The Greatest Threat To American Health: Republicans

AARP om AHCA

AARP on ACHA after the House vote

Tax cuts for the wealthy much more important than the health of citizens.

America voted for this???

Many years ago while the ACA was still in the talking stage, I was able to attend a meeting with a staffer for Senator Harkin. It was an open meeting, but as these often go it was attended by only around 20 or so people.

If you remember at that time, health care had been a major topic in the election of 2008. Premiums were skyrocketing and coverage was being denied for the flimsiest of reasons. Even if a person had health insurance and had had insurance forever, it was not a given that the insurance company would cover an illness.

At the meeting I made the comment that if I were to have a heart attack in the middle of downtown, I would try to wave rescuers away. The staffer was astounded by my comment and asked why.

At the time I had some of that wonderful high-risk pool insurance. Very high deductible catastrophic insurance. Would it have covered a heart attack? Probably not. You get on high-risk insurance because you have pre-existing conditions, which insurance won’t cover. The old Catch-22 of the insurance industry. If you are past 50 most likely you have pre-existing conditions.

So I told her “If I were to survive the heart attack and end up in the hospital, most likely by the time I get out we will be broke. Starting life over from nothing at my age with a damaged heart would kill me slowly and painfully. Better I should just die and incur the cost of a funeral for my family.”

The staffer was stunned. She then asked the rest of the group if who else agreed with that. Every hand went up. She slowly then said “it is so bad in this country that death is seen as better than surviving because of the health insurance mess? Oh My God!”

You can bet some form of that message was being heard across the country. People were desperate and scared. Scared of the position their own government had put them in by allowing an industry (health insurance) to dictate laws in their favor to the detriment of the the vast majority of people.

While the ACA didn’t solve all the problems it was a start. And it moved the wolf away from the door for a few years. Apparently Republicans like having the wolf howling at the doors of those they don’t like – the poor, the working class, women – all but the wealthy.

So here we go again. Through gerrymandering, voter suppression, dark money and unverifiable electronic voting plus an assist from Vlad Putin and his band of intrepid hackers, Republicans have a majority in the House. Thursday they happily voted to return to the very bad days millions without insurance, emergency room health care and death in the street.

Today’s Republican party is doing far more damage to America than the bogeyman terrorists they trot out to instill fear in voters. Republicans instilled fear in at least 24 million households with their vote to substantially reduce access to health care. Sounds like terror to me. Bin Laden would be proud.

When I was either in the high risk pool or without health care, believe me I was scared. I knew that the only obstacle between the fear I felt and the access to healthcare that would alleviate that fear was the Republican Party. They have gotten much worse since that time only a decade ago.

Republicans will claim that pre-existing conditions will not be a reason for exclusion from insurance. Instead what will happen is those with pre-existing conditions will see their rates reach stratospheric levels or they will be shunted into “high-risk pools” with little funding from the government and policies with huge deductibles and co-pays. Kiss insurance good-bye if you are over 50.

One of the tricks in this one is to kick the handling of pre-existing conditions back to the states. Having seen what an overwhelming Republican legislature and governor can team up to do to the people of Iowa, can you imagine them deciding on pre-existing conditions? I doubt it would even get real consideration.

Now the focus for health care moves to the US Senate. Their is little secret that Iowa’s senators are hostile to the ACA. But we can’t go down without a fight.

Loebsack Statement on House Passage of Republicans’ Healthcare Repeal Bill

Image (2) Dave-Loebsack-Official-150x150.jpg for post 13241

Washington, May 4, 2017 | Joe Hand (202-225-6576) |

Congressman Dave Loebsack released the following statement today after House Republicans passed legislation that would repeal the ACA, putting in jeopardy the healthcare coverage of more than 171,000 Iowans and 24 million Americans. This legislation also opens the door to eliminating the guarantee that pre-existing conditions will be covered for 1.3 million Iowans.

“Today’s vote is the culmination of seven years of Republicans using healthcare as a political football rather than have an honest debate on making healthcare more affordable and accessible for all Iowans. When the ACA was passed, we closed the door on insurance companies being able to charge someone who has been sick whatever they want. This bill opens that door, leaving it possible that 1.3 million Iowans with pre-existing conditions like asthma, diabetes and cancer will be subject to higher payments or even the loss of coverage altogether.

“On top of all of that, this bill gives massive tax breaks to millionaires, billionaires and corporations, imposes an “age tax”, puts healthcare for seven million Veterans at risk and would mean an increase in out-of-pocket costs for children with disabilities. As always, I remain committed to fighting to ensure all Iowans have access to quality, affordable healthcare coverage.”

Voting For Health Care ‘Scam’ Defining Moment For David Young

Young’s vote for President Trump’s repeal of the Affordable Care Act threatens 1.2 million Iowans and 343,000 of his constituents with pre-existing conditions

DES MOINES — Congressman David Young today voted for President Trump’s American Health Care Act (AHCA), and the repeal of the Affordable Care Act provisions that protect more than 1.2 million Iowans, including 343,000 of his constituents with pre-existing medical conditions. Young’s vote in favor comes one day after constituents were reportedly told he would be opposed.

Young justified his vote after supporting an amendment described by the Washington Post as a ‘total scam’ and despite its addition the AHCA “still guts protections for people with preexisting conditions and rolls back health coverage for millions and millions of poor people.” Today’s vote occurred despite no concrete idea of the cost of the legislation, typically provided by the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO).

“Congressman Young’s vote for President Trump’s health care scam is a defining moment,” said Matt Sinovic, executive director of Progress Iowa. “Young will be remembered for threatening the health coverage of 1.2 million Iowans and 343,000 of his own constituents with pre-existing medical conditions. Young will be remembered for voting for a return to the days when being a sexual assault survivor means you can’t get health coverage. Young will be remembered for voting on legislation with no idea how much it will cost. And he’ll be remembered for telling his constituents one thing on Wednesday, and voting a different way Thursday.”

Congressmen Rod Blum and Steve King also voted in favor of the AHCA, which narrowly passed on a vote of 217-213, and now moves to the U.S. Senate for further consideration.

Attend A Resistance LinkUp!

DFA Resistance LinkupAction alert from DFA –

The 100-day mark of Trump’s administration has been filled with intense resistance from Democrats and DFA members every step of the way.

We’ve marched in support of women and science. We’ve fought Trump’s Muslim ban and his community-destroying border wall. Together, we stopped Trumpcare — and we’ve made Trump’s Republican allies terrified to hold town halls in their home districts.

These past 100 days have been both infuriating and energizing. But our resistance can’t be short term. We need to show Trump and the GOP that we’re in this for the long haul.

DFA members across the country — and right in your neighborhood — are gathering this week to strategize about what comes next for the resistance. Will you attend a DFA Resistance LinkUp in May to coordinate and share ideas with local DFA members?

Yes! I’d like to attend a DFA Resistance LinkUp near me.

No, I can’t make it this month, but I’ll chip in $3 or more to support DFA’s local grassroots organizing.

Here’s how our resistance is working to create long-term change:

Voters in Kansas, Georgia, Montana, and Virginia are proving every day that we have the power to translate the energy we’ve seen at marches and town hall meetings into votes on Election Day. Every election in 2017 is an opportunity to build on our momentum and send a strong message to Washington: We are organized, we are committed, and we are ready to take our country back.

At the same time, we’re building grassroots power to hold Democratic leaders to a high standard — and we’re letting them know that we won’t compromise our values to win elections.

We know our resistance to Donald Trump needs to keep growing and planning for the long term. But deciding what comes next for the resistance is really up to you. At DFA’s Resistance LinkUps, members are coming together to share updates, coordinate upcoming events and make plans for long-term action to fight Donald Trump and elect Democrats in all 50 states.

Will you help us keep the grassroots resistance to Trump going by participating in a DFA Resistance LinkUp near iowa city this month?

Yes! I will sign up to attend a DFA Resistance LinkUp.

No, I can’t attend, but I’ll pitch in $3 or more to help DFA build the resistance all across the country.

Thanks for supporting our DFA Resistance LinkUps. If you’ve signed up, don’t forget to bring your ideas, bring your energy, and most importantly — bring a friend!

20 Funniest Signs From The March For Science

Unfortunately we were unable to attend any of the Marches for Science last Saturday. There are only so many weekends in our lives and sometimes the family insists we get together.

Like many of our generation we fancy ourselves armchair scientists. My introduction to the wonders of science was having the local community pools shut down for fear that they were one of the possible places to be stricken with polio. Little struck fear into the hearts of parents like the word polio did in the late 40s and early 50s.

Then in 1952, Dr. Jonas Salk proved the viability of his inactivated polio virus and the country rejoiced. Somewhere in the next year or so, I and several million like me got a series of three shots. That stick in the arm was my introduction to science. Now we could swim and drink from water fountains and share a bottle of pop with a friend.

Science marched forward from there both for good and for bad. As we have explored more and more deeply into space, so has science come up with more and more efficient ways for man to kill his fellow man.

We look at the bright side of science, however. We still believe that there is enough time for us to save our species and others from the cataclysmic climate changes coming. Sadly our current batch of leaders seem much more concerned about making a buck than worrying about humanity and life in general.

So the huge turnout around the country was heartening. It at least helps to focus attention on the problem. I hope there will be many more Marches For Science. This should happen every couple of months.

Humor is one of the best ways to highlight problems. In that vein, I direct you to this website for a slideshow of some of the more humorous signs from last Saturday.

And here are a few more for good measure. Scientists do have a very understated sense of humor:

Sunday Funday: Happy Beltane Edition

In honor of the Marches for Climate yesterday

May 1st holds some significance in nearly every culture in the northern hemisphere. Most likely this is because spring is getting warmer. Crops are being planted and even in ancient times there was a reasonable expectation that those crops would have weather that would allow them to grow and prosper.

May 1 is the celebration of Beltane in ancient pagan cultures. This was a time for pasturing the cattle and gathering flowers. Celebrations were held in hopes of good crops.

Now May 1st is a celebration of workers around the world, except in the US. Therefore we will sprinkle in a few labor questions. In the US the weekend around May 1 is often workers Memorial day.

One could note here that Republicans in the Iowa legislature open hate for workers appears to be among the forerunners in trying to return labor relations to the 1880s.

Were you paying attention?

1) First daughter Ivanka Trump was booed in Berlin, Germany for claiming her father was what?

2) When the going gets tough, the tough get going. As the noose seems to be tightening around Michael Flynn, what congressman took a leave of absence to repair surgery from 12 years back on his foot?

3) California farmers are facing a major shortage of what due to admin distortion policies?

4) May 4th, 1886 what incident occurred in Chicago that was one of the most momentous in labor history?

5) The administration named Charmaine Yoest to the top communication post at HHS Friday. Yoest is best known as an opponent of what?

6) Questions are arising concerning money raised for what administration event earlier this year?

7) Road trip! US senators were bussed to what location for a meeting concerning North Korea?

8) What senator skipped the event saying “I did not want to be part of a photo-op.”?

9) The administration delivered their tax plan. The plan was how many pages long?

10) Under the administration tax plan, corporate taxes would be reduced from the nominal 35% to what percentage?

11) May 1 is the birthday of what 19th and early 20th century labor leader? Hint: her name is the namesake for a current liberal monthly magazine.

12) Robert Pirsig died this week. He was the author of what widely read philosophical work in the 1970s?

13) France had its first pass at electing their president last Sunday. Can you name the two survivors?

14) In Iowa, the governor called Democratic criticism of a $150,000 transition budget to a Reynolds administration what?

15) What US city began removal of four monument dedicated to the “Lost Cause of the Confederacy”?

16) A gubernatorial candidate in what state took exception to the aforementioned statue removal claiming “It looks like ISIS has won!”?

17) Getting tough with our enemies, the administration imposed a 20% duty on lumber from what country?

18) What company is suing talk radio hater Alex Jones for claiming it supports “migrant rapists”?

19) In Sussex County, England a extremely rare copy of what important document was found in their records office?

20) In their latest proposal to end the ACA, Republicans in congress wanted to exempt what group from losing the pre-existing condition exemption in the current law?

21) Bonus – who did the administration blame their failure to vet Gen. Michael Flynn on?

BTW – it seems the GDP for the first quarter is down a bit. May be time to attack North Korea.

Answers:

1) “a champion of women’s rights”

2) Jason Chaffetz of Utah. Rumor is he took money from Russians also.

3) farm workers

4) The Haymarket incident aka the Haymarket riot

5) abortion.

6) the inauguration. Many questions about donors and spending following the filing of reports the other day

7) the White House

8) Bernie Sanders

9) less than one

10) 15% and would still include loopholes. Thus the effective rate would probably be near 0.

11) Mary Harris “Mother” Jones.

12) “Zen and The Art Of Motorcycle Maintenance”

13) Extreme right winger Marine Le Pen and Emmanuel Macron

14) “sexist” – really grasping there, Terry

15) New Orleans

16) Virginia (Corey Stewart is the candidate)

17) Canada – what?

18) Chobani

19) the Declaration of Independence

20) members of congress

21) Obama – cause everything is Obama’s fault

Democrats are holding fundraisers around the state. Join in and help return sanity to Iowa.
