Media Chided By One Of Its Own For Coddling Trump: “History Will Not Judge Us Kindly”

ICYMI. This is an excerpt from an article by Margaret Sullivan,  media columnist for the Washington Post.  She’s no political hack. She speaks with authority on this issue.  Here are her credentials.

Education: Georgetown University; Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. Before joining The Post, she was the New York Times public editor, and previously the chief editor of the Buffalo News, her hometown paper, where she started as a summer intern. She is a graduate of Georgetown University and Northwestern University’s Medill School of Journalism. She was a member of the Pulitzer Prize board from 2011 to 2012, and was twice elected as a director of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, where she led the First Amendment committee. While living in Manhattan, Sullivan taught in the graduate schools of journalism at Columbia University and the City University of New York.

“For nearly five years, the story has been Trump. And, in all that time, the press is still — mostly — covering him on the terms he dictates.

We remain mesmerized, providing far too much attention to the daily circus he provides.

We normalize far too much, offering deference to the office he occupies and a benefit of the doubt that is a vestige of the dignified norms of presidencies past.

And day after day, we allow him to beat us up. And then we come back for more writing headlines that somehow combine the words “Trump” and “strategy.” Or ponder in cable-news panels whether he’s turned the corner and started acting more presidential. Or downplay the sheer madness of the disinfectant idea with a news alert and related story politely stating that “some experts” call it dangerous.

LTTE On Miller-Meeks

From our friend Don Paulson down in Muscatine county:

Does Republican Mariannette Miller-Meeks think we are stupid?

Miller-Meeks is running for a seat in the U.S. Congress and her opponent is Rita Hart.  Rita is a farmer, taught school for twenty years, and is a life-long Iowan.

In her latest commercial, Miller-Meeks claims that “Washington Democrats and Rita Hart” did nothing to stop viruses from Asia.  What an amazingly stupid thing to say.

The Obama Administration developed a detailed plan for an early response to a disease such as COVID.  Trump’s team was told about this.  (Kaiser Health News, Victoria Knight, 5/15/20.)  Also, President Obama warned of a possible pandemic in 2014 and wanted funds to prepare for it.  Republicans blocked the funding request.  (Atlanta Journal-Constitution, ArLuther Lee, 4/15/20.)  An article in the Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology News tells us of 25 warning signs of a coming pandemic, starting with a 60-Minutes story in 2005.  (Kevin Davies, 4/17/20)

Rita Hart served in the Iowa State Senate.  Miller-Meeks served in the Iowa State Senate- why didn’t SHE stop the virus from Asia?

As our next congresswoman, Rita Hart will vote to make healthcare more affordable, invest in public education, protect Iowa’s family farms, care for our veterans.

Miller-Meeks supported taking away the Affordable Care Act, turn Medicare into a voucher system, and kept the door open for the privatization of Medicaid.  She is an eye doctor who wants to be in the U.S. Congress.  I just can’t see it!

I thank Don for letting me use his letter. I told him I would use his LTTE as a jumping off place for some comments:

First I don’t think enough attention is being given to Miller-Meeks stand on health care. A major part of her campaign is to emphasize her medical degree. Somehow many of us tend to equate being a doctor with being in favor of healthcare fore all. That is certainly a misconception. As Don notes in his LTTE “Miller-Meeks supported taking away the Affordable Care Act, turn Medicare into a voucher system, and kept the door open for the privatization of Medicaid.”

Miller-Meeks stand on healthcare is no different than any Republican. If you can’t pay for it, you don’t get it. Much like Joni Ernst we can expect Miller-Meeks along with Ashley Hinson, David Young and Randy Feenstra will all sit back and hope that the SCOTUS will kill Obamacare so they don’t have to dirty their hands. However, given a chance Miller-Meeks and compadres would be more than happy to vote Obamacare out. Don’t give them the chance.

Oh – and that concept pre-existing conditions will be covered? I wouldn’t bet the house on that. Nor would I bet that everyone will be covered. One creed of the Republican Party is that if you can’t pay, you don’t play.

As Don notes, Rita Hart is a lifelong Iowan, a farmer and an educator. Farming and schools continue to lose in Republican administrations. Yet those are two of the very backbone industries of Iowa. Republicans do not have the respect for those who work in those industries.

For what Iowa needs, Miller-Meeks falls short. But then so do Republicans in all four districts. No matter what these candidates say in appearances or on their websites, Republican candidates are expected to vote along a very narrow range. Since the party has moved to the extreme right the latitude of their officeholders or candidates to not on party lines is very small. Those who do not vote the party line get primaries – and often beaten in that primary – in the next election.

So forget the speeches and the policy positions. Republican candidates up and down the ballot will be expected to vote as they are told. That is especially true for congressional candidates.

If you don’t think this is true, look at Joni Ernst’s record. While she say she supports healthcare, she works to kill Obamacare. While she claims to support Social Security and Medicare, behind closed doors with Republican insiders she says both must be cut way back.

If you think a Republican will listen to what you have to say forget it. Their orders do not come from us.

You want someone who will listen to what you have to say, vote fro Democrats. Theresa Greenfield, Rita Hart, Abby Finkenauer, Cindy Axne and JD Scholten. They actually live in your community and care about the communities that live in.

“How Do You Ask A Man To Be The Last Man To Die For A Lie?”

The headline is a bit of a paraphrase of famous quote from John Kerry before a Senatorial committee investigating the Viet Nam War. Nearly 30 years later this quote is in many ways applicable to the top issue of the time. Let’s update Kerry’s quote a bit to fit today:

“How do you ask anyone to die for Trump’s lies that have unleashed a pandemic on his own country?”

As I am sure most everyone knows we found out that Trump had been advised just how serious and potentially damaging the corona virus was back in early February. Journalist Bob Woodward revealed that amazing fact as he shilled for his new book last Tuesday. Woodward also had audio recording  to prove that Trump had said what Woodward reported.

Trump then went on to lie to America about the seriousness of the virus in order to buoy his chances at re-election. Rather than take actions that most prudent leaders would take in a pandemic to slow the spread of the virus, Trump lobbied to open the economy back up and other actions that would serve to spread the virus like a raging wild fire.

Trump also knew that age was not a factor in the spread of the virus. He has been agitating to get schools reopened and classrooms back to “normal” to prove that the virus is a “hoax.” As if his push to reopen the economy in May wasn’t bad enough for spreading the killer virus, reopening schools and putting children and teachers in close proximity to each other will be just as bad if not worse.

However, Trump couldn’t force the opening of schools himself. For that he needed compliant governors to push for opening schools in their own states. We have the epitome of a compliant governor here in Iowa. Kim Reynolds has bent over backwards to push every Iowa kid into classrooms. She has also done all she can to make it nearly impossible for schools to close even if the virus roars through a school.

Reynolds has also gone out of her way to keep information on schools virus rates from the public and from parents within a district. In short Kim Reynolds acts as if she is on the virus’s side in this war.

At this point I am so mad I am spitting bullets. So this post may be a bit incoherent. I have so many thoughts I want to express, but it all comes back to the fact that it has now been proven what Trump knew and that he knew it in plenty of time to save tens (soon maybe hundreds) of thousands of Americans and he not only did nothing, he employed a strategy that would enable the virus to ravage the country AND the economy AND the future of our children.

We now have a country with thousands upon thousands of families that have lost members all because of Trump’s actions. Death is always a tragedy within families, but to lose family to a virus because the president didn’t want to do the right thing makes the loss even more painful. That these deaths were often alone and extremely painful makes it even worse. It is as if the president was telling families that their family member was not worth the effort to stop the virus.

We know that Republican members of congress knew that the virus was going to be bad. We had a couple selling stock positions following a briefing for Republican Senators only. We had Republican governors who hesitated to open businesses back up only to be hounded by the Trump administration to reopen.

The US will record its 200,000th death next week – although excess death comparisons with last year indicate that number is probably closer to 250,000. How many could have been saved had Trump only acted as any prudent human would have acted? 50,000? 100,000? 150,000? Of course we don’t know, but we do know our losses would be much lower than what we currently have.

Remember each one of those who died was a member of someone’s family – a grandmother or grandfather, a father or mother, a brother, sister or niece or nephew. They were someone’s employee or a business owner. Each and every death was felt within a circle of people. Many families could not even have a funeral- a further deep insult in an already bad situation.

Don’t forget those who had the corona virus and recovered. The virus is so new that we have no idea what long term effects might be. Remember how shingles became a surprise later-in-life hangover from the childhood chicken pox? We have no idea if there will be any long term effects from corona virus. We do know that organ damage has been found even in those who had no symptoms.Forty years from now this may come back to haunt those who survived the virus.

One last note: Shame on Joni Ernst for claiming that the virus is responsible for far fewer deaths than is being reported. She needs to apologize to Americans, Iowans and especially doctors and nurses. Ernst, it is time for you to step out of your fantasy world and face reality. Reality is a virus that shows no signs of lessening and will continue to devastate families and our medical personnel and other essential workers.

I am old enough to remember when our leadership put the health of the country before their desires. As a matter of fact I remember a recent administration that wrote a book on what actions to take in a pandemic. I believe that administration was the Obama/ Biden administration.

The very first step we must take toward recovery is to throw these losers out into the street and get some decent leadership that has a plan on what to do. And we must throw out those who have simply shut up and gone along with the insanity that Trump fostered. Joni Ernst’s response is not even worthy of a fifth grader, let alone a US senator. C’mon Iowa, we can do better than Ernst.

Biden will need a Democratic congress to get the legislation needed to combat the virus and to restart a broken economy. Republicans will only do anything they can to make Biden and the country fail.

VOTE! Get an absentee ballot and vote it early! Walk it down to the courthouse if you need to. Your vote has never been more important!

Trump Uses Executive Orders To Attack Workers And Unions

by Ralph Scharnau

More than 150 million workers form the backbone of the nation’s economy. Their labor produces vital goods and services. On Labor Day, September 7, we honor and celebrate their work. Workers play a key economic role, operating as producers, consumers, and taxpayers.

Labor onions created a collective voice for millions of workers. The labor movement took a leadership role in shaping working conditions like the eight-hour day, employer-backed health coverage, paid vacations and sick days, and safe workplaces.

Today, only about 12% of the U.S. workforce belong to trade unions. Organized labor’s decades-long decline means that millions of people now hold two or even three jobs to pay for food, child care, housing, and transportation.

The loss of unions has also resulted in the erosion of good jobs and growing income inequality. Organized labor faces hostile employers, falling membership, antiunion legislation, and antagonistic court decisions.

To President Trump, the U.S. working class are simply pawns to be used cynically for advancing a fundamentally anti-worker political agenda. For over three-and-a-half years, Trump and his administrative minions have rolled back regulations protecting workers and their rights.

The administration has restricted eligibility for overtime pay, restricted the rights of gay and transgender workers, and restricted the rights of organized workers to collectively bargain by giving employers more control over wages and working conditions.

One of President Trump’s first executive orders was to overturn the Fair Pay and Safe Workplace rule requiring federal contractors to follow safety and labor laws. This measure would require companies bidding on federal contracts to disclose their history of violations of labor and employment laws relating to workplace safety, discrimination, minimum wage, and overtime pay. Trump also withdrew from a series of rules protecting mine workers from major hazards like explosive coal dust and toxic mining chemicals

The administration wants employers to have the power to dismiss workers on the basis of sexual orientation. And the number of OSHA inspectors now stands at the lowest level in the agency’s half-century of operation.

The Trump administration and nearly all Republicans oppose raising the federal minimum wage while Democrats want to raise it. About a year ago, with support of most Democrats and just three Republicans, the Democratic-led House of Representatives narrowly approved an increase in the federal minimum wage from $7.25 an hour to $15 an hour. The current federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour has not been increased in 10 years. Boosting the pay to $15 an hour provides wage protection to millions of low-wage workers in all types of jobs. Passage of the bill appears extremely unlikely since Republican currently control the White House and the Senate.

Trump seems committed to administration-friendly military generals and CEOs of giant corporations. Budgets reflect this with immense defense increases and cuts in social welfare spending.

The Trump administration has retreated from its professed support for protecting the rights, safety, and economic welfare of workers. Some employers even want to eliminate workers’ right to organize as a union. They hire union-busting law firms. Workers fight back with legal challenges and direct action, street demonstrations, strikes, and lobbying. Unions continue to face hostility from employers and conservative politicians.

Actions of the Trump administration have worsened the bifurcation of our society into super rich and the rest of us. Workers, unions and most of the populace want a country where all people have access to living wages, decent housing, and humane working conditions regardless of their skin color, sexual orientation, or economic status.

Trump Is President Because Of Our Broken Media

So crazy Trump hired a “Faux-bama” so that he could re-enact some sort of trauma from childhood  (just guessing), where he berates and then fires “Faux-bama.”  I have to admit it made me laugh out loud, in spite of the horror that someone like this is our president. But that is ongoing;  most of us face down this terror every day.  Someone posted a general query on Twitter the other day, “Did you really think Trump would be this bad?”  My answer was “I did. I really did. I’m surprised the White House is still standing to be perfectly honest. I thought all the contents would be looted by now.”

So Trump having a psychological need to pretend to fire a faux Obama is darkly hilarious and perfectly in sync with everything we’ve so casually observed about Trump over the years. But that was not the most important piece of information from the CNN article about Cohen’s book about to be released.

Here at BFIA we’ve been ranting “It’s the Media, Stupid” for years, actually for more than a decade.  It’s obvious how and why Trump made his way to the presidency and Cohen articulates it in his book, according to this article. Sure, the Republican enablers climbed on board later after Putin took full advantage of our broken media system and sealed the deal. But Trump’s ascension to the level where it was even possible, was a direct result of our fragmented, shattered, seemingly irreparable, messed up system of information dissemination.

If  we manage to save this election from being grabbed by Trump and his Putin mob cronies, we will have to do something about our media system in order to carry on.  You just can’t have hundreds of millions of people disagreeing on a daily basis on what color the sky is because some saw somewhere on the internet or heard on Fox that the sky is green.

Campaigns refer to earned media, meaning broadcast time that is not a paid advertisement. You hold a rally or event and the media covers it as news. In Trump’s case, everything he says and does is considered news by the broadcast media and cable news.  This was true before he became president. The amount of free media he received has been estimated to be in the billions.  And that is why he is president.

https://www.cnn.com/2020/09/05/politics/michael-cohen-book-trump-white-house/index.html

“Donald Trump’s presidency is a product of the free press,” he writes. “Not free as in freedom of expression, I mean free as unpaid for. Rallies broadcast live, tweets, press conferences, idiotic interviews, 24-7 wall-to-wall coverage, all without spending a penny. The free press gave America Trump.

“Right, left, moderate, tabloid, broadsheet, television, radio, Internet, Facebook — that is who elected Trump and might well elect him again.”
