Christina Bohannan is back in the race once again against Marionette Miller-Meeks. Bohannan will bring her background of achievement from a lowly background to the fight again. Unlike her opponent, Bohannan remembers where she came from and will use that as the guide for her policies that will focus on the common iowan.

The vote is fully a year and more off. In those intervening months we will see a Democratic Party that has reoriented the economy for the working class continue to surge. We will see the MAGA Party doin all they can to stop the surge that President Biden has created. The question will be if Biden and his Democratic leaders will get the credit they deserve for taking an economy on the brink of collapse and rebuilding it into the vibrant economy we have today.

We have an interesting dynamic in this country where Democrats build good economies based on broad participation and good wages. Then for some reason voters turn the economy over to Republicans who in turn work to kill that economy and drive inequality such that the rich get much richer and the poor lose jobs and benefits.

We have a good economy right now. Between the horrible covid response and the huge corruption of the previous administration, President Biden inherited a very shaky economy. It was almost exactly the same when President Obama took over from a president who for all practical purposes disappeared his last year. Son of a gun, That’s what happened when President Clinton took over in 1993.

Biden will need help to sustain this economy. He will need Democrats like Christina Bohannan to help move needed legislation that will help people.  

Meanwhile as we try to gaze into the future a little bit (my crystal ball never works really well) we see a MAGA Party that is coming apart at the seams. We see a party where at least half are now expressing some fealty to a man who is four time indicted, twice impeached and by many accounts the most corrupt politician ever in American history.

Half of the MAGA Party will support him and him only and the other half will never support him. So if you are an incumbent congress member which side do you choose? No matter which way you choose, you lose. From what it looks like Miller-Meeks is a Trumper. That begs the question of her judgment of people when she chooses the most corrupt politician ever.

It is sort of beginning to look like the MAGA Party will be openly infighting each other. If they turn Donald Trump out, he will not go quietly. If they don’t turn him out down ballot candidates will have to explain why their top of the ticket candidate is in court every day trying to explain away an attack on the seat of our government that appears to be driven by hid rhetoric.

On top of that down ballot candidates will have to try to convince the non-Trumpers to vote for them. As it looks from here Donald Trump, as the MAGA nominee or not, will be a huge albatross on every candidate for the MAGA Party. As I noted before, there will be daily reminders of what Trump did. A person just has to question the judgment anyone who ever supported Trump.

We can expect honest and heartfelt answers from Bohannan based on her life experiences and her empathy for the common Iowan. 

We can’t expect honest answers from Miller-Meeks. She voted against the Inflation Reduction Act but tried to take credit for some public works. Her answers on abortion are cloaked in the “yeah, but” dodge. In reality expect her vote to be to take away women’s reproductive rights. Same with guns. She will say one thing but will be a solid vote for extremist positions on guns.

In short, you can trust Bohannan. Based on her years in congress we simply can’t trust what Miller-Meeks says, nor can we depend on her to do what is best for Iowans or the country. But we do know MAGA money will be flowing into the First District big time. Go to Bohannan’s web site and click on the donation button to help out. 

Amie Rivers has a good report on Miller-Meeks’ first town hall in Iowa City last Monday on iowastartingline. Rivers unveils the ducking and dodging that Miller-Meeks did to avoid answering questions. What was really sad is to see that Miller-Meeks repeated the lie that Democrats allow abortions up till birth. It is a lie, I am sure she knows it is a lie. Lying to get votes is what MAGA candidates do including Miller-Meeks.
