Sunday Funday: Happy Birthday (Hopefully) Madam President Edition

The Veep helps some lost folks Thursday (1:33)

I may be a little presumptuous, but since the Vice President handed Bret Baier his proverbial ass on national TV Wednesday, I feel that Kamala Harris will usher the United States into the 21st century as the USA joins the rest of the modern world in finally having a female leader. Happy Birthday Madam President.

With any luck in a couple of weeks we will be hearing the Harris name frequently while hearing very little of her opponent ever again.

So we will see if we can scare up (get it? Halloween) a few questions on the future president.

A) Yahya Sinwar was killed was killed in action during the current war in the Middle East Wednesday. Sinwar was the leader of which group in this war?

B) Shake your booty! Which presidential candidate stopped a campaign rally to have a little music and dance in a bizarre event Tuesday?

C) What two candidates for Iowa’s second district congressional seat met in a debate last week on IPTV?

D) Which two candidates for the first district congressional seat will end the debate season tomorrow night on IPTV?

E) When elected, Harris will tie for the shortest president in history. With whom will she be tied as shortest?

F) What political stars will be joining VP Harris on the campaign trail next week?

G) What major pharmacy chain announced it will be closing 1200 stores over the next three years?

H) Lilly Ledbetter died last week. Ledbetter became famous when she filed suit against her employer on what basis?

I) The Catholic Diocese of Los Angeles settled a suit for priestly child abuse for $880,000,000 bringing their total settlements for this abuse to what?

J) How many siblings does VP Harris have?

K) NASA is at it again. They launched a mission to what body in our solar system last Monday?

L) The mission in the above question is 1.8 billion miles from earth. When is the mission expected to reach its target (date or length of time)?

M) Thanks to disinformation and flat out lies, what governmental agency is having to move people working in the North Carolina and Tennessee to save their lives?

N) Data on incoming kindergartners shows vaccination rates at only 92%. What percentage is needed to reach community immunity?

O) What snack food is the Vice President known to like the most?

P) “Exhausted” is the most recent reason given by the candidate Trump campaign for doing what?

Q) The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) finalized a rule Wednesday that will make businesses make it as easy to do what as it is to subscribe to a service?

R) 70 years ago last Friday (October 18, 1954) Texas Instruments announced the what product that would be among the first consumer electronics?

S) Vice President Harris is well known for wearing what kind of shoes for comfort?

T) Friday we had the release of over 2000 pages of evidence on Candidate Trump’s election interference case supplied to Judge Chutkin’s court by what special prosecutor?

1) Trump elected.   2) Vance invokes 25th Amendment.    3) Vance is President, Johnson is VP.    4) Project2025 implemented.   5) Hello Gilead.  Meacham

Answers:

A) Hamas

B) Candidate Trump (what’s going on with him?)

Ethel Kennedy was there as soon as I entered political office in 1972 when I lost my family in an automobile accident. And she was there for me 50 years later when I was elected president.

She was a hero in her own right.

May she be reunited with the blessed pieces of her soul. – President Biden

A Reminder: Medicare Advantage Is Private Insurance

MASSIVE: Hospitals Are DROPPING Medicare Advantage Plans (32 minutes)

NOTE: information on switching back starts at 28 minutes.

The open enrollment period is upon us. Once again we are seeing grizzly wise old dudes and spritely looking older ladies singing the praises of Medicare Advantage. Once more we must remind you that MA is private insurance. It is not Medicare and the only Advantage is to the insurance companies.

I was reminded of all this yet again when I ran across an article discussing how the insurers were reassessing their markets to maximize their profits. Just like property insurance companies are fleeing Florida as the effects of the climate catastrophe magnifies its effects on that state, so are MA insurers doing what they can to avoid claims and maximize profits.

Do you get it? MA is not for the insured, it is profit driven companies for the stock holders. They will do whatever they must to maximize profits and minimize losses. The insured are not part of the equation. We recently did an article on this same thing only a few weeks ago when a large company decided to abandon an area of Minnesota MA coverage due to a rise in claims in that state.

As another story came along revealing a larger national roll back and since this is within the sign up period I thought this would be a good time for another reminder. Since this is also election season, it is also a reminder that Republicans – now MAGAs – create situations that they sell as forward looking when their programs often have very poison pills for regular people while moving huge money and advantages to the already wealthy and well off.

The recent move to privatizing education in Iowa is a similar situation. While on the surface it looks like a chance for students and parents to find better schools, the underlying effects are to pay tuition for rich and wealthy parents while undermining and destroying our public school system.

Counterpunch published an article reminding us what is at stake as insurance companies spend millions and millions to finagle aging Americans to sign up for insurance programs that often do not live up to their billing.

October 15 marks the first day of open enrollment in Medicare Advantage (MA) plans – a time that will deliver chaos and confusion for many of the 34 million seniors who depend on these plans to pay their healthcare bills. It’s yet another reminder that Medicare wastes billions of dollars funneling public money to private companies that are primarily driven by profit-seeking.

Last year, more MA members than expected used their benefits to get necessary medical care. One might assume that companies would expect beneficiaries to use health care services. But after years of making outsized profits, the insurance companies that own these plans are reacting to this by downsizing plans, cutting benefits, increasing copays, and raising prescription drug deductibles. In other words, Medicare Advantage beneficiaries are being penalized for using the health care that they pay for.

Insurers are Dropping Plans and Slashing Benefits

Having spent decades luring enrollees and collecting premiums, two of the biggest health insurers in the MA marketplace, CVS and Humana, are scaling back, slashing benefits, and canceling plans with too many members who used their health benefits. They are closing less profitable health plans that serve half a million or more seniors, forcing them to sign up for other more expensive or less generous coverage. Humana is set to leave 13 markets around the country, affecting 560,000 beneficiaries or 10 percent of its plan members. The reason for exiting? The CFO herself, Susan Diamond, said the specific markets just aren’t profitable. CVS Chief Financial Officer Tom Cowhey sent a similar message at a conference last month: “Could we lose up to 10 percent of our existing Medicare members next year? That’s entirely possible. And that’s okay because we need to get this business back on track.”

Medicare Advantage plans are being impacted all over the country. In Vermont, MVP and WellCare are dropping two MA plans in January 2025. This will affect 6,000 older Vermonters who will need to quickly choose new plans in the upcoming enrollment period. The MA plans cited spiking health care costs and lower Medicare reimbursements. WellCare, which is run by Centene Corp, pulled out of Alabama, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Mexico, and Rhode Island in addition to Vermont, leaving 40,000 people and 4 percent of MA beneficiaries without continued coverage past the enrollment period. In New Hampshire, multiple MA plans are shutting down, leaving tens of thousands beneficiaries scrambling. In Minnesota, nearly 60,000 people will face disruptions to their MA plans.

Health systems and hospitals are also making the decision to cancel contracts due to excessive prior authorization denial rates and slow payments from insurers. Already 27 health systems have canceled their Medicare Advantage contracts this year. MA plans can be especially harmful to rural providers who already face financial hurdles, and may further struggle to continue providing care to their communities due to unreliable and low reimbursements from insurers.

Harris Wallops Gish Galloping Baier

hat tip to Mike Lukovich

For maybe the second time in my life we purposely turned on Fox News Wednesday. I had just heard on the radio that VP Harris would be interviewed on Fox by Bret Baier in a few minutes. So I went inside, told my wife we should see how this goes. The Vice-President was stepping courageously into the vipers nest. This is something that her opponent is very scared to do to the point that he cancels interviews with only moments before the interview.

So a few moments into his daily show, Baier began his “interview.” From the outset it was very clear that Baier was planning more of a blind-sided attack on Kamala Harris than anything like an interview. I almost turned it off immediately but decided to see if Harris would drop her calm and pleasant demeanor and respond accordingly.

As Baier attacked and attacked with false premises, Harris moved into her prosecutor’s mode. She then proceeded to rip Baier to shreds. Baier was ready and well prepared to do all he could to embarrass what he saw as his opponent. Harris was more than up to the task as she called Baier out on his lies, and stopped his attempt to Gish Gallop over her answers.

The Vice-President almost could not have asked for a better set up to show how she was prepared for the real world of being president when tough decisions and tough actions were needed. The segment ended much earlier than planned as Baier pleaded with his producer to put on a commercial and stop the carnage. It was comical to see Baier begging to get out of the ring.

I tried to find just a straight video of the encounter but the only ones anywhere near that were posted by Fox. Knowing their reputation for propaganda, I chose a video of the Morning Joe Show. While I know MSNBC also has a reputation, they also deal in the real world, whereas Fox definitely does not.

So here is Mika Brzezinski’s thoughts on Baier’s encounter with a very tough, very smart Vice President. I would like to note that at about the 11:30 mark, Mika introduces the clip where Harris calls out Baier for his misleading, doctored clip of Trump responding to his own (Trump’s) call to turn soldiers on the American people. Baier never recovers from Harris’s response: (15 minutes)

In case that phrase “enemy within” doesn’t send an absolute shiver up your spine, listen closely to Harris’s very on point response. “The enemy within” is me, it is also probably you, and it is anyone that displeases them in some way. It is pure fascist speak.

Those who are supporting. Trump, be very aware of what you are asking for. A Trump presidency will come back to haunt you. The chaos and destruction that you wish for your enemies will visit you also. Once unleashed it will be nearly impossible to corral.

Democrat Phil Wiese Takes On MAGA Republican Bobby Kaufmann In Iowa HD82

Phil Wiese is running to unseat Bobby Kaufmann, son of Iowa GOP chair Jeff Kaufmann,  in HD82.  Phil wants to “bring dignity and respect back to politics in Iowa.” We could sure use some of that.

Iowa Gun Safety Coalition Releases Voter Guide For The November Election

From our inbox: Remember sharing is caring!

Iowa Gun Safety Coalition is an informal coalition of many organizations across the state of Iowa whose interests include legislation that will prevent or reduce gun violence.

We’ve been busy!  Just a couple of weeks til Election Day. This letter includes three important topics: the release of our Voter Guide, a quick summary of our (unsuccessful) efforts to stop the Guns in Schools Bill, and how you can still help with these two efforts.

1. Voter Guide

The Coalition, working with Iowans for Gun Safety, the statewide not-for-profit organization seeking common sense solutions to gun violence, announces the availability of its November 2024 Gun Violence Prevention Voter Guide. The Voter Guide is available right now on the organization’s website at: https://iowansforgunsafety.org/voterguide2024/

Voters using the guide will be able to learn the basics about key firearms-related legislative voting records (for incumbents) and NRA grades and Moms Demand Action “Gun Sense Distinction’ awards for many of the Iowa legislative candidates in their Iowa Senate and House districts. All Senate seats of even-numbered districts and all House seats are on the ballot.

Iowa Gun Safety Coalition operates on the principle that informed voters will want to seek out candidates who are interested in stopping the public health epidemic of gun violence.

Art Roche, chair of Iowans for Gun Safety, stated:

“Reduction of gun violence is one of the issues that we want voters to consider in this election. In the last four years, some legislation was enacted into Iowa law that makes it more difficult to enact or enforce gun violence prevention laws (the gun amendment) and just this year, a law allowing teachers to carry guns in the classroom. We don’t tell people how to vote, but in our Voter Guide we do tell people how incumbent candidates voted on those key votes, which candidates are graded A and A+ by the world’s largest gun manufacturing lobby, and which are applauded as exemplary by Moms Demand Action. Then people can consider this information as they weigh their options on the ballot.”

2. Guns in Schools

You’re probably aware that HF 2586, the Iowa bill to allow teachers to carry guns in classrooms, passed both houses in totally partisan votes and was signed into law this summer by Governor Kim Reynolds. We organized a coalition of many organizations with missions that included gun violence prevention which addressed the arming of teachers and also helped inform the 2024 Voters Guide. Once the law was passed, we were also involved in commenting on the haphazard regulations that were drafted to actually implement the law, and some of those comments were taken to heart.

We sent letters to each of the 333 school district superintendents in Iowa, and to each of their corresponding school boards. Here’s a copy of that letter:

August 2024

Dear School Board President,

Iowans for Gun Safety, a nonprofit organization, leads a statewide coalition of organizations (listed below) that view gun violence as a public health crisis. It is from this perspective we are writing to you about a new Iowa law that will significantly affect every student, parent, school board, administrator and school employee in the state. During the 2024 session, the Iowa legislature passed, and the Governor signed into law, House File 2586, the Guns in Schools bill. Among other things, the new law —

  • Authorizes school employees to carry firearms on school property
  • Offers qualified immunity to school employees and school boards from civil or criminal litigation
  • Blocks school boards from making public the names of school employees who have permits to carry guns on school premises

Iowans for Gun Safety and our coalition partners oppose this legislation for many reasons. We are convinced guns in schools will make students, teachers and staff less safe. A robust body of public health research strongly suggests armed teachers would not effectively deter gun violence. We are not alone in our opinion. A Giffords Law Center report from April 2023 found 70% of teens and parents and 80% of teachers who responded to their survey think arming teachers is a bad idea. The new law raises many questions that school boards and administrators must address:

  • If employees receive a permit to carry a gun on campus, where will the firearms be stored? Who will have access to the gun cabinet or storage container? If the firearms are locked away for safety, who will be authorized to unlock the storage container and under what circumstances?
  • Will teachers with gun permits keep their guns in the classroom? Where?
  • If a school district allows employees to keep firearms in classrooms, what is the process to be followed if parents object to their children being in classrooms containing guns?
  • Will parents know whether their children’s teachers have guns in the classroom? The law states the names of employees with permits to carry firearms on campus are confidential.
  • Will employees with permits be allowed to carry weapons at school events?
  • Will your school district’s insurance company continue your coverage given the “qualified immunity” language of the law?
  • Will school board members and school administrators even know whether employees have acquired permits that allow them to carry firearms on school grounds?

We urge you to carefully consider the new law and its implications for your school district. We will closely follow decisions made by school boards regarding this law. If your board has discussions about this new law or about gun violence in schools in general, we would welcome your comments and information about your planned course of action.

Sncerely,

Art Roche, Chair, Iowans for Gun Safety

Iowa Gun Safety Coalition: Iowans for Gun Safety, Franciscan Peace Center, Clinton, IA March for Our Lives Iowa, Northeast Iowa Peace and Justice Center, Decorah, IA Iowa, Methodist Federation for Social Action, The Campaign to Keep Guns Off Campus, The Iowa Chapter of Brady United Against Gun Violence, Iowa Unitarian Universalist Witness, Iowa United Women in Faith, Dubuque Coalition for Nonviolence (CNV), Amnesty International Iowa, Interfaith Alliance of Iowa, American Association of University Women-Iowa, Iowa United Methodist Conference Board of Church & Society, Retired Clergy serving Des Moines Burns United Methodist Church, League of Women Voters of Iowa, Plymouth Peace and Justice Committee, League of Women Voters of Dubuque, Women’s International League of Peace & Freedom

(UPDATE) So far, we are not aware of any school districts that have adopted the provisions of the law to allow their teachers to carry firearms in schools.

3. What You Can Do

First, please disseminate our Voter Guide today! (Early voting starts on October 16, so there’s little time to spare.) Include the link to our Voter Guide in your communications such as emails and Facebook posts:  https://iowansforgunsafety.org/voterguide2024/

Second, if you are aware of any action your local school board has taken on arming teachers, please let me know.

You can support our work here: Join – Iowans for Gun Safety.

But more importantly, stay safe and vote wisely

Thanks!

Melton Says Feenstra Not Doing Enough For Iowans

Iowa’s News Now Statehouse Reporter Skylar Tallal sat down with Democratic candidate Ryan Melton who is running in Iowa’s 4th Congressional District. He wants to address eminent domain for carbon capture pipelines and breaks down why he believes his Republican opponent isn’t doing enough for Iowans. – Iowa’s News Now

What a breath of fresh air it was to watch a democrat be interviewed by someone in the Iowa press who asked questions in a neutral manner, without republican favoritism and snide digs. But enough about that.

Today is the first day of early voting. If you live in IA-04 run don’t walk to your county auditor’s office and cast your vote for Ryan Melton. Watch his answers on this video and you will see that he is a smart, thoughtful person who cares about Iowa and cares about democracy. He has a full time job and doesn’t take corporate PAC money.  He is working hard to defeat the do-nothing MAGA republican Randy Feenstra.  He thinks about issues in a non-partisan way and would be a great fit for IA-04.

Melton must be doing okay because Feenstra refused to appear with him on Iowa Press for a debate.

“I feel optimistic that, at minimum, we’re going to put a big dent in the status quo,, where a Democrat hasn’t won a congressional election out here in 40 years.” – Ryan Melton

Are Some County Supervisors Representing Summit Over Iowans?

Robert Leonard interviewed three Iowans who have been speaking up about the Summit CO2 pipeline on track to be built across Iowa.  Their personal accounts reveal shocking information as they describe their efforts to have meaningful conversations with their county elected officials. They share their stories of local foot-dragging, and sound the alarm about the dangers the pipeline poses to the public.

” The CO2 cloud that’s going to come from a rupture is heavier than air, it’s an asphyxiant and it suffocates people. It suffocates animals. My family has, they live in the Dead Zone with this Pipeline and proximity to their home. They have five minutes to take shelter in their home before this cloud could overtake them. So people are people are going to die. It’s going to happen, and we’re just calling for action from our our people at the county level who could do things to protect us that refuse to to move ahead.” – Julie Glade, Wright county, Iowa

Watch JFAN Annual Meeting Leaving CAFOs Behind

From Jefferson County Farmers & Neighbors (JFAN) :

Two different farming families share what it took to transform their CAFOs into two, completely different independent, sustainable farming operations.

Tim, Deleana and Curt Roseland, owners of the Roseland Family Farm discussed how and why they retrofitted three CAFO buildings and built a series of hoop houses to raise hogs for Niman Ranch. Tanner Faaborg, founder and manager of 1100 Farm talks about how he converted his family’s former 2200-head CAFO growing hogs for Iowa Select into a specialty mushroom farm.

Ron Mardesen, Niman Ranch farmer, mentor and spokesperson, shares the findings of a 2019 Iowa State University report on how much Niman Ranch’s independent livestock producers contribute to Iowa’s economy.

Kara Shannon, Director of Farm Animal Welfare Policy at the ASPCA, gives a brief overview and status report of the Ending Agricultural Trade Suppression (EATS) Act being negotiated in the Farm Bill that could hurt farmers like the Roselands and Mardesen.

A Little Mathematics: The Electoral College

Here is a little video that sent a Halloween sized scare through my bones. The question it answers is “What is the lowest popular vote total that a person could amass and still win the presidency?” The answer rather amazed me. This really emphasizes why it is imperative that the electoral college be scrapped, the sooner the better.

6.5 minutes: (note – this video is 12 years old and therefore missed the worst loser wins election in 2016.)

Didn’t that get your attention? Just think, in a two party race the loser could get as much as 78% and LOSE! Remember that Republicans have won only one popular vote for president since 1992 (Bush in 2004) and probably would not have won that had he not been the incumbent. They have lost 7 of the last 8 and probably would have lost that one had they not had the incumbent.

Now think of the policies that George W and DonOLD Trump have enacted, appointments they’ve made and the propaganda distortions and fantasy worlds they have created in their times in office. Bribes – such as that seemingly taken by Jared Kushner from the Saudis and the $10 million to Trump from Egypt, thefts of state secrets, an outright physical attack on our government led by Trump, illegal attempts to undermine our election system and change vote totals, appointments of extremist SCOTUS judges and judges throughout the system. The list goes on forever.

That should make a normal person desire removing the antiquated, distorted system that the Founders left us. Yes, they did make some mistakes. That is why there is a system – albeit a very cumbersome system – for correcting mistakes.

Sunday Funday:  Indigenous Peoples Day Edition

the Lighthouse by Stevie Nicks (5 minutes) – pretty self-explanatory:

At a time when we need more truth and less fiction in our politics, along comes Indigenous People’s Day to take the place of the very mythicized Columbus Day. Columbus was mythicized for “discovering” America. Pretty hard to “discover” something where people had been living for millennia and had thriving cultures.

Rather than discovering” America, as we peel back the myths we find Columbus was a pretty bad colonizing dude. Now after the colonizers pretty well decimated Native Americans we have a day to remember that they were actually here first and they deserve some recognition.

As for last week, we’ll guess who has been accused of more criming putting dictators way above the American people. Think about it – it may be today’s first question.

Anticipating crisp fall weather here. So let’s go!

A) Talking to a foreign dictator, giving a covid testing apparatus to that dictator and stopping the FBI investigation into Brett Kavanaugh. Who done it?

B) What matriarch of one of America’s top political families died Thursday at age 96?

C) Brenna Bird in the news again. This time she has Iowa joining a lawsuit against the federal government that would raise staffing in what industry?

D) Indigenous People’s Day? Is it recognized as a holiday in Iowa?

E) The one-two punch of hurricanes hitting Florida finished Thursday. What were the names of the two hurricanes that hit Florida?

F) What wacky Georgia politician added the claim that Democrats control the weather to her previous claim that Jewish Space Lasers were used to start forest fires a couple of years back?

G) What governor of Florida avoided taking calls from either the President or Vice-President while claiming they were not contacting him?

H) As Indigenous People’s Day gets recognition the month long recognition of what group ends tomorrow?

I) Which two Iowa congress members were corrected last week for their part in spreading the lies that FEMA was not immediately on job following the hurricanes in the southeast US?

J) Who verified that citizen Trump was in private phone conversations with Russian dictator Vladimir Putin while Trump denied it happened?

K) What state first changed their Columbus Day holiday to Native American’s Day in 1990?

L) A legislator in West Virginia introduced a bill in the legislature saying that the election in WV would only be considered legal if what happened?

M) After refusing to appear on an interview with 60 minutes that aired last Monday, candidate Trump capped the week by refusing to appear in what format?

N) The cost of living adjustment (COLA) for Social Security for 2025 was announced the other day to be what percentage raise?

O) Kamala Harris ran a media gamut this week including the View, Call Her Daddy and an interview with what self proclaimed ‘King of Media’ on SiriusXM radio?

P) Harris also had a beer with what late night TV show host?

Q) The Biden Administration announced $2.6 B to replace what health hazard in the US as part of an EPA rule?

R) What major fast-food chains sued four beef suppliers claiming the beef suppliers colluded to set prices on beef?

S) it is All Hands On Deck for Democrats as what former leaders will be out campaigning for Harris starting last week?

T) VP Harris proposed adding what care to Medicare last week?

Hillary Clinton: “Remember back in 2016, when Trump asked, what do you have to lose? Well now we know: Our healthcare, our jobs, our loved ones.”

Answers:

A) Candidate Trump

B) Ethel Kennedy

C) Nursing Homes. Care in Iowa is among the worst in the country and that seems to be fine with her and reynolds

D) Yes – since 2018

E) Helene and Milton

H) Hispanic Heritage month

I) Hinson and Miller-Meeks

J) The Kremlin
