Sunday Funday: More Patriotic Summer Edition

The Revolutionary War Simplified (15 minutes). Found this rather delightful little video and thought some might enjoy it.

In an age when outrageous quotes are dropped hourly, I found this Mike Pence quote in a Woodbury county campaign stop jaw dropping  ”I’m somebody that – I really don’t buy into the idea rich need to pay their fair share (of taxes)” Revolution anyone?

I think we can be sure every other Republican feels that way, it is just not smart to say it out loud.

We shall sneak in a few more patriotic summer type questions. Next week we shift to fair season and then back to school already.

H) What administration official is in Beijing trying to patch up economic parts of the US – China relationship?

I) Where’s Waldo -uh – I mean where in the world is Yevgeny Prigozhin?

J) The price of a US postage stamp will go to $.66 today. Who is still, amazingly, US Postmaster General?

More Good Economic News From Biden

Biden delivers economic address in South Carolina (28 minutes)

Gets pretty monotonous doesn’t it? Every month there are a series of economic reports that take the temperature of the of the nation’s economic health. Since becoming President, Biden has faced down crisis after crisis with a steady hand on the tiller guiding a soaring US economy as other world economy falter.

Coming into office, the President faced a horrific mess left by the previous administration after the purposeful inept management of the pandemic crisis that left the economy in a state of disaster. Just to add to the problem the previous administration refuse to share vital economic information in an attempt to make the incoming Biden administration fail.

Yet President Biden guided by policies and norms from previous Democratic administrations took on the challenges in an orderly manner and continues to come to positive outcomes in nearly all cases. He had to start with taming the pandemic, no easy task considering the mess he was left.

From there, Biden’s administration has taken on supply chain issues, law wages, and of course an ongoing stubborn inflation that is in the process of being tamed. Friday we got news that Biden’s economy again created a good 209,000 jobs. This would be a great number for any other president and really high for a Republican. Biden’s economy has been so robust that to some this very good number was a little disappointing.

We have to temper this report with the fact that the Federal Reserve and Jerome Powell are actively enacting policies to stop growth in order to stop inflation.

In the first 2 years and 5 months the Biden administration has created an incredible, eye popping 13 million jobs, most of them good paying jobs. Unemployment is at a 50 year low. Considering the shambles that the Trump administration left the economy in, that is an incredible number.

We are seeing industries bringing manufacturing back home to America and also seeing foreign companies investing in America. The amount of money coming back into the country in the form of new manufacturing is incredible. And the pace is picking up. We see Republicans who voted against every Biden initiative clawing to take credit for what Biden’s initiative are doing, including Iowa’s representative.

This is a great story, a truly historic story. It is too bad that Americans are not hearing this story. America’s news media that is in the grip of the far right wing corporations seldom says tells the true story of this incredible recovery. Because of that many Americans have a negative view of the economy even though they have not been such good shape since the beginning of Reaganomics.

President Biden has reoriented the economy to “build from the bottom up and the middle out.” This has always been the Democratic playbook because that is simply the best, most solid and most equitable to build the economy. It worked under President Franklin Roosevelt, President Kennedy, president Johnson, President Carter, President Clinton, President Obama and now is going bonkers under President Biden.

Of course it hasn’t been too hard for Democrats to look good after Republicans from Nixon to Reagan to Bush, Bush and Trump have left the economy in some form of a shambles with most of the economic reward going to the extremely wealthy at the top as those wealthy pay little or nothing in in taxes.

Once again, Americans can sleep soundly knowing that the man guiding the economy knows what he is doing, and that this man is not a puppet of corporations but a man of the people who puts them first.

If ever a man has earned a second term it is Joe Biden. We surely do not want to go back to the top down ruins of Republican economics.

Reynolds Call Special Session To Cut Iowans Rights

Got this email from Progress Iowa Wednesday afternoon July 5th. Certainly the the irony that Independence Day was just the day before was not lost on most of those who received this email:

Just when you thought she couldn’t sink any lower, Governor Reynolds called for a special session specifically to take freedom away from Iowans. It’s unacceptable and flies in the face of what we value in our state.

We know the majority of Iowans believe in reproductive freedom. That’s why we must amplify our values and use our collective voice to stop the Governor and MAGA legislature from ripping away our rights.

Please sign this petition to support reproductive freedom and share the content below on various platforms!

Click to Tweet: I believe that your reproductive decisions are none of Iowa politicians’ business! Join me and stand against the special session attacking abortion rights by signing the petition here: bit.ly/reproiowa

Thanks for all your advocacy, we couldn’t make progress without you.
– The Progress Iowa Team

Roland Martin blows a fuse on “pro-life” BS (18:30 but pretty much done at 16:00)

What people speculated about for the past two weeks or so since the Iowa Supreme Court failed to rubber stamp Reynolds highly restrictive abortion bill that has been on hold for a few years. As expected. Reynolds has decided to call the Iowa legislature into special session to take the right of women to control their reproductive lives and put it into the hands of extremist right wing Republican politicians.

So what is so critical that this legislation couldn’t wait a few months until the regular legislative session in January? While those who want to control women’s reproductive lives for them would probably claim they need to step in before another life is lost.

As someone who looks behind every statement that such extremists make, my take would be that those in the legislature who plan to take away women’s rights need to have as much space between their vote to take away rights and the next election. The extremists hope that Iowans who believe that women should control their own bodies will forget about their votes the longer the gap is between that vote and the election.

That was the basic reason why Governor Reynolds wanted the Supreme Court to rule that her restrictive bill would become law. If the Supreme Court decided that the restrictive abortion bill was law, extremist legislators would not have to answer for their vote. But now legislators will have to vote in public and be ready to defend their votes in next years elections. So in their thinking better to put a few extra months in between their vote and the election for Iowans to have collective amnesia.

But Iowans won’t have collective amnesia. Thanks to Reynolds decision to call a special session, there will be an extra hot spotlight on the legislators. The other person who will remember how each Republican legislator  votes is Governor Reynolds herself. Given her history of primarying legislators who didn’t vote her way you can bet she will be hanging that threat over every Republican legislator.

Given that female reproductive rights are favored by some 62% of all Iowans, Reynolds will put Republican legislators in an interesting vice – vote against Reynolds and get primaried or vote with Reynolds and very possibly lose the general. They also have the burden of the highly unpopular privatizing of the school system to defend to voters as those voters watch their vaunted school system slowly get dismantled.

So Reynolds is using a Donald Trump move to get her way on abortion. She is not up for election, so it doesn’t affect her.

As we watch the religious right impose their religion on the state, remember there will be real world consequences. Expect doctors to leave the state not to be replaced. Even in right wing world politicians are not a replacement for real doctors – or nurses.

Iowa women will die. Women are already dying across the country where extremist laws have been enacted. We do not know yet what the bill that is put forward will look like, but I think it would be a good guess that there will be extreme punishment both for those seeking an abortion and those providing abortions.

The bottom line here is that a bunch of cowardly politicians are being called to Des Moines at our expense to force their religious beliefs on the state of Iowa. I have written about the religious background of the anti-abortion laws previously. Strategists in the Republican Party who couldn’t care less about abortion took up the cause to get evangelicals to vote for their party.

Once this is passed, as I am sure it probably will given the lack of spines on the Republican side, I think you can safely plan that highly restrictive bills on contraception will be right behind in the pipeline.

As noted in the Roland Martin video above extremist Republicans are only interested in births – they care little about the lives of the children born.

The sordid and cynical history of this issue and its links to racism is told here by historian Randall Balmer.

I have a feeling that Reynolds very cynical move will backfire on her like an old Model T with Iowans banging at their legislators openly about their votes to restrict women’s reproductive rights.  Gen Xers, Gen Zers and parents of those in their reproductive years want access to reproductive services.

Let me add a reminder that there will be a protest as the special session commences Tuesday at 8AM at the capitol. Please try to make it.

Kim Reynolds Calls Special Session To Undermine Reproductive Rights

From our inbox. Please share this action alert from Iowa House Democratic Leader Rep. Jennifer Konfrst.

Kim Reynolds just announced a special session in just six days to undermine our reproductive rights. We’ve known from day one that Kim Reynolds would try to completely ban the right of Iowans to control their own bodies and choices, and now she is calling a special session to have her GOP allies rubber stamp her extreme agenda. We’re running ads in battleground districts right now to hold Republicans accountable for taking away reproductive freedom from us. Can you rush in $20 to help me get the message out?

The right to make your own healthcare decisions is one of the most fundamental rights we have as Americans. More than 60% of Iowans support legal abortion, but Kim Reynolds doesn’t care about the voices of Iowans. While the Governor supports the radical, anti-choice agenda of out-of-state special interests, I’m going to fight like hell for Iowans. But I can’t do it alone.

I know it’s exhausting watching Republicans attack the most vulnerable Iowans time and again, but we can’t give up hope. We must fight back every chance we get. Can I count on your support to protect the right to reproductive freedom?

In solidarity,

Rep. Jennifer Konfrst

Revitalizing Citizen Climate Advocacy Conference

Action alert from Rob Hogg –

Please join us in Marshalltown on Saturday, July 8, for an in-person conference, “Revitalizing Citizen Climate Advocacy,” starting at 9:00 a.m. and running through 4:30 p.m. at the Iowa Valley Community College conference center. (The conference center is located south of Highway 30 on the south side of campus at the entrance near the ball fields.)

This is a great chance to re-connect with Iowans across the state and renew our involvement in citizen climate advocacy. As the climate crisis deepens, we need more citizens getting involved for the climate action we so urgently need. It’s time for much more significant action on climate.

Sponsored by the Iowa Chapter of Citizens Climate Lobby, the conference will feature a panel at 1 p.m. with speakers from the Iowa Environmental Council, the Sierra Club Beyond Coal  campaign, Iowa Interfaith Power & Light, and the Clean Energy Districts of Iowa.

For more details, and to register, visit:
https://www.eventbrite.com/e/revitalizing-citizen-climate-advocacy-iowa-ccl-statewide-meeting-tickets-640822616697

[Can’t attend in person? We will be sharing portions of the day virtually by zoom. You can join us at this zoom link.]

Hope to see you on July 8.

Rob

P.S. If you can’t make it, please take a few minutes this week to write or call one or more of our US Representatives (Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Ashley Hinson, Zach Nunn, and Randy Feenstra) to urge them to do more (not less) to help us cut climate pollution by 50% or more by 2030. It’s what the science says is now required to avoid the worst consequences of climate change. See the”take action” page of the Citizens Climate Lobby website or just call their local or DC offices.

Iowa Press To Vander Plaats: “What Does Michelle Obama Have To Do With It?”

On this weekend’s episode of Iowa Press, as if it were a normal, natural, perfectly reasonable thing, Iowa Press moderator Kay Henderson opened the show this way:

“Bob Vander Plaats and his Family Leader organization still wield power and influence among conservative Christians in Iowa. We’ll sit down and talk politics with him on this edition of Iowa Press.”

Sorry, but it just seems a bit ironic that the reason he is invited to be on a political show is because he is a religious leader.  In Iowa, evangelical Christians – are very much involved with what goes on at the capitol.  The panel did ask BVP the question, what about other religions and what about the separation of church and state. To which he replied separation of church and state only has to do with protecting church from state not the other way around. Yes, he got away with that.

Two things stand out in this episode of Iowa Press. First, there were several deeply disturbing things BVP said which illuminated the deeply disturbing reality of who is controlling our state government. The other thing that stood out to me was that the panel actually asked some decent questions for a change. They didn’t follow up on everything he said, but they did a pretty good job with the questions.

Clay Masters asked, did BVP think the three judges who didn’t rule their way on abortion should be impeached?  BVP said, “I definitely think that should be on the table.”

Masters followed up with, “where do you draw the line? This seems to be politicizing the judiciary.” You’ll have to watch for BVP’s response.

Henderson pointed out that a “firm majority of Iowans believe there should be access to abortion.”

BVP replied in part, “what a great opportunity for the church to be the hands and feet of Jesus at this time in a post-Roe world.”

The conversation turned to presidential candidates. When asked about Trump BVP changed the subject.  “I think what you’re seeing with Joe Biden and with Kamala Harris or whether it’s Newsom or Michelle Obama, it is an extreme out of step agenda for this country.”

Michelle Obama? Is she running?

Henderson: “So, what does Michelle Obama have to do with policy at the federal level?”

Go Kay! Proud of you!

BVP: “I bring up Michelle Obama because I believe she still will be a player in 2024.”

Hey Bob, really not Christian of you what you did there.

Not all of the panel’s questions were great. Like this one:

Henderson: “You have a big event coming up at which Tucker Carlson will be sort of an emcee. Has Fox News given you any grief about that?”

BVP seemed happy to report, “Fox News has given us no grief at all. And Tucker Carlson, I asked him, he’s a friend and I asked him back in February, and he said, boy I’d love to do this and he got the thumbs up from Fox to do it.”

Yippee. Pope Bob gushing over the likes of Tucker Carlson.  If it wasn’t all so sad and pathetic it would be hilarious.

Brianne Pfannenstiel’s questions about BVP’s assessment of the Republican candidates seemed totally irrelevant to what Iowans need to know. Not everyone in Iowa, not even every Republican, is an evangelical Christian or cares in the slightest what BVP thinks about his fellow MAGA R’s.  Bob said himself, “I’m not a never Trumper.”

If you have a mind to watch, Kay did an excellent job of setting BVP up for a sting. First she asked him, “What does it mean to be an evangelical Christian?”

Vander Platts:  “.. you have been born again… But our ministry specifically is we want to inspire the church, the Church of Jesus Christ, to engage this arena of government to advance God’s kingdom and to bless the institution of family.”

Henderson continues: “What is your definition of Christian nationalism? And is there a danger in this movement that it is moving in that direction?”

BVP:  “When David was in Jerusalem and he looked to the mountains and he said, where does my help come from?  …He said, my help comes from the Lord. So, we say look higher.  This is where Jesus tells Peter get your eyes off of this world and think bigger, think eternally… Our Savior came to give life and give life abundantly now. So, expect more at this time.”

Henderson:  “So, why do you have lobbyists at the legislature advocating for certain pieces of legislation?”

Indeed.

BVP: We have a church network that is at the Capitol every day ..the institution of government is God’s institution. God instituted the institution of government for the pursuit of righteousness and the pursuit of justice. And so that’s why they’re there for that. ”

Excuse me, did you all know that? That they have their church people at the Capitol every day? Just like a Koch Brothers lobbyist?

Good job, Kay.

Clay Masters continued the thread.  “There’s some major construction going on in the Des Moines area near Ankeny and Bondurant for a campus for The Family Leader. Why do you need such a big infrastructure?”

BVP went on for a bit about his big plans for the facility, then said, “…we didn’t want to be right at the Capitol to be a “lobbyist” but we wanted to be outside of that.”

Appearances still matter, apparently.

It wasn’t like the panel succeeded in embarrassing him even with really good questions. Republicans can’t be embarrassed  because they have no shame. But to those of you who have sworn off Iowa Press, this is one I would recommend watching.

Let’s Go To Lasers For Light Shows

Flagstaff, Az. (6 minutes)

This is only a small sample of what lasers can do

As the world is burning it just makes sense for government and community organizations who sponsor Independence Day fireworks displays to come into the 21st century and try their hands at being creative with laser and drone displays.

There are a huge amount of advantages to doing away with the danger and the waste of fireworks displays. As Canada burns and the US chokes on the smoke the first advantage should be obvious – we wouldn’t be putting huge clouds of pollutants into the air or burning down the planet.

A second advantage is also obvious – even with trained personnel, every year workers are injured and some killed setting off fireworks displays. Why do we do this when there are safe and spectacular alternatives?

A third obvious advantage is money. With fireworks we are literally blowing up thousands and thousands of dollars for a one time thrill at a time when budgets are very tight. With lasers and drones, Once the show is over, the equipment can be packed up and reused with only a minimal expense. Maybe some communities would even drag the equipment out for a Halloween, Christmas or New Year’s show.

One other thought is that with fireworks, buyers are limited to what the firework manufacturers sell. With configurable lasers and drones, the show can be reconfigured every time it is used.

And of course if a family wants to do their own thing, why not do it with lasers and electronics rather that disturbing your neighbors with the noise and smell of fireworks? Plus with lasers you won’t accidentally burn down your neighbor’s house or start a forest fire. And it may keep you from killing yourself or your kids.

Finally there are many Americans, particularly veterans who suffer from PTSD. Using lasers and electronics the excessive noise could be eliminated. Don’t forget pets many of whom will spend the night cowering in some corner in fear.

Give it some thought.

Sunday Funday: Happy Fourth of July, Y’all Edition

Most of us have never heard the story of Benedict Arnold. So here is a quick (4 minute) video of his story:

With Donald Trump’s duplicity, I find myself thinking not of the brave patriots that usually occupy our minds as we celebrate our independence but instead of Benedict Arnold. It was amazing that the US survived and thrived with such a traitor high in our ranks. Now we find that such stories and traitorous people are with us daily and can be at the center of power.

As the case against Trump clarifies, our country must act as if Trump has distributed documents to our enemies. To proceed without that caution would be foolish. We need to elect congress members who assume that Trump did harm to his country and the rules and punishments must be stricter and tighter. There is simply too much at stake to continue to just trust folks.

We better learn from our mistakes with Donald Trump as we did with Benedict Arnold.

July 4th and revolutionary trivia mostly with current questions today. Have a great holiday:

A) As usual at the end of June, SCOTUS made a lot of headlines. By a vote of 6-3 the high court rejected what theory that would give state legislatures such power in federal elections?

B) Hey, kids! Since yesterday here in Iowa you only have to be how old to serve alcohol?

I) And then there were six. What ‘conservative’ SCOTUS justice joined ‘conservative’ colleagues with questionable deals as a real estate deal after appointment to the Court was revealed?

J) From December 1777 to June 1778 the Continental Army endured extreme hardships while they trained at what encampment near Philadelphia?

K) Well, this is scary – once again a disease that US residents thought had been extinguished is back. What two states reported home grown cases of malaria last week?

L) Be careful where you go this weekend. South Dakota state legislator Joe Donnell revealed that Mt. Rushmore is actually a what?

M) In one more SCOTUS case this week, the Court said employers must do what concerning religious beliefs of their employees?
