Kavanaugh: Net Neutrality Unconstitutional

https://www.fightforthefuture.org/

“Fight for the Future works to protect your rights in the digital age.”

Last week, Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh doubled down on his stance that net neutrality is illegal and unconstitutional.1

If the Senate votes Kavanaugh onto the Supreme Court, telecom giants like AT&T could challenge net neutrality laws all the way to the nation’s highest court. It would be a disaster for the free and open Internet.2

Regardless of how you feel about Judge Kavanaugh’s other views, our basic Internet freedom is too important to let the Senate install an anti-Internet justice on the Supreme Court.

Kavanaugh’s confirmation hearings just ended and senators are deciding RIGHT NOW how they’re going to vote. Click here to tell your senators to defend net neutrality and vote against Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination.

A vote could come in the next few weeks, so we urgently need you to pressure your senator.3

The FCC’s repeal of net neutrality is a temporary setback. We’re fighting in Congress, in the states, and in the courts to restore it. But if big ISPs have a friend sitting on the Supreme Court, he can essentially overrule anything we do to bring back net neutrality.

We only have have a few days left to stop this, and we need your help.

Tell your senator: no enemy of net neutrality on the Supreme court. Vote NO on Kavanaugh.

We’re counting on you,

–Josh, on behalf of FFTF

Dave Loebsack Questions Twitter CEO About Online Harassment

Twitter CEO to Loebsack: “We agree with all your points.”

At a recent House Energy and Commerce Committee hearing with Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter, Dave questioned him about the actions his company is taking to keep teens who use the platform safe and free from harassment. While online communities may allow young people to find friendship and community, Twitter may also be creating new unimaginable crisis for many kids. Social media has been used frequently for abusive purposes like harassment and cyberbullying. And Twitter has too often been too slow to respond when victims report abuse and harassment. Dave called on Twitter to publish a review by an outside organization evaluating what steps Twitter can take to protect our kids while they are online. It must be a goal for all of us to stop this kind of bullying.

J. D. Scholten Raises Questions About King’s Tax Payer Funded Trips To Austria To Meet With Neo-Nazis

Election message from J.D. Scholten:

“With less than two months until Election Day, it’s time for Steve King to step up and answer our challenge to debate. A time-honored tradition of our democracy, the people of Iowa’s 4th Congressional District deserve to see the differences between the candidates running to represent them.

At a time when voters are demanding answers to questions about our economy, our healthcare system, and a looming farm crisis, Steve King hasn’t held a Town Hall, done any public events, or participated in a real debate in years. The people of this district deserve better.

Please watch our official challenge to Steve King, and consider a contribution to our campaign to help hold Steve King accountable for his record of failing to fight for Iowans.

Thank you.

Standing Tall for All,
J.D. Scholten

Low Wages And No Stability: Working In America

republicans-voting-against-iowa-workers-300x169

Labor Day focuses light on stories about labor in this country. There are many publications that cover labor throughout the year but unfortunately most of these articles are ignored. In the era of Dear Leader and his constant assumption of the spotlight many issues are being ignored which is of course what the administration wants.

Hiding what is going on in labor currently is important to the wealthy and well connected who continue to drive down the standard of life for the working people of America. As long as America focuses on the latest tweets from Dear Leader or his latest outrageous comments or actions, there is no time left in the newscast to discuss declining lifestyles, lower pay, few if any benefits or for those just coming of age humongous student debt and lack of opportunity in the job market.

In These Times related a story that is quite typical of the plight of workers today. This story is about a warehouse worker that works for a contractor of Amazon. However, the circumstances are similar to many jobs in America today. Workers are expected to be on call, get paid only when they work and often never achieve full time status:

“Every day at 4:30 a.m., Dwayne Wilson, 25, wakes up to find out whether he’s going to be needed as a forklift driver at the warehouse he works at in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Wilmington. Sometimes he gets a call telling him not to come in. Sometimes he goes in to find out that he’s not needed that day. On average, he works just three eight-hour days per week, at $15 per hour.

The products that Wilson moves are destined for Amazon customers, but Wilson doesn’t work directly for the e-commerce giant. He works for California Cartage, a logistics company that has a contract to unpack shipping containers full of Amazon goods. Wilson says that the majority of the cargo moving through his warehouse is headed straight to Amazon fulfillment facilities.

The national unemployment rate hit 3.8 percent in May, the lowest level since 2000, and companies across the country are complaining about the difficulty of finding workers. Yet Amazon has been able to staff its warehouses with workers who frequently earn little more than the local minimum wage. Many of them are contingent workers like Wilson, who get none of the stability and benefits that often come with working for one of the country’s largest companies.

Amazon has been able to keep finding workers for its warehouses—and keeping wages low—in part by tapping into areas where the economic recovery has been weak. New Jersey and California contain two of the largest numbers of Amazon fulfillment facilities in the United States.”

Corporations are often able to keep wages and benefits low by using contract or temp labor. Temp workers live in a very nebulous world of low pay, no benefits, unreliable work and absolutely no one to stand up for them. The general demise of unions gave corporations the chance to exploit a group of people and they sure did. Republicans have done all they can to expedite this process.

As you read this you may feel a bit of pity for Temp workers. That is one response to this situation, but rather than pity I would hope that readers would understand that they may be only change in the law or a change in regulation from seeing their full time job with benefits turn into a temp job with low pay and no benefits. In the past 37 years of mostly Republican rule we have seen unions decimated beginning with Saint Ronnie crushing the air traffic controllers union (PATCO) and replacing those professionals with military personnel and supervisors.

Remember also that workers in these temp positions are often subject to other Republican inspired policy such as cutting food stamps and the cutting of unemployment insurance. Since 1981 laws have overwhelmingly favored the corporation while stripping most rights from workers. And they ain’t done yet.

So if your a worker and you have been voting Republican out of fear of some “other” or because of some religious belief, you have really screwed yourself. This would be a really good time to peer into the future. If you do, you may see something really scary – a temp job with lower pay and no benefits. This will be a good election to take the first step to stopping that and vote for your own good – vote Democratic.

And you may notice Republicans really don’t care about those religious claims they make. If they did Donald Trump would never have been even nominated.

Corey Booker! Thanks For That Act Of Courage!

“Then Bring It”

We had the TV on in the background while we went about our business Thursday morning. We had the Stephanie Miller Show on Free Speech TV playing. Steph’s producer broke in with a short bulletin – Senator Corey Booker of New Jersey announced during the Judiciary Committee hearings on the nomination of Brett Kavanaugh to the SCOTUS the he (Booker) would release documents marked “Committee Confidential” to the press.

So I quick flipped to cable news in time to see Senator Durbin backing up Booker. I found out later that Senator Cornyn of Texas had already threatened to bring proceedings to remove Booker from the senate for what Cornyn deemed a major transgression.

After some back and forth Senator Booker once again was allowed to speak to defend his position. He was granted this ‘privilege’ by the chair of the committee, Iowa’s own Senator Grassley, in a very condescending manner.

As Booker stated his position that he felt that it was much more important that the information contained in the documents he released be made public than it was that he observe some nebulous rule of the senate. Cornyn tried to interrupt and was finally given the floor. Once again he read the rule and said Booker had violated it.

Booker looked across the room at Cornyn and said. “THEN BRING IT!” Booker stared down the bully and dared him to to start the proceedings to strip him of office. Cornyn may yet do it, but Booker is willing to stand up to bully senators and stupid rules to inform the American people of the character of Brett Kavanaugh.

As noted before, Durbin had backed up Booker on releasing the documents. In a short space of time so did all the Democrats on the committee including Amy Klobuchar, Maize Hirono, Richard Bloomethal, Chris Coons, Kamala Harris, Pat Leahy and others I no doubt forgot.

We will see if Cornyn will follow through. My guess is that he won’t. Standing up for the kind of chicanery that Grassley and his cronies have been pulling in their effort to ram a really unfit candidate onto a lifetime seat on the Supreme Court should be criminal.

Besides hiding a major portion of Kavanaugh’s public record under the guise of confidentiality or some other ruse, what Grassley did release was released at a time that was so late and so huge (42,000 pages on Labor Day evening just a few hours before the hearings were to start) that it would be impossible for anyone to do anything with it.

Grassley was once again playing a bullying game with the nomination of a Supreme Court Justice just as he had done with Merrick Garland. Obviously Grassley doesn’t give two hoots about what is right for the country. Grassley apparently sees his job as doing whatever Trump wants no matter how bad it is. Grassley’s job at the moment is to get Brett Kavanaugh installed in a lifetime appointment on the highest court in the land.

Just as he did in an appearance in Muscatine two and a half years ago while he was blocking Garland’s nomination, Grassley has figuratively raised his middle finger to America and told us all I don’t care what you want!

As for Booker – well I almost didn’t think I would live long enough to see a person jeopardize their career to do the right thing. Corey Booker did that Thursday to a very public audience. He defied the bullies who control the power in the senate risking his position. This is leadership! Thank you, Senator Booker!

Labor Confronts Trump Followers

The column looks at the continuing struggles of American workers to secure a decent standard of living.

by Ralph Scharnau

The stock market currently reaches historic highs, unemployment dips to new lows, and analysts pronounce the economy strong. Despite these idyllic statistics, workers struggle to secure a decent standard of living.

Today, covering the costs of food, housing and child care requires more and more workers to hold two or even three jobs. Living paycheck-to-paycheck also means potential bankruptcy in the event of a medical crisis, higher mortgage/rent and tax payments and/or car repair bills.

Since securing the right to unionize and bargain collectively with employers on wages, hours and working conditions during the New Deal, workers have faced opposition from employers. The opposition ranges from refusing to negotiate, denying full pay, not compensating for overtime, forcing off-the-clock work, misclassifying jobs, hiring union-busting law firms, and outright wage theft.

Touting himself as a champion of the working class, the current occupant of the White House promised more jobs and better pay. Yet workplace participation rates have declined and wages have increased an abysmal 0.64%.

President Trump cuts taxes with negligible benefits for the vast majority of people, but bountiful benefits going to the rich. Trump-Republican political control in Washington and many states has brought cuts in workplace safety funding. There seems, moreover, to be no appetite for investigating on-the-job worker abuses.

In contrast to the anti-worker machinations of the Trump administration, research consistently illustrates the key role that unions play in raising wages and curtailing income inequality.

Unionization raises the average worker’s pay nearly 14%. A recent study found a 4% reduction in the gender pay gap among unionized workers compared with non-unionized workers, even after controlling for variables such as education, experience and geographic location.

Nearly two-thirds of union members between ages 18 and 64 are women and people of color. Unions are especially beneficial to these workers, who often face workplace challenges of discrimination and pay inequity. Unions’ nondiscrimination provisions in collective bargaining agreements also protect LGBTQ rights against discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity.

While clearly not faultless, organized labor provides a continuing countervailing power to the power of management. Unions represent the interests of most wage earners. Organized workers have taken a leading role in pushing for public aid to education, promoting civil rights for all, calling for affordable housing, demanding universal legal rights, supporting health care coverage for everyone, and other programs important to whole communities everywhere.

Last year organized labor netted a very modest 262,000 new recruits. But the movement notched several high profile wins this spring. At Harvard University union leaders organized 5,000 teaching assistants and graduate students. Reacting to deep cuts in education funding, tens of thousands of teachers walked out and won concessions in West Virginia, Colorado, and Arizona. Similar victories occurred following strike authorizations from Teamsters at United Parcel Service and unionized casino workers in Las Vegas.

Union organizers mobilized a referendum campaign that soundly defeated an attempt by Missouri’s Republican-dominated legislature to curb workers’ rights. The ongoing campaigns for the $15 workday constitute another example of labor militancy.
A low wage economy punishes laborers who produce and consume the goods and services that energize the economy. But trade unions traditionally have advocated for all workers, members and non-members.

Those who join unions enjoy better wages and benefits than the unorganized. When unions are strong, all workers, regardless of union status, earn higher wages and the wealthiest Americans’ runaway incomes are constrained. At their best, unions combat the rising inequality that threatens our moral and democratic values.

Howard Dean Gets Donald Trump

Very few pundits that I listen to really get it about Donald Trump. Most of them think there’s a there there as far as Trump is concerned.  They have some pop psychology theory of what makes him tick and say that he is “smart.”  Of all the pundits who regularly comment on Trump, the two who seem to understand his true nature are Steve Schmidt and Howard Dean. So I always feel sane again whenever I listen to either one of them discuss Trump.

Here’s what Dean said on MSNBC’s The Beat with Ari Melber

“When asked if the White House is prepared for a Democratic House takeover, ‘I think they are pretty much wholly unprepared to do anything. Trump is a guy who just thinks in the moment. He has no plan. I actually thought the other day when he was making all those really crazy tweets he might be getting psychotic. So I don’t think there’s any long-term planning. I think the staff tries to engage in long-term planning but you’ve got these neo-Nazi types like Stephen Miller running around. He has an agenda, not the end good of America, but he sucks Trump in every time. There’s an incredibly short-sighted group of people. The ones that have a long-term vision can’t get anything done because Trump is unmanageable.’”
