Carlin Told Us What Was Coming Years Ago

In this clip, George Carlin pretty well sums up what was happening to Americans at the time (2006). Unfortunately, America stepped into a much worse situation in November (about 4 minutes):

With the election of the vulture known as Donald Trump there is no longer any pretense that Republicans run the government at the behest of the rich. The Republican congress is in the process of taking away most everything that labor and progressives have fought for since the Roosevelt Administration – the Teddy Roosevelt Administration!

And they have to work fast because at sometime, despite the cover from the corporate media, Americans will wake up and realize they are being robbed blind.

Right now they are working on killing Dodd-Franks – the lone firewall between a sane financial system and the rampant casino that spun out of control under George W. Bush just a decade back.

But that isn’t all. Mining regulations are going or gone. Workplace safety rules are being relaxed. Public education is on the chopping block to be replaced by a system of corporate or church schools with little public oversight.

Of course there are the threats of making access to health care prohibitive to the sick and poor. To do this the rich through their representatives the Republicans will repeal the ACA including most of Medicaid. This will be a major kick in the crotch to the poor and middle aged. Then after some sanctimonious utterances, they will go after Medicare with a vengeance. Tough, old folks!

After taking money for health care for the old and poor to fund huge tax cuts for the wealthy, look for them to go after the BIG prize – Social Security! Boy won’t their buddies on Wall Street have fun gambling with your retirement money! PARTEEE!

But all is not doom and gloom. Cracks are appearing in the downward plunge of the American lifestyle. As reported here last week, California is taking early steps in establishing a state single payer health care system.

There is also good news from states not as progressive as California.
The Nevada legislature last week approved a bill that would allow those without health insurance to buy into the Medicaid system. This is approach is sort of a twist on the Medicare buy in that some have offered as an alternative. Vox.com has a discussion of some of the pros and cons of the idea. Right now the decision rests on the pen of Nevada’s Republican governor Brian Sandoval.

Another really surprising crack in the wall of Republican solidarity showed up this week in Kansas. As many of you may recall Kansas has been hard hit by a disaster named Gov. Sam Brownback. Brownback’s extreme right wing trickle down, cut all taxes policies have left the state government a financial shambles. Iowa appears to be poised to follow Kansas down this rabbit hole.

At long last the heavily Republican state legislature in Kansas has had enough of the closed schools and other services not performed. Earlier this week they overrode a Brownback veto in order to raise taxes. Brownback had made Kansas into the nation’s “tax cuts bring prosperity” laboratory and it failed miserably. Iowa’s version seems to be off to a quite bumpy start.

We have a friend who always wonders how much Americans will have to lose before they finally rise up. Based on the cracks showing up around the country plus the amount of pressure that the public is putting on Congress concerning health care it looks like the sleeping giant is waking up and is mad as hell.

Sorry we are a bit late in posting this. Somebody named Trump seems to be sucking all the attention these days.

June is LGBTQ Pride month.
This month of celebration, visibility, and community commemorates the Stonewall Riots. AMES, IOWA — Larry Cohen, former President of the Communication Workers of America and Labor Chair of Our Revolution will keynote the second Iowa Working Families Summit, which will take place on Saturday, June 10th in Ames, Iowa. The theme of this year’s summit is ‘Standing Together. Fighting Back’ and attendees will hear from everyday Iowans, learn from policy and advocacy experts, and be provided a number of opportunities to take action from the dozens of co-sponsoring organizations planning the Working Families Summit.

“The Working Families Summit is about bringing everyday Iowans together,” said Ken Sagar, President of the Iowa Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO. “Working families in our state are struggling to get by, and we need to find new ways ways to bring this country back to those that make it work.”

Additional Details:

WHO: Hundreds of Iowans Attending!

WHAT: Iowa Working Families Summit

WHEN: Saturday, June 10th, 9:00 AM – 5:00 PM

WHERE:
Scheman Bldg, 1805 Center Dr #102, Ames, IA 50011

A sold out crowd of nearly 500 attended the first-ever Iowa Working Families Summit in 2015, when former Labor Secretary Robert Reich delivered the keynote address. Organizers expect a similarly large crowd this year, and registration is required.

editor’s comment:
In a time when Republicans ostensibly lay claim to family values while cutting wages, taking health care from millions, crushing wages, enacting anti-women policies and giving huge tax breaks to the rich this summit will take on the issues that real families face daily. Check the link to see if registrations are still being accepted.

Health Care Should Be A Human Right

by Ralph Scharnau

The human right to health care means that everyone gets the highest standard of care for physical and mental health. Individuals should receive this care regardless of age, disability, gender, sexual identification, geographical location, urban/suburban/rural domicile, political persuasion, religion/non-religion, workplace status, union affiliation, and income level. Adopting such a health care system in the United States would require eliminating present disparities and discriminations.

Health care ought to be free to all, no exceptions. It should be timely, acceptable, and appropriate. It relates as well to providing all medical services, sanitation, adequate food, affordable and decent housing, healthy working conditions, and a clean and sustainable environment. In short, universal health care can be conceived of as a human right and economic justice issue

According to recent polls, a majority of Americans now say that the federal government should be responsible for providing everyone with health care coverage. The January Pew Research polling puts that percentage at 60.

Medicare, for example, has been providing efficient health care for fifty years. It already operates more efficiently than private health plans. And Medicare spends only about two percent of its costs on overhead contrasted with private costs at about seven percent. Medicare also receives higher satisfaction ratings than private plans.

The other publicly-funded health care program, Medicaid, today provides assistance to one in five Americans. It provides assistance to four out of ten American children. It helps cover the costs of nearly half of all births, nearly two-thirds of nursing home residents, and 10 million children and adults with mental and physical disabilities. Many people know someone covered by Medicaid. For states, Medicaid accounts for 60 percent of federal funding

Despite the reach and importance of Medicare and Medicaid, the GOP congressional leadership and the Trump administration seem determined to end government-run health care and establish a private “free market” system based on profit taking. GOP proposals to privatize Medicare and to block-grant Medicaid will take resources away from working and poor families. And health care will loom large in the upcoming showdowns over the federal budget and taxes, where food, housing, and other public assistance health programs (like Medicare, Medicaid, and Children’s Health Insurance) will also be at stake.

Without even conducting any public hearings, the Republican-dominated House of Representatives recently rushed through to passage a health care bill. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates that under this Republican health-care plan 14 million people will lose coverage in the first year and 24 million by 2026, leaving a stunning 52 million Americans uninsured. Older Americans would face rising costs with fewer subsidies, and millions would be tossed off Medicaid.

Since 2009, each session of Congress has witnessed a Democratic-sponsored bill named the United States National Health Care Act. The objective of the proposed legislation is to create a publicly funded agency dedicated to managing our national health insurance, free of the influence of U.S. politicians and 50 sets of state lawmakers. Such a federal agency would seek to offer health care based on universality, morality, and fairness.

This new health care system should ensure that the most ill and vulnerable men, women, and children in the U.S. have access to adequate health care. Compared to other industrialized countries, our health care system is costlier, more inefficient, and less fair. The time has certainly arrived to fix our broken health care system, replacing it with one that is simpler to understand, covers everyone, saves lives, and would cut our health care costs in half.

Ralph Scharnau

Exiting Paris – Not The End Of The World

Earth-DSCOVR-20150706-IFV-1024x1006

Image of Earth 7-6-15 from DSCOVR (Deep Space Climate Observatory)

We survived U.S. failure to ratify the Kyoto Protocol to limit greenhouse gas emissions and will survive if Republicans drag us out of the Paris Agreement after the 2020 general election, as was announced June 1 in Washington, D.C.

Make no mistake: it is a disappointment that Republicans plan to exit the agreement.

Outside the symbolism for their political party — which I can only characterize as a finger-involved and not-safe-for-work gesture to the rest of the world — the engine driving greenhouse gas reductions is picking up velocity and will not be stopped by any one person or group.

The United States is not the only country on Earth. 194 countries remain in the agreement as the U.S. joins Syria and Nicaragua as the only states outside it. China, India and the European Union have said they will step up to fill the leadership void the U.S. created by its announcement.

Here’s the bottom line: even without the federal government involved, cities, states, businesses, colleges, and citizens across the US are driving a shift to clean energy and bringing down emissions. Just like the Paris Agreement intended.

With Republicans stepping back, it’s up to the rest of us to step up in a big way and keep this momentum going if we want to protect our environment.

Earth is our only home. Consumerism, irresponsible development, environmental degradation and global warming have negatively impacted where we live.

Our work goes on. The Republican decision to exit the Paris Agreement is not the end of the world. Not even close.

California Looking At Single Payer

Image (1) medicare-for-all.jpg for post 20634

Way back in my youth there was a saying that California will be ten years ahead of the rest of the country. That has held to be somewhat true from the ‘50s to know.

In the long arc we have seen California as the harbinger of the takeover of radical right government in the late 60s (with Reagan) which eventually showed up in the early 80s (also with Reagan). We then saw California go through a huge tax cutting era that nearly bankrupted the state. Iowa is among many states following that script as is the national government.

We then saw California pass rules for the legislature that placed any governing into the hands of a small radical right minority. About a decade ago, we saw Californians throw off the yoke of of the radical right oligarchs, raise taxes and once more right their ship to at least once more start sailing in the right direction.

So it is with great interest that observers are once more casting their eyes to California to peer into the nations future. Looks like California is digging into offering some form of universal health care in their state. As many Republicans like to say, the states are the laboratories of democracy. This looks like an experiment whose time has come and will be a boon to most Californians that will also point the way to implementing in other states.

Of course there are entrenched interests with deep, deep pocketbooks that will be opposing any move that will cost them money. So this will also be the laboratory where the strategies for and against will be pitted against each other.

Here is a snippet of the story from Jacobin magazine:

After the implementation of single payer, the report says, health expenditures in the state of California would total $400 billion per year, or 15 percent of the state’s GDP. This is three percentage points lower than the share of GDP the United States overall spends on health care.

The reports indicate that, currently, government spending on health care in California is around $200 billion and employer spending on health care is between $100 billion and $150 billion. There is no indication of how much individuals currently spend on top of employers and governments on individual premiums and out-of-pocket expenses.

Nonetheless, net of current government spending ($200 billion) and employer spending ($100-$150 billion), the single-payer plan requires an additional $50 to $100 billion of spending, or 1.9% to 3.8% of CA GDP.

For that extra 1.9% to 3.8% of GDP:

The state would pay for almost all of its residents’ medical expenses — inpatient, outpatient, emergency services, dental, vision, mental health, and nursing home care — under the plan, and Californians would not have any premiums, copays, or deductibles.

That’s an incredible deal for just 15% of GDP, which again is lower than the United States as a whole already spends on health care.

Wouldn’t that be wonderful in Iowa? Imagine waking up one day and seeing a headline on your screen that there would be a good chance that in exchange for a raise in taxes, you could be done with insurance payments, deductibles, co-pays and the ever hateful pre-existing conditions. In addition to medical care you would also get vision and dental insurance AND nursing home care.

This instead of the headlines we see now such as this one from iowastartingline.com the other day:

WILL IOWA REPUBLICANS PUSH DRUG TESTING FOR MEDICAID RECIPIENTS NEXT?

If it is a true single payer plan in California, that would eliminate the need for medicaid, medicare, medical in your car insurance, I believe workman’s comp would also be greatly curtailed. No separate vision insurance, dental insurance, long term care or drug insurance.

Sunday Funday: Wonder Woman Weekend Edition

Image (1) hillary-clinton-acceptance-speech-300x169.jpg for post 34392

What could have been

Many of us thought we would see Wonder Woman somewhere around the 20th of January. We needed her badly then and now our need is even greater.

At this point in her administration, Republicans would have had a dozen impeachment bills drawn up, but America would be having a love affair with their new President.

In the real world the loser who was inserted into the White House continues a path of destruction unmatched in our history on both the international and domestic fronts:

Internationally he has begun the destruction of the European Union, NATO and the Paris Climate Agreement. Vladimir Putin approves these actions.

Domestically he continues to careen like a bull on the tax cuts for the rich. This will include destroying Medicaid, parts of Medicare, Meals on Wheels, SNAP, the ACA, the environment, public education and voting rights among others. But he is getting behind such outdated ideas such as coal, oil and racism.

America needs Wonder Woman

Getting harder and harder to pay attention – they are wearing me down.

1) The current president moved to pull the US out of the Paris Climate Accords. What other countries will the US join that are not part of the Accord?

2) The attacks on the press became literal last Sunday morning when a newspaper in what city had its windows shot out?

3) During his address on climate change, the current president said he was elected to represent which city, while the mayor of that city responded that he (the current president) hadn’t been?

4) Lebanon is seeking to ban showings of “Wonder Woman” in their country. Why?

5) Even though he blew a 0.0% on the breathalyzer what noted golfer was arrested for DUI in Florida last week?

6) Sticking with sports, what basketball icon had a racial slur sprayed on the front gate of his home in Los Angeles Wednesday?

7) What Iowa labor leader joined the crowded Democratic gubernatorial race last week?

8) Oh boy! What became legal to sell in Iowa as of last Thursday?

9) “Operation Overlord” was the code name for what historic military operation?

10) In a historic ruling on June 7th, 1965 in Griswold v. Connecticut, the Supreme Court struck down laws banning what practice associated with sex?

11) Jobs decelerated last month when it was reported Friday that the economy added how many jobs in May?

12) What automobile executive resigned from the current president’s Council of Economic Advisors over the decision to leave the Paris Accords?

13) What three states formed a climate alliance shortly after the US was withdrawn from the Paris Accords?

14) Must see TV next Thursday. Who will be testifying before the Senate Intelligence Committee in open session next Thursday morning?

15) The administration is moving to return what to Russian control after the Obama administration closed them due to espionage activity?

16) Star Wars returns! The US conducted what test Tuesday in response to North Korea’s recent missile tests?

17) Before announcing his decision to withdraw from the Paris Accords, the current president apparently consulted with who on the decision?

18) The administration is working on a draft to reverse the ACA requirement that most employers provide what coverage free within their health insurance?

19) A noose was found in what museum Wednesday causing the museum to be closed for 3 hours to investigate?

20) The current president created diplomatic concerns along with concerns about secrecy and security when he gave what to several world leaders?

You have to love John Fugelsang:
Donald Trump gets to say ‘fuck you’ to science & every living thing on Earth because he ran for president and came in second

Answers:

1) Nicaragua and Syria. Syria is in a civil war and Nicaragua said the Accords didn’t go far enough.

2) Lexington, Kentucky

3) Pittsburgh, Pa.

4) The star – Gal Gadot – is an Israeli

5) Tiger Woods. Apparently he was messed up on prescription pain killers

6) LeBron James

7) Cathy Glasson

8) fireworks. I hope they are a dud

9) D-Day or the invasion of Normandy June 4th, 1944

10) contraception

11) 138,000

12) Elon Musk of Tesla

13) California, Washington and New York

14) James Comey

15) compounds on Long Island and Chesapeake Bay

16) a missile intercept test. It was successful, but diplomacy would be better.

17) Fox News talking head Kimberly Guilfoyle

18) contraception

19) The Smithsonian National Museum of African American History

20) his cell phone number

See you next week
