HCR: Trump, Biden And The Democrats’ Way Forward

Heather Cox Richardson with President Joe Biden

God bless Heather Cox Richardson. You can read her letters for free on Substack and Facebook.

Heather Cox Richardson is one of the most reliable sources of information we have. As I have said many times, Democrats were railroaded by a fake media narrative about Joe Biden. We fell for it hook, line and sinker. With help from the right wing propaganda machine and corporate media. Our country has to solve this problem. It’s why Republicans stay in power when they have gone from merely having nothing to offer, to full-on traitors.

For followers who aren’t fans of watching video, I’ll share with you HCR’s first comments in print here for you to read.

“I talk about the Democrats more than I write about them because they’re not nuts… In this moment one of the things that people have asked me about is why didn’t people talk about Joe Biden being senile when he was in office. First of all, in my observation and I didn’t spend a huge amount of time with President Biden but I did spend time with him, I did talk to him.

What I always saw was a man with a fairly severe stutter who when he got tired the stutter got worse. But I never saw him unable to answer questions that were not scripted and to have a really good command of a wide range of material that was important. Now we know of course that Donald Trump doesn’t even read his presidential daily briefing.

So this idea somehow that he was kept hidden… he was the president of the United States – of course he wasn’t kept hidden.

And one of the things that I look at when I evaluate presidents is what are they getting done? And the Biden administration was one of the most consequential presidencies in American history. It got major legislation passed. It got major foreign relations stuff done.

Now if you think about that disastrous debate that Biden did, that was when he was negotiating the largest prisoner swap in American history that got back Evan Gershkovich for the United States and all these other prisoners as well.

So somehow this idea that there was this great conspiracy and Biden wasn’t really doing anything just doesn’t really hold water for me. So that’s what I have to say about Biden and this idea that somehow there should be hell to pay for no one talking about Biden’s abilities.

I mean I watched him really closely because I was one of the few people who was actually reporting on that administration rather than on whatever Trump was doing in that moment and I just find it enormously frustrating that so many people now are saying, you didn’t tell us… it was all there.. it was an incredibly transparent administration. They gave press conferences every day from all the major departments and they just didn’t get any press coverage.

One of the things that also frustrates me is people say Dems have doubled down on identity politics.. What the Dems have done is allowed Republicans to define them. Kamala Harris during the campaign literally never talked about identity politics. It was the Republicans who pinned that on them..”

She’s right. In a previous post I pointed out that Democrats, well everybody,  unconsciously take on the Republican point of view because their media is so dominant. That is the whole point of it and why we must start addressing the problem.

Watch the video.

Don’t Be A Bystander: Printable Shareable Resources From Tim Snyder

Happy Monday, lovers of democracy, fighters for freedom.

Sharing this urgent message and free, shareable,  anti-authoritarian resources from Timothy Snyder with permission –

Dear Friends,

I get asked all the time about posters and cards of the lessons On Tyranny to be posted or handed out. This brings back memories of the first publication, when I spent much of 2017 driving around in my pickup or walking around with a backpack: giving out the book, posting posters, and handing out cards.

I want you to know that there are free cards and posters of the twenty lessons of On Tyranny available for you at any time, just a click away. You may print them, post them, share them, pass them around, digitally or in the real world. All you have to do is follow this link and download or print the resources that it offers

I am happy if you buy the book, and I am happy that it has been a bestseller these last months, since that means that people find it helpful. Behind the lessons there are bits of historical and political analysis which, alas, are timely. On Tyranny is there as a vehicle for the knowledge about resistance that I tried to assemble from others wiser than me.

But you are always welcome to just take the lessons and pass them on — for free, any time. For a simple shareable card of just the twenty lessons, look here.

If you would like to share free On Tyranny resources on social media, here are messages you can forward (or adapt) on Instagram, Tiktok, Facebook, and Twitter. On Tyranny is also used as a resource for educators; you can find out more about that here.

I hope you find these useful! I’ll be looking for them!

Best

TS

PS: June 14th is No Kings Day. Protest. Millions will in hundreds of places, and I will be one them. (Lesson 13, Corporeal Politics).

Democrats Speak Out

Democrats are speaking out, but we aren’t hearing them because the major mass media has taken as its collective project to push Trump because they believe he will plump up their bottom line. In service to that stories relating what Democrats are doing, or stories negative on Trump are nearly non-existent.

However, here we have congress member Rosa DeLauro from Connecticut ripping into OMB Direct Russell Vought. At the end DeLauro explains to Vought what he and the administration are really doing. Too bad everybody in America won’t see this video: (8:25).

Heather Cox Richardson had some comments to clarify the significance of this confrontation:

“Yesterday the White House asked Congress to cancel $9.4 billion in already-appropriated spending that the Department of Government Efficiency identified as wasteful, a procedure known as “rescission.” Trump aides say the money funds programs that promote what they consider inappropriate ideologies, including public media networks PBS and NPR; the United States Agency for International Development (USAID), which provides food and basic medical care globally; and PEPFAR, the U.S. President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief that was established under President George W. Bush to combat HIV/AIDS in more than 50 countries and is currently credited with saving about 26 million lives.

Vought appeared today before the House Appropriations Committee, where members scolded him for neglecting to provide a budget for the year, which they need to do their jobs. But Vought had plenty to say about the things he is doing. According to ProPublica’s Andy Kroll, he claimed that under Biden “every agency became a tool of the Left.” He said the White House will continue to ask for rescissions, but also noted that, as Project 2025 laid out, he does not believe that the 1974 Impoundment Control Act, which requires the executive branch to spend the money that Congress has appropriated, is constitutional, despite court decisions saying it is.

Representative Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) told Vought: “Be honest, this is never about government efficiency. In fact, an efficient government, a government that capably serves the American people and proves good government is achievable is what you fear the most. You want a government so broken, so dysfunctional, so starved of resources, so full of incompetent political lackeys and bereft of experts and professionals that its departments and agencies cannot feasibly achieve the goals and the missions to which they are lawfully directed. Your goal is privatization, for the biggest companies to have unchecked power, for an economy that does not work for the middle class, for working and vulnerable families. You want the American people to have no one to turn to, but to the billionaires and the corporations this administration has put in charge. Waste, fraud, and abuse are not the targets of this administration. They are your primary objectives.” {ed. note: my bolding}

Yep, Democrats are speaking out, but the media is suppressing their speech. It is like the tree falling in the forest question. Does a tree falling in the forest make a sound if no one is there to hear it? Does a Democrat make a difference if no major news media is there to report it. The major news media was all over Jake Tapper about his load of horse crap. Thus he made a noise.

Democrats are already stepping up early and as loudly as they can. They will be hard to ignore. Already this week in a special election in deep red South Carolina a Democrat won a state legislative seat by an incredible 41%. People are really hungry for someone who will listen to them and act FOR them. The Joni Ernsts of the world are person non grata these days.

While Iowa’s current MAGA representation quake in fear of a rebuke from an increasingly unhinged Donald Trump and while Iowa’s MAGA representation pathetically tries to justify taking health care and food out of the mouths of the poor (“undeserving” Ashley Hinson? Good gawd) strong Democrats like Jennifer Konfrst, Sarah Trone Garriot, Travis Terrell, Kevin Techau and Ryan Melton are ready to truly represent the people of Iowa and will stand up to to Trump.

By the way, next Saturday is NO KINGS DAY! Be sure to get out and send your message. Locations of protests in Iowa will be found at indivisible.org. Not sure how up to the minute they will be as I understand that events are still being planned.

Get out there and be heard. Let the right wing media know you have a voice!

Sunday Funday: Remembering D-Day Edition

(8:45)

Hard to find a video that gives a feel for what the Allies really encountered on that momentous day. However, everyone knew what they were fighting for. Freedom, even if imperfect.

As I have mentioned many times, my father-in-law was part of the invasion force. He was at Omaha beach. That is about all I ever heard because he simply would not speak of it. You can understand why. But he knew why he was there. That he would speak of.

Now Republicans or MAGAs if you wish, have so perverted our system that our current president appears to be on the side of our enemies. The worst part is that half of America supports him and his ilk at lower levels.

As descendants of those who saved the world for democracy we get a chance to show that we are worthy of them next week. Next Saturday as the Nazi-adjacent president spends $100 million of our taxes throwing himself a birthday party, we have a chance to stand up to the man who wants to end our democracy. You know what I mean and you know what to do!

Anyone else feel that the whole Trump / Musk breakup is being staged to divert our attention from some other gawd-awful atrocity? I sure do.

A) Yet again we had a truly mediocre jobs report if you can trust their numbers. We have now found out that the March and April reports have both been adjusted which direction?

B) CO2 concentration in the atmosphere is now above 430 PPM. Scientists estimate it has been how long since the earth has had such a high reading?

C) Drunken Pete Hegseth announced that the Navy would be changing the name of what boat named after a Korean War hero?

D) Talk about falling flat. Stinky Pants tried to imply that what presidential visitor’s side lost WWII, causing a real embarrassment for Stinky?

E) Some D-Day trivia. What did General Eisenhower do the night before the D-Day invasion ?

F) Ukraine president Zelenskyy did have a card to play. What was the name for the operation that destroyed much of Russia’s bomber fleet deep inside Russia with drones?

G) Who is Thomas Fugate?

H) What former world leader is touring the US promoting their book “A Different Kind Of Power”?

I) Even as troops were invading Normandy beaches, President Roosevelt was delivering a fireside chat discussing what war related story?

J) How about another big tariff raise! Stinky Pants raised tariffs on what two ubiquitous commodities Monday to 50%?

K) Whoa! What’s the hottest skin care product out there for the in crowd?

L) Who made the word “abomination” a household work last week?

M) Burned out! What host of the podcast ‘WTF’ announced he would the podcast this fall after 16 years?

N) As part of the D-Day strategy, Allied forces deceived German generals into believing the attack would be led by what feared American general at another site?

O) David Jolly and Joe Walsh – what do these Republicans have in common?

P) Scandal of scandals! What two conspiracies about President Biden is old Stinky Pants investigating?

Q) What high ranking administration official stated last week that that people getting medicaid “Must prove they matter”?

R) How many allied troops were killed in the D-Day invasion?

S) In an almost unique action, Pamela Hemphill of Idaho turned down what?

T) Elon Musk unfriended White House aide Stephen Miller on X after Musk also did what to Miller?

One of my favorite Bible stories is the one where that leper came to Jesus asking for healing and Jesus said why bother “we all are going to die.” – Covie

Answers:

A) March was revised down by 65.000 to 120,000 and April revised down 30,000 to 147,000 a total revision of down nearly 100,000

B) 30,000,000 years.

C) The USNS Harvey Milk. The rename was announced at the start of pride month

D) German Chancellor Frederich Merz

E) Wrote a statement taking the blame for the failure of the invasion in case it failed

F) Spider web

G) Fugate is a recent (May ’24) 22 year old college graduate (U of Texas at San Antonio) put in charge of the Homeland Security’s terror prevention team last week

H) Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand. Ardern was the female Prime minister of NZ

I) The taking of Rome by the Allies on that day

J) Steel and Aluminum

K) Beef tallow. Smear it on!

L) Elon Musk – he called the OBBBA an “abomination. Really pissed Stinky Pants off.

M) Mark Maron

N) General Patton – did you see the movie?

O) They are registered Democrats now. Jolly is running as a Dem for governor of Florida

P) 1) that Biden died in 2020 and was replaced by a clone. 2) that Biden signed many things with an autopen and therefore those things are not valid (laws and pardons)

Q) CMMS (center for Medicare and Medicaid Services) administrator Dr. Mehmet Oz

R) 4,414 on D-Day

S) a pardon for her part in the January 6th attempted coup. She said what she did was wrong.

T) broke up his marriage. Rumor has Miller’s wife living with Musk.

Call things what they are. MAGA is a terrorist movement. ICE is a secret police force conducting Ethnic Cleansing. Elon Musk is an oligarch and Trump is a foreign-backed dictator. This is not an administration, it’s a regime, and our country is occupied. – The Other 98%

Joni Said What?

Joni (hearse) Ernst’s snarky apology said a little more than she wanted it to – at least the way I heard it. For those who need a refresher here is the 1 minute video where Ernst very sarcastically and snakily makes fun of Iowans who are understandably concerned about the potential loss of their health care insurance AND! the potential loss of their local health care facilities:

Right from the start you can tell that Ernst is being far from sincere. For one thing the setting is in a cemetery. This is hardly the background that conveys seriousness. One would expect a more sedate office background for that.

Ernst’s voice is notably condescending. Her tone is not contrite, but condescending conveying that she is not taking responsibility for her words but is instead blaming the listener for missing the obvious message that she was sending with her “we are all going to die” comment.

Next she gets even a little more condescending, implying that the audience is really stupid – so much so that she would have to tell them that the tooth fairy isn’t real.

Springboarding from the tooth fairy comment Ernst then brings in – based on the context of her commentary and presentation – what must be another fairy tale character when she continues “For those that would like to see eternal and everlasting life I encourage you to embrace my lord and savior Jesus Christ.”

Feels to me like Ernst is equating Jesus Christ with the tooth fairy in her condescending snark to those who she thinks of as apparently stupid. Seems to me most of the folks of Iowa are religiously inclined. I am surprised that someone hasn’t brought up the conflation of the tooth fairy and Jesus by Ernst.

Also seems pretty obvious that Senator Ernst has a very low opinion of the intelligence of the Iowa electorate.

Beyond this most recent incident I was reminded by a friend that back a few years ago Ernst had romantic relationship with a military lobbyist that landed her in some ethical hot water. Once again we see that Ernst is a much less than serious person and certainly less than concerned about Iowans:

“Virginia Canter, a former government ethics lawyer who served in administrations of both parties, said of the relationships with officials advocating before Ernst’s committee: “It kind of takes your breath away.”

The relationships, Canter said, make Ernst vulnerable to being extorted if people learned of them and could give someone undue influence over her.

“It draws into question every position she’s taken that would affect his office,” Canter said. “You’re expecting her to represent her constituents’ interests every time she supports a policy or votes. Once she has engaged in that kind of relationship, you have to call into question her impartiality.”

It is early, but because of crap like the above Ernst has already drawn a couple of solid Democratic candidates that would take the job seriously and would work for Iowans and treat them with the respect they deserve.

The first one with his hat in the ring was Nathan Sage an everyday working Iowan and an Army and Marine veteran. Sage is on the campaign trail and his message is connecting with real Iowans.

JD Scholten

The second is a man who should have some name recognition with Iowans. That is J.D. Scholten. Scholten ran for congress in the third district a few years back. His policy stances are solidly democratic and he has been staying in touch with Iowans in various ways including his newsletter “You’re Probably Getting Screwed.”

Two Santas About To Rumble

Thom Hartmann reminds us what the “two Santa Claus Theory’ is. (9:30)

Apparently the original video of Jude Wanniski speaking before a group of Republicans telling them how they need to kill the “Democratic” Santa Claus of social security, medicare, medicaid, and food security by creating an alternative Republican Santa Claus who doles out tax cuts to the wealthy.

Thom Hartmann explains the concept of the two Santa Clauses. He also expounds on the strategy Republicans have been using that is aimed at bankrupting the government that is aimed at drying up funds that are used to fund the “Democratic Santa Claus” programs.

But obviously Republicans have never been in a position to pull the trigger on outright demolition of the “Democratic Santa Claus” programs. Plus those programs are so popular that even they know that destroying them would be political suicide.

Republicans have been trying to kill the Democrats “Santa Claus” since the 1970s. Their strategy was to drive the country so far in debt that Dems would have to eventually make cuts to the core programs of SS, Medicare, Medicaid and SNAP or outright kill them. The other part of the strategy was to drive up the debt by strangling revenue.

They strangled the revenue with major cuts to taxes for corporations and for the individual wealthy, plus cutting taxes on the capital gains and inheritance. The final strangulation comes with cutting any enforcement of tax laws for the rich. Therefore even if the rich owe taxes, nobody is going to make them pay them. Auditing them calls for highly skilled auditors and MAGAs have cut the IRS down to those who are only able to audit the working class.

The Big Ugly Bill is their way of forcing the confrontation between the corporate backed MAGA Santa and liberals more rational and compassionate “Santa”. It so reminds me of Superman and his opposite Bizarro from my pre-teen comic book days.

However, MAGAs with the second coming of Donald Trump, under the guise of fiscal responsibility, have decided now is the time to start killing off the programs of the “Democratic Santa Claus” by taking a chain saw to some of the health care programs.

There will be no comparable cuts from “Republican Santa Claus” programs. Republican Santa Claus programs consist almost entirely of tax cuts for the wealthy. In the current showdown the MAGA congress and Mr. MAGA president himself will be cutting massive funds that will end access to health care for at least an estimated 11 million people or the equivalent of nearly four Iowas while giving huge tax advantages to the wealthy.

It may come as a surprise but the programs of the Republican Santa Claus are hugely unpopular. For some reason almost all Americans see it as truly unfair that poor people will die in order for the rich to get the their tax cuts. This is not the America they learned about from their parents, their schools, their friends and the media.

The fact that millions will suffer so the rich can have more is about as anti-American as any idea that has ever been floated in this country. Yet, a major party is on the verge of doing just that.

If the Big, Bad Bill (also known as the OBBBA) passes you can bet your bottom dollar that it will only be the first in a series of similar bills that will chew huge chunks out of the rest of the Democratic Santa Claus programs. The rest of medicaid will be defunded. Social Security will be privatized with billions invested in Wall Street. Medicare will be dismantled and privatized. Nothing will be off limits.

If you believe that we can re-elect Democrats and they will be able to rebuild what Trump has destroyed, think again. Will our next elections be free and fair? Remember one of the reasons that we are in this current situation is because of Republican voter suppression at the state level.

Also remember that the amount of money that the rich can pour into our political races is unlimited, Elon Musk bought his way into the government with $290 million dollars in “donations” to Trump. He also sought to buy a Supreme Court justice seat in Wisconsin with millions in “donations.”

Allegorically, we are about to have a cosmic battle between the Democratic Santa that fosters programs to help all the people with programs that funds programs that make sure everyone’s basic needs are met versus Republican Santa that funds more and more wealth for the rich with funds stolen from those who have little.

Please call your US senators and tell them that the OBBBA is bad for you, bad for them and bad for America.

More Maddow, Please

As you know, Rachel Maddow was on a self-chosen one night a week schedule on MSNBC for some time and her replacement was Alex Wagner the other four nights. After Donald Trump won the election, she helped out the network by coming back to work five nights a week but only for Trump’s first 100 days.

During those 100 days her coverage of Trump was  fearless. It almost felt like she was baiting him. She mocked him. She told the stories of fired workers, had them on the show, provided details of the ransacking of agencies by DOGE, and spent substantial time nightly showing footage of people protesting around the country. Iowa protests made the show.  She focused on the country rather than the White House and her show shined a light in the people’s direction, with nightly coverage of how we were fighting back against the Trump administration.

She also reported when Trump failed. She reported wins for the resistance. She followed full circle, reporting  when the Peace Institute got their building back. When they didn’t close as many Social Security offices as they wanted to, when they had to put things back. When they backed down. She had no worries at all about laughing in their faces, saying the emperor has no clothes.

The end of her 100 days was tough. One night a week is simply not enough. There was a lot of online activity as the end of her 100 days approached. Loyal viewers were begging her to stay longer.  On this podcast she explained what it was like and why she couldn’t continue to do it five nights.  She had made it look easy but it wasn’t easy emotionally, covering our slide into fascism. But she said she can do Mondays. At least we have her coverage one night a week. She is a national treasure, so we’ll take it and wish her well.

Rachel was the first guest on Nicole Wallace’s new podcast, “The Best People.”  Nicole sits down with the “smartest, funniest, wisest people she knows. These are the people who are the best at what they do and use their success to help others. New episodes drop on Mondays, beginning June 2nd. You can sign up for MSNBC Premium on Apple Podcasts to get early access, ad-free listening, and bonus content.”

“I feel like there is still real value in making sure that we’re covering them in such a way that is not the stories that they want us to tell and not the topics they want us to be covering. So the whole provocation and yanking our chain, you know the Trump 2028 stuff and all those things are designed to get us to react… we must express outrage because he’s done an outrageous thing. I get it.. I understand how it all works but I feel there is real value in making sure we are telling the stories that are not the stories of their choosing. – Rachel Maddow

Joni Manages To Make It Even Worse

Courier News: Ernst fleeing from a questioner June 4

As the elevator door closes, she says she is “very compassionate” and says to watch the “whole conversation.”

Dear Senator, we are happy to provide the whole conversation to the public who has likely seen your best stuff but most people probably haven’t watched the just-as-bad stuff that you are trying to pretend will exonerate you somehow from your self-imposed scandal. There were plenty of bad, embarrassing moments where the good people of Iowa politely and respectfully called you out for the horrendous job you are doing in Washington, DC.  Yes dear readers, have a look at the whole conversation at the town hall in Parkersburg.  You won’t be sorry.

And after you see the whole conversation as Joni suggests, you still won’t be voting for Joni Ernst in 2026.

Below is the entire livestream of the Parkersburg town hall. Start to finish it is really a must see. People had to drive, some for a couple of hours, to be there.

I would like to take this opportunity to interject into the conversation something that I feel has been overlooked.  At the time that Joni’s now infamous comment happened, she was trying to lie and say that they would only be taking people off of Medicaid who were not eligible.  This is factually incorrect. It was a lie.

A New York Times fact check of  Trump’s budget bill revealed it would cut enrollment by about 10.3 million people.  Trump and Allies Sell Domestic Policy Bill With Falsehoods

So we’re supposed to believe that none of these ten million are actually eligible?

People who are receiving Medicaid have gone through an arduous, lengthy, bureaucratic, documentary process to be determined eligible for benefits. They are required to continually resubmit updated information and minor changes.  They have been determined by a rigorous process to be eligible for benefits.

The fact is, Republicans don’t want millions of people to be eligible because they want the money for their billionaire friends. In their privileged minds, what they want and what they think should be, is equivalent to what is.  Joni and other Trump loyalist say people are not eligible because they think they are taking their money.

Make no mistake. Republicans want ALL of the money. They will not stop until they get it unless we stop them.  To that end MAGA has taken Republicans like Joni Ernst so far over the edge that they will say anything – and feel nothing.

May as well give her a call, we’re paying her salary.
