STATEMENT: Reynolds Gives Heartless Response To Coronavirus

Governor calls for sick workers to stay home while Iowa law does not require paid sick days

Des Moines, Iowa — Progress Iowa executive director Matt Sinovic issued the following statement in response to Governor Reynolds calling on sick workers to stay home to prevent the spread of the Coronavirus, despite there being no requirement that employers offer paid sick leave:

“Governor Reynolds’ response to workers who are sick is absolutely heartless and does not acknowledge reality. If someone is sick on the job in our state, Reynolds is putting them in an impossible situation: either risk spreading disease by going to work, or risk their family’s financial future by staying home without a paycheck.”

“No one should be forced to make that decision. Governor Reynolds and the Republican controlled legislature have put the needs of working families dead last for too long, and they should act immediately to require employers to offer paid sick leave.”

Progress Iowa is a multi-issue progressive advocacy organization with a network of more than 75,000 progressives. Year-round, Progress Iowa advocates for a stronger middle class, first-class public education, and fairness for all Iowans under the law.

Tweet from Governor Reynolds – 2:51 PM, March 2, 2020

“As with all flu, remember to practice safe hygiene practices and if you are sick stay home from work!”

Iowa Workforce Development – Wage Frequently Asked Questions

“Are Iowa employers required to pay employees for sick time, vacation or holidays?”

“Employers must follow their own policies, practices or contracts regarding benefits. In  the absence of such an agreement, these benefits are not required.”

Reynolds response on the state level is bad enough, but the response that the current administration has put forward has been absolutely pathetic, scary and heartless. Not only do they have no clue what to do, they put a man in charge of the effort who had a similar situation as governor of Indiana and blew it big time.

On top of all that, the administration is currently in the middle of a lawsuit to bring down the ACA. This right at a  time when the ability to access health care will be most needed. If that isn’t enough the administration is calling for cuts in the “entitlement” programs – Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid. This was done through their budget proposals and also said right out loud by the current president in Scranton, Pennsylvania Thursday:

As if that wasn’t enough the administration reverts to its standard practice of blaming the Obama Administration for their (the Trump administration’s) problems:
