Do Iowa Laws Exist Solely To Rubber Stamp Livestock Industry Interests?

Action alert from Iowa Environmental Council:

At IEC, it is our job to be watchdogs at the legislature, with local governments, and rule-making agencies, monitoring whether their decisions make Iowa a better place to live, work, and explore.

In 2021, that role has proven to be more important than ever.

Recently, Iowa DNR approved a permit for Supreme Beef to build a huge concentrated animal feeding operation (CAFO) right along one of our most sensitive trout streams, Bloody Run Creek, designated as an “Outstanding Iowa Water” for its high water quality.

This fight is far from over. As we evaluate next steps, we need your support and partnership to keep holding our government accountable, especially the agency whose mission is ‘to conserve and enhance our natural resources’, and making sure the interests of Iowans and our environment are at the forefront of decision-makers’ minds.

Become a member of IEC today, and continue making your voice heard.

“If IDNR can approve this facility, which is located in sensitive karst topography, in the watershed of an ‘outstanding Iowa water’ and important cold water trout streams, then current Iowa laws and regulations provide no protection of the public interest and exist solely to rubber stamp livestock industry interests.” – Ingrid Gronstal, IEC Water Program Director

As our staff attorney Michael Schmidt said about this decision, “State laws and the DNR both prioritize new CAFOs over protecting our streams, rivers, and lakes.” Join IEC in pushing back at the statehouse and with a membership gift today.

Raising our voices with yours,

The Team at IEC

Is Kim Reynolds The Worst Governor Ever?

Image (1) progress-iowa.jpg for post 17381

Check out the What A Week podcast by Potluck Media, a project of Progress Iowa.

This week, problematic Gov. Reynolds proved once again that she cares more for political games than saving lives.

Click here to listen to this week’s episode of What A Week produced by Progress Iowa and part of the Potluck Media Network.

Gov. Reynolds put politics before saving lives this week after stating that migrant children are “not our problem.” By denying to help these children, and blaming Biden for this, Reynolds proved she needs to get her priorities straight.

Reynolds gave $96,000 in bonuses to two employees running Iowa agencies this week, despite the fact that they already receive maximum state salaries. One individual was the coordinator for several no-bid contracts, which many viewed as problematic.

Gov. Reynolds proved she does not know best as over 850 Iowa City students are in quarantine, with more than 140 testing positive for COVID. In January, Reynolds pushed schools to open 100% and even stated that COVID-19 is not spreading in the classroom.

The right to choose is under attack as the anti-abortion amendment went through the Senate again with added language, stating it would protect mothers from expanding abortion efforts. This is shocking, as we know that outlawing abortion doesn’t stop abortion, it only stops safe abortion, causing pregnant women harm.

Iowans protested several bills at the Capitol this week, including legislation increasing qualified immunity for police and giving protesters increased penalties. While legally protesting, one activist was arrested for assaulting a police officer; however, in the video an assault doesn’t seem to take place. Furthermore, these protesters were allowed to be in the Capitol and went through security as well.

Union leader Danny Homan and Democratic leaders stood up for workers at the Capitol this week following the murders of two correctional employees. Homan, AFSCME Council 61 president, urged Gov. Reynolds and Republican leaders to ensure correctional facilities are fully staffed and to give bargaining powers back to employees.

Stay tuned for more next week, and if you haven’t already, be sure to subscribe to the What A Week podcast on Apple podcasts, Spotify, Google Play, or wherever you listen.

March 2, 2020

“You take a solid flu vaccine, you don’t think that could have an impact, or much of an impact, on corona?” [Trump to health officials who answered “No.”]

“A lot of things are happening, a lot of very exciting things are happening and they’re happening very rapidly.”

March 27, 2020

“I love Michigan, one of the reasons we are doing such a GREAT job for them during this horrible Pandemic. Yet your Governor, Gretchen “Half” Whitmer is way in over her head, she doesn’t have a clue. Likes blaming everyone for her own ineptitude!”

I just don’t. Maybe I’ll change my mind.”

Sunday Funday: A New Spring Edition

Side note: It looks like newly anointed 2nd district Iowa Congress Member Mariannette Miller-Meeks is more than ready to join her republican colleagues in the distraction game. Her work for our district will be minimal. Her work in dividing the country will be her focus.

Do you remember what it was like a year ago this week? Specifically I do not. Generally about all I can remember is spending most days worrying about someone or something related to the corona virus. Would I bring it back into the house and infect my disabled wife? What about our kids, nieces, nephews and friends?

Our national leaders were doing all they could to make things worse. Iowa’s leadership seemed to only care about how much meat was processed, and cared not at all what the cost was in human life. Around April 24th our insane president suggested that people drink bleach to combat their corona virus.

So there we were a year ago, with the country in desperate straits and mostly idiots in leadership roles. I would love to think Americans learned something from what happened, but the election indicated only some learned the major lesson of the pandemic. Leadership roles are not places for idiots. Biden is such  great change!

The lesson learned by Republicans was that despite how much they were already cheating, it wasn’t nearly enough.

  1. The vote on unionizing the Amazon warehouse in Bessemer, Alabama is in. Did the union win or lose?
  1. April 9, 1865. Appomattox Court House, Virginia. What major historical event took place?
  1. Florida representative Matt Gaetz is suddenly a household name. What did Gaetz do to become so suddenly well known?
  1. Continuing her record of slowing any progress on recovery from the corona virus, Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds came out against what post virus aid to tell who has been vaccinated?
  1. Continuing a truly activist presidency, President Biden issued an executive order concerning what major wedge issue Wednesday?
  1. It is as if cable news was made for things like this. In Minneapolis, the murder trial of what former police officer gets nearly wall to wall coverage?
  1. Republican Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell told what group to ‘stay out of politics, but keep sending us your money’ last week?
  1. The once vaunted NRA is in court in Texas after filing for what?
  1. Jennifer Weisselberg, former daughter-in-law of what major Trump insider, was seen unloading boxes of documents and a laptop at the Manhattan DA’s office last week?
  1. Another odd fallout of the pandemic is the lack of what condiment packets at restaurants?
  1. April 12, 1945. The eyes of America look to Warm Springs, Georgia as news that who had died races across the country?
  1. The Major League All-Star game was moved to what venue in response to Georgia’s voter suppression laws?
  1. A couple of great NCAA basketball finals. What team held on to win the women’s title in San Antonio?
  1. In Indianapolis, what team was denied the chance as an unbeaten champion as they were beaten soundly by Baylor?
  1. What political group was responsible for 3% of all credit card complaints in 2020 when they continued o charge donors far beyond what the donors thought they had donated?
  1. Fashion critics tongues were all ablaze last week as First Lady Jill Biden was spotted wearing what?
  1. The Ingenuity helicopter is scheduled to take its first flight today or early tomorrow. Where will Ingenuity be be flying?
  1. President announced that coronavirus vaccines will be available for all Americans over 16 on what date?
  1. What Democratic senator threw a bit o a wrench into Biden’s infrastructure plan when the senator said he would oppose a 28% corporate tax?
  1. Speaking of the infrastructure plan, the Senate Parliamentarian gave approval for Democrats to use what instructions to move the bill through the Senate?

Since Reagan starting in 1982, the three wealthiest families (Waltons, Mars Candy, and Koch brothers) have seen their net worth grow by 6,000%. The median while household income of Americans has  decreased by 3%. – Howard Dean

“I Am Just So Sick Of This”

My daughter bemoaned on a call last week. She has one child. He is back in school now, full time. He is too young to be vaccinated, yet he and millions of other children are back in crowded settings daily. It is as if their lives were not nearly as important as having the schools reopen.

Yesterday there were stories circulating at his school that there were corona virus cases. It turned out to be a false rumor. I would bet this will happen more than once during the last 6 or 7 weeks of school. Kids are on edge – and parents are on edge. In his school every one is at least masked.

While there currently are no outbreaks either in his school, nor in his area there will still be a risk. There have been outbreaks in schools in Michigan and Illinois that I have heard of so far.

What is so infuriating about having our children facing a treacherous situation in returning to school is that we as a country have had a year to prepare schools and society for a safe reopening. Reopening had to happen at some point, so we should have started preparing from day 1. Yet preparing for a safe reopening was the furthest thought from Republican leaders as they sought to do the very least they could in response to the pandemic.

The actions of most of America’s Republican governors was pathetic. It was little short of criminal. Reopening of restaurants and bars, keeping meat packing plants running full speed, stopping mask mandates and other actions contributed to the soaring death rate. Among the worst governors of that period was Iowa’s own Kim Reynolds.

At any point when Reynolds had a choice that would help control the virus versus a choice that would cause the pandemic to spread, Reynolds would opt for the latter.

Leaders often have to make decisions that are not popular, but are necessary for the good of the whole. Reynolds’ decisions were neither. Instead they were focused only on their effect on the business community. Had Reynolds made a few decisions that would have noticeably slowed the spread of the virus in Iowa our schools would be in better shape today. But Reynolds was playing partisan politics, not playing for the good of the whole.

We have seen this in state after state across the country from Ron DeSantis in Florida who pours gas on the fire of the pandemic daily, to Greg Abbot in Texas to Reynolds compadres in the upper midwest in Nebraska, and North and South Dakota.

While these governors played partisan politics, parents across the country reap what was sowed by those governors as they worry daily about their children being exposed to a deadly virus or catching an infection which may have lifetime implications.

Republican led states hold down 12 of the top 13 spots in corona virus cases per capita with North Dakota, South Dakota and Iowa coming in at positions 1, 2 and 4 respectively.

One of the most important aspects every one should look for when they cast their vote for a leader is to look for someone who will be making decisions for the best of the whole population. In the last election, Fred Hubbell was clearly that candidate in Iowa, based on his business and civic experience. Kim Reynolds stood out as being very weak and partisan in this area.

Reynolds was elected and the worst possible scenario unfolded. Iowa needed someone who could make decisions for the best of the state. Instead we got a governor who decisions were fully partisan, almost as if they were directed by the White House.

Iowa better learn a lesson. Reynolds will not make a huge turnaround by 2022. As a matter of fact we will most likely still be fighting corona virus problems created by Reynolds poor leadership. Reynolds had a chance and she blew bog time. Learn your lesson Iowa, Reynolds won’t.

The Senate Imbalance

In a country where one man/one vote is supposed to be the ruling philosophy, the Senate makes a real mockery of that concept. As shown in the illustration above seven low population states, including Iowa, swing a big hammer in the senate whereas California is barely represented.

The little blue spot in the corner in California is Los Angeles County. LA County is the largest county in the US by population with 10 million people. That is about 1/4 of the total population of California. Therefore, mathematically, if LA has 1/4th of California’s population then they have 1/4th of California’s 2 senators or 1/2 of a senator.

The large red swath has 7 states and approximately the same 10 million people. The states in the picture are Iowa (3 Million), Nebraska (2 million), South Dakota (.75 M), North Dakota (.75 M), Montana (1 M), Idaho (2 M) and Wyoming (.5 M). Seven states  = 14 senators. Of those 14 senators only one that I know of is a Democrat. That is Jon Tester of Montana.

So – a little more math – the 10 million people in the 7 states have 28 times as much power in the Senate as the 10 million people in LA County. (14 divided by 1/2).

Such an imbalance of power in favor of Republicans is one of the many things that keeps any legislation to meet the country’s needs from being passed.

As if that wasn’t enough, in the current 50/50 split in the Senate, Democratic senators represent 42 million more people than Republican senators. Once again dong some math, with a population of @330 million, that means that Democrats represent nearly 186 million people while Republicans represent about 144 million. Percentage wise that means Democrats in the senate representation 56.5% while Republicans represent 43.5%.

From the Guardian of March 12th

But critics of the US Senate say that for years now, the chamber has not been a field of fair democratic play, paralyzed by its own internal rules and insulated from the popular will by a 230-year-old formula for unequal representation.

Instead, its critics say, the Senate has become a firewall for a shrinking minority of mostly white, conservative voters across the country to block policies they don’t agree with and safeguard the voter suppression tactics that shore up Republican power.

The numbers are staggering. Currently Democratic senators represent nearly 40 million more voters than Republican senators – but the Senate is split 50-50, with the vice-president, Kamala Harris, wielding the tie-breaking vote. By 2040, 70% of Americans are expected to live in the 15 largest states, and to be represented by only 30 senators, while 30% of Americans will have 70 senators voting on their behalf, according to analysis by David Birdsell of Baruch College’s School Of Public And International Affairs. The Senate has counted only 11 African American members in its history, out of almost 2,000 total.

“There’s no doubt that the Senate is broken and has been broken for a long period of time,” said Ira Shapiro, a former Senate staffer, Clinton administration trade official and the author of Broken: Can the Senate Save Itself and the Country?. “It’s been in decline probably for 30 years, and that decline has deepened over the last 12 years.”

As you may have noted from the excerpt, this is a trend that will be getting worse as metropolitan areas grow and rural area shed population. In a few years the situation may become totally baked into the system.

As of they needed to, Republican legislatures in some 43 states have passed or introduced bills to suppress the votes those potentially on the left.

We are at the very crossroads of America passing from some resemblance to a democracy to a permanent oligarchy with the Senate being a fixed minority ruled Republican institution.

With that I will make an early appeal to vote for whoever runs against Grassley in 2022.

Join the Spread the Relief Campaign!

PACG has partnered with our friends at One Human Family QCA, Immigration Office of the Diocese of Davenport, Metrocom NAACP and Quad Cities Interfaith in the “Spread the Relief” campaign. We encourage people to donate all or part of their COVID relief funding to programs and agencies that are helping those in our communities who have been more severely impacted by the downturn of the economy. Three areas of concern are food assistance, housing assistance and health care.

Rabbi Henry Carp, co-founder of One Human Family QCA states that, “The goal of the campaign is to call upon our neighbors in the greater Quad-City area whose income and financial security have not been negatively impacted, but who will be receiving stimulus checks from the federal government as part of COVID relief. We ask these people to consider donating all or part of their stimulus funds to programs and agencies that are providing assistance to those most seriously affected by the pandemic. In this way we can ‘Spread the Relief’ to those in dire need.”

A very extensive list of organizations to which stimulus dollars can be donated is listed in our Spread the Relief Catalogue blog post. Select a category of need (at the top of the blog post) and then choose an organization to donate to. Write “COVID Relief” in the memo line of your check.Read more in our blog post in the comments below. http://www.pacgqc.org/…/join-the-spread-the-relief…
