The Trouble With Political Door Knocking

The numbers vary among different legislators and political activists, yet somewhere between 65,000 and 90,000 registered Iowa Democrats did not vote in 2022. It seems like an easy problem to solve. Reach out to those voters, the ones that still live in the state or district, and encourage them to vote. Easy-peasy lemon-squeezy… done before you know it. It surely will make a difference!

Not so fast!

While a good number of political activists swear that in-person contact — at people’s homes or by telephone — is the most effective way to get voters to vote, Democratic activists who attended the Aug. 17 People over Politics town-hall meeting in Shueyville were skeptical. One activist, who was critical of the Iowa Democratic Party, said “door knocking doesn’t work,” based on his personal experience. I spent time at the doors during State Senator Kevin Kinney’s 2022 campaign and must admit that between people not being home, having already voted, and living complicated lives, door knocking wasn’t the best use of my time in a campaign. All the same, what else is there to do?

On Sunday, Aug. 20, about 50 political activists gathered in Iowa City for training in how to canvass in the No Off-Years campaign designed to begin talking to voters now and gain commitments to vote in November 2024. Johnson County, the Iowa City-Coralville area particularly, has a different set of challenges to address with a high density of Democrats. The goal is to match or beat the Iowa Secretary of State’s 2020 voter turnout percentage of 74.0 percent in the county (86 percent of active voters). Statewide the election had 76.0 percent turnout (81.2 percent of active). In this usage, “to canvass” refers to a lot of door-knocking. The county party laid out the plan to address infrequent voters in an Aug. 22, email:

Our GOTV team begins canvassing on September 10. We will go out on six separate dates in September and October. We will be talking to Democrats who are “inactive” or who vote infrequently as well as liberal to moderate “no party” voters, and learning what issues are of importance to them and their families. This information will be very helpful in understanding how to best appeal to No Party voters whose top issues align with Democratic values.

Email from the Johnson County Democrats, Aug. 22, 2023.

If people are not motivated to vote and door knocking and telephone calls don’t work to get them out, what is the approach activists should use to get ready for November 2024? An answer to this question is above the pay grade for most volunteers. Right or wrong, the assumption, at least in Johnson County, is that door knocking does work, so full steam ahead. That may not work as well in districts like House District 91 where Democrats are not concentrated in a few areas, and the Republican won the state house race in Johnson County and district-wide.

I am in the “door knocking is one tool in the organizer’s kitbag” camp on the spectrum of how to win voters over and get them to the polls. The main trouble with political door-knocking is in places like Johnson County, a substantial, machine-like organization is created to contact voters and use a specific script when they do. Door-knocking and telephone calling is scheduled in shifts where the volunteer has little control over which voters are contacted, or why they were chosen for attention. One has to have faith in the system that the masterminds of developing canvass lists know what they are doing. The recent lack of success Iowa Democrats experienced hasn’t instilled such faith.

Let’s get back to the basics. In 1964 John F. Kennedy lost Iowa yet his constituents were hard at work trying to make a difference. I watched my father do his voter contact planning and it was not complicated. 1). Pick up a mimeographed page with a generic city block printed on it from the union local. 2). Learn the names, addresses, and phone numbers of every voter on the block and add them to the form. 3). Meet with neighbors and ask if they would vote for JFK and how certain they were. 4). Make a note on the sheet. 5). Follow up when the election got closer. It all sounds so simple. A person was in charge of a geographic turf, gathered needed information on all voters, and engaged them to get out those voting for JFK.

Obama used a similar system in 2008, although his campaign provided names, addresses and contact information. Our neighborhood organizer had a paper list of every voter in their turf and worked them until they knew where each person stood on voting for Obama, and if they weren’t, whether they were persuadable. Unlike JFK, Obama won Iowa that election and in 2012 as well. It was the in-person localized contact that made a difference during the Obama campaign. So what happened?

Data heads took over voter targeting and the voter contact operation by managing a voter database comprised of available voter information.

With the rise in campaign technology beginning with the Howard Dean campaign in 2004, how campaigns were conducted changed. Obama brought the technology of campaigns together and we had an edge on Republicans. That didn’t last long.

How Do Iowa Democrats Proceed? Blog for Iowa, Aug. 10, 2023.

Working from a voter database instead of from a neighborhood has its merits. When there aren’t enough volunteers, it can prioritize which voters get contacted. For Democrats, that is usually people who don’t vote consistently or meet certain demographic profiles like age, sex and area of residence. Under the “we don’t have enough volunteers so the party will pick which voters to contact” method, volunteers can be disenfranchised. Some of this dissatisfaction surfaced at the meeting in Shueyville.

It seems a bit much to ask Democratic activists to have blind faith that the party and its data heads know what they are doing. Democratic support for candidates in Iowa degraded beginning with the 2010 election, culminating with the 2016 election when Republicans gained a legislative trifecta. While the Israelites were made to wander in the wilderness for forty years for their disobedience and lack of belief, let’s hope it doesn’t take Iowa Democrats that long to get with the program. 40 years of Republicans in charge would be hella bad.

Don’t like door knocking and phone calling? Stop complaining and do something else that makes a difference. Something like taking ownership of your neighborhood and maximizing how many votes can be produced for your candidates. The Democratic Party must determine how to better empower this kind of activism.

Iowa High School Democrats

One of the issues discussed at an Aug. 17 meeting in Shueyville, with representatives of the Iowa House Democrats, was registering high school students to vote. There are processes and conflicts in doing so within some school districts. To hear attendees tell about it, it was a struggle.

State Representative Elinor Levin nodded when I mentioned House Minority Leader Jennifer Konfrst had been promoting Iowa High School Democrats as an organizing tool. Never heard of it? It is a national organization for Democratic high school students with state and local chapters.

High School Democrats of America empowers and encourages students to take on an active role in the fight for Democratic victories across the country. In addition to fostering civil discourse among those with opposing viewpoints, HSDA provides a platform for members to impact the political process in a substantive way and make their voices heard on a national level.

People Over Politics Comes To House District 91

On Thursday, Aug. 17, the Iowa House Democrats People Over Politics tour of conservative districts came to House District 91. About 20 people, all residents of the district, attended the town hall-style meeting at the Shueyville Community Center. About all we had in common was that we were Democrats who held a deep dislike for our Republican State Representative Brad Sherman.

The 90-minute session was mostly an airing of grievances as State Representatives Amy Nielsen, who previously represented Shueyville, and Elinor Levin from Iowa City moderated the discussion. Until now, there had been few gatherings of Democrats in the district. It was a great opportunity to hear from Democratic representatives about what’s happened at the statehouse, ask questions about the legislative session, and express our legislative priorities.

People Over Politics was the Iowa House Democrats response to increasing extremism among majority Republicans. After surveying the electorate, Democrats distilled four issues about which most Iowans (not just Democrats) can agree. Following are the four key issues from their website:

Lower Costs for Iowans

Too many Iowans are still struggling to make ends meet today. Their wages simply aren’t keeping up with the rising costs of healthcare, food costs, child care, and utility bills. While we recognize the state legislature cannot control all the ups and downs of the national economy, we can take action to help lower costs and reduce living expenses for Iowans.

Here is how we put more money in the pockets of Iowans:

Expand access to affordable child care.
Lower taxes for working families instead of more handouts to big corporations.
Create more affordable housing options.
Expand the use of renewable energy to lower gas prices and utility costs as well as create good jobs.

Supporting Iowa’s Public Schools

For generations, Iowans have counted on great public schools to educate our kids and be the heart of communities large and small. But we’ve lost ground and our public school kids are losing out and teachers are leaving the classroom.

Here is how we renew our commitment to great public schools:

Fully fund public schools to keep up with rising costs and guarantee every kid in every zip code gets a great education.
Raise pay for educators and give them a seat at the table.
Stop the Governor’s private school voucher plan to ensure public money is used to help public school.

Protecting Reproductive Freedom

Everyone deserves the right to make their own health care decisions, especially when it comes to reproductive care and abortion. Lawmakers have no place interfering in someone else’s decisions about when to start a family. A majority of Iowans support reproductive freedom and believe that private health care decisions belong between an individual, their family, and their doctor.

Here is how we will protect the reproductive freedom of Iowans:

Stop the Governor and Iowa Republican ban on all abortion.
Guarantee reproductive freedom by putting it in Iowa’s Constitution.
Expand access to reproductive health care across Iowa.

Legalizing Marijuana

It’s time. A majority of adult Iowans support legalizing marijuana for recreational use. Legalizing marijuana for adult use will keep Iowans safe, stop our tax dollars from going to neighboring states, improve the quality of life for Iowans suffering from chronic illnesses, and stop wasting state resources to unfairly punish Iowans

Here is how we can do the right thing and keep Iowans safe, while moving Iowa’s future forward:

Regulate a safe product that Iowans already use
Use new tax revenue to invest in education and local communities.
Save taxpayer dollars and stop clogging up our courts and prison system with non-violent offenders.
Fixing Iowa’s broken medicinal cannabis program to help those undergoing cancer treatment, and others with chronic conditions like epilepsy, deserve access to improve their quality of life.

Iowa House Democrats People Over Politics website.

Iowans are tired of their representatives playing politics in the statehouse instead of listening to their constituents. Brad Sherman is one of the worst in that regard. The grievances of the group covered a broad span of topics. While a single meeting among voters won’t accomplish much. The hope is it is the beginning of an organizing process that will provide an opportunity to replace radical conservatives currently representing us.

Letters, We Send Letters

While the Letters to the Editor continue to get squeezed from Iowa papers we continue to speak out and let them know what we believe.

Once again here is a LTTE from blogforiowa friend, Don Paulson. He packs a lot of punch into a few words:

Republican State Representative Taylor Collins must have tunnel vision. It seems all he can talk about and take credit for is tax cuts. Too bad for most Iowans they are regressive tax cuts- the lower your income the higher percentage you pay in taxes. What people pay in other states is irrelevant to Iowans.

Everyone knows that tax cuts don’t pay for themselves. Ask anyone in Kansas or Louisiana. The Republicans there did the same thing and soon had a fiscal disaster on their hands. Based on what the Iowa Republicans did in the last legislative session here we can expect the same in the near future.

This state cannot grow without revenue. Republicans keep wanting to give the store away.

Their give-a-way to the religious schools will cost nearly a billion dollars for the first four years. Meanwhile they starve the public school system of needed funds.

Most Iowans care about the environment and clean water. In 2010 they approved the Iowa Outdoor Recreation Trust Fund Amendment. There has never been any money appropriated for it. This past session the Republicans even took funding away from the water quality monitoring system. Hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil!

It’s clear Iowa is going in the wrong direction. The terrible fiscal policies combined with the shameful legislation against women, SNAP recipients, and youth makes it seem we’re in a race to the bottom.

Makes me think of that old saying “Figures lie and liars figure.”

hobnobbing with criminals?

I posted a comment to Senator Grassley’s office. I look at Grassley as one of the biggest hypocrites and perhaps one of the worst ever for “party first.” You may remember earlier this summer when Grassley released some documents that were considered to be false concerning President Biden. Grassley then declared “I don’t care if they are not accurate.”

His dogged pursuit of anything that might put the President or his son in a bad light made me think of Trump and how his daughter Ivanka and son-in-law Jared Kushner were put into highly sensitive policy positions in the Trump administration but were able to squeeze in a little work on the side that netted them about $2.65 billion.

Here is my question to Grassley:

I am really disgusted that we are wasting taxpayer money on a long continuing investigation of Hunter Biden who after 5 years has been shown to have done nothing. Nor was he ever a government employee, whereas Jared Kushner and his wife Ivanka Trump took money openly from foreign countries while in the employment of the US government at very high administrative positions.

Senator, you trade on a reputation as a corruption buster. Why have you not as yet launched an investigation of the $2 Billion that Kushner got from the Saudis or the $600+ million that Ivanka Trump got from China in trade preferences. Again, these were both done as these two worked in the very upper levels of the Trump administration in policy making positions.

This is corruption at its absolute worst, yet no one – especially you – are doing anything.

Do you stand against corruption or not? This is your chance to show you do.

Kids – don’t try this at home

Rare footage of 1950’s housewife on LSD (Full Version) (8:45)

Amidst all of the swirling news of insurgencies and trials, of foreign intrigue and of economic uncertainty in many corners of the world, this week will focus on one of the best examples of belief in the future that we can think of. That is the official end of summer as school doors open and we once again go about the business of preparing the youth for their eventual place in society.

Here is hoping your children have a successful school year. May they exceed your expectations and maybe fulfill your dreams.

We will ask some questions about school starting if we can shove some of the questions about MAGA trials out of the way for a bit:

A) So here is a quick school question to start with – approximately how many teachers are teaching in the US?

B) In a little bit of a different story on climate change – children in what state sued that state for not following climate statements in their constitution and won a decision last week?

C) Leaders of what two normally hostile countries met at Camp David with President Biden to discuss mutual security interests Friday?

D) Yellowknife in Canada’s Northwest Territory is seldom in the news. Why is it in the news this week?

E) The Maui emergency services chief said he did not call for the use of warning sirens as the fire closed in on Lahaina for what reason?

F) 91 is the new number related to Donald Trump. What does the number 91 signify in relation to Donald Trump?

G) 15 minutes of fame: Abigail Jo Shry of Alvin, Texas made the front page last week for doing what related to the Trump trials?

H) A hurricane is hitting Southern California right now. How long has it been since Southern California was last hit by a hurricane?

I) What is the oldest public school in the US? (Hint: it is in Boston)

J) In a strange ruling the body governing competitive chess (The International Chess Federation) banned what group of people from women’s competition?

K) Who announced their candidacy in Iowa’s first congressional district Tuesday setting up a rematch of 2022?

L) As China’s economic crisis deepens, what major China based real estate company filed for bankruptcy protection in the US Thursday?

 M) Donald Trump and his fellow indicted conspirators have until Friday night to turn themselves in for processing on the Georgia indictments. To what facility must they report to?

N) The James Webb Telescope has given us many incredible space photos, but one last week that showed what seemed to be a giant what may be the most memorable so far?

O) The details of a police raid on what kind of business in Marion, Kansas get stranger and stranger, especially after one of the business owners died from the stress of the raid?

P) President Biden made a victory lap Wednesday on the first anniversary of what major piece of legislation that greatly strengthened the US economy?

Q) Fani Willis wants the date March 4, 2024; Donald Tump’s lawyers say April of 2026 to start what?

R) During what decade did most teens begin staying in school through high school?

S) What word that sounded like a racial slur did Mr. Trump use in a social media post to describe Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis?

T) Sixty years ago next Monday (August 28, 1963) what major protest took place in Washington DC?

Live your life so that millions around the world won’t celebrate when you’re indicted in 4 separate jurisdictions. – John Fugelsang

Answers:

R) the 1930s

S) ‘rigger’

T) Aug. 28 will be the 60th anniversary of the March on Washington

While I know she doesn’t care about that kind of stuff, if Fani Willis puts Trump in jail awaiting trial, she’ll almost certainly be the Time Magazine “Person of the Year” and be responsible for creating the sales of more beer, wine, chips and chicken wings than the Super Bowl. – Jack Hopkins tweet

Iowa-03 Groceries (30 seconds)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASEAugust 17, 2023CONTACTMatt Sinovicmatt@progressiowa.org | (515) 423-0133

Des Moines, IowaFairness for Iowa released a new TV ad this week, to hold Congressman Zach Nunn accountable for protecting corporate profits instead of protecting Iowans. Fairness for Iowa launched their coalition last week, and today’s ad, Groceries, is the first in a seven-figure paid media effort.

Watch Groceries, which will air on broadcast television and online.

“Since becoming a member of Congress, he’s supported tax cuts that help Big Oil, Big Pharma and Big Ag,” said Matt Sinovic, executive director of Progress Iowa, part of the Fairness for Iowa coalition. “At the same time he has attacked Medicare and Social Security recipients, small farmers and hard-working Americans. Fairness for Iowa will continue to hold him accountable and ensure Iowans know Nunn is helping wealthy corporations rake in record profits while the rest of us struggle to get by.”

Nunn has been in office since January and has already built a record that fails Iowa’s working families.

  • He has supported wealthy corporations over veterans, seniors, and Iowa jobs while voting to raise grocery prices (HR 2811)
  • He has helped excessively wealthy people, like former President Trump, who cheat on their taxes (HR 23)
  • He asked Medicare and Social Security recipients to balance the budget instead of America’s top One Percent of earners (HJRes 12)
  • He supported tax breaks that would help Big Pharma (HR 2673) and,
  • He voted to give Big Oil billions in tax breaks (HR 2811).

Read the full script for “Groceries” below:“Everything is so expensive. And Zach Nunn has voted to make it worse.Zach Nunn voted with big oil to make it harder to lower gas prices. He sided with big drug companies against lower prices for prescriptions. He sided with big ag while voting to kill off family farms and raise the price of groceries. Now, he wants to give all those corporations more tax breaks. Zach Nunn is protecting corporate profits while we pay more.”Fairness for Iowa encourages Rep. Nunn’s constituents to call his office at (515) 400-8180 to demand that he stop protecting corporate profits. The coalition is planning additional opportunities for Iowans to take action. Bohannan Versus The MAGA Machine

1 minute:

Christina Bohannan is back in the race once again against Marionette Miller-Meeks. Bohannan will bring her background of achievement from a lowly background to the fight again. Unlike her opponent, Bohannan remembers where she came from and will use that as the guide for her policies that will focus on the common iowan.

The vote is fully a year and more off. In those intervening months we will see a Democratic Party that has reoriented the economy for the working class continue to surge. We will see the MAGA Party doin all they can to stop the surge that President Biden has created. The question will be if Biden and his Democratic leaders will get the credit they deserve for taking an economy on the brink of collapse and rebuilding it into the vibrant economy we have today.

We have an interesting dynamic in this country where Democrats build good economies based on broad participation and good wages. Then for some reason voters turn the economy over to Republicans who in turn work to kill that economy and drive inequality such that the rich get much richer and the poor lose jobs and benefits.

We have a good economy right now. Between the horrible covid response and the huge corruption of the previous administration, President Biden inherited a very shaky economy. It was almost exactly the same when President Obama took over from a president who for all practical purposes disappeared his last year. Son of a gun, That’s what happened when President Clinton took over in 1993.

Biden will need help to sustain this economy. He will need Democrats like Christina Bohannan to help move needed legislation that will help people.

Meanwhile as we try to gaze into the future a little bit (my crystal ball never works really well) we see a MAGA Party that is coming apart at the seams. We see a party where at least half are now expressing some fealty to a man who is four time indicted, twice impeached and by many accounts the most corrupt politician ever in American history.

Half of the MAGA Party will support him and him only and the other half will never support him. So if you are an incumbent congress member which side do you choose? No matter which way you choose, you lose. From what it looks like Miller-Meeks is a Trumper. That begs the question of her judgment of people when she chooses the most corrupt politician ever.

It is sort of beginning to look like the MAGA Party will be openly infighting each other. If they turn Donald Trump out, he will not go quietly. If they don’t turn him out down ballot candidates will have to explain why their top of the ticket candidate is in court every day trying to explain away an attack on the seat of our government that appears to be driven by hid rhetoric.

On top of that down ballot candidates will have to try to convince the non-Trumpers to vote for them. As it looks from here Donald Trump, as the MAGA nominee or not, will be a huge albatross on every candidate for the MAGA Party. As I noted before, there will be daily reminders of what Trump did. A person just has to question the judgment anyone who ever supported Trump.

We can expect honest and heartfelt answers from Bohannan based on her life experiences and her empathy for the common Iowan.

We can’t expect honest answers from Miller-Meeks. She voted against the Inflation Reduction Act but tried to take credit for some public works. Her answers on abortion are cloaked in the “yeah, but” dodge. In reality expect her vote to be to take away women’s reproductive rights. Same with guns. She will say one thing but will be a solid vote for extremist positions on guns.

In short, you can trust Bohannan. Based on her years in congress we simply can’t trust what Miller-Meeks says, nor can we depend on her to do what is best for Iowans or the country. But we do know MAGA money will be flowing into the First District big time. Go to Bohannan’s web site and click on the donation button to help out.

Amie Rivers has a good report on Miller-Meeks’ first town hall in Iowa City last Monday on iowastartingline. Rivers unveils the ducking and dodging that Miller-Meeks did to avoid answering questions. What was really sad is to see that Miller-Meeks repeated the lie that Democrats allow abortions up till birth. It is a lie, I am sure she knows it is a lie. Lying to get votes is what MAGA candidates do including Miller-Meeks.

Will Iowa Follow Lead Of West Virginia?

(1:36)

What’s the next frontier for the slashers and burners in the Iowa State legislature to remake Iowa into the next Mississippi. If you nose around online sometimes you will see a hint at what may be the next goofball idea coming down the pipe that would fit the MAGA agenda of wrecking state institutions.

These ideas are passed down from the “think tanks” such as Heritage Foundation or “conservative” model legislation groups like ALEC who work non-stop 24 X 7 X 365 on ways to move money from the poor to the rich and turn the country into an oligarchy. Based on our current situation they are pretty successful.

Remember, Kim Reynolds did not originate ideas like the 6 week abortion ban, tax cuts for the wealthy, smashing unions, banning books or the most recent outrage taking money for public education and funneling it to private, religious schools that do not have to answer to any one. This law tears down a once proud public school system and replaces it with snake oil.

One of MAGA’s primary goals is to trash anything “public” that has been built over generations for the good of all and replace it with a privatized version that funnels money into a few hands while offering a product that is usually just a shadow of what the public version once was.

We are seeing this now in our K-12 schools. We have seen it in our parks, public housing, hospitals, in some states the prison system (I sure expect Iowa to move into privatized prisons soon), public water and other utilities, and in Iowa, Medicaid. MAGA thought: if it’s Public, let’s ruin it and let somebody make big bucks off it. Who cares if the middle class and poor can’t use it anymore?

Now it looks like the newest trend is to attack the public colleges, turning them into glorified job training centers and moving non-utilitarian courses off to private colleges and universities. West Virginia U. West Virginia U. is the latest university to be taken apart in the MAGAs fevered dream of destroying the public commons for their nirvana of privatized college

Below is a discussion from Professor Lisa M. Corrigan on The Nation magazine. This excerpt is from a non-paywall version of the article.

Last week, West Virginia University (WVU) announced a plan to raze some of its core programs. The public land-grant university intends to eliminate 9 percent of its majors (32 programs total), all of its foreign language programs, and 7 percent of its full-time faculty members (169 in total). The departments targeted for these massive cuts count Truman, Marshall, Fulbright, and Rhodes scholars among their alumni. These cuts were recommended by the consulting firm rpk GROUP, and there’s every reason to believe they’re a trial balloon for doing this elsewhere. Anyone who cares about higher education should be alarmed about what this portends for public universities.

These changes are the functional equivalent of an atomic bomb at WVU, and stand to make it increasingly difficult for the institution to meet its stated mission to create “a diverse and inclusive culture that advances education, healthcare and prosperity for all by providing access and opportunity.” So why is it doing this?

{skip}

Today, like many land-grant universities, WVU sits at the convergence of several cultural and economic tectonic shifts that are working in tandem to radically transform education. Foremost among these shifts is the changing economic climate of higher ed. WVU, like many higher-education institutions, has been plagued by gross financial mismanagement by administrators and consultants who have funneled money into massive administrative bloat and capital projects at the expense of faculty hires and support for faculty and graduate students. The university is currently facing a $45 million budget gap, and is seemingly uninterested in shrinking administrator salaries, creating artificial conditions for austerity.

{skip}

Meanwhile, higher education has become a major political target for the right. One only needs to look at the takeover of the New College of Florida (to name but one example of the GOP’s “war on woke”) to see how academic expertise has come under fire as a political wedge issue in this campaign season—while the GOP’s privatization program, perfected under Reagan, funnels public money into both tax cuts for the wealthy and various grifts. The book bans, censorship, purges of area studies programs, and targeting of academics at public institutions (particularly in the South) are all calculated to decrease the public’s confidence in public education so that it can be dismantled and replaced with private corporations, which lack regulation and oversight.

{skip}

The future of higher education looks bleak. {my bolding – ed.} Money will flow to elites in private schools, who will benefit from comprehensive language instruction, liberal arts, inclusive critical thinking skills, and a global curriculum, and thus have access to global careers in the arts, finance, diplomacy, national security, international business, international law, AI, and other fields. Students at state schools will receive the education that the oligarchs want them to, based on their largesse.

So who will it be when the Iowa Legislature and destroyer-in-chief Kim Reynolds takes the old meat ax to Iowa’s university system? Based on cuts over the years plus a barely disguised animosity MAGA legislators have for the U of Iowa and Johnson County, I feel safe in guessing that the U of Iowa will be the first ‘experiment’ in gutting one of the Iowa universities. But at some point if the MAGA Party stays in power, all of the schools will be gutted.

No Off-Years

Unknown parade during the John Kerry campaign in 2004.

The Johnson County Democrats created a political campaign called “No Off-Years.” In a recent email, State Senator Zach Wahls explained:

I’m reaching out to invite you to join our “No Off-Years” campaign – a movement that goes beyond the elections every two years and focuses on doing the important organizing work that will turn Iowa blue again.

Our democracy thrives when we, the people, are actively involved in shaping its path. It’s not just about rallying before elections – it’s about keeping our momentum going consistently. That’s the idea behind “No Off-Years.”

Traditionally, we’ve concentrated on election periods, but I believe Democrats and anyone who values progress must stay engaged throughout the year. We need to foster lasting change, build connections, and ensure our voices are heard, no matter the season.

Email from State Senator Zach Wahls, Aug. 16, 2023.

A local organizer from Solon, got down to brass tacks while promoting training for a September canvass:

This is the path forward to better governance in the state of Iowa. We need to knock on doors and talk to our neighbors about why we think it is important support democratic candidates and really turn out and vote in huge numbers.

Email from Seth Zimmerman, Aug. 14, 2023.

What I’m hearing is Democrats developed special messaging focused on identifying where voters are politically, and encouraging them to join the mainstream Democrats in turning out for the 2024 general election.

Whatever No Off-Years becomes, I support the effort unequivocally. So should readers.

My friends and I have been talking about how to support the effort. Our small coterie of the 70-plus crowd has been debating whether to walk turfs to knock on doors at all. If they do so, some need a walker and there are various kinds from which to choose. Our theory is if one is door-knocking with a walker, 1). a person can sit and rest when needed, and 2). we might get a few sympathy votes. Making phone calls to friends and neighbors makes more sense for us than knocking doors, although that has its issues. Our conclusion in numerous telephone conversations is the next generation needs to step up and manage most of the in-person part of this campaign.

It is important to note that the main purpose of pre-election canvassing is to target and identify potential voters for our candidates, then get them out to vote. I recall the first Obama campaign during the general election. Our neighborhood organizer had a well-annotated list of everyone in the neighborhood and crossed them off once they committed to voting for Obama or said they wouldn’t. As election day approached, we were able to assess each uncommitted person on the list and make a last-ditch effort to persuade them before the polls closed. We didn’t perceive this as rallying before the election, but rather dotting our i’s and crossing t’s to bring every possible voter to the polls.

Iowa Democrats have bottomed out in our election of candidates in federal, state and local races. There is a need to change that going forward if we want to be a viable party that attracts new people. The No Off-Years campaign is worth trying. After all doing nothing is a worse option.

Book Review: Presidents of War

The Mason City and Urbandale school districts have both been in the news because of their efforts to comply with the new Iowa law which restricts what school children can read in class or in the school library. While this is a specific initiative driven by a small number of conservative groups, it seems appropriate to ask what should adults be reading? I submit it is books like Michael Beschloss’ 2018 history Presidents of War.

Presidents of War is a history of the use of presidential power conducting our nation’s wars beginning with the War of 1812 through the Vietnam War. Beschloss points out repeatedly our war presidents did not closely follow the intention of the framers of the constitution or the words in the document. They took liberties to accomplish their various objectives, some of which were needed, some political, some deceptive, and some flat-out ill-advised. Even the revered Franklin Delano Roosevelt weighed political considerations in his conduct of World War II.

In his review on Gates Notes, Bill Gates brought home why the book is important:

The richest insights for me came from the fact that the book’s broad scope lets you draw important cross-cutting lessons about presidential leadership…

[…]

Beschloss didn’t unearth much new material about any of these wars. But looking at each president and each conflict with a similar lens is what makes the book a worthwhile read.

Gates Notes, Bill Gates, May 20, 2019.

The barrage of misinformation and outright lies in our daily lives is non-stop. The technique is to drop a factoid, then pivot to an argument that has a political or commercial point to make. The point often isn’t rational or based on the asserted fact. It is hard to believe folks will summarize the complexity of World War II , or any of our wars, in a brief social media post to perpetrate a lie. Yet they do. We should be able to agree to leave World War II out of the pitch to buy life insurance. If we can’t, society has bigger problems.

Beschloss spent more than a decade writing this book. In the acknowledgements he wrote parts of the book were 40 years in the making. The reason to read Presidents of War is it equips us to deal with misrepresentations and lies in social intercourse. “Those that fail to learn from history are doomed to repeat it,” Winston Churchill said in a 1948 speech in the House of Commons. By presenting historical truth in the book, Beschloss enables us to call foul when someone misrepresents it.

In our political discourse, we spend a lot of time assessing our presidents. Presidents of War, and others like it, give us incontrovertible information about which presidents messed up and which didn’t. We should consult such information before blurting things out about Joe Biden, Donald Trump, and others like a loose cannon.

One aspect of Michael Beschloss’ package is he is active on social media and a historical consultant to news organizations. Room Rater consistently gives him a 10/10 for his presentation of self in video commentary. I mean, those are not really credentials we used to consider. As a historian, he became a participant in popular culture and this contributes to the book being readable and understandable. Presidents of War demonstrates proficiency in historiography as well as being relatable.

School boards are banning books and that makes it important for parents to be active readers. If you wanted to start reading again, or just need a good next book, President of War would be a great starting place.
