Sunday Funday: No Room At The Inn Edition

2.5 minutes

The parallels between our current president and the founder of one of the world’s great religions took another step forward when the current president was turned away by innkeepers in Hamburg as he sought to find a place to stay when he was in a strange city due to someone else’s orders. As with the savior, the current president was also turned away. Not sure about this, but in both cases innkeepers may have wanted to keep their bedding free of pee.

Things seem to have slowed a bit last week. Thanks to a holiday in the middle of the week.

1) The current president’s rage at CNN could possibly play into blocking a merger between what two mega media giants?

2) Unexpectedly what Kansas senator revealed he was against the Republican health care bill a couple of weeks ago?

3) What small town in Iowa had its downtown destroyed in a fire on the fourth of July?

4) Tax revenue shortfalls may cause Gov. Reynolds to dip into the emergency fund. How much is she authorized to transfer without legislative approval?

5) The administration’s bogus voter fraud commission has received refusals from how many states for all the information they asked for?

6) Two of the states that refused to give the voter fraud commission information were those of the commission’s chair and vice-chair. Who are they and what are their states?

7) Hardly anything compared to what happens here, but Canadian PM Justin Trudeau’s failure to mention what province in a speech caused quite a stir north of the border?

8) The current president once again caused a great reaction when he retweeted a video showing him wrestling a person with what logo over his face?

9) NJ Gov. Chris Christie went where no one else could go over the holiday weekend. Where was that?

10) Another brick was put in the wall of the Russian interference investigation when two intermediaries between the Russians and what Trump operative were identified?

11) July 6, 1957 – 60 years ago last Thursday – two boys met in Liverpool. Their partnership would go on change entertainment history. Who were these boys?

12) At the G-20 conference in Hamburg the current president restated his position that who will pay for the proposed international border wall with Mexico?

13) In what has to be the height of irony and arrogance, the current president will be visiting France on what French holiday?

14) In Missouri, the legislature voted to lower the minimum wage in what city from $10 to $7.70?

15) Rendering the Declaration of Independence on twitter garnered what media entity an outpouring of hate response?

16) A Louisiana politician got some well deserved criticism when he posted a selfie video that he filmed where?

17) What auto company announced it would be getting out of gas and diesel engines beginning in 2019?

18) What major Christian company settled with the DOJ on charges that they smuggled thousands of ancient artifacts from Iraq?

19) What world renowned scientists said last week that Trump’s actions on climate may have pushed the earth over the edge where global warming is irreversible?

20) Poland created cheering crowds for our current president by doing what?

Who could have predicted that electing a game show host with a string of business disasters and a glaring personality disorder would turn out so badly? Andy Borowitz.

Answers:

1) AT&T and Time-Warner

2) Jerry Moran

3) Melcher-Dallas

4) $50 million

5) Well they only got 3 to fully comply – so 47

6) Chair – Mike pence of Indiana, vice-chair Kris Kobach of Kansas

7) Alberta

8) CNN

9) on to state beaches closed by a budget impasse

10) Michael Flynn

11) John Lennon and Paul McCartney

12) Mexico

13) Bastille Day – look it up if you need to understand the irony

14) St. Louis. Shades of iowa’s lousy law.

15) NPR. Many on the right thought it was a commentary on the current president

16) inside a former gas chamber at Auschwitz

17) Volvo

18) Hobby Lobby

19) Stephen Hawking

20) busing in people from the countryside.

See you next week!

Taking Away LIHEAP?

Image (1) Trump-Winter-George-RR-Martin-300x300.png for post 35619

As our media breathlessly pursues the current president’s Twitter droppings, the real rape of the American people goes on almost unreported.

About the only thing that is getting reported on besides what a truly incompetent president we have is the horrendous Republican health care bill. It is horrendous and it deserves as much scorn as possible with all sorts of calls to action.

But below these huge stories lie many lesser stories that will inflict huge damage to some portion of the American people. Many of these stories seem mundane and for the most part, the victims of the cuts are not huge in either number or fame. So if reported on at all they are assigned to the back pages of newspapers or magazines. A listing of proposed cuts can be found in this USA Today story.

One such instance is the current proposal to kill LIHEAP or the Low Income Home Energy Assistance program. LIHEAP assists the poor in paying for heating in the cold months in states like Iowa. The most recent numbers I could find in a quick search for Iowa LIHEAP numbers were from a report by the Department of Health and Human Services from 2014.

From the report:

In a recent report, the Iowa Utilities Board found that 243,403 accounts were behind on their utility bills, and these households owed more than $46 million. About 15 percent of the accounts belong to LIHEAP recipients, and they owe approximately $11.7 million of the total outstanding balance.

By the end of February, Iowa LIHEAP said about 76,000 households had applied and received heating assistance. The program plans to take applications until April 30. It told the media that about 86,000 people will utilize LIHEAP assistance by the end of the application period, which is a slight increase from last year’s total of 85,000.

Undoubtedly there is most likely a great similarity in the list of those who receive LIHEAP aid and those who receive Medicaid.

As a citizen of a country that once prided itself on how it took care of the ill, the poor and the elderly we have to wonder just how low can this congress and administration go in their callous treatment of the less fortunate. Hunter at dailykos.com explored the issue Thursday and ended with this thought:

It would probably be unwise to assume that Senate Republicans would not dare do an inhumane thing for fear of public backlash. Not just when it comes to heating aid, but for the duration; the gene seems to have been removed from this particular crop of leaders. They seem to fear no retribution at all, at the polls, and their response to public anger at their public forums has been to simply cancel the forums, citing incivility from the people who will be harmed by their votes.

So yes, it’s possible the Senate will indeed work out a deal to cut the program. There’s no gain in pretending at a lower moral bound here, when there hasn’t been one identified anywhere else. We’ll have to keep our eyes on this one too.

Research Shows Political Polarization Mainly A Right Wing Phenomenon

Roger-Ailes-the-truth-300x224

Yet another example of research confirming the obvious.

http://news.wgbh.org

The CJR study, by scholars at the Berkman Klein Center for Internet & Society, at Harvard Law School, and the MIT Center for Civic Media, examined more than 1.25 million articles between April 1, 2015, and Election Day. What they found was that Hillary Clinton supporters shared stories from across a relatively broad political spectrum, including center-right sources such as The Wall Street Journal, mainstream news organizations like the Times and the Post, and liberal sites like The Huffington Post and The Daily Beast.

By contrast, Donald Trump supporters clustered around Breitbart — headed until recently by Stephen Bannon, the hard-right nationalist now ensconced in the White House — and a few like-minded websites such as The Daily Caller, Alex Jones’ Infowars, and The Gateway Pundit. Even Fox News was dropped from the favored circle back when it was attacking Trump during the primaries, and only re-entered the fold once it had made its peace with the future president.

The authors of the study refer to their findings as “asymmetrical polarization,” and they point to some deleterious effects.

It is a mistake to dismiss these stories as “fake news;” their power stems from a potent mix of verifiable facts (the leaked Podesta emails), familiar repeated falsehoods, paranoid logic, and consistent political orientation within a mutually-reinforcing network of like-minded sites.

Use of disinformation by partisan media sources is neither new nor limited to the right wing, but the insulation of the partisan right-wing media from traditional journalistic media sources, and the vehemence of its attacks on journalism in common cause with a similarly outspoken president, is new and distinctive.

What’s at issue here is not just asymmetrical polarization but asymmetrical news consumption. The left and the center avail themselves of real journalism, however flawed it may be, while the right gorges on what is essentially political propaganda — all the while denigrating anything that contradicts their worldview as “fake news.”

America’s Corrupt Health Insurance System

Roger-Ailes-the-truth-300x224ICYMI, while we’re on the topic of health care…

http://investmentwatchblog.com/

Did you know that before 1973 it was illegal in the United States to profit off of health care? The Health Maintenance Organization Act of 1973 passed by Nixon changed everything.

Is the health insurance business a racket? Yes, literally. And this is why the shameless pandering to robber baron corporations posing as “health providers” is such an egregious … and obvious … tactic to do nothing more than plump up insurance company profits.

And do you know who’s to blame?   Believe it or not, the downfall of the American health insurance system falls squarely on the shoulders of former President Richard M. Nixon.

In 1973, Nixon did a personal favor for his friend and campaign financier, Edgar Kaiser, then president and chairman of Kaiser-Permanente.  Nixon signed into law, the Health Maintenance Organization Act of 1973, in which medical insurance agencies, hospitals, clinics and even doctors, could begin functioning as for-profit business entities instead of the service organizations they were intended to be.  And which insurance company got the first taste of federal subsidies to implement HMOA73 … *gasp* … why, it was Kaiser-Permanente!   What are the odds?  It’s all right here to read for yourself.

And to perfectly cement the Health Maintenance Organization Act (HMOA) of  1973 as the profiteering boondoggle that it actually was, the law Nixon mandated also included clauses that encouraged medical providers to not CURE afflictions, but to PROLONG them by only treating the symptoms. There’s no money to be made in CURING sickness.  But the sky’s the limit when it comes to forcing people to endure repetitive doctor visits, endless (and often useless and redundant) tests, and … of course … let’s not forget the ever-increasing demand for American-made prescription drugs!

Have you noticed recently that the words “prolonged coma” and DEATH have wormed their way into the fast-spoken side-effects list of just about every new drug you see on television or hear on the radio?  Death!  From the medicine that’s supposed to cure you!  You know what?  I’ll take restless legs over DEATH.

So it’s an arms race between insurers, who deploy software and manpower trying to find claims they can reject, and doctors and hospitals, who deploy their own forces in an effort to outsmart or challenge the insurers. And the cost of this arms race ends up being borne by the public, in the form of higher health care prices and higher insurance premiums. Of course, rejecting claims is a clumsy way to deny coverage. The best way for an insurer to avoid paying medical bills is to avoid selling insurance to people who really need it. An insurance company can accomplish this in two ways, through marketing that targets the healthy, and through underwriting: Rejecting the sick or charging them higher premiums.  See the pattern?

4th Of July In Iowa Now A Nightmare For Many

Boxes-of-fireworks-from-one-night-290x300

Remains from just one night. This neighbor started again at 9:30 am. Photo credit: with permission/ FB friend.

Worst 4th of July Ever /Branstad’s Final F*** You

I suppose we can be grateful we’re not living in an actual war zone.  Pushed by Republicans, signed into law by Terry Branstad,  SF 489 legalized the sale of fireworks in Iowa.  Polls supposedly indicated support for fireworks among Iowans.  I hope they re-poll after we get through the worst 4th of July ever and see if everyone still thinks this was a good idea.

All you have to do is go on Facebook for the horror stories.  Next door neighbors launching fireworks that sound like cannons, terrified, shaking dogs hiding in closets, people leaving town to get away from the noise, families unable to put the kids to bed, pillows stuffed in windows, “duds” and debris from explosives on sidewalks, in parks, on your roof. Shut the doors and windows, close yourself in the house, don’t take your dog for a walk.  4th of July week has changed in Iowa from a pleasant family holiday with a few fireworks,  to a pseudo-war zone,  so some can make money on the sale of explosives and the state can make a relatively small amount in tax revenue.

An estimated million a year in tax revenue doesn’t seem like much considering how much Branstad’s gang has given away to corporations in tax breaks.  For this we have to sacrifice our peace and quiet and put up with the sounds of war, not just for a couple of days in July, but in December too, because of course we need fireworks going on two weeks before Christmas through New Years.

fireworks-debris-on-roof-225x300

Found these in our yard, most close to our house. Should we be concerned about potential fire issues if this continues? Photo credit: with permission, FB friend

4th of July used to be my favorite holiday. I enjoyed fireworks shows and didn’t mind the occasional sound of  firecrackers that used to merely mark the holiday, in the same way the start up of a lawn mower is a familiar, comforting sound of summer.  That changed this year.

Now, even where I live where it is against the law to launch fireworks within city limits, there is the near constant pop-pop-pop in the background caused by those who have bought up huge amounts of ammo at the tents in Hy-Vee and other store parking lots everywhere because it is legal to sell them here, even though it is illegal to use them here.

But of course people do it anyway, because you can’t have a fireworks shop on every corner and expect that they won’t get used.  Complaints are too numerous for law enforcement to keep up with. Some in my community say their neighborhoods sound like war zones.

“I’m about ready to take all the contents of the nightly scoop of our cats’ litterboxes, put them in a big paper sack, light it, and throw at the nearest neighbor who’s setting their fireworks off with what sounds like freaking cannons.” said one of my Facebook friends.

And it’s not just the noise.  It is of course a public safety issue.

Here’s one person’s story:

“I just took pictures from Sat night’s fireworks across the street and a bag of remnants which were in our yard (some also on the roof) to the police. Policeman took them to the fire department and was told that they are quite capable of setting a house on fire and there have been a couple of fires reported from the falling remnants. He sympathized with our concern that we cannot (nor can anybody) enter or leave our home with the hot remnants falling down upon them for hour after hour. He said that there is, however, nothing that can be done because it is legal. He suggested that we keep an eye on our home for smoke during the explosions. Does anybody see a problem with this?”

People who have no idea what they are doing are now allowed to buy explosives that should only be used by professionals. There have been house fire, numerous  injuries, at least one injured kitten, and reports of hospitalizations, including a 4-week old infant whose mother had to toss her in order to prevent the child from being hit by a misfired explosive at a private fireworks party. The explosive hit the mom, even though they were more than 50 yards away – half of a football field – causing burns and a broken femur to the child she had to throw in order to save.  Thankfully, as of this writing mother and child are recovering in the hospital but they both will be undergoing surgery.   Read more here.  The family has started a Go Fund Me page for medical expenses.

What to do:

Call your legislator whether they voted for it or not and tell them your personal fireworks story.

Find and contact your legislator here.  https://www.legis.iowa.gov/legislators/find

Write a letter to the editor of your local paper.

This is being passed around on Facebook:  Republican Senator Jake Chapman from Adel was the floor manager of the fireworks bill and has been pushing it for a few years.   This phone number, email and home address is listed on https://www.legis.iowa.gov so it is public information.

Legislative E-mail: jake.chapman@legis.iowa.gov
Home E-mail: jake@votejakechapman.com
Home Address: 25862 Fox Ridge Ln, Adel, IA 50003
Cell Phone: (515)650-3942

Make no mistake, this was a Republican bill.   It would not have passed if Democrats were in the majority. Democrats blocked this legislation when they controlled the senate.

Voting Republican should now be in the category of “no longer an option.”  They continue to prove  how untrustworthy they are over and over again, and how little they care about Iowans.

Every pop, every boom that intrudes on the peace of an Iowa summer day is a torturous reminder that the Koch Brothers puppet Republicans have taken over everything and will continue to do what their corporate masters want, and what they want has nothing to do with what is good for Iowa or America.

Another Year Of Bible Reading On Courthouse Grounds In Iowa

Reynolds-bible-reading-proclamation-226x300

Maybe it is because the fear of losing medicaid, health insurance or having the costs for insurance skyrocket has sucked all the air out of the room. Or maybe it is the continuing saga of how Republicans worked with a foreign government to influence the last election has distracted our attention. There are simply so many things going on at the national level that state issues sometimes get lost.

So it was easy to miss the quietly reported news that once again Iowa and its governor – this time Kim Reynolds – will once again trample on the establishment clause of the constitution by encouraging bible readings to take place on government property across the state.

By encouraging bible readings to take place on courthouse lawns or inside courthouses the governor is promoting one religion – Christianity – over how many thousands of other religions. Beyond that she is promoting religion itself over non-religion or as some might phrase it secularism.

There may not be a count, but from what I have heard there are upwards of 5,000 religions in this world. Based on the establishment clause should not each of these religions be given equal access to read their holy book on government property?Should not Muslims be allowed to read the Quran? Should not Hindus be allowed to read the Vedas and the Bhagavad Gita? Should we not also allow Buddhists to read the Tripitakas? You can see where this is going.

Also, should the non-religious not be allowed to read some books from Dawkins, Darwin, Hitchens or Carl Sagan.

Doing that would at least be fairer, but in truth that would in reality also be violating the establishment clause. Best to simply keep the reading of any religious text off government property except when an individual decides to read some to themselves.

As we enter the festivities for the founding of our country we are reminded of how hard the founding fathers fought to keep religion out of the public square and most certainly to keep it from being entangled with government. The power over both a citizen’s secular and spiritual life can be overwhelming. The founding fathers saw what it did in Europe and wanted none of it.

Yet for some reason despite countless examples to the contrary, Republican officials continue to push hard for religious (specifically Christian) involvement in government from tax breaks to school funding to religion being taught in public classrooms to public prayer at public events (invocations at the beginning of a legislative day) and now we can add bible reading on public property.

Officials must know such conduct is at best over the line, but the prospect of the votes such allowance garners, they are more than willing to step on the constitution – you know – just a little.

Here is a short 2 minute video from Corinth, Mississippi on their bible reading on the courthouse lawn. Mississippi seems to be a state that Iowa has a lot of admiration for these days.

Sunday Funday: Happy Birthday America Edition

Below is an 11 minute video of a really mad constituent letting his congress member – Tom MacArthur – really have a piece of his mind. You may note that our Republican congress members will be avoiding meeting with the public over the holiday – or at least they are not posting their schedules.

Senator Ernst will be sending out surrogates, but you can bet when those surrogates report back to her much of the intensity and passion of our messages will be scrubbed up and muted such that Ernst will not get the flavor.

It is nearly impossible to follow crooks working with Russia on one side while crooks on the other pick your pocket and give it to their rich buddies. Since it is Independence Day Tuesday we will mix in several related questions.

1) The Australian police in Melbourne issued a warrant for the arrest of what prominent Catholic prelate?

2) The tweeting president attacked what prominent cable talk show pair that had given him millions worth of free air time during the election?

3) What are the first words to the Declaration Of Independence?

4) Despite ongoing budget woes caused by Republican mismanagement, Gov. Reynolds said what will be open over the 4th of July?

5) The Republican healthcare(?) bill reached an incredibly low approval rating of what this week?
