Those Who Will Work For Us

16 minutes – I lifted this video from JD Scholten’s weekly newsletter “You’re Probably Getting Screwed.”

Hope you felt a tremor this week. The once solid ground of old style Democrats were shaken by the upset victory in New York City by Democratic Socialist Zohran Momdani. Momdani is running on a platform to make it more affordable to live in his city, NYC. When you say that it almost seems like that should be a basic tenet, but those who run the country have made just living almost unaffordable as they cut taxes and cut deals for the wealthiest among us.

Momdani proposes to pay for his proposals by raising taxes on those wealthy. These are people who have been getting favors from the government right and left in recent decades. But in order to better the whole, some may have to pay more. Expect this to be loudly condemned from America’s mostly right wing media.

Momdani struck a nerve that has been more exposed than ever since January 20th. That nerve that every one of us non-billionaires have that is getting rubbed raw every time politicians bend over to do yet another favor for the wealthy. Once upon a time, We had political leaders who worked on leveling the playing field for  all. Now it is massively tilted.

As the chattering class goes on and on about the horrors of Momdani’s platform, regular Americans are thinking “affordable rent? Free busses? Affordable child care? Where do I sign up?”

As I was reading about Momdani’s come from nowhere win, I received the weekly newsletter from JD Scholten and Justin Stofferahn “You’re Probably Getting Screwed”   I have been getting this substack for a while, but this week in light of the Momdani win and the totally autocratic maneuvers of the Trump regime, the newsletter seemed to ring a loud bell.

While Trump is grabbing headlines, behind the scenes our economy continues to monopolize and consolidate. Our safeguards are destroyed and rules put in place to stop such things from happening are ignored and violated out of sight. Thank goodness someone is watching.

As our oligarchic media focuses our attention on the mad king’s newest power play, folks like Scholten and Stofferahn try to keep us informed. This week their focus was on consolidation in the food industry that will cause selection to fall and prices to rise:

Earlier this month, United Natural Foods Inc. (UNFI) was the victim of a cyberattack that took some of its systems offline. This has prevented the largest publicly traded grocery wholesaler from completing orders to the nearly 30,000 stores it supplies across the country. While cyberattacks are a common threat in today’s digital world, consolidation makes them much worse.

As Forbes contributor Emil Savegh put it, “A single breach had turned into a national supply chain shock.” UNFI is the largest supplier to Amazon-owned Whole Foods and the retailer has experienced some of the most severe shortages from the cyberattack. But Whole Foods is not alone as thousands of independent grocers, co-ops and regional chains like Cub (which is owned by UNFI) were also impacted. Even fifty-three military commissary stores reported ordering delays as a result of the cyberattack.

UNFI’s dominance, unsurprisingly, has been built through mergers and acquisitions. The most significant was in 2018 when as a response to Amazon’s purchase of Whole Foods, UNFI acquired Supervalu, a massive grocery wholesaler that owned several grocery chains including the aforementioned Cub and Shoppers Food and Pharmacy stores. UNFI had originally said it planned to divest itself of its retail holdings and did move quickly after acquiring Supervalu to sell or close some locations, but has mostly held onto that portfolio. Prior to the Supervalu purchase, UNFI had built its dominance in the natural and organic market by acquiring companies. According to an analysis by Claire Kelloway of the Open Markets Institute, between 2000 and 2018, UNFI acquired 19 distributors, manufacturers, and private label suppliers.

And they also focused on the doings of our public watchdogs that are supposed to be keeping an eye on businesses to stop monopolies and oligarchies. But as the video above shows we have a problem of “who watches the watchers?” in that area.

Scholten and Stofferahn take on Big Law, United Health Care and Medicare Advantage, Corporate Tax Breaks and the FTC where they explain how a massive merger between Mars and Kellanova (have you even heard of Kellanova?) just slides on through: (5 minutes)

Think of all this in the light of the MAGA congress trying to shove Trump’s Big Bad Bill through during a holiday week with a major distraction in Trump’s incredible screw up in the Middle East. Very possibly we wake up next week, on the anniversary of our nation’s founding, with a new King.

Urgent Action Requested: Save Iowa History

Sign the petition

The Issue

SAVE IOWA HISTORY!

RALLY to KEEP State Historical Society of Iowa’s research facility in Iowa City OPEN!

Restore Funding for the State Historical Society of Iowa Libraries and Archives. Keep physical records of Iowa history accessible to all.

OVERARCHING MESSAGE

This is not a partisan issue.  The preservation of Iowa history and public access to historical collections is a pressing matter for all Iowans, both current and future.  History is a crucial part of the civic life of the state.

THE IMMEDIATE THREAT (See below for ISSUES and CONCERNS)

Reorganization plans for the State Historical Society of Iowa (SHSI) endanger the preservation of Iowa history contained in publications, diaries, letters, photographs, maps, oral histories, films, and other materials housed at the Society’s two libraries in Des Moines and Iowa City. Drastic reductions in staff and collection management issues threaten public access to the state’s history.  Iowans risk being severed from their past.

PRESS RELEASE from State Historical Society of Iowa:

The State Historical Society of Iowa, today announced the difficult decision to close the Centennial Building Research Center in Iowa City, Iowa in July 2026, due to ongoing financial considerations. Effective July 9, 2025, the Centennial Building Research Center hours change to appointment-only. These hours last through December 31, 2025.

Established in 1956 upon agreement between The State Historical Society of Iowa and the University of Iowa, the Centennial Building has become duplicative in function to the State Historical Society’s mission, considering the recent renovation to the research center in Des Moines. Despite the Centennial Building’s notable long-term impact, sustained funding challenges have made continued operation unsustainable.

“The decision was not made lightly,” said Administrator Valerie Van Kooten, of the State Historical Society of Iowa.  “We take seriously the stewardship of Iowa’s history through its collections, artifacts and programs, and we are committed to providing the highest level of care for these items as well as the best possible experience for our patrons and the people of Iowa.”

Ongoing dialogue between partners and institutions across Iowa continue, as logistics and collection management considerations are weighed.

The collection size maintained with the Centennial Building stands at 34,700 cubic feet. Through a recent appropriation by the Iowa Legislature (HF 1039), a $5 million project was approved to revamp the archival storage shelving units of the State Historical Building in Des Moines. Upon completion of this initiative in 2028, the modernized storage solution will accommodate the added archival volume and provide streamlined and centralized public access to the collection.

On behalf of all Iowans and others interested in the history of the greater Midwest, the Save Iowa History Coalition makes the following requests of Iowa state officials:

1.     Guarantee accessibility to the physical records of Iowa’s history at the State Historical Society of Iowa libraries and archives, as well as the State Archives.  Maintain the operation of the Iowa City SHSI branch located in the Centennial Building, which manages the materials collected since the institution’s 1857 founding under the auspices of the University of Iowa.

2.     Provide funding sufficient to enable library staff to conserve, process, catalog, and manage the SHSI’s valuable collections and acquire new ones.  Ensure that the libraries remain open to the public during regular business hours at least five days per week.

3.     Make the budget and decision-making process for the DAS and SHSI more transparent and allow for public input into plans for the reorganization, dispersion, or digitization of the SHSI research collections.

4.     Official decisions should honor SHSI’s legal, ethical, and fiduciary responsibilities, while keeping in mind the historical and intrinsic value of the collections the people of Iowa established and invested in for 166 years. Protecting the integrity of the institution’s legacy and commitments made to past, present, and future generations of Iowans should remain at the forefront.

Thank you for signing the petition.  If you wish to make your voice more widely heard, write or call the Governor of Iowa, your Iowa state legislators, the Iowa Department of Administrative Services, and/or the State Historical Society of Iowa. Tell them to restore the cuts to staff and hours of the SHSI libraries that have longed served the state so well. Insist that the DAS abide by the Mission Statement of the State Historical Society of Iowa under Iowa Code.

ISSUES and CONCERNS:

1.     The State Historical Society of Iowa (SHSI) was placed under the Iowa Department of Administrative Services (DAS) when Governor Reynolds reorganized state government in 2022. Appropriations from the General Fund continue to decline, compromising the mission of the institution.

2.     Iowa’s governor decided to close the Iowa City Research Center as of June 30, 2025, without prior notice or public input from the Board of the State Historical Society of Iowa, the Iowa Historical Foundation, or other stakeholders including staff, researchers, donors, partner institutions, or State Historical Society, Inc.

3.     At risk is the preservation of and access to Iowa’s unique documentary record, particularly if the research collections housed in the archival facility located at 402 Iowa Avenue in Iowa City are re-located to Des Moines, possibly dispersed to partner institutions, or even deaccessioned.

4.     Four FTE professional staff in the Libraries and Archives were recently laid off, including two in Des Moines and two in Iowa City (who will remain until December 31, 2025). Insufficient staffing exists at both locations for the proper transfer of materials from Iowa City or to provide quality reference services.

5.     Aside from budgetary constraints, an even greater problem is the decades-long determination of the governor and SHSI leadership to starve research collections and reallocate staff and resources to activities unrelated to preserving a permanent documentary record of the state’s history.

6.     The publication of the SHSI academic journal, The Annals of Iowa, which began in 1866, was discontinued in June 2025. Valuable scholarly investigations into Iowa’s role in the nation and world will be curtailed, especially if access to primary source materials is diminished with poor collection management.

7.     There is a fundamental lack of historical and archival expertise at the senior decision-making levels in DAS and SHSI. Anthony Jahn, State Archivist, who oversees SHSI’s unique collections of documentary evidence, has no formal library or archival training.

8.     SHSI abandoned the shared online catalog system formed in partnership with the University of Iowa Libraries in favor of an inferior online catalog, with yearly contract maintenance costs. Not all collections are in the online catalog.

9.     Jahn moved forward on vacating the Iowa City facility prior to any announcements about closure and has actively engaged in dismantling programs long fostered by SHSI, privatized Iowa newspaper holdings, and suspended work with county records preservation.

10.    Replacing compact shelving in Des Moines by 2028 was a necessity, though intended primarily for existing archival holdings. SHSI’s facility in Des Moines lacks sufficient space and staffing to absorb and properly house materials currently housed in the Iowa City facility.

Travis Terrell: Progressive Means “Good For The Average Person”

Travis Terrell facebook.com/terrellforcongress/

Laura Belin at Bleeding Heartland has been interviewing Democratic candidates running for office in 2026.  You can find the interviews on the Bleeding Heartland YouTube channel along with a summary of the interview and transcript. They are a good way to get to know the candidates.

I would like to highlight Travis Terrell today who is running to oppose Mariannette Miller-Meeks for congress in IA-01.  So far Travis, Bob Krause and Christina Bohannan have announced campaigns and will meet in a primary.

Terrell is out there making the case for Democrats even though he doesn’t have much money, as he says in the interview. He is knocking on doors at night after work and traveling to the reddest parts of the district, reserving a space in a local library to meet with people and hear their concerns. He states that he is unafraid to talk to Republican voters.

“I want to go to places where I’m going to be challenged.. I want to face Republicans because right now one of the biggest gripes a lot of people in this district have is Marianette Miller-Meeks is nowhere to be found.. She’ll come to town for the photo ops but other than that she’s nowhere and she won’t talk to her constituents, she won’t listen to anything from anybody. I want to go to the reddest parts of the state and say you know, you’re not going to agree with me on social issues and I’m not going to lie and say you will but I am going to fight for you on your rights to like, a fair life and to be a worker that’s actually valued by your corporation instead of just walked on.  So in Sigourney I didn’t really get any push back.. Everybody there was great.. They loved hearing my ideas..They were very supportive.” – Travis Terrell

I have to respect someone who is willing to put the work in even though they may be considered a long shot candidate.  He is out there doing the work of Democracy, doing the work that the Democrats have been rightfully criticized for not doing in recent years, that is, showing up, talking to rural voters, small town voters, regardless of party.

If you would like to find out more about Travis Terrell, volunteer with his campaign or help him out with a donation, visit his website at terrellforcongress.com/.

Democrats’ The Daily Blueprint

Well, it may not be quite as much fun as Politics Girl who is indeed a national treasure, and it’s not widely known, but Democrats have a daily news program called The Daily Blueprint that’s not bad. It airs weekdays at 9 am CDT. It is available on YouTube.

Below is a video from last week as this post will be up before Monday’s Blueprint is streamed.  Also, Dave Bradley mentioned in Sunday’s post some good ideas that Dems might add to the program, including what’s going on in the states – governors, legislators, Attorneys General and the courts.

You can subscribe to The Daily Blueprint here and view past programs.

Get involved with the Democrats by texting ‘FIGHT’ to 43367 or going to https://www.democrats.org!

We are the Democratic Party, and we’re fighting for a brighter, more equal future.

Politics Girl Tells It Like It Is!

5 minutes:

It is a shame that the Democrats don’t have someone like Politics Girl delivering a message daily packed either the lies, incompetence and misdirection that the felon in the White House manages to inflict on us daily. Such a news cast could also include the doings in the state by governors, legislators, Attorneys General and partisan courts.

Since the right owns most of the media, distribution may be a problem. May I suggest a way to maybe work around that problem?

Perhaps Democrats could field a shadow cabinet like they do in parliamentary countries such as Britain and Canada. The members of such a cabinet would not have to be politicians themselves but some kind of expert on issues in say Health or Labor or Defense. They could be designated as a response team that would have a daily briefing to address the day’s take on MAGA movement.

Other countries are already doing it, so it would not be like we would be inventing the wheel. With a “official”. Feel as spokes. Group for the Democratic Party, I would think even the Fox wannabes would carry it to burnish their reputations as “non-partisan.”

Just thought I would throw this out. By the way – Politics Girl is yet another example of Democrats Speaking Out!

Sunday Funday: Welcome Back Christina! Edition

Very excited to hear of the candidacy of Christina Bohannan in Iowa’s first district once again. Also good that she is starting early because her opponent has made a lot of moves, told a lot of lies and made a lot of bad votes that have been hidden from the voters in her district. Just to pick on one thing: I bet the farmers in the district are surprised that international markets are drying up because of tariff shenanigans and the unreliability of our policies.

If you can, please help Christina get her message out early and strong. Expect her opponent to get lots of dark money this cycle. This race could decide if the House stays MAGA or falls to the good guys. https://bohannanforcongress.com  (1.5 minutes)

Just a reminder on Bohannan’s opponent running away from Alex Lawson of Social Security Works when he tries to ask her questions about her votes. (1 minute)

A Note On The Death Of Minnesota Speaker Melissa Hortman

The violent death of Minnesota Speaker of the House Melissa Hortman last week was a real shocker in Minnesota. It certainly reverberated in Iowa. The similarities of our cultures in the upper midwest has long been a source of friendly competitiveness and friendships across borders. A shocker like that feels like it happened to your next door neighbor. (5 minutes)

For many of us who frequent this blog it even hit closer to home. Politicians are our kind of people. They are our friends. We have worked for them, eaten with them and strategized with them. They are the people that we have shared our dreams of a better life with. They are the people that we knocked doors for, stuffed envelopes for and made phone calls for. We did so because we shared beliefs that we could make a good society together.

In the case of Melissa Hortman it was very easy to see her as the kind of person you could easily campaign for and probably develop a relationship with. My wife and I spent a portion of the weekend remembering the politicians who we befriended and who in turn befriended us.

So for us and I am sure many like us it was much more than the loss of a name in the news. It was a reminder that politicians are people, too. They have friends and family. But they stepped up and in some cases we went with them. It was the reminder also that certain elements are making our beloved country dangerous.

Slightly off topic, I think it is so callous that MAGA senator Mike Lee of Utah used the occasion of Melissa Hortman’s death to make fun of Democrats on social media. If MAGAs had an ounce of decorum they would kick Lee’s sorry butt out of the senate.

One more thing  the killer shot the family dog. For all of us animal lovers, that really hits close to home.

May the Hortmans rest in peace. Maybe in their memory the US will finally have had enough of the hate and the guns and the senseless violence.

Democrats Speak Out

Many pundits, especially in the right wing owned media, continue to claim that Democrats are not speaking out. I am here to tell you that Democrats are speaking out. Democrats are speaking out loudly, forcefully and truthfully about this clown show of a government that is in power in this country today.

The reason that we don’t hear about Democrats speaking out is that the media is owned almost completely by the far right in this country. From newspapers to radio, TV and social media such as X the right has a near monopoly on information in this country. They will not undercut their power by letting the opposition be heard.

But we will. And let me tell you that Democrats are fighting for our democracy with the ferocity needed. Exhibit A for today is Senator from Illinois Tammy Duckworth. This is a person that to me has the makings of a presidential candidate. Yes, she was born in Thailand, but her father was an American and as I understand it, that makes her eligible.

Here we see Duckworth taking on party man SoD Pete Hegseth on his miserable performance in his time as Secretary of Defense: (5+ minutes)

Senator Duckworth was followed by Senator Rosen of Nevada. Hegseth was also smirky to Senator Rosen. I won’t post that video but it is certainly worth looking up. Rosen lets Hegseth know who is boss.

Rosen was followed Senator Slotkin of Michigan. Hegseth was plain condescending to Senator Slotkin. The good senator did not let him get away with it. As she lambasted him at the end of her time. Sadly, a person has to dig deep to find these instances because they are for all practical purposes hidden by our media. (5+ minutes)

While we are at it and we are talking about Pete Hegseth, have you given any thought at all as to how badly a war in Iran would be run with a C-I-C like Trump and a clown of a Secretary of Defense like Hegseth? It just sets the mind to spinning. As noted in Duckworth’s questioning the Navy lost bombers in by just dropping them off the boat. We certainly do not look ready for anything serious right now.

Note also that both Trump and Hegseth are much more pre-occupied with their war on America’s blue cities than they are with something international. That is unless there is some money to be made or bribed by Trump.
