Remember waaaay back to two weeks ago when the current president decided to try to divert attention from the upcoming Mueller testimony by singling out four Democratic congress women and claiming they were un-American? In terms of news these days this is almost ancient.
The charges the current president leveled at those congresswomen were that they were un-American based on some criteria that the current president invented in his own head and that his “base” takes at his word. Essentially their sins were: 1) they are the wrong party 2) they are the wrong color and 3) they may be what the current president consider an unacceptable religion and 4) they criticized the current president. Points 1) and 2) were all that was needed to be damning for the congresswomen in the eyes of the current president and his base.
However, under what would be a a more normal definition of what it takes to be un-American, these congresswomen exhibited none of what was once considered to be un-American beliefs or activities. According to the constitution, color of skin cannot be considered for citizenship, we can hold whatever beliefs we want concerning politics or religion and based on the first amendment we can criticize the government without retribution.
Things become un-American when someone acts in some way to overthrow the legally elected government. The congresswomen engaged in none of that. However, based on the Mueller Report and the testimony by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, un-American activity was engaged in. That activity was engaged in by the current president and his campaign and subsequently his administration.
Adam Schiff’s opening statement (7 minutes): (note: in the last minute Schiff discusses known planned interference in future elections)
Schiff’s questions Mueller (5 minutes):
Thus the current president tries to divert attention from his own un-American activities by claiming others were committing un-American acts. His campaign and his administration’s cover-up following his inauguration have been for the purpose of undermining our elections and our system of government. As far as we can tell the motivating factors in undermining our elections and our system of government was for his own personal gain and possibly for helping a foreign power get favors from his administration.
That is about as bad as it can get. However, the current president on his own could not have pulled off such a massive swindle. When the FBI and other intelligence agencies notified President Obama of possible Russian interference in the 2016 election, Obama’s hands were tied from doing much about it by Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell.
Joe Biden said Tuesday that Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell stopped the Obama administration from speaking out about Russian interference in the 2016 campaign by refusing to sign on to a bipartisan statement of condemnation.
That moment, the former Democratic vice president said, made him think “the die had been cast … this was all about the political play.”
Fast forward 3 years and we have nearly the same warnings coming from intelligence agencies once again. Legislation to secure our elections in 20 20 were blocked from being introduced in the Senate immediately after Mueller’s testimony Wednesday. Want to guess who is doing the blocking?
While Mitch McConnell plays a huge part in undermining our elections, he wouldn’t be able to if he didn’t have a complicit army of soldiers known as Republican senators who elected him leader and who back his every step. This is not new. Think about the nomination of Merrick Garland to the Supreme Court and McConnell’s play to refuse a hearing for Garland. Grassley was right by his side through the whole process.
Somewhat of lesser involvement, but still critical to undermining the integrity of our elections is the purging of voting rolls and the use of “black-box” voting machines which have no paper trail to audit against. Just in case you may think that voting machines are secure, let me remind you of this story from about a year ago: Seems an 11 year old girl hacked a replica of the Florida Secretary of State’s website and change votes in about 10 minutes.
“Nico Sell, the co-founder of the the non-profit r00tz Asylum, which teaches children how to become hackers and helped organize the event, said an 11-year-old girl also managed to make changes to the same Florida replica website in about 15 minutes, tripling the number of votes found there.”
In the case of purging voters, in two of the critical states that ended up in the Trump column in 2016 saw votes in Democratic precincts hugely depressed by suppression laws. In Milwaukee some 41,000 lost votes were blamed on suppression. Detroit had more than 70,000 votes not counted with more than 80 voting machines malfunctioning. Like Milwaukee, the votes not counted were mostly in Democratic districts.
One other thing that Mueller noted in his testimony is that once the current president is no longer president he can be held liable for crimes committed in his campaign and during his presidency. However, the clock on the statute of limitations is ticking on the time to indict Trump. This is a HUGE added incentive for Trump and his sidekick, McConnell to do all they can to undermine elections once again.
