Iowa Is The New Kansas And Other Post-Trump Thoughts

See “The Brainwashing of my Dad”

Give Democrats some love!

Joe Biden won the election. He beat Trump by well over five million votes. Biden will be inaugurated January 20 and Trump will be a one-term president. This is absolutely a huge Win for us all and we have reason to celebrate. I’m not sure the enormity of this colossal save has sunk in yet. We have plenty of work to do to save our Democracy, but this was the first thing that needed to happen.  We should savor this win and realize that Democrats did something right and we didn’t blow it.  So let’s give Democrats some love.  We did good.

Iowa is in trouble

Iowa is a different story. Iowa Republicans are in too far to disengage from Trump and accordingly, cannot acknowledge that he lost.  The state party is signing on with Trump in his election-stealing efforts.  There is no way they can win but it works to undermine the incoming Biden administration and cause the not too whippy GOP flock to think the election was illegitimate (even though the GOP re-elections are of course legitimate).

Count all the votes

Republicans have come up with a new phrase that they hope will be around for future election-undermining efforts when they don’t win – “legal votes.”  Here’s how it works. Using the word “legal” before the word “votes” suggests that there are in fact “illegal” votes. Republicans repeat this phrase in their public comments which the media are obliged to report.  The media disseminate the new phrase and just like that the idea that there are equal parts “legal” and “illegal” votes in any given election will seep into the subconscious of every American whether you know it’s a ruse or you don’t. It’s already happening.

Republicans like Joni Ernst can say, as she did, “count the legal votes!” (votes for Trump) and “don’t count the illegal votes!” (votes for Biden).

The crazy continues as this puts Democrats in the position of having to point out that you have to count all of the votes before you determine if there are any “illegal” votes.  This allows Republicans to use their vast right wing propaganda machine Fox, talk radio, and conservative internet sites to accuse Democrats of wanting to count “illegal” votes.  And that is how it’s done. It’s a simple formula of subtle lying that Republicans consistently use because it consistently works.

Remember when we just said “count all the votes?”  Republicans with the help of the media will render this phrase obsolete, politically incorrect and unpatriotic.

It’s the media, stupid

Iowa has a vast right-wing propaganda machine of our own to help with this, boasting fourteen commercial radio stations evenly distributed around the state reaching every community, each station broadcasting 6 – 15 hours daily of right-wing talk.  Click on the link to find your local station and give them a call.  Tell them to switch their programming to sports or country music or something slightly less harmful. That is, if you can find a phone number for your local station that is not I-Heart Radio corporate HQ.

I would like to take this opportunity to point out that what they are doing with the “legal” vote phrase is a very  subtle form of brainwashing.  If brainwashing is too strong of a word for you, I’m sorry but that’s what it is.  See my post, blogforiowa.com/2017/08/21/movie-review-the-brainwashing-of-my-dad/   Be sure to watch the excellent documentary by Jen Senko about how Republicans, threatened by liberal activism in the 60’s, purposefully developed their own media in order to influence elections and save the free enterprise system.

Iowa the new Kansas

Post-election, Iowa is in even deeper doo-doo than we already were, Republicans having made gains in the legislature and holding their power trifecta.  If you thought they felt free to run amok before this election I have a feeling we are in for a right-wing policy onslaught of epic proportions.  The horrific ideas they have been imposing on our state during their power trifecta are bound to get unimaginably worse. Sadly, Iowa is the new Kansas, but that has been true for some time. Now it is undeniable.

A post-election poll by Public Policy Polling shows that a majority of Iowans support progressive policies but the question we need to answer is why are they not voting for candidates who would support those policies?  Why are they voting for these god-awful Republicans? National and Iowa Democrats need to take a look at how to counter the propaganda machine.  It’s just getting to be too much to overcome.  You can find the PPP results on the Progress Iowa website.

Expect Republicans to do their worst in the coming sessions between now and the next election with a full endorsement from voters who seem to have lost their minds.

Iowa GOP’s set-up to their upcoming really bad movie

Iowa GOP’s State Central Committee have already passed two resolutions to support Donald Trump. The first resolution says the Iowa GOP supports, without reservation, President Trump’s efforts to obtain a full and fair count of “legal” votes.

Resolution #1:

WHEREAS, The integrity of the election process is a crucial component of representative democracy; and

WHEREAS, Election integrity requires every legal vote to be accurately counted; and

WHEREAS, Irregularities and errors in the 2020 election process appear to have occurred in a number of states, placing the outcome of the election in doubt; and

WHEREAS, True election results can only come from official sources, not reporters or television networks; and

WHEREAS, It is essential to follow constitutional processes to ensure the integrity of our electoral process, including allowing courts to adjudicate election disputes, but not to rewrite state election laws that govern federal elections; and

WHEREAS, Candidates in disputed elections have a right and obligation to seek relief from courts; therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That the Republican Party of Iowa supports without reservation President Trump’s efforts to obtain a full and fair count of legal votes, including appeals to the Supreme Court of the United States if necessary.

The State Central Committee also passed a second resolution that spoke more to Trump’s accomplishments as President.

Resolution #2:

WHEREAS, President Trump’s leadership has resulted in greater protection of the unborn, protection of religious liberty, a strong economy before the pandemic and a rapid recovery afterward, border protection, support of law enforcement, respect for our Constitution, America-first foreign and trade policies, energy independence, and Middle East peace; and
WHEREAS, President Trump’s leadership has also resulted in an acceleration of vaccine development, normally slowed by excessive regulation, which holds promise to help end the COVID-19 pandemic that originated in China and spread around the world; therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the Republican Party of Iowa enthusiastically and unconditionally supports President Donald J. Trump.

Both resolutions were passed unanimously.

You Are Involved In Georgia’s Results. Donate

from the Ossoff for US senate website

That trip you were planning on taking over one of the holidays that you no longer can? Now you have a bit of extra money. Want to do a really good deed for the country and yourself with at least a part of that? I have a suggestion.

President Biden will be facing challenges as no president ever has. The virus will be in full transmission as he takes the oath of office. Besides plans and great people, Biden will need both houses of congress so the administration can get legislation passed that will give Biden the tools and finances to meet the challenges.

Right now the leadership of the senate appears to be in the hands of Republicans. But that can be changed! If the numbers in the senate stay the way they are, Republicans will be the leadership. If that is true, then Mitch McConnell will be the senate leader. For those few who have been hiding for many years, McConnell lives to ruin Democratic administrations. If he continues as leader he will do anything and everything to ruin the Biden presidency, just as he did to the Obama presidency.

But you and I and good Americans throughout the land can at least play a part in keeping that from happening. As of right now, Republicans lead in the Senate is 50 to 48 with two seats yet to be decided. Those two seats will be revoted on because no candidate in either race got over 50% of the votes.

So Georgia will have 2 runoff elections for the two seats. Each race will have only 2 candidates so that one candidate in each race will get over 50% to win.

This is where you and I and Democrats across the country can lend a hand. As we learned during the recent election, money is the oil that greases sections. For our candidates to run effectively, they will need donations and lot of them. Beside the campaigns for the candidates themselves there is also a group headed up by Stacey Abrams that will driving out the vote in Georgia.

If you haven’t seen what we need to stop Mitch McConnell from continuing as Senate Leader, Democrats will need to win both seats in the runoff. The date of the election itself is January 5th.

That is just one of the important dates in the runoff schedule. The cut off dates for registration for new voters is December 7th. Early voting begins on December 14th. Stacey Abrams group will be deeply involved in registration and early voting.

So the places to go to help save the country with a donation or to volunteer for phone calling:

https://fairfight.com/     This is the Stacey Abrams group.

https://electjon.com/     This is Jon Ossoff’s website. The donate button will find you (just kidding)

https://warnockforgeorgia.com/      This is Raphael Warnock’s website.

You all know what to do. This is for the country, for you, your children and grandchildren! Go get ‘em!

Sunday Funday: Voter Fraud Edition

thanks to democraticunderground.com

With the new television season widely disrupted by the corona virus, TV networks are digging deep for new content put on the small screens. One that sounds intriguing is a mystery show that has sprung from the after effects of the recent US election. The mystery is that wild popular president Donald J. Trump was not re-elected. The votes have either been stolen or the voters hijacked!

Bringing decades of experience in being mysteries themselves, the famously hunted but never found trio of Nessy, Big Foot and UFO will employ their knowledge of ‘can’ be found’ to ferret out those missing voters and ballots. Engrossing with sidelights of hilarity, such as the press conference at the Four Seasons Total Landscaping in Philadelphia instead of the Four Seasons Hotel in Philly.

This series will have it all as Trump and his trio of investigators go where few have gone before! Coming soon on Fox!

Biden Is On The Horizon!

Photo by Adam Schultz / Biden for President

After writing the previous post I needed to remind myself that no matter how dark it is today, better days are on the horizon. Certainly as we look into the future from the dark of today, we see the bright skies of a new Democratic administration just a couple of months in the future. The new administration is already very hard at work putting together a leadership team and a cabinet that will take on the severe problems they will be left with on day one.

As you know and as we continue to see, the current administration has shown that they will do nearly anything to wreck the new administration. This is not a secret. The Biden Administration knows it and may have to come up with work arounds. We can hope that the few angels of good in the Republican Party will step in and put country before party. I wouldn’t hold my breath, though.

Still the law is the law and nothing ( I do not think) can stop Joe Biden from being sworn in as the 46th President of the United States at noon ET on January 20th. That will of course be a few minutes after the daughter of immigrants has been sworn in as the first female Vice-President in our history!

The challenges these two will be facing will be daunting, nearly unrivaled in our history. Taking on and defeating the corona virus is task one. Until the virus is subdued it will be nearly impossible to get the economy rolling again. President Biden and Vice-President Harris will be laser focused. They will step into office with plans to attack these problems.

While it is still 65 days or so away, hope will keep us going. Even though Donald Trump has taken away summer vacation, regular school, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas things will get better. Things will get better quickly.

The President and Vice-President will need our full support and co-operation. We know there will be pockets of resistance. Why anyone would want to keep the virus in control is beyond me, but they will.

Beyond the full out attack on the virus one of the other encouraging changes will be the acceptance of all Americans from the White House. No longer will we see the President or Vice-president dividing the country. This aspect by itself will brighten the scene.

In order for all this to happen as we hope, the new Administration will need a House and a Senate that will be co-operative to get the legislation and funding for programs to take on the nation’s problems. A bit more on that tomorrow.

Is This Reality? No, It’s Iowa

Iowa Avoids Reality Where Protecting People From Pandemics Is Considered Bad Policy

I am so old that I remember governors back to Herschel Lovelace. Now I am not saying that I remember all of their policies nor their political nuances. What I do seem to remember is that when we had a crisis of the day most would actually do something, not just tuck their tail between their legs and go hide. I can’t imagine a one of them that would not have taken the virus on mano-a-mano.

But not our current governor. Reynolds acts as if she does something to disturb the corona virus on its path to infect the whole of Iowa she will be somehow punished. So she mostly says “Hey, good luck out there, Iowa! Try not to get sick. But it is not my job to do anything to help you.” Imagine perhaps the most memorable of Iowa’s latter 20th century governors, Bob Ray, surrendering like that. I can’t.

Bob Ray would get department heads together and put together plans. He would face up to the virus around the state. Bob Ray would have led by putting on a mask.

For that matter, I believe the first Terry Branstad would have done the same. Chet Culver was a governor who seemed to relish leading by doing. He was also demanding, sometimes to the point of making himself look bad. But he was leading.

What about Harold Hughes? My recollection was that he would pursue what he believed was right with religious fervor. He was dynamic and seemingly larger than life.

What we see in Kim Reynolds is someone who is more than happy to downplay the seriousness of A PANDEMIC in order not to upset her business supporters. There was little secret that Reynolds clearly saw the major stakeholders in Iowa as the business community and no one else. That is why her decisions have been pretty much what the business community wanted – keeping meat packers going while keeping their incidence rates secret, opening bars and restaurants despite data that it was the wrong thing to do.

Thanks to Reynolds approach she has turned Iowa into one of the most dangerous spots in the world. Right up there with the Dakotas as a great place to get the corona virus. We are now clocking in at around 5,000 new cases a day! 5,000! Our positivity rate is, I believe, over 30%, well beyond the 5% that ids recommended as the rate at which to start shutting the state down. We are keeping schools open beyond even Reynolds extremely high positivity guidelines.

So let’s do a little math. Iowa is nearing 200,000 cases. Now that may seem small in comparison to our 3,000,000 of population. That leaves 2,800,000 left to infect in the state.

But if we are adding 5,000 to that infected chunk, it will dwindle fast. At 5,000 per day by New Year’s Day we will have (170,000 + (5,000/day X  46 days) ) = 400,000 cases. That would leave 2,600,000 uninfected. If we keep up at 5,000/day for the next year on New Year’s Day of 2022 Iowa will have (400,000 + (5,000 uses/day X 365 days)) = 2,225,000 or about 75% of Iowans. Another 5 to 6 months and statistically all Iowans will have been infected. Or maybe at some point Iowa will reach that somewhat mythical “herd immunity.”

Think about this. While we heard from Pfizer that they have a sure fire vaccine, we have not heard that from any 3rd party independent agency such as the CDC or the FDA. While many are staking the future on this vaccine, there are many very big challenges to approving this vaccine, distributing and administering such a vaccine. Remember the Pfizer vaccine requires special handling in super cold storage.

So it is possible that with the total lack of any planning on Reynolds part which has led to the incredibly high rates that Iowa is suffering through, coupled with the lack of planning from the Trump administration and the enormous challenge of approving, manufacturing and distributing the Pfizer vaccine or any vaccine for that matter, Iowa is still looking at a long haul while the virus will still be transmitting almost unrestricted.

Hope is wonderful, but it must be tempered with a dose of reality. Kim Reynolds stint as governor has been a trip in a fantasy world. She has literally put Iowans lives at risk as she continues to refuse to make Iowans do what is needed to do to make life safer in this state.

Iowa does not have recall for elected officials. They should. When a public official screws up this badly, there should be some consequence, but there isn’t.

Maybe I am wrong. I hope I am badly wrong. Many of us have been warning that Reynolds cavalier attitude toward corona virus safety would lead us to where we are now. And it has. Yet she acts as if it is just another day, that the deaths and illnesses are just so much clutter in her life.

Poll: Iowa Voters Support Progressive Policies

Next poll should attempt to find out if Iowa voters prefer progressive policies, why are they voting for Republicans?

Here’s a statement by Progress Iowa.

IOWA EXIT POLL: Iowa Voters Support Progressive Policies

Des Moines, Iowa – Today, Progress Iowa released an exit poll in a briefing sharing Iowans’ top priorities at the ballot box. The poll, conducted by Public Policy Polling, shows that Iowa voters want more to be done to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, and that they support policies such as a dramatic increase in funding for education and increasing the minimum wage.

“The poll results show that a majority of Iowans believe that we have a responsibility to one another as a community,” said Matt Sinovic, executive director of Progress Iowa. “Iowans would wear a mask to stop the spread of COVID-19 if called upon to do so in a mandate from the Governor. We would give up our own tax cut to put that money toward public schools, infrastructure, and clean water. Iowans support a dramatic increase in public school funding and a return to requiring the state to negotiate with public employees about workplace safety. This poll shows what Iowans believe – that we are all in this together. I hope all of our elected officials will learn from this research and follow the will of their constituents.”

Key findings from the poll of Iowa voters include:

  • 74% would follow a statewide mandate to wear a mask in public places to prevent the spread of COVID

  • 58% want the Iowa Legislature to reinstate the requirement that local and state governments negotiate with public employees regarding their workplace safety and benefits

  • 78% agree that the minimum wage in Iowa should be increased from $7.25 per hour

  • 51% think Governor Kim Reynolds has not done enough on COVID restrictions

  • 48% disapprove of Governor Kim Reynolds’ job performance, and 43% approve

With the public support for increasing COVID-19 restrictions, Progress Iowa has released a new petition urging Gov. Kim Reynolds to institute a statewide mask mandate. While Reynolds has stated that a statewide mandate wouldn’t be enforceable, the poll results show that a majority of Iowans would follow one.

The poll, conducted by Public Policy Polling, surveyed 613 Iowa voters from November 2-3 with a margin of error of +/- 4 pct. points. The results are available here and the slides from the briefing are available here.

Progress Iowa is a multi-issue progressive advocacy organization with a network of more than 75,000 progressives. Year-round, Progress Iowa advocates for a stronger middle class, first-class public education, and fairness for all Iowans under the law.

Rita Hart For Iowa Files For Recount In IA-02 Race

From Hart campaign:  Rita Hart for Iowa Files for Recount in IA-02 Race

WHEATLAND, IOWA — Rita Hart for Iowa announced today that the campaign will be filing for a complete recount in all twenty-four counties in the district, citing numerous counting and tabulation irregularities over the last week. By end of the day Friday, November 13, 2020, the campaign will deliver written filings to all twenty-four county auditors in person outlining the request for a recount.

“With so much at stake in this election and such a slim margin separating the candidates, Iowans deserve to know categorically that their ballots have been accurately counted. Over the last several days, multiple consequential errors have materialized in this race that have serious implications for the district’s future representation. Given the errors found in Jasper and Lucas counties at the eleventh hour, we are moving forward today with requests for a complete recount of each precinct in the Second Congressional District to make sure all results have been reported accurately. Anything less will perpetuate doubt around this election,” said Campaign Manager Zach Meunier.

On Friday, Secretary of State Paul Pate announced a significant over-reporting error in Jasper County, triggering a county-wide recount. Earlier this week, Pate announced yet another reporting error, this time involving under-reported votes in Lucas County. The Associated Press announced earlier this week that it will not call the race until results are officially certified by the Secretary of State. Iowa law generally requires a party seeking a recount to post a bond, but because the currently understood margin in this race is so narrow, Rita Hart for Iowa will not need to post a bond.

While the importance of this recount cannot be overstated, given the pandemic’s spread in Iowa, Rita Hart for Iowa is fully committed to taking all necessary steps to protect the health and well-being of attendees. In her recount filings, Senator Rita Hart will urge county auditors to incorporate social distancing and require personal protective equipment (PPE) for all those who are participating in and observing the recount.

McConnell Before He Was “Moscow Mitch”

This happened four years ago after Trump was elected and then Vice-President Biden was leaving as president of the senate.  McConnell, before he came to be known as “Moscow Mitch” during the Trump era, gives a glimpse of himself as a human being. Perhaps this is why Joe Biden thinks he can get things done.

Will Mitch continue to help Trump lie about the election of someone he said he was honored to serve with?  Or is there hope that something good can be accomplished during Biden’s term?

Rita Hart Campaign Releases Statement on IA-02 Race

Rita Hart Campaign Releases Statement on IA-02 Race

WHEATLAND, IOWA — Today, Rita Hart for Congress Campaign Manager Zach Meunier released the following statement after remarks by Marianette Miller-Meeks:

“As we have said repeatedly, it is critical that Iowans’ voices are heard and the votes are accurately counted. The vote totals in this race continue to fluctuate, and both Iowa officials and independent news organizations have made it clear that the race is too close to call. Iowa is a state that values election integrity and Mariannette Miller-Meeks’ campaign’s attempts to usurp this process undermines that integrity. We appreciate the hard work of our poll workers and election officials to accurately count all legal ballots and the votes, and are confident by the end of this process that Rita Hart will be the next congresswoman from Iowa’s Second District.”
