So Much Of This Still Applies

Harry Truman Stump Speech of 1948.

He gave the Republicans a much deserved hell:

As you read along, just be aware that this speech is still quite relevant. A change of a word here and there and Voila! A great democratic campaign speech:

“Today the forces of liberalism face a crisis. The people of the United States must make a choice between two ways of living — a decision which will affect us the rest of our lives and our children and our grandchildren after us.

On the other side, there is the Wall Street way of life and politics. Trust the leader! Let big business take care of prices and profits! Measure all things by money! That is the philosophy of the masters of the Republican Party.

Well, I have been studying the Republican Party for over 12 years at close hand in the Capital of the United States. And by this time, I have discovered where the Republicans stand on most of the major issues.

Since they won’t tell you themselves, I am going to tell you.

They approve of the American farmer — but they are willing to help him go broke.

They stand four-square for the American home — but not for housing.

They are strong for labor — but they are stronger for restricting labor’s rights.

They favor a minimum wage — the smaller the minimum the better.

They indorse educational opportunity for all — but they won’t spend money for teachers or for schools.

They think modern medical care and hospitals are fine — for people who can afford them.

They approve of Social Security benefits — so much so that they took them away from almost a million people.

They believe in international trade — so much so that they crippled our reciprocal trade program, and killed our International Wheat Agreement.

They favor the admission of displaced persons — but only within shameful racial and religious limitations.

They consider electric power a great blessing — but only when the private power companies get their rake-off.

They say TVA is wonderful — but we ought never to try it again.

They condemn “cruelly high prices” — but fight to the death every effort to bring them down.

They think the American standard of living is a fine thing — so long as it doesn’t spread to all the people.

And they admire the Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it.

Now, my friends, that is the Wall Street Republican way of life. But there is another way — there is another way — the Democratic way, the way of the Democratic Party.”

Eight years of W Bush left the country and the world on the precipice of financial collapse. Obama bailed us out, but a tainted election left Republicans in charge with the worst president ever wreaking havoc on policies and institutions. Now we stand at not just a financial precipice, but an environmental and climatological precipice as well.

Republicans have done what they could to bankrupt the country by giving huge tax breaks to the wealthy.

We are also on the precipice of a health care crisis. While we have crisis beating at the door, we also have maintenance that needs to be done and new infrastructures that need to be built. Only the Democratic Party will do this. We have seen the scandals that come when Republicans are in office and they set about profiting from their offices.

Loebsack’s Broadband Legislation Passes House Committee

Okay, maybe this isn’t a hot issue and it is complicated, but it is also really important and we commend Dave for his hard work and persistence in getting it passed.

Loebsack’s Legislation to Improve Broadband Availability Maps Passes House Committee

Bipartisan Broadband DATA Act now heads to the full House for consideration

Washington, D.C. – Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement after the House Energy and Commerce Committee passed his bipartisan legislation, H.R. 4229, the Broadband Deployment Accuracy and Technological Availability (DATA) Act. Loebsack’s legislation will help improve the accuracy of FCC broadband data maps by changing the way broadband data is collected. The legislation was cosponsored by Reps. Bob Latta (OH-05), Billy Long (MO-07) and Donald McEachin (VA-04) and now heads to the full House for its consideration.

CLICK HERE for video of Loebsack discussing his Broadband DATA Act.

“I am very pleased that the House Energy and Commerce Committee has passed the Broadband DATA Act by unanimous vote. This bill is important to actually fixing the problem and getting highspeed broadband to where it is needed, especially in rural areas. Without the best data available, we cannot properly invest in building out broadband access. I look forward to getting this legislation passed in the House and on its way to the Senate,” said Loebsack.

Specifically, the Broadband DATA Act:

  • Requires the FCC to collect granular service availability data from wired, fixed wireless, and satellite broadband providers
  • Requires strong parameters for service availability data collected from mobile broadband providers to ensure accuracy.
  • Asks the FCC to consider whether to collect verified coverage data from state, local, and tribal governments, as well as from other entities.
  • Creates a process for consumers, state, local, and Tribal governments, and other groups to challenge FCC maps with their own data, and requires the FCC to determine how to structure the process without making it overly burdensome on challengers.

A significant digital divide remains between urban and rural America. Congressman Loebsack is a leader in working to close this divide by promoting broadband deployment throughout rural America. Loebsack serves on the Communications and Technology subcommittee of the Energy and Commerce Committee, which has jurisdiction over telecommunications issues. He also serves as a co-chair of the Rural Broadband Caucus.

Trump Gets Crazy Policy Ideas From Sean Hannity, Fox News

Media Matters has this:

The House impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump, which enters a new phase with public hearings before the Intelligence Committee, is primarily a story about his corrupt abuses of power in seeking to coerce a foreign government to investigate his political opponents. But it also illustrates perhaps the greatest impact yet of the nexus between Fox News, the president, and federal policy.

Trump’s deep enmity for Ukraine reportedly dates back to fall 2017 and apparently baffled some White House aides who were confused about its source. But the likely explanation is quite simple: The president learned to hate Ukraine by watching Fox.

In summer 2017, the White House was threatened by reporting that during the 2016 presidential campaign, top Trump advisers, including the president’s son Donald Trump Jr. and son-in-law Jared Kushner, had colluded with Russians intent on supporting his election.

In an effort to push back on this reporting, Hannity used his Fox program to promote the bogus narrative that the “real collusion” during the 2016 election had been between Hillary Clinton and Ukraine. He obsessed over purported “Ukrainian election collusion” in a dozen monologues over the course of the summer of 2017, coverage that on at least one instance caught the eye of Trump, who regularly watches Hannity’s program and reportedly talks to him on the phone about it frequently.

Hannity’s coverage seems to have predisposed Trump to hate Ukraine, setting the stage for the abuses of power that followed.

The Daily Beast’s Matthew Gertz:

For more than a year, I’ve studied this Trump-Fox feedback loop, the president’s habit of live-tweeting his favorite shows on the right-wing cable news network. I’ve tracked several hundred of the president’s often hyper-aggressive tweets back to particular segments on Fox News and its sister network, Fox Business, that caught the president’s eye.   https://www.thedailybeast.com/how-fox-news-pushes-trump-to-make-every-bad-decision

Everyone has a theory about Trump’s hyper-aggressive early morning tweetstorms. Some think they are a deliberate ploy the president uses to distract the press from his administration’s potential weaknesses, or to frame the public debate to his liking. Others warn his rapid shifts from one topic to another indicate mental instability.

But my many hours following the president’s tweets for Media Matters for America, the progressive media watchdog organization, have convinced me the truth is often much simpler: The president is just live-tweeting Fox, particularly the network’s Trump-loving morning show, Fox & Friends.

It’s no secret, of course, that the president likes to tweet about what he sees on TV. Thanks to diligent reporting from the White House beat, we know Trump often watches several hours of cable news each day via the “Super TiVo” he had installed at the White House. And journalists at CNN, the Washington Post, New York magazine, among others, have compiled lists of Trump tweets they believe were inspired by Fox.

But here’s what is shocking: After comparing the president’s tweets with Fox’s coverage every day since October, I can tell you that the Fox-Trump feedback loop is happening far more often than you think. There is no strategy to Trump’s Twitter feed; he is not trying to distract the media. He is being distracted. He darts with quark-like speed from topic to topic in his tweets because that’s how cable news works.

Here’s what’s also shocking: A man with unparalleled access to the world’s most powerful information-gathering machine, with an intelligence budget estimated at $73 billion last year, prefers to rely on conservative cable news hosts to understand current events.  –  https://www.politico.com/magazine/story/2018/01/05/trump-media-feedback-loop-216248

Letters Democrats Write

Image (1) letters-to-the-editor-notebook.jpg for post 25097

Don Paulson of Muscatine regularly shares his thoughts with the world and then shares them with us. His letters are usually so good I ask his permission to post them on occasion on these pages. Here is his most recent:

Who couldn’t have seen that coming?  On Wednesday, October 30, Republican U.S. Senator Joni Ernst (and Iowa’s other Republican U.S. Senator Charles Grassley) voted to allow the insurance industry to sell “junk” insurance plans.

These plans would allow the insurance companies to deny coverage for pre-existing conditions- that’s around 1.3 million Iowans.

Republicans have tried to get rid of Obamacare more than 70 times.  (Newsweek, 7/29/17, Chris Riotta, “GOP Aims to Kill Obamacare Yet Again After Failing 70 Times”)

Joni Ernst has voted with Trump 91.9% of the time.  (538.com)

Iowans can do better.  We need to vote Joni Ernst out of office next November.

Thank you for your time.

Letters to the editor (LTTEs) will be yet another valuable tool in our tool box that we will use to change the direction of this state and this country. Letters written by local citizens and posted in local newspapers will often have a greater impact than highly produced commercial from big advertising companies.

So sharpen those minds and get those keyboards ready. Check with local papers for their specific rules and then put your thoughts in an email to let them know that Iowa has good, thoughtful, concerned Democrats that are willing to speak up.

Sunday Funday: “I Am Not A Crook” Edition

Forty-six years ago today America’s one and only president felt it necessary to go before TV cameras and declare he was not a crook.

I will agree with Nixon on one thing he said there: “The American people deserve to know if their president is a crook.” Nixon welcomed the examination. Be nice if the Chosen One would welcome and cooperate with his examination so we could find out if he is a crook. {wink……wink}

Nikki Haley said last week that she finds the current president to be mostly truthful. No, really she did. It was probably the Alabama hurricane threat that he saw and no one else did that convinced her.

To sum up last week: Ay yi yi yi yi!

  1. What organization dropped its lawsuit against San Francisco and will accept the city’s labeling of this organization as a “domestic terrorist organization.”?
  1. Looks like Governor Matt Bevin has decided to accept the vote from the recent election and no longer contest the outcome in what state?
  1. This past fiscal year the current administration detained a record number of children at the border. Was this record more or less than 10,000 children?
  1. What nation is suffering under dual catastrophes of bush fires and water shortages?
  1. According to the Southern Poverty Law Center, what senior White House advisor promoted white nationalism in emails to Breitbart prior to working at the White House?
  1. Johnny we hardly knew ye section. What Republican presidential candidate ended his run last week?
  1. A preliminary report classifies 622 Iowa waterways in what condition?
  1. Rep. Jim Jordan told the Intelligence Committee that the committee must hear from the person who started it all. In response Rep. Peter Welch suggested the committee call who as a witness?
  1. Former Bolivian president Evo Morales resigned and took asylum in what country last week?
  1. What major American politician settled a case with the state of New York for $2 million for persistent charity law violations about two weeks ago?
  1. Career White House budget official Mark Sandy said Thursday he would do what, thus breaking ranks with the WH officials?
  1. Next Thursday, November 21st, what will happen if congress does not come to a budget agreement?
  1. Perhaps one of the worst qualified people ever, Steven Menashi, was confirmed to a lifetime appointment to the federal bench. How did Iowa’s senators vote?
  1. November 19th, 1863 president Lincoln gave a short address that was thought to be very unimpressive at the dedication of what historic landmark?
  1. What long term Long Island New York congress member announced his retirement last week.
  1. What world famous city saw its city council chambers flood just after the council rejected measures to combat climate change?
  1. SCOTUS declined to hear a case concerning guns which cleared the way for relatives of Sandy Hook to sue what gun company?
  1. The Chosen One claimed Tuesday that what White House advisor had created 14 million jobs in the past 3 years?
  1. Hey, there is another Democratic presidential candidate this week. Can you name him or her?
  1. SCOTUS also heard oral arguments concerning the legality of changes that may signal the end to what program instituted by the Obama Administration?

Roger Stone rolls a perfect 7 Friday. Seven convictions on seven charges. How soon before The Chosen One pardons Stone? I say before Christmas.

The Foot Soldiers Of Democracy

Like many who live in Iowa who have had the audacity to have openly register with one of the political parties, we get lots of calls these days. This year in particular we are getting lots of calls because of the high competitiveness of this year’s campaign and the feeling among so many Americans that this year’s election will determine whether or not our country will remain a democracy.

Like so many people based structures in our society, campaign structures are built along a hierarchical structure much like an army. At the top is the candidate, the commander as it were who sets the vision and general goals. Directly below the candidate are the trusted advisors who are essentially the generals. These trusted advisors put together the staff and put actual numbers around the goals to be achieved. By what date do we want to have what percent on the polls, for instance. What kind of numbers do we need in a given congressional district on down to the precinct level.

Below the close advisors come what would be the mid-level officers – the colonels, majors, captains and lieutenants of the campaign. As we go further down the line the areas of focus become smaller and more specific. Having never been in a campaign structure myself, I do not know what titles these folks have.  My guess is there are titles like state leader, district leader, county leader etc.

Like most organizations at the very bottom we find the people who are actually the ones who have the most contact with the customer. In this case the customer is the party voter. The folks at the bottom of the campaign organizations, the foot soldiers of the march of democracy are the campaign staffers.

Over the years we have had the good fortune to have met many, many of these folks. Some have become, at least temporarily, friends.

These are mostly young folks who are very politically aware. Most are imbued with some sense that they can make a difference. They attach themselves to a candidate whose ideals and policies are in alignment with their own and sign on to lend a hand.

Most have traveled some distance to come to work in a small state that probably be colder than most have ever experienced. They will often be living with host families but will be spending little time there as their days of meeting with local leaders and voters keeps them out most days and nights.

The cars they drive are much as you remember the first cars that you had. In Iowa a good car is so necessary because outside of about ten counties or so, Iowa is quite rural. For many, Iowa is often a nearly alien place compared to where they grew up. So along with this being a job driven by passion, it will also be quite an experience in their life’s journey.

We have met campaign staffers from the east, the west, the south. Some are from cities like Chicago, New York City, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Others come from towns that have one stop sign and a convenience store. Most have had some college experience, some have done a military tour of duty.

What they all have in common is that they have taken time from their lives to participate in the continuing drama of making our democracy stronger. For that we wish to express my deepest appreciation.

These young men and women are the foot soldiers of democracy. Their job is democracy at the in-the-dirt of the grass roots level. They will be working 15 to 18 hours a day until caucus night to persuade, cajole and even beg one more vote that may be the one to put their candidate over the top. Through it all they know they are the face of the campaign to the voter.

We are very fortunate in Iowa to have the great drama of the election play out right in front of our eyes. We have also been fortunate to have the staffers coming in to our state to work for their candidate. So when you get a chance to talk to one of the staffers, thank them for what they do, maybe buy them a cup of coffee. They don’t get paid a lot and they are a long ways from home, often dealing with folks who can sometimes be a bit cantankerous.

Then come the morning of February 4th, they will be gone to one of the next stops on the campaign trail. Hopefully they will have good memories of Iowa and Iowans wither their campaign was win or lose.

While Your Attention Is Diverted ……

impeach trump

with the impeachment hearings our environment is taking another wallop from the EPA. As if that wasn’t bad enough a new report raises alarms about insect collapse.

The current administration is hard at work 24 hours a day 7 days a week to roll back any and every policy that OUR government has put in place to protect the environment and to try to keep life functioning on earth. The Republican Party has for decades opposed any environmental policy that has ever been proposed or enacted. Now with a person who has a grade school comprehension level as the head of our government, republicans are seeing their wildest dreams fulfilled while scientists and citizens shake over what may come.

Writing in the latest issue of Vanity Fair – in her story TRUMP HAS A TERRIFYING NEW PLAN TO POISON THE AIR, WATER, HUMANS – Bess Levin writes that the EPA is about to undo decades of scientific study:

At present the government formulates public health regulations, like those concerning clean air and water, based on scientific studies showing links between pollution and disease. For instance, we have rules surrounding mercury because studies conclusively proved that mercury from power plants negatively affects brain development, and rules concerning lead because of the data showing that lead in paint or dust can lead to behavioral disorders in children. The Trump administration, though, doesn’t like science or regulations, because they‘re impediments to Donald Trump’s industry cronies making as much money as possible, human health be damned. And now, his Environmental Protection Agency has found a nifty way to get rid of both in a move that is uniquely evil, even for this uniquely evil administration.

Per the New York Times, the EPA has drafted a proposal called “Strengthening Transparency in Regulatory Science,” which sounds well and good, but, of course, does the exact opposite of what the title suggests. According to the proposal, in order for an academic study’s conclusions to be considered, scientists would be required to disclose all of their raw data, including confidential medical records. Naturally, rather than lead to more “transparency,” the requirement would significantly limit medical and scientific research, which is, of course, the point. That would then make it extremely difficult to create new rules because tons of studies demonstrating links between pollution and disease are based on health information obtained under confidentiality agreements. And here’s the kicker: Not only would the proposal affect regulations moving forward, but it could retroactively apply to old ones too:

Public health experts warned that studies that have been used for decades…might be inadmissible when existing regulations come up for renewal. For instance, a groundbreaking 1993 Harvard University project that definitively linked polluted air to premature deaths, currently the foundation of the nation’s air-quality laws, could become inadmissible. When gathering data for their research, known as the Six Cities study, scientists signed confidentiality agreements to track the private medical and occupational histories of more than 22,000 people in six cities. They combined that personal data with home air-quality data to study the link between chronic exposure to air pollution and mortality.

“This means the EPA can justify rolling back rules or failing to update rules based on the best information to protect public health and the environment, which means more dirty air and more premature deaths,” Paul Billings, senior vice president for advocacy at the American Lung Association, told the Times. Michael Halpern, deputy director for the Center for Science and Democracy at the Union of Concerned Scientists, was even more blunt in his assessment: “It was hard to imagine that they could have made this worse, but they did,” he said. “This is a wholesale politicization of the process.” The Medical Library Association and the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries said the proposal “contradicts our core values,” while the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners said in a statement that it was “deeply concerned” that the rule would ultimately result “in weaker environmental and health protections and greater risks to children’s health.” But screw the kids, right? And their meddlesome adult minders too!”

Much more at the link.

The mind simply boggles at the damage will be done to our environment that is unfettered by scientifically grounded rules. Remember the Love Canal and the the Cuyahoga River catching on fire? I guess the Republican Party sees those as the good old days. Cancers, lung disease, unbreathable air and undrinkable water!

As scary as that is, a new report out of Sussex University in England authored by Professor Dave Goulson discusses the true impact of the insect apocalypse with a call for urgent action:

“Commissioned by a group of Wildlife Trusts in the south west, Professor Dave Goulson’s report reveals the lasting effects of declines on insect eating birds, bats, and fish, and the cost to society in terms of the millions in lost revenue and broken ecosystems.

Professor of Biology, Dave Goulson said: “Insects make up the bulk of known species on earth and are integral to the functioning of terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems, performing vital roles such as pollination, seed dispersal and nutrient cycling.

“They are also food for numerous larger animals, including birds, bats, fish, amphibians and lizards. If we don’t stop the decline of our insects there will be profound consequences for all life on earth.

“It’s not just our wild bees and pollinators that are declining – these trends are mirrored across a great many of other invertebrate species. Of serious concern is the little we know about the fate of many of the more obscure invertebrates that are also crucial to healthy ecosystems.”

However, Professor Goulson does have at least a note of hope:

“With a coordinated and concerted action from government, local authorities, food growers and the public, the Wildlife Trusts believe that insect populations can recover and thrive once more.”

But just so you don’t get too hopeful that we can turn that potential catastrophe around, think of who is in charge of our government and that right wing candidates have been changing the face of Europe lately.

Writing on Alternet  the illustrious David Cay Johnston pens an eye-opening piece about the forthcoming book “A Warning” by Anonymous that is coming out Tuesday. Among many of the observations about the current president in this book, Johnston cites this assessment:

“The sheer level of intellectual laziness is astounding,” Anonymous writes in telling how Trump acts on whatever pops into his head, convinced that he is all-knowing.

“Behind closed doors, his own top officials deride him as an ‘idiot,’ and a ‘moron’ with the understanding of a ‘fifth- or sixth-grader.’”

Rex Tillerson, the former ExxonMobil CEO who as Secretary of State tried to stop many illegal actions by Trump, was reported to have called Trump “a fucking moron,” an anecdote implied but not specified in the book.”

It is this simple. If we want to survive, Trump must be rejected next election. It is life and death. For all life.
