Real Life Horror Story

The numbers are starting to come in from the superspreader event in our neighboring state of South Dakota known as the Sturgis Bike Rally. They are frightening. If the those fiction writers who wrote some of the classics of the horror genre had written stories with such a plot they would be extremely prod. The plot of our current dilemma should scare anyone to the quick.

We have a fast mutating virus that has skipped species from animal to human. It is a killer, but also has effects that can be life-altering. It is equally at home on any human regardless of age, sex, location or status in life. It spreads quickly and almost imperceptibly with symptoms that don’t show up for days, if at all. Thus the virus can easily be spread by carriers who think they are healthy.

But the biggest trick is in its ability to mutate. So when human with their mighty powers of reason and logic can create vaccines to slow the virus, the virus’s ability to mutate extremely fast gives it power also. And the virus’s opponent, humanity, has among it a large number who will refuse to do anything to fight the spread of the virus.

Unfortunately among the last group is a large number of people with power who are able to block any attempts to stop the virus, thus making it nearly impossible for humanity to mount a campaign focused and large enough to contain the the mutating virus. Even as humans come up with procedures that can stem the virus’s spread and mutation those humans who refuse to cooperate are in reality the virus’s best friend and biggest victim.

And just this little hook for pathos: While vaccines have become easily available for those over 12, children under 12 can not be vaccinated. Despite that, those in power in many regions of the country have decided that these children must be physically taught in schools that are well set up to allow the virus to spread almost unabated. The one weapon these kids get against the virus. – a mask over their mouth and nose – has been greatly discouraged by those in power who seem to be working for the virus.

Quite a story line, huh? We could also add in those seemingly sentient adults who refuse to be vaccinated for various flimsy reason including religious beliefs. They would rather trust their health to some loudmouth on the internet they never met who is touting such quack cures as ivermectin and hydroxychloroquine.

Maybe too far fetched and involved? Guess we could add in that one of the two major political parties is aiding the spread of the virus under the blessing of its disgraced but still popular leader. In order for regional leaders within that party to advance they must seek approval of the disgraced leader. Thus their decisions have little to do with what is good for society and much more to do with their career. Reasoning for bad decisions can easily be hidden under the guise of “freedom” and “liberty” as they define them

With that as a background let’s take a look at just how this real life shit-show is progressing. Of interest to Iowans is how our own Covid Kim Reynolds is doing. Oh, by the way, Reynolds doesn’t like the moniker “Covid Kim.” As reported by iowastartingline.com:

Price suggested that some people think she has been uncaring in her actions throughout the pandemic.

“That’s not true, it’s not accurate,” she replied. “You know, I have to take a look at the data, surround myself with experts that give me feedback, we did that.”

Some of those decisions she’s taken have included banning schools and localities from requiring people to wear masks, requiring schools to offer in-person instruction for the spring 2021 semester, and resisting calls to implement more COVID safety measures last year. Reynolds also pushed back on federal calls from experts to put some of these in place.

I suspect that as the school year goes on and Iowans have to deal with the very preventatble deaths of school children her new nickname will be “Killer Kim.”

And how is Iowa doing? Pretty bad, but maybe not as bad as Texas or Florida or South Dakota for that matter. From the Des Moines Register:

The 7,112 new COVID-19 cases reported in the past seven days brings Iowa’s total for the pandemic over 400,000 for the first time. The daily average of new reported cases over the past week topped 1,000 for the first time since January.

It’s a similar average to what was reported in the state in mid-October 2020. The rate of new cases means a new Iowan tested positive for COVID-19 roughly once every 90 seconds over this week of reporting.

The worsening numbers have Polk County officials on high alert.

“Our hospitals are full.  Our healthcare workers are tired. Parents and guardians are scared to send their children to schools,” Polk County Health Director Helen Eddy said in the news release. “We implore everyone to step up, once again, and do the right thing for the people you love and care about, for our community and for the 82,000 kids in Polk County who cannot be vaccinated.”

While Reynolds has really screwed it up, she is but a pop gun to the big bazooka that is South Dakota’s Kristi Noem:

But while Southern states have been the main drivers of this surge thus far, the recent spike in cases in South Dakota warrants special concern.

The state more broadly has witnessed a 686.8 percent increase in daily case counts over the past three weeks, currently more than 10 times the nationwide rate. Meade County’s post-Sturgis uptick is certainly a contributor to this state-level increase, but neighboring counties have experienced a sharp incline in cases, too—ranging from a 1,900 percent increase in the past three weeks in Butte to a 1,050 percent increase in Lawrence.

The story elaborates on the devastation that Noem is causing in South Dakota. You will be happy to know that Noem will stand up against mandated vaccinations. That could eventually affect you and me. But it may help her reach her ambition of being president. Imagine that.

Finally for today, as I have run on way too long, we have one of the two vying to be the Killer King, Mr. Greg Abbot of Texas. The other is of course Ron DeathSentence of Florida. But right now I will Gove Abbot the nod for this bit of one-upmanship when it comes to dealing out death and suffering:

Gov. Greg Abbott on Wednesday announced an executive order banning government COVID-19 vaccine mandates in Texas regardless of a vaccine’s approval status with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Mr. Abbot is a one man wrecking ball. He treats the Covid-19 virus as a buddy to do business with. Sadly Abbot’s business right now is to burnish those anti-government crews, no matter who dies. That is extremely popular in today’s Republican Party. I predict that Abbot may be the man to bring back polio, pertussis, scarlet fever and other childhood diseases as his mission mutates (ha!) into stamping out all vaccinations. Let’s hope he isn’t contagious.

Republican Pollster Frank Luntz Says He’s No Longer A Republican

Frank Luntz is an important figure in how we got here. He has some kind of weird talent that helped Republicans win for decades.   Now he claims to no longer be a Republican. In that way that Republicans have of sounding like they can make sense for a little while before veering off into crazyland, Frank Luntz  does this in the interview. So take it with a grain of salt if you watch. According to Luntz, Trump didn’t listen to him.  And there are some other interesting snippets such as this one.

“Trump never understood that the moment that Nancy Pelosi became speaker was going to be the worst moment of his life. He thought he’d roll over her in a second. And she embarrassed him again and again and boy did that make him mad. He couldn’t hide that anger. And so he shut down the government in spite.”

Democrat Christina Bohannan Announces Candidacy For Congress IA-02

Christina Bohannan, Democrat-Iowa City, announced her candidacy today for U.S. Congress in IA-02, formerly represented by Dave Loebsack now held by Republican Marianette Millelr-Meeks of Ottumwa.  Check out her campaign website.

Let’s elect a cool, qualified, and smart representative in IA-02.

###

I’m excited to share the news: Today I am launching my campaign for Congress right here in Iowa’s Second District.

Growing up, my family valued hard work above all else. My father was a construction worker who worked long hours in the hot sun for little pay. But when he got sick, his insurance was cancelled, and we were forced to choose between paying for his medicine and paying for everything else.

I’m running for Congress because there is so much at stake — for our kids, our families, and our communities. People like my dad, who work hard and do their part, should be able to make a living without the fear of everything they worked for being ripped out from under them.

In 2020 this district was THE closest race in the nation, and you can bet it will be just as competitive this time around. My dad taught me never to shy away from a challenge, and I’m confident this team has what it takes to win, but we have to start today if we want to flip IA-02. Will you chip in what you can and become a founding donor today?

As a child living in a trailer in a small town, I never expected to go to college, become a law professor, or be elected as a State Representative. But through hard work and the support of my community, I did. I’m running because I want to ensure our kids have the same fair shot I did — the chance to do things you never thought were possible, through hard work and dedication.

I’m ready to work hard to win this race, but I can’t do it alone. Will you join me and pitch in a founding donation today?
If you’ve saved your payment information with ActBlue Express, your donation will go through immediately.

Christina Bohannan is a mom, law professor, former environmental engineer, and State Representative. She’s running to represent Iowa’s 2nd Congressional District in Congress because she believes everyone deserves a fair shot.  Can we count on you to chip in a few dollars to Christina’s campaign?

Why Did Our National Media Reform Movement Die?

The last national conference on media reform was in 2013.

Many of you are well aware of the situation as described in this video and have likely lived through  it. Some of you were media activists during the time frame being discussed.  You may have even taken action against your local Clear Channel station – or your local Sinclair TV station.

BFIA has been posting about media issues since our early days. We have seen a robust media reform movement come and go in just a few short years.  Now we’re all in a position of having to say things like, “wind turbines don’t cause cancer” and “vaccines will not alter your DNA” and “God can still hear your prayer through your mask.”

You might also ask, why does Iowa have fourteen right wing commercial talk radio stations with overlapping, repetitive content that is nothing but hate speech, lies and distortions?

Media reform activism used to be a real thing.  And it wasn’t that long ago. Why did it die?

At what was to be the last national conference on media reform in 2013, one of the organizers, Craig Aaron of FreePress said this:

“Over the past decade, we’ve seen remarkable growth in, awareness of and activism around media and technology issues,” Aaron said. “Millions have demanded a say in who owns the media, what kind of information their communities need, and what the future of the Internet should look like. As we celebrate those victories, we’ll also strategize and mobilize for the challenges in Washington, around the country, and across the world.”

BFIA was at the Memphis conference in 2007. Here is a partial list of famous speakers with household names:   Bill Moyers, Rev. Jesse Jackson, Jane Fonda, FCC Commissioners Michael Copps and Jonathan Adelstein, Geena Davis, Amy Goodman, Phil Donahue – and that was just one year. Other years included Bernie Sanders, Nancy Pelosi, Danny Glover, Van Jones, Al Franken, Patti Smith, Naomi Klein, and on and on.

What happened??

If anyone has the answer, kindly put it in the comments.

Sadly, you can’t always fix things that get broken. We hope that isn’t true in this instance.

March On For Voting Rights This Saturday

MARCH ON OLD CAPITOL FOR VOTING RIGHTS

  • Saturday, August 28, 2:00 PM
  • 21 North Clinton St.
  • Iowa City, IA
    Facebook event info.

https://marchonforvotingrights.org/

Since January, 48 states have introduced 389 bills that amount to shameful, outright voter suppression, and many have already become law. These laws suppress voting methods that enrich our democracy and lead to high turnout: banning ballot drop boxes and mail-in voting, reducing early voting days and hours, restricting who can get a mail-in ballot, prohibiting officials from promoting the use of of mail-in ballots even when voters qualify, even criminalizing the distribution of water to voters waiting in the long lines these laws create.

Racist, anti-democratic voter suppression laws amount to rigging the game. But in America, elections are not a game—and lives depend on their outcomes.

That’s why, on Saturday, August 28, 2021, we’re marching on Washington, Atlanta, Miami, Houston, Phoenix and cities across America.

Weaponizing Covid

Why has the right chosen Covid-19 to use as an issue divide the country in what has become known as “the culture wars?” Also, why have they chosen to use the Covid-19 virus as their weapon of choice in this culture war?

These are questions that have had many of us really confounded and scared.  First the very fact that we are seeing a pandemic where people are not only not trying to avoid getting the disease, but seem to be actively seeking to get sick in order to break whatever systems have been built to contain the spread and to stop any progress in quelling it. It defies logic and the supposed instincts of humans.

There is a large segment of right wingers who are willingly turning themselves into human sacrifices. Not sure for what, though. Their leaders seem to care little about their sacrifice. Plus the ideals they are sacrificing themselves for are mostly lies.

Yet since the highly effective vaccines have become available in January those on the right have used avoiding vaccines as a sort of battle tactic in the culture war. This tactic has been formulated and pushed by their political leaders and their leaders in the media such as Fox News, One America Network and many websites and social media.

One of the most ironic (or maybe better described as cynical) aspects of the leadership in this effort is that the leaders are almost all fully vaccinated while they urge their followers to sacrifice themselves. Purely cynical. Last week’s case of Texas governor Greg Abbott was the very epitome of this cynicism. He was among the very first in the country to be vaccinated back in December. Since then he has been tested daily for Covid. As soon as he had a positive test he was immediately treated with a booster shot and a monoclonal infusion. He has no intention of being sick.

Up and down the line their leaders seek the safety of vaccination – Donald Trump, Tucker Carlson, Kim Reynolds, Ron DeSantis, Greg Abbott – push their followers, often unvaxxed, to avoid and denigrate masking, which has been shown to be a successful strategy as long as most people mask.

For some reason these cynical leaders have taken their Pro-Covid campaign into the public schools, forcing children who cannot be vaccinated to go to school in a virus filled environment. They knowingly are sending our children into an almost certain illness situation with death as a possibility.

This slaughtering of innocents, as it were, should go against the grain of every American, especially when there are ways to prevent such a situation. Yet we are inundated with videos of anti-maskers showing up at school board meeting defending leaving children vulnerable.

And of course you would think that elected officials would have enough smarts to understand the very basic, very straight forward science of masking especially for those who cannot be vaccinated.

Why do they do this? I have a couple of possible reasons:

First is the pure political answer. In a country where jobs and the state of the economy is one of the major factors in elections, Republicans appear to be doing all they can to crash the economy before the next election in 2022. We all remember what happened last year to the economy when the Covid cases sky rocketed in March. The economy crashed and never recovered.  Republicans seem to believe that a massive spike again could crash the economy again and will still be underperforming next November and will be blamed on Democrats.

One major difference is that this year the Covid is preventable at least currently by vaccine and vaxxing. If those measures are refused then the blame is pretty obviously those who refuse to follow directives.

The second reason is that major corporations and lobbyists who often tell certain politicians how to vote and what to do have invested a lot of money have a vested interest in a pandemic. Hard to believe, but the almighty buck speaks loudly. One need only look at Florida’s governor Ron DeSantis who appears to be droving money to a backer who is heavily invested in stock of the maker of Regeneron.  In this case, DeSantis is almost blatant about it.

A third reason is to use the disruption on public schools to continue their destruction of the public school system with the attendant rise and public funding of privatized schools. This has been a GOP strategy in many areas, such as the privatized prison system.

A fourth reason is to acquire power for their office that destroys current systems of local control. We already see this in effect in many of the anti-masking states.

Finally, the least likely but most proffered reason is a concern about individual freedom. Oddly this is the reason that is trumpeted loudly by the followers of the anti-mask movement as they themselves are having their own kids forced into virus filled classroom environments. Oh, By the way, most of the leadership such as DeSantis send their kids to private schools.

I hope some top notch lawyers are digging into malfeasance in office for lawsuits to come when our children start dying because of the insane decision to force kids into virus filled environments.

Sunday Funday: Back To School Edition

Wish this were a normal back to school situation. Many parents know that their kids are being set up for a probable brush with the Covid virus. Maybe one of the best things that the kids will learn this year is to believe in peer reviewed science and skepticism. Especially skepticism about why gods allow such suffering and why our leaders are often so incapable.

Good luck kids, especially the unable to be vaccinated under 12 set.
