the same point.

No doubt The Chosen One thought that once his trade war ended all would go back to the way it was before with China buying humongous amounts of soybeans from which American farmers would make good profits. But much like the shopper who goes to anther store when her regular store raised prices, she won’t go back to her old store and China will buy he beans elsewhere.

We have spent nearly $30 billion to bail farmers out of a mess that Trump created all on his own and that his party has been backing. Trump has very probably made America into an unreliable trading partner in the eyes of other countries with the tariffs Trump has foisted on the world. For a party that screams “free trade” at the top of its lungs, they sure have a funny way of showing it.

Thus Trump and his party may well have damaged America’s trade for a long time to come.

Think very hard about this when you vote next year. Vote Trump in again and we will get many more policies conceived in ignorance and executed with only his ego in mind.

The Al Franken Comeback

They stuck a fork in him.  Can he rise from the dead?

Al Franken now has a website and a YouTube channel podcast.  He is scheduling public speaking engagements. Some are calling for him to run for office again, including Harry Reid who feels he got a bad deal when he was forced out of office by his own party.

The New Yorker did an investigative piece about sexual assault allegations against him, raising questions about the validity of the main accusation. Some of the accusers remain anonymous.

In announcing his resignation on Dec. 7,  Franken said that many of the allegations made against him in recent weeks were “simply not true.” Other instances, he said, he remembered “very differently.”

Seven senators who called for Franken to resign have come forward saying they regret acting so hastily against him, before hearing his side of the story. Al Franken said he regrets resigning his seat prior to a Senate Ethics Committee investigation (which he was calling for at the time).  Schumer threatened to strip him of his committees if he did not resign.

Democrats got sucker punched.  Coincidentally or not – I think not – the fact is, if it wasn’t for Senator Al Franken’s questioning of Jeff Sessions about Russia-gate, there would have been no Mueller investigation.

So we need you back, Al.  One way or another.

DCCC Targets IA-02 As Battleground District

Rep. Dave Loebsack has announced his retirement in 2020.  We have been very fortunate to have Democratic representation in Iowa’s 2nd district.  Now we need to make sure Dave’s seat stays in Democratic hands.

This from Roll Call:

Iowa’s 2nd District

“Democratic Rep. Dave Loebsack is not seeking an eighth term in 2020. He held on to this district in 2016, even as it swung to Trump, who carried it by 4 points. While Loebsack had no trouble winning reelection last fall, Republicans are making the 2nd a top target this cycle. Inside Elections rates the race a Toss-up.”

Help keep Iowa’s 2nd District blue.  If you can, please donate to Rita Hart’s campaign for congress in IA-2.

Here’s a message from the Hart campaign:

###

The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee (DCCC) just released its list of battleground districts, and guess who’s on it? Our campaign right here in Iowa’s 2nd District!

That means that our district is now a part of the Democratic offensive in 2020 to hold Washington Republicans accountable. We’re on the list because our district is winnable and we are building a strong campaign, but in order to see Rita sworn into office in 2020 we need your support.

Can you help us continue this momentum by giving $2 or $22 today? Everyone here is proud to be on that list, and we’re taking that excitement out with us as we continue campaigning across the district.

More notoriety means more outside money flowing to our opponents. The NRCC undoubtedly saw this new list too, and we know they’re planning to fight hard to win this district. We need your help now to help us keep hitting our goals and building this campaign so we’re at our best when they come after Rita.

There’s a lot of work left to do. Give $20.20 today so we can counter the NRCC’s plans and propel Rita straight to VICTORY!

Best,
Zachary Meunier

What Is A CAFO?

Jefferson County Farmers & Neighbors, Inc. – JFAN

This is the first of five videos in a JFAN interview series with Dr. John Ikerd about CAFOs, Iowa’s #1 problem.  Visit Dr. Ikerd’s website here:  johnikerd.com/

“The operation runs like a factory. You consolidate control. You simplify the production process where you can hire people to do the work rather than having individual decision makers. You simplify it so that you can concentrate management into larger and larger operations and now large corporations basically make all of the important decisions of those operations. That’s the reason they call it factory farms because it runs a lot like a factory and it looks like an industrial process. “

Visit the JFFAN YouTube page to view the entire series:

  • How CAFOs impact the environment
  • What are the biggest problems in factory farming?
  • The difference between factory farms and traditional independent farms
  • Are Animals Still Raised on Pasture?

JFAN is a nonprofit educational foundation composed of rural and town residents, and traditional family farmers. Our common concern is to stop the growth of infringing factory farms in Jefferson County and protect our quality of life.   jfaniowa.org

Inequality Media

Most folks remember Robert Reich as the diminutive Secretary of Labor in the Clinton administration. Reich did not curl up and blow away after his tenure with Clinton. He moved on to the University of California in Berkeley as the Chancellor’s Professor of Public Policy. He is also Senior Fellow at the Blum Center for Developing Economies.

If that were all he did there would be no reason to be writing about him now. However, Reich also runs a little group called Inequality Media. Reich and his group produce short, highly informative videos that focus on some aspect of public life in America today and usually offers solutions.

From the Inequality Media website on their vision and purpose:

VISION

Our ultimate vision is a United States where active participation by informed citizens restores the balance of power in our Democracy and creates an economy where gains are widely shared.

MISSION

To inform and engage the public about inequality and imbalance of power.

WHAT WE DO

We are a nonpartisan digital media company with a mission.  We produce compelling original video, share our content through social and traditional media to raise awareness about the issues, and partner with leading organizations to provide an avenue through which viewers can engage, mobilize, and take action.

Our videos are far from a dry college economics lecture—they contain entertaining and easy to understand graphics, photos, and animations.  We explain the underlying economics, give the facts, and tie the issue back to the imbalance of power and widening inequality in America.  Our formula takes moments in the news cycle and explains them in a way that ties in the larger story of a movement and desire for change.  We believe in the power of narrative, and in the power of an informed and engaged public to bring about social change that will create a more level economy and more stable democracy.

Video topics  have included universal basic income, the student debt crisis, free trade, the racial wealth gap, gerrymandering, infrastructure, corporate inversions, border adjustment tax, Medicare for all, and the role of the media in a democracy, among many others.

Inequality Media is a registered California 501(c)(3) nonprofit organized for educational purposes.   Our associated organization— Inequality Media Civic Action—is a registered California 501(c)(4) social welfare organization.

IMPACT

Inequality Media’s videos have been viewed over 440 million times. With nearly 4.5 million social media followers from every state in the U.S., we have an average weekly reach of over 14 million and an average weekly engagement of over 1 million.  Our engagement often rivals or bests people and organizations with double, triple, oven even quadruple our number of followers, including Bernie Sanders and Upworthy.  We have partnered with over 50 leading organizations to produce and distribute videos.  Our videos are distributed by MoveOn, Upworthy, Huffington Post, Salon, Newsweek, Alternet, Addicting Info, and Nation of Change, among others, and have been cited by our partners as instrumental to education, outreach, and engagement efforts.

HISTORY

Former U.S. Secretary of Labor Robert Reich and Emmy-award-winning filmmaker Jacob Kornbluth began their collaboration making short videos in 2009.  The two then collaborated to create the feature documentary Inequality for All, which was released in 2013 and won the U.S. Documentary Special Jury Award for Achievement in Filmmaking at the Sundance Film Festival.  Building off this momentum, Reich and Kornbluth founded Inequality Media in 2014 to continue the conversation about inequality with viewers.

Two realities motivate the work of Inequality Media:

1.     The defining story of our economic times is widening inequality. In recent years, widening inequality of income and wealth has gained unprecedented public awareness, yet studies show that most Americans do not comprehend the depth of the problem or its devastating impacts.  At this critical point, there is great need to give context to the economic moment and for the public to understand the bigger picture––how widening inequality undermines our economy and threatens our democracy, why this widening gap affects us all, and what we can do about it.

2.     The importance of storytelling to policy change has been largely overlooked. All too often organizations and policy makers rely on data and facts to make their case, forgetting about the critical importance of storytelling to connect to and persuade audiences.  This is especially true of economic policy, where policy leaders remain dumbfounded as to “why low-income Americans continue to vote against their economic interest.  We need to take a new tactic.  We need to engage both the head and the heart by telling stories that move and inspire, even as they inform and educate.  Corporate America and the conservative movement have long understood and utilized the power of good storytelling to gain supporters, it is time progressives took notice and took action.

The videos come out weekly. They are definitely worth the investment of a few minutes – usually 3 to 5 minutes – for a perspective of current issues from the perspective that illustrates the inequality in this country.

Today we have posted two of his most recent efforts.

Father takes his 7 year old daughter to work on ‘take your daughter to work day.’ Dad took her around and introduced her to his co-workers. As they went through this exercise, Dad could see her face get more and more sad. Finally the father asked his daughter if there was a problem. The daughter looked at him and said very loudly “Dad, where are all the clowns you said you worked with?”

Seems like she may need to head back to school for a bit more seasoning.

A Clear And Present Danger To The Republic

Image (1) Grassley-Trump-300x200.jpg for post 33850

Ran across this article about our current president on a website called The National Memo.

The writer, Joe Conason is the editor in chief of the National Memo. Conason has been around for quite a while and is well respected in progressive circles. In this article Conason considers whether the president’s actions are bizarre due to some innate problems or if there is actually a “method to his madness.”

The whole article is short and worth the time to click over and read it. Here are some excerpts:

“Whenever Donald Trump makes a remark that embarrasses our country before the world, conventional analysis suggests that this is yet another instance of his infantile narcissism. So we were told again when the president of the United States insulted Denmark, one of the founding nations of NATO and a dedicated American ally, by canceling his scheduled trip to meet with the Danish prime minister — supposedly because she had deemed his scheme to buy Greenland “absurd,” which of course it is.

<<snip>>

We consider Trump’s behavior bizarre because it is so incongruous with what we expect from an American president — whose sworn duty, after all, is to act in the national interest. But what if he is consciously acting against the national interest?  That disturbing question arises again and again, as it did during the Russia investigation, because almost everything Trump does can be viewed as inimical to the nation. The Danish incident is only the latest example in the long list that shows a certain method to his supposed “madness.”

In one way or another, Trump has denigrated or undermined American relationships with nearly all of our traditional allies, sometimes repeatedly. He has complained publicly about the French, the Germans, the British, the Australians, to name a few of the most important, and slammed the European Union as a trading and military partner. Indeed, he has strenuously sought to destroy the EU while befriending the so-called populist far right — the heirs of our fascist enemy. That approach to European affairs just happens to coincide perfectly with the political aims of the Russian Federation.

At home, Trump never stops promoting the same divisive themes that pollute our political system, courtesy of the Russian bots sent by his friend Vladimir Putin. For some reason, Trump won’t allow anyone to record his meetings with Putin as would normally be the case. Perhaps he doesn’t want anyone to hear the Russian dictator expressing appreciation for Trump’s long campaign to undermine the FBI counter-intelligence division, which exists to thwart Kremlin espionage.

But then Trump has sought to discredit and disorganize the entire intelligence apparatus of the United States, most recently with his attempted appointment of a lunatic Congressman from Texas as the director of national intelligence. Putin must also be quite grateful for Trump’s systematic effort to destroy American diplomatic capacity, by appointing non-entities to run the State Department while leaving half of its posts unfilled.”

Conason gives many more examples of the incongruous nature of the president’s actions. Putting such behaviors all together in one place really makes it look like a pattern and thus purposeful.

These are scary thoughts. We are now living in very scary times that seemed only possible in the world of bad fiction.

Conason leaves something very important out of his article. That is the often vociferous defense or the quiet acceptance of these bizarre actions by his party. The Republican Party has almost to a person willingly sold their souls to be seen as one with the president. What was once the Republican Party is now the Trumpublican Party.

In the past several months we have seen Party members openly and proudly do all they can to stop investigations into what many would consider treason by the president. This must not be forgotten when we go to the polls next year.

The one rotten member at the top is not the singular bad actor in that party. Nearly every elected official from the courthouse to the US Senate and House and state governors have been more than willing to stop any meaningful investigation of this president. This must be a part of every election campaign next fall.

One other question I heard brought up on a radio program last week in regard to actions by this president is whether or not he may be making statements that will cause the stock market bounce up and down like a yo-yo. Once again this is seemingly unthinkable. Yet we have no access to his financial records. Knowledge of anticipated big swings in the stock market can be extremely lucrative to those who know what to do with it. One statement on China and the stock market goes crazy, but someone with foreknowledge may be making a killing

So many things that were once in the realm of fiction are now sadly coming true.
