BS!

Obama on bullies

Found this rant at democraticundergroud.com Thursday during the height of the attempted assassinations of current and former Democratic officials via pipe bombs. One of the most BS memes coming from this incident is that “both sides do it.” Both sides don’t do it. The violence that is spiraling is almost totally on one side and is being encouraged by a out of control president: (reprinted with permission of the writer NanceGreggs)

Bullshit!!!

I’ve been hearing the bullshit all day – the “Trump isn’t responsible” bullshit, the “both sides do it” bullshit, the “let’s not point fingers” bullshit – and it’s time to shut it down.

To those spewing the “both sides are to blame” bullshit, I pose the following:

Name one Democrat who has called Mexicans rapists and drug-dealers, who has labelled people of colour as coming from “shithole countries”, or has tried to ban Muslims from entering the country because they’re terrorists.

Name one Democrat who has called KKK members and white supremacists “very fine people”.

Name one Democrat who has encouraged violence at a political event, with the promise of paying for the legal defence of anyone arrested for engaging in that violence.

Name one Democrat who has actually campaigned on the idea of divisiveness, and has instilled an us versus them mindset in their supporters.

Name one Democrat who has led cries of “lock ‘em up” when referring to their political opponents.

Name one Democrat who has physically assaulted a journalist – and then name one Democratic president who ever praised someone for doing so.

Name one Democratic president who has taunted, insulted, and belittled our nation’s allies.

Name one Democratic president who has not only praised, but embraced our nation’s true enemies – enemies responsible for violence against their own people, and threats against our country.

Name one Democratic president who has referred to his political opponents by demeaning nick-names, has repeatedly stated they have “low IQs” – or went so far as to question their citizenship.

So let’s stop the bullshit. There is no such thing as “both sides do it”, when one side is being continually encouraged to hate those who disagree with them, to hate those who look different than they do, to hate anyone and everyone who their “pResident” tells them to hate.

I’ve heard it said all day that Trump isn’t directly responsible for this act of violence against his political foes. Again, I call bullshit.

Every person who was targeted with a pipe-bomb today is someone who Trump has specifically pointed out as an “enemy” of himself and his followers. He has railed against them repeatedly, and has incited his supporters to see them as enemies as well.

Trump owns all of this. He owns the violence he has incited, and the hatred he has encouraged in order to fuel that violence. He owns every statement, every tweet, every rally cry that has demonized not only his fellow citizens, but the institutions that underpin our democracy – such as our intelligence and law enforcement agencies, and a free press.

To hear Trump continually rant against his “enemies” and then absolve him of any responsibility for those supposed enemies being targeted for violence – or even death – is to be complicit in his hateful rhetoric. It is to turn a blind eye to everything he has said and done that has led up to this day. It is to ignore the obvious – the constant encouragement to perceive political opponents as people deserving of violence and/or death.

I heard NY Governor Andrew Cuomo say today that there is “anger on both sides” – and that’s true. But there is only one side that is stoking that anger with lies, encouraging that anger with hateful rhetoric, and vilifying those they hope that anger will be directed at.

Any pretence that today’s events are not a direct result of the shit Donald Trump has been stirring up is an insult to the intelligence of those who have heard the vitriol, and knew that the consequences were inevitable.

ACLU Scorecard For The Iowa Legislature

Image (1) AAAAAcluofIowa.jpg for post 3737  We received a scorecard in the mail from the ACLU of Iowa rating Iowa’s legislative members’ votes on issues that the ACLU deemed important concerning civil liberties.

Since most of the legislature is running for their respective seats, this scorecard can be used as yet another tool in selecting a candidate to vote for in the coming election.

My family generally agrees with the ACLU positions feeling that guarding our civil liberties is easier than trying to get them restored after they have been rescinded. Getting civil liberties restored is nearly impossible.

So click on the link and take a look at the ACLU’s scorecard and perhaps use this as part of your evaluation.

In my district our current representatives are rated extremely low. That is a situation we hope our votes will help correct. After all, Iowa’s state motto is very clear in how early leaders of the state felt about our civil liberties:

“Our liberties we prize and our rights we will maintain.”

What Iowa Will Stand Up For On Election Day?

IMG_3705

Hubbell and Hart stand for traditional Iowa values

One of the most telling remarks following the 2016 election was what the election said about US citizens. The myth of America is that we are a tolerant people who care about the lesser among us. This would line up with the myth that America is a Christian nation.

Yet in the 2016 election America via the electoral college elevated a man to the presidency who preached racism and hate during the campaign, who has never exhibited even an ounce of empathy for anyone, who openly mocked our legal system and systemically stole from the poor and who exhibited a thorough lack of knowledge of how our government works.

Trump’s working medium is blatant lies. Once this country was proud of how they could ferret out and expose hucksters, now perhaps the greatest huckster of all was elevated to the countries highest office.

Among the myths that our country is based on is that its institutions are stronger than individual leaders. We are finding out that that is not true if leaders, whether they be in the administrative, judicial or legislative branch, simply refuse to follow the laws, regulations and norms that have been established over long periods of time.

Now we are coming up on another national election. The choice is just as plain this time as it was in the last election. Will American cast its votes for what has now become a party of hucksters and blatant liars or will Americans find their roots and go back to what made this country great?

Over the past two years we have seen our country kick its allies in the teeth on the national level while cozying up to its enemies. The least educated amongst us should be able to see this is a losing policy, yet that is our national policy. Meanwhile we turn a hostile face to anyone seeking asylum from terror and famine in their own countries. The separation of children from their families is one of the darkest chapters in America’s history.

On the domestic front, the leader of the senate in Trump’s Party (note: no longer Republicans) has promised to work on ending Social Security and Medicare to pay for the tax cuts to the rich the Trump Party delivered to their donors last December. Doesn’t that feel like you’ve been taken to the cleaners?

This is in addition to tightening policies that cut food to the poor, that make going to college something only the rich can afford and working overtime to end access to health care and the protections on pre-existing conditions.

On the economy they have destroyed as much of the protections as they have been able to that were supposed to keep the financial companies in control. There are many warning signs that another financial meltdown could be triggered easily, but this administration is doing nothing to stop it.

Meanwhile America’s workers are still working for 1970s wages as the gap between the rich and the poor approaches the widest ever in America.

And when did using the wheels of government to punish political enemies become national policy?

Iowa’s Trump Party congress members are a major part of the problem. They are proudly lining up to be in Trump’s favor. For the past two years they have stood by and cheered as Trump has ignored laws in his effort to amass power to the presidency. Where once Iowans would call out their politicians for lying to them, these days we seemingly accept their lies about being in favor of protecting pre-existing conditions when they have voted to kill that protection multiple times.

At the state level we have had a state legislature and governor whose focus has been on destroying unions, cutting education, restricting voting and paying off their donors with huge and unjustified tax cuts rather than keeping the state running. We have seen budgets way out of balance and a promise of more to come as the the Trump Party pays its donors with you tax dollars.

We have a governor who looks at a disastrous Medicaid program meant to take care of the neediest of our citizens and declares it to be working well.

So in 2018 Iowans have a chance to regain their reputations as people who can discern the difference between sincere people who will look out for their concerns versus those who will lie and cheat to get into positions of power. In this election it is as simple as looking for the (D) behind the candidates name.

Please, Iowa, your reputation is on the line.

Prairie Progressive – Withered And Whining

Prairie Dog

Reprinted with permission from the Fall 2018 issue of The Prairie Progressive, Iowa’s oldest progressive newsletter.

Bobby Kaufmann is not a victim. He may be an aggrieved party from time to time, but victim? No.

His latest grievance was expressed in a letter to the editor of multiple House District 73 newspapers as follows:

“I had warned the organizers of all of the debates this cycle that my family was in a serious bind right now. My grandpa is now living in a memory unit and my uncle had emergency triple bypass surgery. This left me to fill a huge void in the family farming operation. Events would have to be missed.”

In the letter Kaufmann focused on the Monday, Sept. 10, Johnson County Task Force on Aging candidate forum. He chose to miss it.

Lyle Muller, executive director of the Iowa Center for Public Affairs Journalism-IowaWatch.org moderated the forum. At the beginning he said the empty seats left for Kaufmann and one other candidate were not a statement of any kind. He hadn’t heard back from them after the invitation and hoped they were running late and would appear before the end of the forum. Neither did.

All Kaufmann had to do was give Muller the courtesy of a phone call or email to say he couldn’t make it to the forum because of family concerns. We all experience those things and I for one would understand. Most reasonable people would. Instead he blew off the forum like a speck of dust after working a field, failing to show common courtesy warranted for a public figure.

It’s not that Kaufmann would have had anything new to say. We know him well. Since Kim Reynolds assumed the governorship Kaufmann repeatedly expressed his support for her and parroted talking points about why there were revenue shortfalls during the 87th Iowa General Assembly. When it comes to the final vote on bills before the House, Kaufmann has been there for the Republican majority on most of them. Where was he as chairman of the government oversight committee when Medicaid began heading south soon after the decision to privatize was made? He was in the back pocket of the Republican governor.

It is hard to say whether Kaufmann will hold his seat in the legislature this cycle. Democrat Jodi Clemens has been doing the work of a campaign — putting in the planning, volunteer organizing, fundraising, and voter contact needed to win people over. There is a lot of excitement about her campaign in the district. Beating three-term representative Bobby Kaufmann has always been a steep hill to climb. Kaufmann got 12,388 votes (73 percent) of 16,889 cast in 2016 running unopposed. When he last had an opponent in 2014, Kaufmann got 8,448 (66 percent) of 12,825 cast. He has the incumbent’s advantage this cycle and midterm voter turnout is expected to be better than in 2014 but less than 2016. All of this is to say if readers care about flipping the house, get out there and help Jodi Clemens win.

In the end it’s the voters of House District 73 who have reason to be aggrieved about our politics. Republican votes on a host of issues, combined with malpractice on the privatization of Medicaid, created a partisan environment no one asked for. Instead of bucking up and taking the heat that comes with being a public figure Kaufmann withers into a whining persona full of righteous indignation that rings hollow in the homes of people hard hit by Republican policy.

Kaufmann a victim? Suck it up buttercup.

Farmers Are Worried About Climate Change

theguardian.com

Research forecasts Iowa corn yields could drop in half within the next half-century thanks to extreme weather – yet it’s not part of the political conversation

by Art Cullen

Farmers around here are itching to go after that amber wave of soya beans, but there was that 5in rain a couple of weeks ago and then a 7in rain, and it drives even the retired guys batty.

Those beans aren’t worth much at the elevator thanks to a Trump trade war with China, but they’re worth even less getting wet feet in a pond that was a field which the glacier made a prairie bog some 14,000 years ago – until we came along and drained it.

This year, crops in north-west Iowa are looking spotty. Up into Minnesota they were battered by spring storms and late planting, and then inundated again in late summer. Where they aren’t washed out, they’re weedy or punky. If you go south in Buena Vista county, where I live in Storm Lake, the corn stands tall and firm.

Welcome to climate change, Iowa-style.

Job #1 For Democrats? Restore Real Democracy

 Bernie on Voter ID

As we come up to yet another election, we face the prospect of control of state and national legislatures being decided by black box voting machines and gerrymandered districts. This flies in the face of everything the founders stood for. The underlying principal that should be the cornerstone of our democracy must be one citizen, one vote.

Enough of the bogus voter suppression laws and the voting machines with no verifiability. Enough with the gerrymandered districts that make one citizen’s vote much less valuable than another citizen’s. Enough with the districts that look like a serpent in a nightmare. And especially enough with huge amounts of anonymous money being used to scorch the field of play in an election.

America is nearly 250 years old. At that age it is time she start to act like an adult and settle her squabbles through fair processes.

When Democrats are back in control, let me recommend that their first order of business should be to restore integrity to our democracy. This can be done by making elections fully open to scrutiny. That would mean voting in such a way that ballots can be retrieved and recounted. It is time to be done with any machine voting or counting. We should do what the Irish did with their voting machines when they realized they could be so easily tampered with. They sold them as scrap metal.

Instead as we move forward we need to look backward to a time when voting was done Wirth a paper and a pencil and the ballot could be recounted over and over.

Secondly, the voter suppression laws must be done away with. The 15th amendment was passed in 1870, and ever since then various states have been trying all sorts of tricks and hocus-pocus to cheat citizens out of their right to vote. Today’s “exact match” and Ohio’s “voter purge” laws are merely recent incarnations of suppression tactics of a previous era known as Jim Crow laws that used poll taxes and grandfather clauses to keep African Americans from voting. Enough with these shenanigans.

If a person is a citizen, they should have a right to vote. I would go even further and say that the state should implement rules that automatically registers a citizen when they come of age. Further, should anyone lose their vote, they must be notified and have a hearing when their most precious right is taken from them.

One special class of citizens that may automatically lose their right to vote are felons. Yet once they have completed their sentence their right to vote must be restored immediately upon completion of sentence.

As for the gerrymandering, districts should be contiguous and as equal in population as is possible based on legitimate census numbers. If possible, districts should also be competitive in nature so as to insure issues will be fully debated.

As for money in politics – the age old question of politicians being for sale – the best answer would be campaigns funded by tax dollars. This would level the playing field for most competitors and give a challenger a fighting chance. However in America there is also the the concern of what to do with the “super-Pacs” where tons of money can be used by one side or another in thinly veiled ads that are actually campaign ads.

The impact of super-Pac advertising is that it gives the richest in America an avenue of influence that others do not have. Currently there are no limits on super-Pac contributions or spending. Nor are there any rules on openness that allow the names of those contributing to these campaigns to be released. At the very least there must be openness in divulging who is trying to sway the public opinion.

Coming off one election that was very suspect and careening into another election without one damn problem being fixed, it is time to take inventory of the election system and get about making the changes that will restore faith in this system. We can’t expect republicans to do anything to restore the election system integrity. Most of the problems that the system has now was created by their party.

Since the courts have been packed from stem to stern with Republicans of pretty much the same ideology we can’t expect the courts to be a voice of sense in this area much longer.

However if the election systems are not fixed soon, faith in the system will erode as fast as a dune in a hurricane.
