Thom Hartmann pretty well sums up the state of our elections in his daily newsletter Thursday:
Republicans can’t win elections on their track record of taking away healthcare, gutting the Social Security administration, and handing massive tax cuts to billionaires, so they send postcards into Black and Hispanic neighborhoods and college towns. The only thing that’s changed since Jim Crow, in other words, is the technology.
Let me add to that short list of bad policies – raising taxes through the imposition of tariffs, starting forever wars in far off lands with little planning or goals, using America’s policing powers against its own citizens and against specific states, and adding greatly to inflation and shortages through bad policy choices.
As we approach the midterm election in a couple of weeks, a person can’t help but be overwhelmed by the lousy candidates that the Republican party has placed before the electorate. Iowa has members running for congress who make less public appearances that the groundhog.
Congress member Miller-Meeks has spent most of her time in congress hiding from her constituents. Once more I will post her dash to avoid questions from Alex Lawson of Social Security Works. Those of us who bothered to send her an email know full well that the chances of getting a reply were scant. Here is a 45 second reminder of Miller-Meeks running away from responsibility. No wonder Republicans pulled their funding from her:
Here is Democratic candidate Christina Bohannan answering a question on the same subject = the Medicaid cuts that will be imposed on Iowa and the rest of the country just after this midterm. Remember Miller-Meeks and her republican cohorts (including Hison and Nunn) voted to cut Medicaid in order to give Musk and his billionaire buddies a TAX CUT!
Miller-Meeks is hardly the only stinker of a candidate for congress in Iowa. Joe Mitchell in the 2nd district has the distinct stench of corruption that rolls down from Trump in Washington into every county courthouse and state legislature. Here is Zachary Oren Smith of iowastartingline.com with a brief story on Joe Mitchell’s stretch of the truth:
Just a reminder that Joe Mitchell is running in the 2nd district because the current congress member from that district is taking her unique style of corruption (she’s made a ton of money in congress) and her ignoring of constituents to a senate bid. Here we see her ignoring a constituent with cancer: 1 minute
At all levels in Iowa Republicans are fielding candidates that reflect the current party’s philosophy of acting as oligarch’s, making the big score while they can and treating their constituents like scum. They have a great role model for such behavior in Trump.
Trump is a scofflaw who simply does what he pleases because he fears no consequences. Such an attitude rolls down to the districts, counties and precincts. Voting for any Republican this year is a vote for the stench of Trump corruption, Any Republican candidate is only a candidate because they have in some way pledged loyalty and fealty to Trump.
Next we will do a brief rundown on races for in state offices.
