Will Reynolds Join Indiana’s Republican Governor, And Back Schools On Mask Mandates?

Republican Gov. Holcomb describes mask mandates as “wise” while Reynolds gaslights her constituents; Progress Iowa calls on Governor to reverse decision before children are put in danger

Des Moines, Iowa — As the school year approaches and parents worry about spiking COVID-19 cases in Iowa and across the country, the Republican Governor of Indiana is putting politics aside and continuing to empower schools to determine whether to mandate masks.

Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds has stripped away similar decision making power from school districts, and has even publicly disputed whether masks are an effective mitigation measure, despite widespread scientific evidence to the contrary.

“Iowa parents want our kids to go to school safely, and we want our local districts to have the authority to make safe decisions about our schools,” said Matt Sinovic, executive director of Progress Iowa. “Governor Reynolds has turned COVID into a political power grab, instead of putting the needs of students first. It is time for her to reverse this disastrous decision before kids are put in harm’s way when school starts.”

As the delta variant has taken hold, COVID-19 cases have risen across the state of Iowa. In Indiana, cases in K-12 schools were four times higher this week than last, according to Indiana Department of Health figures cited by the Associated Press. And in North Carolina, Ohio, and Florida, cases are all rising as students return for the school year.

The increase in cases and protests from parents has not budged Governor Reynolds, who has claimed she doesn’t know whether masks work, saying “I’m not a scientist,” all while making the decision herself for every school district whether to require masks. {ed. note: bolding mine}

“The Governor is right, she’s not a scientist, and she’s certainly not an educator,” said Sinovic. “She needs to get out of the way and let local school districts make public health decisions based on advice from actual medical professionals. Not politicians who want to score cheap points with the health of our kids.”

First Of A Couple Of Short Videos On Covid

These will be posted separately since posting videos together can cause loading to stall.

The first video is a 30 second video put out by the Australian government on the reality of suffering with Covid:

As Thom Hartmann described it one day, it is drowning in your own snot. A hell of a way to die. Especially when it is preventable.

Preventable. Don’t forget that. Get vaccinated!

Finkenauer Gets Personal

Abby Finkenauer is ready to stand up and fight.

Former Congresswoman Abby Finkenauer (D-IA-01) made an appearance on Nicole Wallace’s Deadline White House Thursday. Finkenauer talked about her candidacy to unseat Republican Senator Charles Grassley and why it is personal to her.  Deeply offended by Grassley’s minimizing and denial of the January 6 insurrection she is making it the cornerstone of her campaign.  Watch the video. Then check out her campaign website at abbyfinkenauer.com/

The Pandemic Of The Unvaccinated

“The delta variant is more contagious, more severe, and more vaccine penetrant. – Dr. Eric Feigl-Ding

This new delta trouble could have been circumvented if people would have gotten the vaccine when they became eligible. The variants had too much time to mutate because of the high numbers of unvaccinated individuals.

As far as those who haven’t been vaccinated I blame right wing media for 30 years of brainwashing. But I have to also say we should stop coddling those among us who are keeping the pandemic going. There should be consequences for this behavior.  So to everyone who has not been vaccinated, unless there is a medical reason, there really is no excuse for continuing to be a vessel for the coronavirus spread. So please just get the shot.

Wellmark’s Proposed Rate Increase Could Affect 60,000 Iowans

Action alert from Iowa Citizens for Community Improvement (CCI) Tell the Iowa Insurance Division: say “NO” to Wellmark’s premium increase

Despite solid revenues during the COVID-19 pandemic, Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield is proposing upwards of a 21% premium increase for their ACA individual plans for 2022. These skyrocketing increases impact nearly 60,000 Iowans who rely on these plans.

Enough is enough. Everyday Iowans deserve access to care when and where we need it without exorbitant premiums and, too often, denials of needed care and treatment.

Wellmark can and should do better, but they’ve asked the state to accept this rate increase. Now it’s up to the Iowa Insurance Division to step in and deny their proposed premium increase.

The Iowa Insurance Division is accepting public comments on Wellmark’s rate-hike proposal in advance of their August 28 public hearing.

Iowa Insurance Division Commissioner Doug Ommen has a choice to make: He can allow another double-digit increase (while we still deal with the effects of a global pandemic), or stand with everyday Iowans and deny Wellmark’s premium increase.

Take a minute to submit a public comment to the Insurance Division and urge them to deny Wellmark’s proposed increase.

How Workers Can Reclaim Power

The following is a short (6 minute) video by Robert Reich. Reich is the former Secretary of Labor under President Clinton. He may be optimistic,  but he always brings up great points:

Labor was once the very backbone of the Democratic Party. They should still be. The Democratic Party is certainly the only major party in the US that works for labor issues.

Why a worker would ever vote for a Republican is a mystery. Republicans use their power to decimate workers.

In a similar vein, why would a small business person vote for a Republican when Republican policy is geared to helping the giant businesses crush small business?

Sunday Funday: Breakfast Edition

From CNN comes this story:

If you visit an IHOP in the not-too-distant future, chances are you may encounter some unexpected menu items that weren’t available before: beer, wine and bubbly.

That’s because for the first time, IHOP is offering its franchisees, which run the vast majority of IHOP restaurants, the chance to add an alcohol menu devised by the company.

A handful of IHOP franchises have already been selling alcohol. But previously it was on them to select the menu and launch the new offerings.

On the company’s new menu: Bud Light, Blue Moon and Corona beers, as well as Barefoot Bubbly Brut, Barefoot Bubbly Chardonnay and Barefoot Cabernet Sauvignon. Some locations may have local offerings, as well. Hard liquor is not on the menu to avoid making IHOP, a family restaurant, feel like a bar.

What beer goes best with pancakes for breakfast? Been a long time since I had that mix back in the old college days.

And Iowa will be doing a social experiment as it mixes potential super spreader events The Field of Dreams and the State Fair just before the start of school where disease is often easily passed during the first couple of weeks. Please, please, please wear masks and get vaxxed!
