GOP 2012 Campaign Strategy: Ruin The Economy

by Dave Bradley

Some reading for the Fourth of July.

As for me, there are but two holidays that count in the calendar year – the Fourth of July and whatever you want to celebrate at the winter solstice. As we approach the Fourth, it is easy to see that the USA is not what many of us grew up in and certainly not what we expected it to be at this point.

Republicans continue to do all and anything they can to ruin the economy as a campaign weapon. Their logic is that a poor economy will be blamed on the sitting president.

The Republican politicians are getting a great amount of help from their allies in the business world. Mother Jones recently had a series of charts which rather astounded me as to how badly American workers are being screwed. You can find charts here

One chart in particular illustrates that corporations are hiring, just not in America where they are letting people go. Yet they expect us to purchase their products without question. Corporations have no loyalty either to individuals or countries:

A second reading comes from one of Iowa’s most famous sons, former Vice-President Henry Wallace. Like many of his day, Wallace was concerned about fascism making inroads in the US.

When you read this you may be somewhat taken by what Wallace perceived as threats and what is happening today with extremist politics on the right. Here are a couple of excerpts:

“A fascist is one whose lust for money or power is combined with such an intensity of intolerance toward those of other races, parties, classes, religions, cultures, regions or nations as to make him ruthless in his use of deceit or violence to attain his ends. The supreme god of a fascist, to which his ends are directed, may be money or power; may be a race or a class; may be a military, clique or an economic group; or may be a culture, religion, or a political party.”

“Still another danger is represented by those who, paying lip service to democracy and the common welfare, in their insatiable greed for money and the power which money gives, do not hesitate surreptitiously to evade the laws designed to safeguard the public from monopolistic extortion.”

“The American fascists are most easily recognized by their deliberate perversion of truth and fact. Their newspapers and propaganda carefully cultivate every fissure of disunity, every crack in the common front against fascism. They use every opportunity to impugn democracy. They use isolationism as a slogan to conceal their own selfish imperialism. They cultivate hate and distrust of both Britain and Russia. They claim to be super-patriots, but they would destroy every liberty guaranteed by the Constitution. They demand free enterprise, but are the spokesmen for monopoly and vested interest. Their final objective toward which all their deceit is directed is to capture political power so that, using the power of the state and the power of the market simultaneously, they may keep the common man in eternal subjection.”

One more thing – major kudos to the state of New York on their passage of marriage equality. Now, of course, they will see a champion of hate rise through the slime just like Bob Vander Plaats did here. The Vander Plaats of the world illustrate how precious freedom is.
