STATEMENT: The Trump Administration Is Putting An Anti-Vax Quack Scientist and Fake Doctor In Charge of “Researching” Long-Debunked Claims That Vaccines Cause Autism

Paging Dr. Cassidy: Republicans Who Bought What RFK Jr. Was Selling Will Bear Responsibility For More Sick and Dead Americans.

Donald Trump and RFK Jr. just took their boldest step yet to push their anti-vaccine agenda. According to reports, David Geier, a discredited researcher and vaccine skeptic, will lead a Department of Health and Human Services study into the debunked claim that vaccines cause autism. The Maryland State Board of Physicians disciplined Geier for practicing without a medical license, as he had been improperly diagnosing and treating children with autism. A vocal anti-vaccine conspiracy theorist, Geier’s protocols included Lupron, a hormone suppressor used for prostate cancer, precocious puberty, and to chemically castrate sex offenders. In addition, similar to RFK Jr., Geier has participated in anti-vaccine litigation against the federal government.

Geier’s disproven claims align with Health and Human Services Secretary RFK Jr.’s absurd views on immunizations. During RFK’s confirmation process, he gave “assurances” to Senator Bill Cassidy (R-LA) that he would trust the science, but he immediately walked it all back when he got confirmed to lead HHS, ramping up his efforts to fuel disinformation and conspiracy theories about vaccines.

In response, Protect Our Care Chair Leslie Dach issued the following statement:

“Senator Cassidy got played. After saying anything to Cassidy and other on-the-fence senators to get confirmed, RFK Jr. is escalating his efforts to undermine lifesaving vaccine access for the American people. David Geier is a quack who has previously been caught practicing medicine without a license, and now he is leading an HHS study on the dangerous, debunked claim that vaccines cause autism – all thanks to Senator Cassidy’s key vote. RFK Jr. and Donald Trump don’t care about children getting sick and dying from long-eradicated diseases.”

Washington Post: Vaccine Skeptic Hired to Head Federal Study of Immunizations and Autism

By Lena H. Sun and Fenit Nirappil // March 26, 2025

A vaccine skeptic who has long promoted false claims about the connection between immunizations and autism has been tapped by the federal government to conduct a critical study of possible links between the two, according to current and former federal health officials.

The Department of Health and Human Services has hired David Geier to conduct the analysis, according to the officials, who spoke on the condition of anonymity for fear of retaliation. Geier and his father, Mark Geier, have published papers claiming vaccines increase the risk of autism, a theory that has been studied for decades and scientifically debunked.

David Geier was disciplined by Maryland regulators more than a decade ago for practicing medicine without a license. He is listed as a data analyst in the HHS employee directory.

Public health and autism experts fear that choosing a researcher who has promoted false claims will produce a flawed study with far-reaching consequences. They fear it will undermine the importance of the lifesaving inoculations and further damage trust in the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. The government’s premier public health agency has stressed vaccination as the safest and most effective measure to control the spread of some contagious diseases, including the growing measles outbreak in Texas and New Mexico.

“It seems the goal of this administration is to prove that vaccines cause autism, even though they don’t,” said Alison Singer, president of the Autism Science Foundation, a nonprofit organization that funds autism research. “They are starting with the conclusion and looking to prove it. That’s not how science is done.”

President Donald Trump and HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. have repeatedly linked vaccines to autism. Kennedy has often cited studies by David Geier and his father, a physician, asserting that their research reveals the negative effects of vaccines.

David Geier said in a brief telephone interview Tuesday he had no comment about whether he has a role in the study, how he was hired, and whether he holds the same views about vaccines and autism as described in his previous research.

“I don’t have any comment to say,” he said. “Talk to the secretary. He’s the person that’s in charge.”

HHS and CDC officials did not respond to emails requesting comment.

Jessica Steier, a public health researcher who leads the nonprofit Science Literacy Lab that scrutinizes research on high-profile health topics, said that the Geiers’ research is riddled with basic flaws and that the pair have “demonstrated patterns of an anti-vaccine agenda.”

“This is a worst-case scenario for public health,” Steier said. “It’s a slap in the face to the decades of actual credible research we have.”

HHS instructed the CDC in early March to conduct the vaccine-autism study. The request came two days after Trump, in an address to a joint session to Congress, described the growing prevalence of autism in American children.

But in recent weeks, HHS officials directed the CDC to turn over vaccine safety data to the National Institutes of Health so that agency could conduct the analysis instead, according to three current and one former federal health officials. Geier was identified as the person who “would be the one analyzing the data,” said one official.

It’s unclear why HHS officials turned to NIH to conduct the study. Kennedy, a longtime anti-vaccine activist, has long criticized the CDC and, in particular, vaccine safety.

During Kennedy’s confirmation hearings, Sen. Bill Cassidy (R-Louisiana) pressed Kennedy to publicly disavow his past claims about vaccines and autism. Kennedy replied he would do so if presented with data disproving the link, despite the overwhelming body of research that already does.

The information that the CDC has turned over to NIH includes the underlying data from four studies on vaccines and autism published in the 2000s, three current officials said. None of the papers found any link.

Nor have more than two dozen other studies, including a decade-long study of a half-million children in Denmark published in 2019. It showed the measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine does not increase the risk of autism, lending strong statistical evidence to what was already medical consensus.

Peter Hotez, co-director of the Center for Vaccine Development at Texas Children’s Hospital and author of a book about his daughter’s autism, said the federal government should focus money and attention on the roles of genetics and early brain development in the condition.

Instead, Hotez said, the agencies are repurposing scarce research dollars that leave “all the oxygen sucked out of the room over phony autism links.”

It’s not clear how or why Geier, who is not a physician and has an undergraduate degree from the University of Maryland at Baltimore County, was chosen.

Since the 2000s, the Geiers published some studies suggesting a link between thimerosal, a mercury-containing preservative in vaccines that drew public concern, and autism. The preservative had largely been excised from childhood vaccines by 2001.

The journal Science and Engineering Ethics retracted a 2015 paper co-authored by the Geiers that contended public health officials have conflicts of interest in studying whether mercury exposure triggers autism. The journal cited errors and failures to disclose the authors’ own conflicts of interest, including the Geiers’ involvement in a mercury-free-drugs coalition.

In a 2015 interview at a gathering of AutismOne, an organization that promotes the discredited link between vaccines and the condition, David Geier described CDC research on vaccines as compromised. He said the federal government sees its role as increasing vaccine uptake and quashing research that undermines immunization.

“This seems to be ubiquitous, that the government scientists are assigned to do a study, and invariably they find harm,” he said.

In addition to conducting research, Geier helped people who claimed injuries from vaccines seek compensation from the federal government and co-founded an organization that sued federal health officials, alleging harm from the use of thimerosal.

He was charged with practicing medicine without a license in May 2011, just weeks after his father’s license was suspended for allegedly putting autistic children at risk.

The Maryland Board of Physicians said Geier worked with his father using a hormonal drug therapy for prostate cancer and early-onset puberty to treat autistic children. Autism experts say the treatment is unproven and based on the debunked link to mercury in vaccines.

Mark Geier did not respond to a request for comment. An attorney for the Geiers said in 2011 that the treatment may be considered “crazy” but works on especially difficult patients.

The regulators said David Geier improperly played a role in the medical care, and parents assumed he was a doctor. Geier contended his role was administrative.

Then-Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley (D) ousted Geier from a state commission on autism in 2011, saying he was not qualified to serve as a “diagnostician” on the panel.

The Geiers later sued state officials for publicly disclosing private medical information about the family, alleging they did so to embarrass them. A judge sided with the Geiers and ordered officials at the Board of Physicians to pay them millions, but an appellate court overturned the penalties.

In recent years, David and Mark Geier have targeted the use of mercury-containing amalgam fillings in dental care and promoted removal of those fillings.

The American Dental Association says dental amalgam is durable, safe and effective, and removing the fillings to replace them with materials that do not contain mercury is “unwarranted.” In recently published papers about dental amalgams, the Geiers disclosed owning shares in a company developing treatments for “mercury intoxication.” The company is led by a proponent of the claim that vaccines cause autism.

In interviews in 2022, the Geiers described their focus on mercury in dental fillings as a natural outgrowth of their examination of mercury in vaccines.

Sunday Funday: Left Out Of The Loop Edition

The things they forget to tell Stinky Pants.

1 minute 25 seconds

Stinky Pants also did not know about the military strike in Yemen that Drunken Petey carried out. So, is Elon running things while Stinky cheats at golf all day? Sadly Iowans know their representatives in congress won’t do a damn thing about it because there is not one lumbar amongst the lot of them.

Don’t forget to stand up next week and join in the massive nationwide “Hands Off!” Protests. A list of Iowa events should be just down the page.

How do you like watching the world’s greatest democracy fall apart right in front of your eyes?

A) What Fun! Usha and her VP hubby are visiting what foreign land this weekend? (Are they leading the expeditionary force?)

B) Jeff Goldberg? Who the hell is Jeff Goldberg?

C) Stinky Pants will up the White House Easter egg roll by doing what this year?

D) Probably foreshadowing the sell off of the USPS, who resigned as Postmaster General last Saturday?

E) What company is looking like they may be exempted from cancer lawsuits in Iowa by the state legislature?

F) What company was hit with a $2 Billion verdict in a cancer decision handed down in Georgia last week?

G) The CO2 readings at Mauna Loa have been hovering near what PPM readings most of this year?

H) Canadian PM Carney called for snap elections last Sunday. Perhaps the central issue will be Canada’s relation to what?

I) In that campaign, challenger Pierre Poilievre has already called for defunding what national institution in that country?

J) Well, Here is a heck of a deal! What Stinky Pants’ spiritual advisor is offering “7 supernatural blessings (including Gawd going after your enemies)” for only $1,000?

K) The democrats won another special state legislative race in a deeply red district in what state last Tuesday?

L) Who is Iowa’s new head men’s basketball coach?

M) What US professor and expert on fascism announced he would be moving to Canada?

N) What genetic analysis business announced its bankruptcy last week?

O) Stinky Pants ordered his VP to remove “improper ideology” at what US historical institution?

P) According to MAGAs the country is broke. Yet their leader, Stinky Pants, is talking of setting up a compensation program for what group of people?

Q) Toxic liver disease is breaking out in West Texas children are taking too much Vitamin A due to comments made by what administration leader?

R) Does being governor of South Dakota pay that well? New Secretary of Homeland Security made an appearance at the US holding prison in El Salvador wearing what outrageous jewelry?

S) Why did the Signal group use this unauthorized method of communications (Signal) rather than the authorized government channels?

T) Your Iowa legislature at work? Public schools could do what 2 religious oriented actions if bills in the legislature are passed into laws?

Nothing “OwNs ThE LiBs” quite like crashing the economy and leaking war plans. Next up: stealing Granny’s social security check.

Tip of the hat to democraticunderground.com

Answers:

A) Greenland!

B) Goldberg is the editor at the Atlantic Monthly magazine who was accidentally(?) put in the Signal group and reported on it

C) Having it sponsored and making a few bucks on them kids!

D) Louis DeJoy

E) Bayer

F) Bayer

G) 430. Remember the do not pass number is 350 ppm

H) The U.S. and especially president Stinky Pants

I) The CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Company) almost sounds like MAGAs going after PBS and NPR

J) Paula White. Pretty decent price for a good smiting

K) Pennsylvania – two big special elections in Florida Tuesday

L) Ben McCollum moves over from Drake to head up the program

M) Timothy Snyder

N) 23andMe

R) a $50,000+ Rollex watch

S) So they wouldn’t have to abide by records keeping laws

T) Hire ‘chaplains’ and teach bible study. The Church of Satan has offered to provide chaplains

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room:  Project 2025 calls for using public channels of communication (like Signal) instead of secure government channels, to subvert FOIA requests and conceal damning information from the public. This was no rookie mistake. It’s the plan. – Puk Arks

Hey, Joni! About That Hegseth Vote

(5:30)

Couple of months ago, Joni Ernst, who was the poster child for women in the military, made a very calculated vote to confirm Fox part-timer cos-player Pete Hegseth as the worst person ever to be Secretary of Defense. Hegseth may be the worst cabinet secretary of any stripe ever, but certainly by far the worst Secretary of Defense.

I have no doubt that Ernst understood that Hegseth was the worst ever, but made a pact with the devil to stave off a primary from the MAGA maniacs in charge of what used to be the Republican Party in 2026. Ernst was basically the vote that put Hegseth in the Secretary’s seat.

Ernst better be putting her spinmeisters to work trying to explain why she voted for a person who is so disqualified to be Secretary of Defense that he put and is putting the country’s security in danger everyday he continues on the job. The fact that Hegseth put our country and its soldiers in jeopardy has been proven by Atlantic journalist Jeff Goldberg and his stories with screen shots concerning the attack in Yemen.

When is your next town hall, Joni? Lots of Iowans can hardly wait to hear your stories. You have made your reputation on your support for women, yet you vote for a womanizer. You made your reputation on your knowledge of the military, yet you vote for the worst possible person for Secretary of Defense. In both cases that vote was for Pete Hegseth.

Thus in one fell swoop you trashed any integrity, any reputation of good judgment you ever had. You can no longer be trusted – as if you ever really should have been trusted. Given an opportunity to do the right thing – vote against a person who had multiple warning signs flashing – you decided to cast a vote that was calculated to keep you in office and keep you in Trump’s good graces.

You should have thought of your country first and foremost, and not you party first. You had a chance. The choice was pretty stark. You chose party first, country last. You should resign and make the statement that your lack of good judgment makes you unfit for office.

I am sure Iowans won’t forget this. We will do what we can to remind them before the next election.

In 2022 Iowans had an opportunity to elect a person with demonstrated excellent judgment in Michael Franken. I have no idea if Admiral Franken is exploring another run, but contrasting his good judgment with your party-first judgment would be very striking.

So thanks for putting your country in danger with your bad judgment, Joni. Let’s hope Iowans remind you throughout your campaign of this and all the ways you have helped Musk and Trump wreck a great country.

Remember Tammy Duckworth? She is the senator from Illinois who lost her legs as aa helicopter pilot in Iraq. People like her are the ones who pay the price for the idiocy of people like Pete Hegseth. Here isTammy Duckworth’s reaction to the Hegseth treason(?):

Thom Hartmann On America’s Trump Tragedy

Here is an excerpt from Thom Hartmann’s most righteous rant, leaving nothing out about the Republican party’s historical sins – none comparing to Trumpism.  Can’t post the whole article here but the entire rant is required reading.  Check it out on Substack.

submitted by Molly Regan

Dear GOP: You’ll Never Wash the Stench of Trump Off You or Your Party. Never.

No matter how hard you try, the world won’t forget. The lies, the corruption, and the betrayal are etched into history, a stain that will follow your party for generations…

After the corruption of the Coolidge and Hoover administrations crashed the world economy, kicking off the Republican Great Depression in 1929, it took your party decades to rid itself of the stink…

After Nixon committed treason to extend the Vietnam War to get himself re-elected, unnecessarily killing over 20,000 American soldiers and a million Vietnamese civilians, and then got busted for Watergate and the bribes he solicited in the White House, it took you almost a generation to rid yourselves of the stink…

But you’ll never rid yourself of the stink of Donald Trump, America’s first convicted felon and accused rapist president. At least never in the lifetime of anybody around today. Trump’s stench is a tragic part of American history that will last generations.

###

Be sure and listen to the song.

“Engaged Citizens And Principled Leaders”

Elissa Slotkin delivered the Democratic response to DT’s SOTU address. I didn’t watch at the time, but Simon Rosenberg of Hopium Chronicles whose political opinions I greatly respect has mentioned on several occasions what a remarkable speech it was. It’s only 10 minutes long but she packs a lot into an efficient yet still inspiring and pragmatic speech.  Let’s go, Democrats!

A couple of snippets:

“Trump sees American leadership as merely a series of real estate transactions.

“Don’t for one minute fool yourself and think that democracy isn’t precious and worth saving.”

“Pick one issue you’re passionate about and engage. And doom scrolling doesn’t count. Join a group.”

“”We’ve gone through periods of political instability before and ultimately we’ve chosen to keep changing this country for the better. But every single time we’ve only gotten through those moments because of two things: engaged citizens and principled leaders.

Grassley At Town Hall: Trump Is “Not Above The Law”

You’ve probably seen several so-called “highlight” videos of what happened at Senator Grassley’s Hampton town hall last Friday including these I posted here.  The internet likes short videos, reels and memes.  This is part of the problem of getting our news from the internet, whatever platform you follow, instead of newspapers.

Highlights are useful. But often, viewing a few “highlights” can cause one to think that whatever is in the highlight is the most important thing that occurred. So we think we don’t need to watch the entire event. But often I have found that highlights, like movie trailers, are the least interesting and sometimes least important thing that happened.

As much as possible we should try to get information directly by seeing it with our own eyes and ears rather than trusting media to tell us what the most important or interesting thing was, including internet sources that are trustworthy.

I’m not knocking regular news organizations and progressive media.  Click bait and short attention spans are a real thing and we all operate according to the current landscape rules and practices, and that means short and catchy.

It still remains that some of the best and most newsworthy moments can be seen only by watching an entire event rather than a short highlight.  For example, congressional hearings, speeches, town halls.  The Grassley town hall is a great example of this and credit to The Des Moines Register for recording and posting the entire official event on YouTube. Please support newspapers!

In the Grassley town hall, several exchanges stick in my mind as significant. These conversations between constituents and Senator Grassley took a little longer than what would fit in a short video reel, but in my view were major news moments that have so far gone unreported, at least in my sphere of information.

  • A retired educator asked Grassley if he knew what his oath of office says. Grassley said he couldn’t recall it.  Shouldn’t this be headline news?  Particularly in our current situation?  I haven’t seen it being reported. Please let me know if you have.  She then reads the oath of office to Grassley.  Watch as Grassley raises his hand while she reads him his oath of office as if he is taking the oath then and there.

“I solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States against all enemies foreign and domestic.” (45:00)

  • A constituent gets Grassley to admit that Trump is not above the law. Grassley tried  to avoid saying it, but the man was persisitant.  (23:30)

Constituent: “I’m going to repeat the question to you. Why do you feel that President Trump is above the law?”

Grassley: “He’s not above the law.”

What if the media were reporting this everywhere? What if all the cable news talking heads were talking about Trump loyalist Chuck Grassley acknowledging that Trump is not above the law?  Trump wants to be above the law and a MAGA Republican in a public town hall before a room full of constituents stood up to Trump (albeit not intending to) by declaring publicly Trump is not above the law. Maybe it’s just me but that is newsworthy.

  • Grassley voluntarily pointed out to the room of Iowans angry about the closing of the Dept. of Education, that he was the only member of congress still in congress now who voted AGAINST establishing the Department of Education in 1979. And he didn’t stop there. He went on to say that he would vote the same way today. (5:08)
  • Grassley’s answer to what he is doing to defend democracy.  (16:00)

Constituent: “What are you going to do and what are you doing to save democracy?”

Grassley turned away to point to another questioner and the crowd yelled, “answer the question.. then began chanting, “answer. answer. answer.” but Grassley moved onto another questioner and of course, did not answer the question.

If there are more town hall meetings, more of a coordinated effort would be good with Republians who are well rehearsed at avoiding questions.

If you watch this video in its entirety and come across something new that you haven’t previously seen in a highlight, please let us know in the comments.

Two Actions You Can Take To Help Elect Democrats Now

From our inbox an important message from Ken Martin, DNC chair –

This isn’t a fundraising email. Instead, I want to take a minute to share an update on what Democrats are doing, the DNC’s role in this fight, and how you can get involved right now.

Look, we’re all seeing what’s happening: Prices are going up, confidence in the economy is tanking, and fears of a Trump Recession are growing. At the same time, Donald Trump is letting unelected billionaire Elon Musk rip apart the country, fire our veterans, and threaten Social Security. And if that’s not enough, Republicans are voting to jeopardize health care access for millions of people and make it harder for families to put food on the table — all to fund Trump’s massive tax handout to billionaires.

Democrats are fighting back — taking legal action against Trump and Musk, traveling to Republican-held districts to hold town halls and meet with voters who are furious, countering Musk and his band of DOGE kids as they try to access personal data on millions of Americans, and investing to win critical bellwether races up-and-down the ballot that are happening this year.

But the truth is that we have a lot more work to do to rebuild trust with voters and show Americans that Democrats are on their side.

That starts with showing up in every community and making our case, listening to people like you, and organizing year-round to build relationships with voters and win elections. I believe Democrats can truly make an impact everywhere, in all 3,244 counties, and in red, blue, and purple states alike. That’s why I’ve already been traveling across the country to fight for upcoming elections, knock doors, and mobilize a new grassroots movement.

If we can do this together, we’ll lay the groundwork we need to win local and statewide elections this year, take back Congress in 2026, and ultimately, kick Republicans out of the White House in 2028.

That’s the DNC’s job, and that’s why my team and I are hard at work every day. I’m asking for you to stay involved, too — here are two ways you can make an impact right now:

Thank you for everything you’re doing, and I will have more updates to share soon.

On Tyranny Lesson 18: Be Calm When The Unthinkable Arrives

From the On Tyranny series by Timothy Snyder, Lesson #18 of twenty. Check here for a lesson every Monday or you can find them on YouTube.  They are all short videos, no ads.

“Modern tyranny is terror management. When a terrorist attack comes remember that authoritarians exploit such events in order to consolidate power. The sudden disaster that requries the end of checks and balances, the dissolution of opposition parties, the suspension of freedom of expression, the right to a fair trial, and so on, is the oldest trick in the Hitlerian book. Do not fall for it.”   [bolding BFIA]
